A New Evolution at
TINHORN CREEK VINEYARDS - THE CREEK ROSLYNE BUCHANAN
Tinhorn Creek Vineyards shares a belief with actor and singer-songwriter Eddie Cantor, who said, “It takes 20 years to make an overnight success.” After farming and crafting wines from its estate vineyards on the Golden Mile and Black Sage Benches for over 20 years, Tinhorn Creek is confident the cumulative improvements made over a generation have coaxed out the very best from their vineyards. Accordingly, Tinhorn Creek is proud to announce the birth of its flagship wine – 2014 The Creek, released on September 1, 2017. The Creek honours the commitment to the land that the founding partner families made in 1993 when forming Tinhorn Creek Vineyards. This mission continues to guide everything the winery does, and The Creek fulfills this promise. It symbolizes Tinhorn Creek’s relentless pursuit of excellence; the winery carves its own path, much as “this waterway (Tinhorn Creek) shapes the landscape.” The Creek is estate grown and handcrafted, an elegant and luscious modern wine that exemplifies both place and time. Sandra Oldfield, CEO/president explains, “Tinhorn Creek Vineyards is never stagnant-we are always evolving. The Creek is the culmination of many good things coming together—passionate and innovative people, intense grapes, and a vision for the future.” The Creek 2014 certainly reflects its time; 2016 was a typically hot and dry South Okanagan summer followed by a cool fall. The long, cool autumn allowed viticulturalist Andrew Moon and winemaker Andrew Windsor to pick the five varieties of grapes over a six-week harvest period at perfect ripeness. The blend is 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, 17% Cabernet Franc from the Diamondback Vineyard on the Black Sage Bench, rounded off with Malbec and Petit Verdot from Tinhorn Creek Vineyard on the Golden Mile Bench. The wine was blended in spring 2016 and returned to barrel for a further 9 months for
a total 24 months in 40% new French and Hungarian oak barrels. The Creek was then bottle-aged for 9 months prior to release. 2017 also marks the first release of Tinhorn Creek’s micro-lot Innovation Series. The winery developed this series to create a sandbox for Moon and Windsor to play; it is a series of one-off, tiny production, experimental wines featuring innovation both in the vineyard and cellar. Foreshadowed by a secret rosé then-winemaker Sandra Oldfield made back in 2008, the Innovation Series’ started with two barrels of an experimental 2014 skin-fermented Kerner orange wine which then-new winemaker Windsor kept hidden in a corner for a year. Fast forward to 2015, the winery team tasted the wine and loved it! Bottled in the spring of 2016, the 2014 Kerner Orange Wine is the first release in Tinhorn’s Innovation Series, with a 2016 White Pinot Noir to be released in autumn 2017. Together Moon and Windsor are working to make an innovative wine or two each growing season with the goal of improving vineyard management and winemaking techniques. As micro-lot wines, the Innovation Series will be featured at Miradoro, the onsite restaurant, at winemaker dinners and seminars plus will be available at a few handpicked, top restaurants western Canada. Tinhorn Creek embraces a process of trying new things and learning through testing assumptions and standard techniques to maintain its high standards and improve its wine. Who knows, a wine developed in this program may result in a fabulous standalone wine or may be considered as a future selection in Tinhorn Creek’s core portfolio. For example, the rosé started out as a secret innovation and now is highly popular Oldfield Reserve wine.
The Tinhorn Creek portfolio now includes its flagship wine, The Creek, the Oldfield Reserve tier, Innovation Series, and Varietal Series. The new design introduced on Tinhorn Creek labels in 2017 will be fully released by early 2018. The refreshed look remains true to Tinhorn Creek’s legacy, reflecting the evolution and commitment to improvement that is at the core of this family-owned winery. Tinhorn Creek represents one generation of winemaking learning about the land, what works well here, and pushing boundaries in the vineyards and cellar. A culmination of that knowledge, The Creek is offered as an ultra-premium reserve.

Editor’s Note The dog days of summer are behind us and we are now heading into our beloved harvest season in the Okanagan. All hail Bacchus! This is the time of year when all of the hard work done on our vineyards and farms throughout the year come to fruition (literally). It is time to pick and preserve and at the wineries, it is crush time! Our wineries will be in full production mode all season getting their grapes crushed and putting the juice to bed in tank and barrel to await fermentation and transformation into wine. This year my family and I were proud to bottle our first vintage of Schell Wines with the help of our winemaker Rob Westbury. I now have first hand experience of the wine life, from vine to bottle, and it couldn’t be more exciting. There is great passion and excitement in this industry and it is thrilling to be a part of it. It really is a magic time to visit the Okanagan and there are so many autumn and harvest celebrations to enjoy. Get out there and eat, drink and make merry! Remember to eat and drink local and shop at your local farmers markets and fruit and vegetable stands. Cheers to another great vintage in wine country.

ADEGA ANNOUNCES LUKE WHITTALL
The 2017 season at Adega on 45th featured wonderful new experiences and culinary events. With one of the most spacious and wide-open views of any patio in the Okanagan, it is the perfect venue for outdoor special events featuring food and wine. “We’re excited about doing more new culinary events like this in the future,” says co-owner Pamala Farinha. Adega’s event season begins, as it did in 2017, with a Father’s Day celebration in June
featuring wonderful cuisine and live music on the patio in the afternoon. It’s a great way to celebrate dad and also provides a proper kick-off to the summer at the same time. And, it is a perfect time of year to join Adega’s wine club, the A-List, to stock up on wines for the summer! This past July, Adega hosted their first annual pig roast. Shortly after that, Adega teamed up with From Pillar to Post Culinary Creations for their Okanagan debut featuring hyper-local flavours from the 45th Street area surrounding the winery. Chef Dean Heselden and his wife Kaleigh (a sommelier) brought their Mediterranean-trained food and wine expertise to Adega--no doubt there will be more from this team in the future. Special events are not only for the summertime. Adega also takes part in the Winter in Wine Country celebration coordinated by the Oliver Osoyoos Winery Association. Follow Adega on social media to learn about these events well in advance to make your plans. Tickets are understandably limited and tend to sell out quickly.

