The 2017 Mission Christmas Bureau campaign has begun, with a dedicated team of volunteers hard at work to help those who need it most.

Two of the longer serving volunteers are Merv Hildebrandt, who has been lending a hand for 13 years, and John McKay, 15 years.

The pair of seniors both say they got involved because they just wanted to help.

“After I retired in 2004, I needed something to do and I was interested in food hampers and the Christmas Bureau. I just like to help people,” said Hildebrandt.

While he spends more time at the food centre these days, Hildebrandt has always enjoyed the Christmas Bureau.

“I mostly work at the food centre now, helping people find what they need.

I’ve done it (the Christmas Bureau) for quite a few years, and my back won’t take it anymore.”

McKay, who volunteers at the bureau and the food centre, says more people are coming in for help.

“It seems to be getting busier. The need is more and more.”

McKay does a bit of everything at the Christmas Bureau. He takes in donations, helps pack up the hampers in time for Christmas and distributes them when people come to pick them up.

“I’m usually the only guy who can lift up the heavy ones. Nobody else can do it. I’m 62 years old and I’m lifting up weight,” McKay said.

“Sixty-two?” asked Hildebrandt.

“You’re still a spring chicken,” said the 72-year-old.

While the two enjoy joking with each other, they both agree the bureau does an important job, one they both support.

“I like helping out people who are in need of help. I hate seeing people who have two jobs and still can’t afford to pay their bills,” said McKay, adding that the cost of living, the cost of food and rent is absolutely crazy.

“I don’t like to see people being hungry, especially kids... I hate to see kids go without something under the tree.”

While neither man wants or expects anything in return for their help, they say there are many moments of gratification.

“I’ve seen people come into the Christmas Bureau and get their hampers

and they cry. They are so happy with what they got and they can’t say thank you enough,” McKay said.

Hildebrandt believes some people are embarrassed to come in, but most of them make the right choice.

McKay agrees.

“If you have kids, you have to put your pride aside and that’s what they do.”

Seeing how grateful people are is a better reward than money, or a pat on the back.

“It gives you a good feeling in your heart. You’ve helped somebody. Mission is one of the most generous communities in the Lower Mainland,” Hildebrandt said.

The Mission Christmas Bureau relies on volunteers to be successful, and Hildebrandt said more are welcome.

“We always need more volunteers, especially men. There are more women than men. So I challenge men to get off their butts and come in.”

“We do need more men,” McKay said.

“I’m tired of lifting all the weight.”

About the Christmas Bureau: Anyone needing help over the Christmas season can register for assistance. The store-front office is open for registration Monday to Friday, until Dec. 1, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Christmas Bureau temporary office is located at Unit #142 (next to The Source) in the Junction Mall.

Donations can be dropped off at the store front Monday to Saturday or at Mission Community Services at 33179 Second Ave.

Lunch with a Bunch serves up hot food and good times on the third Thursday of every month at Carrington House, and occasionally diners are joined by a guest speaker or live entertainment.

Meals on Wheels provides low-cost, hot, noon-time

meals delivered by volunteers every Monday, Wednesday and Friday except on stat holidays. On Fridays, frozen meals are also available on order. Each meal consists of soup and crackers, entrée, salad and dessert.

Seniors Connection is a one-stop information and referral service for seniors or anyone interested in the well-being of seniors. The centre operates on the premise that seniors need information in order to maintain their independence and live life to the fullest. Volunteers are available to the public Monday-Friday 9 a.m.–12 and 1–4 p.m. Information is provided on matters of health, pensions, income tax, housing, transportation, social activities, ext.

Referrals are given for trades people, seniors’ housing, legal services, podiatrists, and more.

Winter driving: 5 tire safety considerations Good tires that are adapted to winter conditions as well as your vehicle are essential to stay safe on the road throughout the cold season. Here are five points to consider when it comes time to tire up your car for the winter: 1. Even if there’s no snow in the forecast, it’s a good idea to install winter tires on your car once temperatures reach around 7 °C. Anything colder than that will have a hardening effect on the rubber of summer tires, thus reducing their traction. Winter tires, on the other hand, are designed to maintain optimal flexibility — even on days where the thermometer plummets to -40 °C. 2. Your tires should have a tread depth of at least 4.8 millimetres. If they don’t, or if they’re almost worn to the limit, replace them without delay.

3. It’s essential that all four tires on your car be identical and of the correct size.

They should also ideally show roughly the same level of wear. If they don’t, install the leastworn tires in the back to maximize your vehicle’s stability.

Concept links seniors’ experience with the creative ideas of youth NEW ACE125 PROGRAM SET TO LAUNCH IN MISSION Kevin Mills Mission Record

A new concept links the business experience and knowledge of Mission seniors with the creative ideas and enthusiasm of local youth.

The concept springs from the minds of Ken Selvaraja of Lanka Jewels in the Junction Shopping Centre and Bob Ingram of the Mission Seniors Centre Association.

They’ve worked with other Mission supporters to focus on approaches that would see Mission seniors mentor high school students and youth with great ideas but little business experience.

Organizers note that so often, young people have new and creative ideas, but lack the business skills to develop their concepts to be both marketable and sustainable. This concept would see seniors with experience in a variety of fields available to mentor young people, and help them grow their concepts into reality, with business success as the ultimate goal.

It will operate under the moniker ACE 125.

ACE stands for Ageless Community Entrepreneurs, which recognizes the cooperation between experienced seniors and younger entrepreneurs. The 125 recognizes that the idea was founded in Mission’s 125th anniversary year.

occurred over the past many months. An SFU professor has developed a proposal to use the experience with this program in Mission as a study vehicle for his concept entitled A Public Private Sector Partnership for Successful Aging and Intergenerational Connections in Mission, B.C. Planning has progressed to the point where a meeting of about a dozen participants from a variety of backgrounds in Mission’s business and education communities assessed the program in October and encouraged moving ahead.

Organizers are now planning the ‘ACE 125 Expo Showcase for April of 2018 which will invite local students to present their concepts for evaluation by a team of judges.

Four winners will be selected from all proposals, and move into test cases to ensure the program works as conceived. Mentors from various backgrounds will work with the successful students to help them develop their concepts further.

The program will be evaluated by university personnel to ensure it develops to the benefit of all involved.

Several participants have used the same phrase when describing the program – “This one has legs!”

Organizers hope that prediction comes true in 2018.
