Alberta bovine tuberculosis case update • Roughly 50 premises, including five in Saskatchewan, are currently under quarantine. This represents over 26,000 animals. As trace-ins from the original infected premises proceeds, we can expect this number to increase. However, at the same time, some quarantines may also be removed. This is expected and an important part of the investigation, and doesn’t mean the disease has spread. • Seven sites have been released from quarantine, these were sites containing low risk trace-out feedlot cattle. • To date there are still only six confirmed cases of bovine tuberculosis (including the original cow found in the U.S.), all originating from the same infected herd located on 18 premises. • On farm testing of the original quarantined herds was completed by year’s end, and testing on additional quarantined herds from trace-outs and trace-ins are proceeding. • A producer meeting was held in Brooks on January 4 for affected producers with an extended question and answer period with CFIA staff. • The risk of disease transmission is considered negligible for dogs, cats, horses, swine and poultry on infected premises without confirmed bovine tuberculosis cases. Given the negligible risks associated with each of these species, destruction will not normally be required. Owners of these types of animals on infected premises without confirmed bovine tuberculosis cases will be notified in writing about the release of these species from quarantine as evaluations are completed. Release prior to the removal of cattle and completion of the cleaning and disinfection process may be possible. • For infected premises with confirmed bovine tuberculosis cases, the CFIA will do further risk evaluations for dogs, cats, swine poultry and horses located on the premises, reviewing the animal husbandry practices associated with these species to determine the potential risk of exposure. • For premises that have not been declared infected but are simply under quarantine, animal species such as dogs, cats, horses, swine and poultry on those operations are not part of the investigation. More information can be found here:http://www.albertabeef.org/ uploads/riskevaluationotheranimals8931416pdf-623.pdf • The CFIA has identified options for supplemental testing of reactor animals in trace-out and fence line contact herds to alleviate the pressures associated with limited facility capacity for reactor destruction and post-mortem exams through supplemental testing of eligible reactors to screen out non-bovine tuberculosis reactors and provide an opportunity for producers to potentially retain higher value animals that can be screened out with supplemental testing. • Trace-out herds will continue to be tested by caudal fold skin test and ELISA blood tests. Animals that react to the ELISA test will be ordered destroyed (with compensation) for post-mortem exam and laboratory testing. Animals in trace-out herds that react only to the caudal fold skin test will be eligible for supplemental live animal testing to screen out false positive results. Producers will be given the option of having this supplemental testing done or not. • As of January 15, fence line contact herds will be tested with the caudal fold skin test only and reactors will be retested using the supplemental tests. For fence line contact herds that have already been tested with both the caudal fold skin test and ELISA blood test, the same supplemental options of caudal fold reactors that are available for trace-out herds will be available for fence line contact herds. More information can be found here:http://albertabeef.org/ uploads/supplementaltestingpdf-624.pdf • Depopulation of animals from the infected herds continues at a steady pace. • Non-reactor cows that have been humanely slaughtered have not had any visible lesions consistent with tuberculosis, as would be expected. Slaughter of reactor animals from the infected premises was completed in early January, to date, no further reactor animals have shown any visible lesions consistent with tuberculosis. However, culture results are still pending, and required to determine a true negative status. These culture results will have a significant impact on whether further tracing needs to be completed. Slaughter of reactor animals from fence line contact herds and trace-out herds continues at a steady pace. To date, over 900 elk have been removed from the Suffield base through the controlled hunts, and thus far, no signs of tuberculosis infection have been reported by hunters or found through the chronic wasting disease surveillance. Further information is available at www.albertabeef.org orhttp:// www.inspection.gc.ca/animals/terrestrial-animals/diseases/reportable/tuberculosis/investigation-se-alberta-and-sw-saskatchewan/ eng/1477438380160/1477438380659 Reprinted from Alberta Beef Producers Grass Routes Newsletter, January 13, 2017.

Proposed changes to transport regulations The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has proposed several changes to the existing Health of Animals Regulations Part XII that deals with the transportation of animals. The most significant change is the reduction in transport time before cattle must be fed, watered, and rested. This duration has decreased from 48 hours to 36 hours, and the rest period has increased from five hours to eight hours. There are also a number of wording changes throughout and record keeping requirements for within province transport, and are more stringent for consignees than those in the previous transportation regulations. These proposed changes are open for public comment, and while ABP and CCA will be providing detailed feedback on the proposed changes, we also encourage cow calf and feedlot producers, livestock
transporters, auction market and assembly yard owners, and any other concerned parties to provide their thoughts on the proposed changes. Transport is one of the most visible parts of our industry, and animal welfare concerns during transport is the number one topic written about to the federal Minister of Agriculture. There is no doubt that animal rights activists will be providing comments urging even stronger regulations to protect animals during transport, so we need to ensure our voices are heard and that regulations are science-based and practical while still providing excellent animal welfare outcomes. The proposed changes can be found here: http://gazette.gc.ca/rp-pr/ p1/2016/2016-12-03/html/reg2-eng.php The current regulations can be found here: http://laws-lois.justice. gc.ca/eng/regulations/c.r.c.,_c._296/page-16.html#h-70

Let’s talk truths on hormones and antibiotics Did you know that all Canadian beef is antibiotic free? Or that the difference in hormone levels in a serving of beef from cattle raised with hormone implants versus without is less than one nanogram (ng) – 1.9 ng versus 1.1 ng, respectively? A nanogram is one billionth of a gram. The amount of estrogen from one serving of cabbage is equal to the same amount of estrogen from over 1,000 servings of beef
produced using hormone implants. Compared to some other plant and protein sources, beef has the lowest amount of estrogen per 75 g serving (Canada’s Food Guide recommended serving size). Compare those amounts to the amount of estrogen produced by your body every day. An average adult female produces around 480,000 ng while an average adult male produces 136,000 ng, daily. Health Organization and the United Nations all conclude that the use of hormones is a practice that can be continued without harm to human health. The use of hormone implants means fewer environmental resources are used in beef production. In Canada, we use 24 percent less land than we did twenty years ago. If we were to return to 1950s technology, while maintaining current production

antibiotics to ensure no residue is left in the beef. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency regularly tests product for antibiotic residue, with the latest results showing over 99.9% of beef tested free from antibiotic residues. If residues are found, the beef is removed from the food supply. Antibiotics are used to ensure animal welfare. Providing care to sick cattle, including using antibiotics when appropriate, is the humane thing to do. It is often better for the animals to be treated with antibiotics through feed rather than being subjected to the stress that can be caused from repeated handling to give injections. Preventing infection can reduce the need to use more powerful antibiotics if a disease becomes more serious. For more information on hormones and antibiotics go to our website athttp://www. albertabeef.org/page/worried-about-hormones-in-cattle andhttp://www.albertabeef. org/page/worried-about-antibiotic-use-and-resistance-in-cattle. rates, we would need 11 percent more feed, four percent more water, seven percent more fuel, and produce 14 percent more greenhouse gases. The result of increasing efficiencies means fewer resources with smaller impacts on the environment – and your grocery bill. All Canadian beef is antibiotic free.