CLOS DU SOLEIL: CELEBRATING THE PAST BY
Investing in theFuture LESLEY BUXTON
At Clos du Soleil Winery, they have a unique tasting room philosophy. Here it’s not just about tasting the wine, it’s about understanding its origins—the intricate journey from the vineyard to the bottle. This is a rare opportunity to learn first-hand from people deeply connected to what they create. It’s like learning from a much-loved musician the inspiration behind your favourite song. They work hard to give visitors an intimate experience, including free tastings of the majority of their portfolio of wines —even award-winning flagship wines like the 2013 vintage of Signature that was recently awarded a gold medal from the 2017 National Wine Awards of Canada, an honour which places the wine next to the most esteemed in the country. It’s also why occasions like Verticale, the winery’s vertical tasting event which focuses on the history of Clos du Soleil’s premier wines: Capella, Signature and Saturn, are important. This remarkable affair pairs
the winery’s flagship wines with a paired luncheon in the vineyard. A very exclusive event, the best chance for getting tickets is to join their wine club. Not yet a club member? There’s still a chance for you to attend: the winery is currently holding a contest for additional tickets for the public. Visit their social media sites for contest details and don’t miss out! Focusing on the future, the winery recently purchased a new vineyard which they’ve named “Les Collines” a French term meaning “the hills.” The name pays tribute to the winery’s French influence as well as the vineyard’s landscape. In accordance with the winery’s biodynamic practices the vineyard is already certified organic and has the perfect terroir for growing the Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon grapes they use to make their Estate Reserve White and Capella. In addition, the acreage will be maintained to preserve the land’s natural wildlife, ensuring its beauty for the future.

INTRODUCING: RUST WINE CO.
OldVines.NewWines. JENNIFER SCHELL
Perfectly positioned in one of the most prestigious wine appellations in Canada, RUST WINE Co. emerges from the southernmost property on the Golden Mile Bench. New ownership has engaged a dynamic duo of sommeliers to transform the property with a focus on excellent wines and fine Okanagan hospitality. Jesse Harnden, with an impressive history of injecting his energy and breathing life into new winery brands, and Kane Morgan, new to the Okanagan straight from Vancouver’s sommelier restaurant scene have, at an astonishing pace, created a unique new winery concept. And seriously, these two have basically done it all from design and development to actually creating rust! The name RUST itself is unique and was chosen to represent the union between old and new - a homage to the previous winery at the location, and a new face presenting some of the oldest vines in the valley. And who knew how beautiful rust could be? The labels feature closeup photos of real rust on various objects – and they are beautiful. Jesse came up with the idea after looking at the old rusty tractor on site and saw through the vibrant colours and drew a parallel with wine in the sense of catching a moment or “peak” of an aging process. The wines have been created in two tiers drawing from estate vineyards in Cawston,
Okanagan Falls, East Osoyoos, and the home site on the Golden Mile Bench. The entry level varietals are Pinot Noir, Merlot, Pinot Gris and a unique and lovely Zweigelt Rosé. The Premium tier will focus on some of the old vine blocks (some planted as early as the 1960’s and 1970’s) – an estate Zinfandel, Merlot, and Gewürztraminer, and an iconic Bordeaux blend comprised of the top barrels from each vineyard location. There is also a Syrah project in the works that will offer small lot wines from three different vineyards to demonstrate the diverse terroir. Look forward to enjoying these wines this fall on the sexy new patio with a killer view. There is a daily meat and cheese of the day to nibble on while sipping. Also extremely unique to this estate is an incredible, old silver mining bunkhouse. Originally built in Beaverdale in the 1800’s, the building was painstakingly carried over nearby Anarchist Mountain piece by piece in the back of a pick up in 1963 and rebuilt. The space is being updated to become a rental space and will definitely become an inimitable destination for travelers. PS Submit your own beautiful rust photo and have the chance to be featured on an up and coming label! Send your entries to the attention of Kane Morgan – kane@ rustwine.com

The Black Sage Bench is internationally celebrated for the distinctive wine cultivated here, wine that is distinguished by the unique terroir of the valley’s desert hills. However, there are few wineries in this renowned little town that capture the character of this region quite as well as the aptly named Desert Hills Winery. The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon, newly released for the Fall Wine Festival, is a fine example of this. Grown in a single vineyard on the estate, this particular harvest stood apart from others of its type with its display of delicate, well-integrated, strong notes of

