Message from the Mayor On behalf of the City of Lacombe, I am pleased to present the 2017 Light Up the Night Guide.

This publication highlights the many fun, exciting family-friendly events and local shopping opportunities taking place over the course of this year’s Light Up the Night Festival, taking place from November 22-26.

Light Up the Night has grown to a fiveday extravaganza, and it captures all of the tradition, heritage and charm of an old-fashioned prairie Christmas festival.

It is a great way for our community to connect and kick off the holiday season together!

Be sure to take in popular events like the Tim Horton’s Santa Claus Parade on November 23, and afterwards you can stop by the popular “Selfie with Santa” station to have your photo taken with Old St. Nick in the Lacombe Memorial Centre.

The festive tree lighting ceremony, ice sculptures, and fireworks display are all back to help celebrate the season. Local businesses will have amazing shopping deals on offer as part of Moonlight Madness. And I hope everyone will check out Homegrown Theatre’s allnew production of the timeless tale, It’s a Wonderful Life.

Holly Jolly Geocache Geocaching is a treasure hunting game where you use GPS coordinates to hide and seek treasures with other participants in the activity. Whether you are an experienced geocacher or a relative newbie on the scene, the Holly Jolly Geocache is not to be missed!

Fireworks In keeping with recent tradition, the fireworks display will not be held until a few days before Christmas.

This allows families to celebrate with family and friends The lake should be fully frozen by then so people can skate and toboggan. We will have the fire pits on hand to keep everyone toasty, and the Tim Hortons will be onsite with their community truck

Brrrr ... It’s cold!

You just never know what the weather will be like on Parade Day. So dress in lots of layers. Fill a backpack with gloves, scarves, and hats. Santa takes his time and you can get cold waiting outside – so come prepared.

Best place to see the parade?

There isn’t a bad spot along the parade route, just busy ones.

Be sure to arrive early as spots can fill up fast.

Parking along the parade route

While there may be no parking right along the parade route, there are public parking lots nearby. Check out the festival map for a complete list of available public parking.

Nearest food locations

The Santa Claus Parade runs right past a number of super awesome restaurants! Be sure to check them out; they are a great way to warm before and/or after the parade.

Pre-parade entertainment

We want to keep you interested! This year there will be some impromptu fire dancing demonstrations along 50th Avenue prior to the parade.

Is he here yet?

Santa works on North Pole time. Waiting for the parade to start can be tough on the little ones. Come prepared with colouring books and toys. Feel free to visit the shops and stores downtown for a quick warm up! Check out the great Moonlight Madness Promotion on Pages 20 & 21.

I can’t wait to come to Lacombe again this year.

From what I’ve heard, I’ll get to fly down your brand new Main Street! It’s always nice to take a a bit of a break from the hustle and bustle of the workshop, don’t you know. Yesterday, Rudolph temporarily halted operations as he got his antlers tangled up in the tinsel dispensing machine. He had a full head of shiny hair before we got things cleared up. Blitzen was joking that he looked like Katy Perry.

Oh, the fun we have here at the Pole!

Anyway, enough about me. I can tell you the nice meter is literally off the charts for Lacombe this year! I have a feeling that all of you have been doing a great job looking out for your neighbours, listening to your teachers, and limiting your screen time… well maybe not the screen time – I understand that Netflix has some great programs. Mrs. Claus and I just finished
