Musical with a Message Life is a journey bookended by hope. Find My Way - a musical directed by Mary Boonstra and presented by Groove Force Productions - follows the lives of four characters as they navigate a tumultuous four months of loss and loneliness; with six show times (2:00, 5:00, and 8:00 p.m.) on November 26 and December 3 in the Phoenix Ballroom.

The theatrical experience is intended for the whole family and is suitable for audiences ages seven and up. While there is sadness, it’s not an overwhelmingly dark musical. “There’s a lot of joy in it, says Boonstra, who committed to bringing the script to the stage in the spring of 2017. Find My Way is her vision brought to life through the work of choreographed song and dance that seeks to both transport and mesmerize the audience. To bring the themes to life - which mixes humour with sadness - casting had to be rigorous. After several auditions, nearly 50 performers - many of whom are local talent - got the call-back in late summer and promptly began rehearsals. Five choreographers were chosen ahead of the audition process to bring the stories to life through movement. “I think the musical is a great way for families to open up a discussion about how they relate to one another [and] hopefully open up about some of the

difficulties and frustrations they face, she says. The show also supports three local charities, Starfish Pack Program, The Abbotsford Community Foundation, and the Salvation Army, through ticket sales, donations from the audience, and a portion of beverage sales. “We also have done an art call-out to some local schools to submit artwork to be showcased at the show, says Boonstra. “I thought it would be a nice opportunity to showcase some local youth artwork while students were involved in learning about the show and the messaging. So, while the play itself is important, there’s a lot going on around it that involves supporting the local community. Although there are feelings of loneliness throughout the performance that everyone can relate to, Find My Way ultimately delivers a message of hope.  “Life can be difficult [but] it’s how we navigate through it and what we take from it that makes it worthwhile. The stories are meant to resonate with us, and for us to realize that we can find the strength to carry on, she says. “The other lesson is that there are people going through things that you may know nothing about, so be kind to each other. Visit eventbrite.ca for tickets.

The Farmer and the Foodie We’ve all been there, wandering in front of the meat case, eyeing the beautifully marbled beef and various pork options but all too often walking away with the chicken breasts. Now I love chicken breasts, but life is just too short to cook only within our comfort zones so let’s add some variety today with pork loin. Public enemy number one of the pork loin, the leanest and most tender part of the animal, is over-cooking or using the wrong cooking method. Correctly cooked lean pork cuts will have a still-pink center. You may remember eating chewy pork chops as a kid, the public being instructed to (over)cook it to well-done. However, safer farming practices mean the danger of contracting trichinosis from eating under-cooked pork disappeared in the

1970s and today’s chefs instruct to cook pork loin to an internal temperature no higher than 150 degrees – most even going as low as 140 degrees. That’s excellent news for weeknight dinners, as the short cook times help put a meal on the table faster! Lepp Farms, located directly behind the market, raises all the pork you buy at Lepp Farm Market; the animals are fed an all-vegetable diet and also not given any routinely administered ministered antibiotics. A home’s windows can be a great place to start when winterizing a home. If the residents of a home feel cold when sitting near certain windows even though the windows are closed, the windows likely have drafts. Feel around the edges of the window and frame to determine if any cold air is

coming in. If so, seal the leaks immediately. Unsealed leaks can make air inside homes cold, prompting many to turn up the temperatures on their thermostats, which can lead to the unnecessary consumption of energy and contribute to high energy bills.

Air conditioners Homeowners who cool their homes with window air conditioning units may benefit by removing these units from windows before the arrival of winter. Window units left in windows may be allowing cold air into a home, leading to more energy consumption and higher energy bills. If removing the units is too difficult or impossible, purchase window unit covers that can be wrapped around the outside of the unit to prevent cold air from entering the home. Celsius will save energy and money while still providing plenty of warm water when residents need to bathe.

Water heater Heating water accounts for roughly 18 percent of the energy consumed in a typical home. Setting your water heater temperature at 48.9

Fireplace Homeowners who have

fireplaces in their homes should make sure dampers are closed whenever fires are not burning. Open dampers are akin to open windows, allowing plenty of cold air to enter a home.