cassis fruit. A distinctive wine unique to this distinctive terroir, it is available only at the Desert Hills Wine Shop. But of course the desert, much like wine, is ever changing. Once construction is complete Desert Hills will be launching a new bistro on site. Built alongside the estate’s Syrah vineyard, patrons can take shelter from the desert heat in the shaded patio area, look out over a vista of vineyards and watch the fall harvest and crush in style with a glass of a truly unique Cabernet Sauvignon.
2014 PetitVerdot
Distinguished by its royal purple colouring and a richly fruitful nose, this beloved red greets you with an aroma of violets and ripe fruit, and follows on the palate with prominent blackberry notes. The small lot selection of this varietal means that it will be mostly reserved for Desert Hills wine club members.
HIDDEN CHAPEL WINERY
DivineWine
JENNA HICKMAN
Tucked away in a pocket of lush greenery amongst the arid Oliver landscape, is Hidden Chapel Winery. The winery is named after the quaint white chapel nestled at the back of the property, amidst towering trees and moss carpeting the ground. Originally owned by an employee with the Summerland Research Centre, winery
partner Deborah Wilde was drawn to its’ charming gardens and purchased the property in 2005. Hidden Chapel Winery was up and running by 2011. Business partner and co-winemaker, Rudy Tomazic joined Hidden Chapel in 2014. “We’re a humble winery, we enjoy sharing our story and our wine,” says Rudy. All of Hidden Chapel’s wines are named with the chapel in mind, such as ‘Nuns on the Run’, ‘Shotgun Wedding’ or their ‘Blushing Bride’. The rosé - ‘Blushing Bride’ has been so popular that the duo decided to create a new recipe for a sparkling rosé, naming it ‘Made of Honour’. “Sparkling wine is getting very popular throughout the Okanagan and I’ve always wanted to make it,” said Deborah. “It’s the drink people want on a hot summer’s day.” Although Rudy wasn’t initially keen on the idea of doing the frizzanté, he admits Deborah was right and they are confident it will be sold out by the end of August. Hidden Chapel is one of the few remaining wineries that do not charge a tasting fee. Instead, they ask their guests to donate to the South Okanagan Women in Need Society. For the past two years, they have been the number one business donator for the campaign--Walk a Mile in Her Shoes. Additionally, a portion of their sales from their wine ‘Amazing Grace’ goes to cancer research. Deborah and Rudy have both had personal experiences with cancer. For Hidden Chapel, it’s all about creating a special experience along with quality wine.

AT OLIVER TWIST
LUKE WHITTALL
Nostalgia for the past is a theme that runs through many events at Oliver Twist Winery in Oliver. The annual “Show, Shine… and Wine?” event in July, that features classic cars, classic rock, pin-up girls, great food, and tons of fun was a great success in the hot summer sun. A fun new event is planned for this fall, the Crush Party, on September 30th. It will feature some down home cookin’ paired with Oliver Twist’s wines plus an “I Love Lucy” dress-up contest, and even a team grape stomp competition! The Nostalgia Series of wines feature classic pin-up-style labels and have names like Rockabilly Red and Boogie Woogie White, Pink Cadillac, and the newest wine, Cherry Baby, which is a Port-style fortified wine. Though Cherry Baby is a fun wine, it took some considerable winemaking skills from owner Gina Harfman to get this wine into the bottle. Made using both grapes and cherries, it was created through careful blending over many vintages using a solera system, a type of aging process used to make high-quality Sherries in Spain. The resulting wine is full of bright cherry, plums, rose petal, and vanilla flavours with a beautifully balanced lingering finish that makes a perfect end to a great meal. New to the Reserve Series is the 2013 Bordeaux Blend. It is a full throttle assembly of five grape varieties, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot that will age gracefully for a

The Splendour of Fall AT HESTER CREEK ESTATE WINERY
DEANNA RAINEY
TRUE WINE EXPERIENCE
Fall is the quintessential time to celebrate your senses at Hester Creek Estate Winery. Savour the taste of their extraordinary wines, look out over the Tuscan-style hills and vineyards of the Golden Mile and immerse yourself in the feeling of utter relaxation and true perfection. At Hester Creek, the portfolio of handcrafted wines portrays the unique terroir, winemaking style and personality of the winery. Winemaker Rob Summers says it best: “It is my goal to make wines that are approachable but not simple; that are enjoyed by many, and still appreciated by those with discerning palates.” Director of hospitality Roger Gillespie says there is a lot to celebrate this fall at Hester Creek. “We are releasing two great new reserve wines. Watch for the 2014 Reserve Cabernet Franc, with a hint of ripe raspberries, fresh dill and leafy fall undertones. Already aged for a year, the Cabernet Franc is very true to varietal. The 2015 Reserve Merlot features dark cherry, mulberry, vanilla and anise.” Both wines are $28.95. Fall also sees the arrival of their annual Garlic Festival on Saturday, September 30th. The festival is a celebration for all ages and its popularity continues to soar. Enjoy the live music, food trucks and spice companies. Visit the garlic vendors, browse through winerelated gifts and take in the case lot sales
of specific wines. There’s face painting and coloring contests for the kids, too. Proceeds from the Garlic Festival go directly to the Oliver Elementary School Farm to Table salad bar program. Along with Hester Creeks’ annual $11,000 contribution, the festival generates up to an additional $3,000. Hester Creek president Mark Sheridan recently attended a gala awards ceremony in Vancouver, where the Principal and Vice Principal’s Association of British Columbia recognized the winery for a Partnership Award – one of only five across the province - as a leader in community support. Hester Creek Estate Winery welcomed a fresh start when owner Curt Garland purchased the celebrated vineyard and recreated it into the gem it is today. And plans are already in motion for Hester Creek to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the vineyard itself, which was planted in 1968. At that time, pioneer Joe Busnardo was a true trailblazer, recognizing the potential for premium vinifera grapes to excel in the South Okanagan. He began planting…Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Pinot Blanc and Hester Creek’s now-famous Trebbiano. His dreams became a reality and in 2018, the 50-year anniversary will be heralded with a celebratory anniversary wine which promises all of the richness of the history it represents. Look for unique anniversary events throughout the year as well.