Thanks to air conditioning systems, energy bills might spike in summer. But winter utility bills also can be costly, especially in homes that have not been winterized or audited to ensure energy is not being wasted. Winterizing a home involves taking steps to conserve resources and save a little money along the way.

Fire and flood restoration claims on the rise The ever-accelerating pace of modern life, population growth, new technology and customer-service expectations can challenge any business. For 32 years, Canstar Restoration’s fire and flood restoration business has been overcoming that hurdle, adapting and growing in Vancouver and surrounding areas.

Dargatz. “After an incident, we need to restore the quality of products and materials that are used in these homes. As restoration contractors, we have to be resourceful because we never know what we are going to come across. Many of the materials are imported, high-end and very expensive, including countertops, flooring and furnishings.”

“As the region grows, the volume of claims will rise at the same rate, but much of the increase is specifically connected to the development of strata units,” says Jay Dargatz, president of Canstar Restorations.

With new smart home systems, restoration experts are facing yet another set of rules. “It’s not just a home theatre anymore, the whole house is wired to accommodate smart technology,” Dargatz explains. “This is significant for restorers because we have to have specialists on staff who can deal with these products and complex installations.” Canstar’s staff members are always conscious of the timelines set by their clients to finish jobs. “These days, every industry needs to run lean with no room for redundant staff or resources,” he says. “We have to be prepared for significant events and be able to adapt with additional manpower. Because we are a part of the DKI network, we work closely with other members and offer reciprocal assistance when one of us is inundated

“The number of condominiums and townhouses being built has definitely had an effect on the local restoration industry. This is going to continue for the foreseeable future.” With multiple insurers, multiple owners and many people to report to, communication while on the job is vital, he says. One consideration in dealing with strata groups is the quality of highend residences. “Ten years ago people wouldn’t have been working on multimillion-dollar condominiums, but now that is almost a daily occurrence,” says

with work.” Having said that, he adds, “We usually achieve a quick turnaround, but when dealing with multiple owners and specialty products that can

Tips for coping with fewer hours of daylight

Frozen Shoulder Tennis Elbow • Knee Pain

MATTERS

Daylight savings time comes to an end each fall, at a time when the hours of available sunlight already are beginning to decline.

Dr. Chris Vallee works with the BC Lions!

When the darkness of fall and winter arrives, it can be difficult to maintain a positive outlook. Here are some proven coping mechanisms that can help many people to see the dark in a different light. • Be aware of SAD. Seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, is defined as a type of depression that’s related to changes in seasons, beginning and ending at about the same times each year. Symptoms tend to start in the fall and continue into the winter, sapping energy and making a person feel moody. As with other types of depression, SAD can get worse and lead to severe problems if left untreated. Light treatment, talk therapy and medication can help people who are susceptible to SAD.

• Make daylight hours count. Spend time outdoors while the sun is bright in the sky. Make an effort to switch your schedule if work interferes with getting outdoors, even if all that can be managed is an outdoor walk at lunch. Sit by a bright window and soak up rays whenever possible. • Celebrate winter activities. Go skiing, snowboarding, outdoor ice skating, or snowshoeing. Look forward to winter for what can be done, rather than what can’t. • Socialize more often. Instead of holing up indoors alone, frequent the places that become indoor gathering spots for locals. These can include coffee houses, breweries, restaurants, or even the local church. Plan more social occasions with friends and families so everyone can collectively shoo away the winter blues. • Exercise more. Use the darker hours as an excuse to exercise more, be it at the gym or outside. The Mayo Clinic says that exercise and other types of physical activity can relieve anxiety and depression, lifting an individual’s mood as a result. • Light a fire. Set the kindling ablaze in a fire pit, fireplace or wood burning stove, or just light a handful of candles. Flames can be soothing and less harsh on the eyes than artificial light. Fall and winter darkness does not have to send a person into the doldrums if he or she embraces the right attitude.