(L-R:) BROTHERS WALTER & GORDON GEHRINGER
LUKE WHITTALL
The Desert Sun
AT GEHRINGER BROTHERS ESTATE WINERY LUKE WHITTALL
Sitting majestically on the Golden Mile Bench in Oliver, Gehringer Brothers Estate Winery and vineyards were built with a dream and vision for the future. One of the industry’s oldest wineries, the success of this family operation has always been quality and consistency. For consistency from vintage to vintage, the Gehringer Brothers’ white blend called Desert Sun is one of Walter’s most truly crafted products and shows his real talent at blending. Beginning production in the early 1990’s, Desert Sun has attracted a loyal following that seeks that same consistency each year. “We actually start blending this first, as soon as all of the whites are finished,” says Walter. He then has the full spectrum of ‘colours’ from each of the grape varieties at his disposal to craft each
vintage of Desert Sun every year. The 2016 is off-dry and bursting with the flavours and aromas of passion fruit, pears, star fruit, and dried mangos. It finishes long and is cleanly refreshing, making it one of the summer’s most ideal white wines. Released late in the summer, the 2016 Merlot is rich, featuring the flavours of plums, blackberries, black cherries and cocoa, with vanilla notes. It offers extremely smooth, ripe tannins, a gentle mouthfeel, and a very long and pleasant finish. “2016 as a year was really good,” says Walter. The longer than normal length of the growing season that year easily allowed the grapes to reach full maturity. Even still, the balance between sugars and acids was secondary to the taste of the fruit. “I’m looking for the taste of the grapes, above all,” explains Walter. “More so for Merlot than other varieties.”

Opens NewWine Shop! STAG’S HOLLOW LUKE WHITTALL
For wineries around the world, a beautiful wine shop with a great view is an essential part of the visitor experience. Stag’s Hollow’s new wine shop will offer a new level of experience for their guests. It has a wraparound deck that offers sweeping views of their unique, steeply sloped vineyard. The view is totally unobstructed and quiet with no roadways visible. There will be traditional tastings at a large granite tasting bar and plans for guided sit-down tastings featuring library and reserve wines. Most importantly for winemaker Dwight Sick, the experience will really connect visitors to the unique vineyard and winery elements that make Stag’s Hollow so special. September will bring about the release of a new Renaissance Series wine. “This is the first vintage where we have had four Renaissance wines on cue,” says Dwight. Along with the Renaissance Syrah, Merlot, and Pinot Noir, Dwight is re-introducing a wine that has not been a part of the portfolio in a decade.

MEYER ELAINE DAVIDSON
The #2 Small Winery in Canada, three golds, six silvers and three bronzes in the National Wine Awards (winealign.com) are an impressive confirmation of Meyer Family Vineyard’s approach to making wine. “The awards are a tribute to the skills of our winemaker Chris Carson and to our focus on varietals,” says JAK Meyer. “We have determined what grows best in our vineyards and we focus on small case lots of varietals best suited and expressive of their unique place of origin. Our success at these awards speaks to our approach. Each wine reflects
the single vineyard of its origin, the soil, the climate, the slope.” Meyer Family Vineyards wines are produced on two main vineyards, the 1.62 hectare Old Main Road vineyard on the Naramata Bench and the 6.9 hectare McLean Creek Road vineyard in Okanagan Falls. The gold winners are Meyer 2015 Tribute Series Chardonnay (Old Main Road Vineyard), 2015 Old Block Pinot Noir (McLean Creek Vineyard) and 2015 Micro Cuvée Pinot Noir (McLean Creek Vineyard). Meyer is a consistent winner at these awards that had more than 1,700 entries from 240 wineries this year. Meyer has placed in the top 20 in Canada in three of the last five years of the National Wine Awards.
Internationally, London-based Marks & Spencer carries only one Canadian wine, Meyer, and has re-ordered for a third vintage. A Norwegian distributor is now on board as well and a quick sell-out and excellent response has also lead to a re-order. The OK Fall’s winery’s clients seem to agree with the judges’ and international wine lovers’ palates. Many of Meyer’s wines are sold out. The answer is the Meyer Wine Club, which gives participants access to small production wines, new releases and wines only allocated for sale through the club. The last 50 cases of all the wines produced at Meyer are reserved for club members. The wine club’s popularity has lead to a cap of some of the packages and waitlists.
Those lucky enough to pay Meyer Family Vineyards a visit will enjoy the tasting room, patio, expansive lawns and sheltered garden overlooking the vines and can extend their visit by enjoying a lovely lunch of charcuterie, cheeses and other light fare where wine, cider and beer is available by the glass. For those looking for a more in-depth and intimate tasting, a private VIP tasting will offer more of the Meyer Family Vineyards story. Guests will sample the estate’s premium and library wines. Book ahead by email at wineshop@MFVwines.com or by phoning 250-497-8553.

gold for the 2016 Gewürztraminer and 90 points and Best in Class for Autumn Gold 2016 with 94 points. What better way to bid adieu to summer and welcome the cool crisp days of fall than by enjoying a glass of Autumn Gold 2016. One of Canada’s most popular white blends, Autumn Gold is equal parts Riesling, Gewürztraminer and Pinot Blanc. This is a clean, crisp, white wine that carries aromas of orchard fruit, spiced apple and citrus. The soft and round palate will taste spice, candied ginger and a hint of rose balanced with crisp acidity. The amazing fruit makes it
the perfect wine to have on the patio with lots of family and friends, or at traditional festive gatherings where you are roasting a big bird. Wild Goose has aptly branded it, “Our secret blend of deliciousness.” Autumn Gold pairs perfectly with Red Seal chef David Simenoff’s fall-off-the-bone ribs slathered with a generous amount of his secret recipe sauce at the winery’s Smoke & Oak Bistro. The menu is inspired by the smoky flavours of the Southern US, enlivened with fresh local ingredients. Chef David makes everything from scratch including his own corn bread, slaw and baked beans. days are meant for lingering and the patio views are stunning in the golden light as the vineyards leaves turn and the grapes near their peak just before harvest. The winery’s 2017 Vineyard Stage Concert Series closes out the season on September 30th with the 4th Annual Beale Street Festival, a tribute to the annual Memphis Blues Festival. Tickets include seating, a Smoke & Oak Bistro buffet meal along with a glass of wine. Check the website at www. wildgoosewinery.com for fall hours. Winter sales can be arranged by appointment.

Legends of the Okanagan ON THE COVER
Chef Rod Butters Food
Rod Butters is the original farm to table chef. His entire career has been a constant celebration of our farmers and artisans through his cuisine. With three restaurants on the go: Raudz Regional Table, micro bar bites and Terrafina at Hester Creek by RauDZ, he and partner Audrey Surrao have maintained the highest standard of food and operations since their first restaurant Fresco launched many years ago. Case in point, there are photos of his prized suppliers that line the walls of his restaurantsbutchers, bakers, winemakers, fishmongers –are all on display with their names included in the menu descriptions. Butters has just released his long awaited cookbook, an embodiment of his philosophies through his recipes, all created to be simple enough for the home cook to create: An Okanagan Table: The Art of Everyday Home Cooking.
Howard Soon
Jon Alcock
Master winemaker Howard Soon at Sandhill Wines is retiring this year after an epic 37 vintages. Howard is a beloved member of the wine community and is renowned for his teaching, mentoring and boundless support of new winemakers and wineries. A walking encyclopedia of local wine history, he in fact being a main character in our wine history, has played an historic leadership role throughout the politics and growing pains the industry has endured over the years. Also a pioneer of concepts, it was 20 years ago when Howard founded the idea to feature terroir through a series of small production single-vineyard wines at Sandhill Wines. This revolutionary idea is just now becoming a theme in our local wine industry.
Sunshine Farms is the Alcock family legacy. Pure organic farming, featuring heritage varieties and heirloom seed sales, Jon and wife Sher Alcock have built their lives around stewarding and celebrating our good earth. And their produce reflects that dedication and nourishment. With countless varieties of heirloom tomatoes, every colour of potato, rainbow carrots and much much more, the bounty harvested from their farm is a chef’s dream. No surprise that Butters and Alcock have been working together as a farm to table team for many years. Jon has stepped back from most daily operations on his farm and passed these responsibilities onto his children Russ and Mona who will continue tending the land as he taught them. We are hoping that this will give Jon the time to pick up a pen and write a book to share his amazing knowledge of seeds and growing organically.

CRESCENT HILL WINERY A winery born on a double dare and driven by the passion and unstoppable strength of owner Teresa Murray Wiseman, Crescent Hill Winery officially arrived onto the wine scene four years ago, a mere 36 years after its vines were planted. Teresa is a force. Daughter of the award winning wine’s namesake, Glennallyn Murray, she has fought tooth and nail for these three acres of old vines on the hills of Penticton, and her tenacity has paid off. There are many women involved in the Okanagan wine industry now, but not when Teresa took the reigns. She says it was “A real fight to stand up as woman in this industry and a struggle to be taken seriously.” Against all odds, the vineyard remains in her hands, and it is thriving, with a new tasting room on the property and a big win medal proudly hanging on the neck for the 2016 Best White Wine in Canada from the All-Canadian Wine Awards. This winning
History In A Bottle
Gewürztraminer comes from their tiny estate vineyard where the vines are old and rich. “This old vine Gewürztraminer boasts over fifteen foot roots and pulls all the water and nutrients from the dirt that most other Gewürztraminer’s cannot, this is why we believe this wine has unmatchable flavour.” Glennallyn Murray is an unknown pioneer in our wine industry. This vineyard was one of the very first vineyards planted in Penticton area in the 1970’s. The vines are 100% pure German rootstock that he brought over from Europe in his suitcase. These prized three acres include Gewürztraminer, Pearl of Csaba (a rare Hungarian Orange Muscat), Verdelet, Riesling, Chardonnay and Muscat and together produce 1000 cases. Murray replicated the vineyard style that he saw in Europe, since there were basically no vines growing in the Penticton area--there was no precedent for planting! These vines are survivors just like their owner. Teresa says, “Our vines have been
JENNIFER SCHELL
in the ground 25 years longer than any other grower in this region!” As soon as it began producing, this tiny vineyard was selling its grapes to many local iconic wineries. Each seemed to win awards using these precious vines, so the family decided it was high time to make their own wine. On his deathbed Glennallyn, who did not have time to fulfill his dream of building a winery said to his daughter, “Let’s see what you can do.” This, says Teresa, was “a direct double dog dare” and she was in. So the winery project began in 1999, with the first vintage created by her husband Russell Wiseman (former Montana cowboy turned winemaker and vineyard manager) in 2010. With history playing a role in each vintage, the wine is made using the original old equipment purchased by Glennallyn, (their pride and joy is Cristal, the ancient filter that is still going strong). The winery is currently producing eight different wines. Dad would be proud.

ELAINE DAVIDSON
With 15 beautiful wines to choose from, visitors are spoiled for choice at Moraine Estate Winery. “We have wines for those that like a bit of sweetness with our icewine and late harvest wines,” says proprietor Oleg Aristarkhov. “There are lots of choices too for those who want something drier such as our award-winning Viognier and Chardonnay. Try our 2015 Pinot Noir or 2016
Riesling if you want a real treat as both won gold medals at the All Canadian Wine Championship. If you are a fan of reds, our 2014 Meritage recently won a gold medal at the Okanagan Life Magazine Best of BC awards. Our house wines, Cliffhanger White 2016 and Cliffhanger Red 2015 are also strong sellers because of their quality and great value.”
The winery is known for its elegant, balanced and distinctly varietal vineyard focused wines that please the palate. The secret is also out that these amazing wines are among the most reasonably priced on the Naramata Bench. Moraine is named for the splendid glacial terrain and white clay bluffs that create the iconic image of the Naramata Bench. Relax on the patio and enjoy outstanding wines and sweeping lake views while snacking on a great selection of locally sourced meat and cheeses.
No wine snobbery or pretensions are found at this family-owned and operated winery. Staff is friendly, the atmosphere is casual and the winemaker Jacq Kemp is often in the wine shop and loves to interact with guests. Many of Moraine’s wines, such as their Viognier, Gewürztraminer, Malbec and their library wines are available only at the wine shop. Winemaker Jacq will take you on an interactive tour of the vineyard followed by Moraine’s fall release wine tasting September 30 during the Fall Okanagan Wine Festival.

Autumn THERAPY ANDREA DAWN THOMAS
With the seasons shifting and the leaves changing colour, we tend to also switch our wine preferences (as well as our clothing preferences) as the air gets cooler and the days get shorter. Therapy Vineyards has all of your wine needs covered as we enter into fall. Steve Latchford, who has been the winemaker at Therapy for nine years, has some exciting wines in store for you! If you haven’t tried Therapy Vineyards fortified wine yet, you simply must. The wine is cleverly named “Freudified” and is a non-vintage Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon blend fortified with Chardonnay spirits. It started as a one-time production but because of its popularity, they decided
to continue production. It is a Port-Style wine with a ripe nose of jam, cassis and black licorice. Flavours of leather and dark fruit finish with a balanced acidity, and notes of tobacco and spice. Try this wine with a rich, dark chocolate dessert or with blue cheese for those with a savoury tooth. You will be surprised to hear, that because of the acidity, this wine also pairs very well with Key Lime Pie. Therapy Vineyards is also working on expanding the sparkling wine selection to include a Blanc De Noir, a Blanc De Blanc and a Brut! Because every season is a good season for bubbles right? Currently on offer are the 2016 pink Fizzio Therapy Rosé and the 2015 Fizzio Therapy Blanc- both priced at the very therapeutic price of $19.99.

Pinot Noir
Freud’s Ego
A beautifully balanced wine featuring a light cherry colour, this Pinot delivers a nose of vanilla, cloves and red currants that follows onto the palate with toasty oak and red fruit. The finish is smooth and toasty making it a perfect pairing for fall. The fruit for this wine is sourced from Vernon and Naramata and is aged in French and American Oak. Food match this beauty with turkey dinner or a salty tapenade.
Deep raspberry in colour, this wine is matched with black currants, white pepper and leather on the nose. Followed up by toasty oak and dark chocolate aromas, the palate has great focus towards the soft tannins and toasty complexity. The finish is smooth and textured with lots of red fruit that leads to a wine that can be drunk now, or aged for a couple more years. Blend: 63% Merlot, 28% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc

Legend has it that British Columbians did prohibition better than anyone else. No, you couldn’t buy alcohol, but your doctor could prescribe it for you. Now, Legend’s owners Doug and Dawn Lennie are no doctors - though their distillery is a former Doctor’s office – there is no doubt that their gin would have been scrawled across prescription pads throughout the Okanagan. (Refill – as needed.) Handcrafted in Naramata from grain to glass using BC’s finest wheat, Doctor’s Orders is currently their best seller. To compare it to their smoked rosemary infused Black Moon Gin, try a gin flight featuring three mini gin and tonics served in cute mason jars and decked out in fresh fruits, berries and produce according to what’s fresh and in-season. The ManyVirtues of the Rooster
This is a very exciting year for Red Rooster Winery! Not only is it the winery’s 20 year anniversary, it is also the Year of the Rooster. Even more reason to celebrate. Roosters were very important in ancient China and are still a mascot today. Roosters are thought to have five virtues: politeness, military bravery, courage, benevolence and reliability and are a symbol for all of these. While in ancient times, people didn’t have watches or clocks so they used the 12 Earthly Branches to divide a day into 12 2-hour periods. Each period was named after a different Earthly Branch. For convenience sake, people replaced them with the 12 zodiac signs, according to their sequence, creating sayings to relate each period to each animal or symbol’s behaviour. Rooster hours were from 5pm to 7pm, when the roosters would go back to their coops. Lucky for the lovely team at Red Rooster Winery, we have seen some advancements in time tracking. Imagine trying to schedule your day on making dinner at rooster hours? I’ll stick to my smart phone! 2017 is a Fire Rooster Year, which, in Chinese astrology, each zodiac year is not only associated with an animal sign but also one of five elements; Gold (Metal),
Wood, Water, Fire and Earth. This is, perhaps what inspired Red Rooster to re-brand with beautiful varied artwork on each of it’s wines. If you have not already seen the new labels, I would suggest a trip to your local wine shop or liquor store to pick up a bottle or two (or case!) of Red Rooster wines. The winemaker at Red Rooster, Karen Gillis, takes her craft very seriously and puts passion into all the wines she creates. Karen is extremely approachable and while she dreamed of being a chef as a child, she found her calling in winemaking. She isn’t afraid to be completely hands on and her goal is to become the benchmark for wine quality in the Okanagan. Besides all of the delicious wines available to taste, the winery visits provide an entertaining learning experience. The people at Red Rooster Winery share their knowledge with passion and enthusiasm to all the guests that walk through their tasting room door. With regularly scheduled tasting workshops and one hour private tastings available that are both fun and educational, their team will make sure you continue on your wine tour with the tools and information to become a pro taster! The tasting room is open from 10am to 6pm everyday until October 8th. From October 9th forward the hours will be 11am to 5pm.

Bird Series Rosé
A delicious blend of mostly Pinot Blanc and Malbec. This wine is a limited production of only 505 cases so pick it up while you can! The Rare Bird Series Rosé has notes of strawberry, watermelon, Bartlett pears and Rainier cherries that follow onto the palate with refreshing acidity that linger on this off-dry wine. This wine would pair beautifully with tapas, gourmet pizzas, feta cheese, Greek salad, crab cakes, poached salmon, spiced shrimp, pork tenderloin with rhubarb sauce, Tourtiere, charcuterie, tangy chili sauce and many others. This wine makes for a very versatile pairing with a wide variety of cuisine.
2015
Red Rooster Merlot.
Karen uses 100% Merlot grapes from both the South Okanagan and Similkameen Valley. This allows her to blend complementing characters of each region and vineyard. The wine was aged in 90% old American oak and 10% French oak for 14 months before bottling. The variety of oak gives the wine beautiful structure. With a nose of rich, blue plums, black cherry, warm Chai spice and soft oak that carry onto the palate, this dry, medium to full-bodied Merlot has silky tannins and fruit flavours of black cherry and dark plum with just a touch of chocolate. This Merlot is excellent when served with grilled steak and sautéed mushrooms, lamb chops, duck breast in a red wine reduction, pheasant, beef tenderloin, prime rib, beef wraps, bean stews, and old cheddar. A cozy, rich, delicious wine for those crisp fall nights.

NAR A M ATA LET’S BREAK SOME RULES AT HILLSIDE
Wear white after
Labour Day ELAINE DAVIDSON
Hillside Winery is leading the way in the Okanagan wine industry by making it’s own set of rules. Winemaker Kathy Malone’s commitment to using only 100% Naramata Bench grapes in Hillside’s wine is stirring things up while making lovely complex wines that showcase the terroir. Some would expect a straightforward portfolio when sourcing fruit only from a relatively small region, but to Kathy’s mind, that makes for an exciting challenge and leads to some great things like a new and exciting Port-style white. This is Hillside’s (and quite possibly the Okanagan’s) first, fortified white wine in the style of white Port. "A tiny yield from a new planting of Muscat Ottonel produced beautiful aromas and flavours that cried out to be preserved,” says Kathy. She made a single barrel of Soirée
en Blanc (32 cases) bottled this summer and due for release in mid-September. Like traditional Port, this fortified (18.5% alcohol) white wine was produced from Muscat Ottonel grapes grown on the Naramata Bench. The wine produced is fortified by the addition of a barrel-aged spirit distilled from Hillside wine. The addition of the spirit stops the fermentation process, leaving residual sugar in the wine, while boosting the alcohol content. The wine was then stored and aged, in older French barrels before being bottled. Wine club members get first dibs on this limited production white Port that will be unveiled at the end of summer Soirée en Blanc Release Party. Guests are invited to thumb their nose at convention, don their whites and sip. Check out the event page at www.hillsidewinery.ca for details and tickets for the party. If you’re lucky enough to get your hands on a bottle, you’ll find Hillside Soirée en Blanc to be a fun and flexible wine. Drink it on its own - served chilled it makes for a great aperitif or dessert wine.

BACON-WRAPPED PLUMS WINEMAKER KATHY AT THE SORTER WITH SOME MUSCAT GRAPES… WHICH IS THE VARIETAL THAT MAKES THE SOIRÉE EN BLANC
This is our version of angels on horseback (a savoury canapé of bacon-wrapped oysters), but in my opinion, tastier. I buy the plums from farmers who have heirloom plum trees. If you can't find fresh plums, use dried prune plums, and rehydrate them a little bit. We serve this in the restaurant on our fall/winter menu.
INGREDIENTS
16 fresh or dried Italian prune plums, pitted 8 slices bacon, halved lengthwise
BLUE CHEESE MOUSSE 1/4 cup + 1/2 cup whipping (35%) cream (divided) 1 tsp gelatin powder 1/4 cup blue cheese
PORT WINE SYRUP
Recipe from An Okanagan Ta ble: The Art of Every day Home Cooking pub lished by Figure 1 Pub lishing
1/4 cup port wine 2 Tbsp honey 2 whole cloves 6 black peppercorns
MAKES 16 FIRST If using fresh plums, preheat oven to 275°F and dry them for about 1 hour on a baking sheet. If using dried plums, put them in a small bowl, cover with water, and set aside for 10 to 15 minutes, until reconstituted. BLUE CHEESE MOUSSE In a small saucepan, combine 1/4 cup whipping cream and the gelatin and set aside for 5 minutes to bloom. Add the blue cheese and cook on low heat, until the cheese has melted. Strain in to a small bowl and refrigerate for 15 to 20 minutes, until just cooled. (The mixture must remain liquidy and not fully set.) PORT WINE SYRUP Combine the ingredients in a small pot over medium heat and cook for 5 to 7 minutes, until syrupy. Set aside to cool, then chill.

LUNESSENCE:
SU M M ER L AN D Wine is big business, but as we know, most big businesses become faceless brands, and the passion for the craft and quality of the product can be lost when the focus turns from the product to increasing sales volume. And this is why boutique wineries are the most fun to explore and often yield the best wines and most interesting stories. Lunessence boutique winery and vineyard is one such gem of winery. Visitors

are warmly welcomed and can relax on the spacious patio, listening to classical music and tasting an array of inspiring wines. Is there a better way to spend a sunny afternoon in the Okanagan? Lunessence opened its doors in 2014, and in just three short years, it has gained a reputation for producing superior quality, small lot wines. In fact, Lunessence has earned 26 Canadian and International awards to date, including three awards
Quality over Quantity from the prestigious Decanter World Wine Awards. General manager and winemaker Michal Mosny and wife and viticulturist, Martina run Lunessence with a philosophy that respects the vineyard as a living and varied ecosystem, and the belief that the health of the vineyard directly affects the quality of the wine. The property is uniquely situated between two wetlands; a much-needed habitat for
native species in the dry Okanagan. And luckily for the local flora and fauna, the goal at Lunessence is to work with nature, not against it. Michal and Martina are dedicated to maintaining a healthy eco-system in the wetlands, and they met with the Okanagan Similkameen Stewardship Society to understand how to manage the vineyards without upsetting the natural balance of the marshes.
THE WINEMAKER'S CUT WINES REPRESENT TWO SPECIAL WINES CHOSEN FROM THE VINEYARD: SAUVIGNON BLANC & SYRAH
They currently follow an integrated plant protection method of vineyard management and include biodynamic practices into their current system. No pesticides are used in the vineyard as this would have a severely detrimental effect on the delicate balance of the wetlands. Today, in addition to collecting multiple awards for their wines, Lunessence is proud to be a “Wildlife Habitat Steward” with the Stewardship Society. Proof that the wine industry can be sustainable and profitable while producing superior quality wines. The care and attention in the vineyard is apparent. The air is fresh and free from chemical residue and the atmosphere is

buzzing with life - and music. The care of the land, vines and wine extends beyond the physical and into the metaphysical. Classical music is played throughout the vineyard, winery, and cellar. Michal carefully selects music to influence the wine while it is being grown, made and aged. The notes of Giuseppe Verdi, W. A. Mozart, Gioacchino Rossini, Ruggero Leoncavallo, Pietro Mascagni and many others resound throughout Lunessence sending the subtle influences of sound through the atmosphere. Just as music has the ability to elevate our emotions, so it affects the plants with the notes and melodies that soothe, uplift, and inspire.
SEPTEMBER | OCTOBER
As Michal states, “Classical music is the thread that connects our vineyard, winemaking and our winery philosophy as a whole and we don’t take it lightly… Each wine requires different technique, music and feeling. This attention helps us to produce fine wines with deep character.” Michal began making wine in Europe and brings a traditional approach to winemaking. He believes that wines made traditionally hold the character of the varietal. They tend to have bigger structure and bouquet with deeper complexity and taste. Lunessence white wines benefit from long contact with both their skins and lees, which makes the lack of pesticides even
more attractive. And the barrels used are carefully selected to ensure the character of the variety is emphasised. Aging takes place in a variety of French, American, Hungarian and Slovakian barrels and even in old neutral wooden vats. Michal Mosny and Martina have worked hand-in-hand to manage the land and make the wine. And the dedication to quality has paid off. No marketing needed, the Lunessence label is gaining the recognition it deserves and the wines sell quickly. The best way to get your hands on a bottle of Lunessence before they sell out is to join the wine club, Amadeus.

KERRY MACNAULL
Nikki Callaway has already left an indelible mark on Quails' Gate's portfolio of award-winning wines. The winemaker will soon have five tasteand-innovation-driven vintages with the West Kelowna winery under her belt. One of her passions is matching the correct barrels to wines. Purchasing almost exclusively from French coopers in Burgundy and exhaustive tastings of varietals from barrel to barrel takes the quality of wines to another level. Think of it as adding the correct spice to a meal. "All our wines have an elegance to them they didn't have before," says Quails' Gate communications and marketing manager Lindsay Kelm. One of Quails' Gate's signature whites, Chasselas, recently scored 90 points from respected wine judge and writer John
Schreiner, confirming these subtle changes are netting results. Kiwi native Chad Douglas recently joined the team as viticulturist with experience from Chehalem Winery in Oregon's Willamette Valley and Quails' Gate's vineyards are already benefitting from his knowledge and new practices. The gifted team is rounded out by 18-year-veteran vineyard manager Jo Breti. "The quality of winemakers and viticulturists the Okanagan is attracting is a testament to the caliber of the Okanagan wine region," says Kelm. The evolution of Quails' Gate continues with additional planting of 160 acres in East Kelowna, almost doubling the winery's current 200 acres of grapes. Plans call for a new onsite winemaking facility and tasting room at the East Kelowna property, in addition to the existing flagship winery overlooking Okanagan Lake on West Kelowna's Boucherie Road. You don’t have to be a winemaker, or viticulturalist to be hands on in the winemaking process! Recognizing the growing desires of oenophiles to get involved and enjoy new experiences, Quails’ Gate will be offering a “Working Viticultural Class” followed by lunch in the vineyard, a brand new Okanagan Wine Festival experience this fall.

WE ST KELOWNA AUTUMN CELEBRATIONS AT
Volcanic HillsEstateWinery LESLEY BUXTON
Autumn promises to be an exciting time at Volcanic Hills Estate Winery. The family-run winery known for delicious award winning wines will be hosting an open-house October 1st. Wine aficionados will not want to miss the chance to enjoy complimentary tastings and tour the estate with the winery’s president, Bobby Gidda. This is a rare opportunity to learn firsthand from Bobby a detailed account of the ins-and-outs of the estate’s winemaking practices, and visit the barrel and tank rooms as well as the vineyards—weather permitting, of course. The tours will take place at 12:30 and 2:30 and there’s no need to book, all are welcome. To celebrate this year’s Okanagan Wine Festival running from September 28th to October 8th, the Winery’s Blu Saffron Bistro will be offering a special a la carte menu designed especially by chef Colin Rayner for the occasion. In order not to be disappointed, reservations are highly recommended —especially at dinnertime. The bistro is a popular eatery among wine lovers and people return time and again. In mid-October the winery will be releasing its Late Harvest Gewürztraminer.
PRESIDENT BOBBY GIDDA IN THE VINEYARD.
This is fabulous news as the estate’s vineyard offers near perfect growing conditions for this varietal. Late Harvest Gewürztraminers are made by leaving the grapes on the vine after they’ve reached maximum ripeness. This means the grapes dehydrate on the vine, increasing the sugar content while simultaneously preserving their acidity. In his tasting notes, Bobby describes their wine as displaying notes of lemon, honey, apricot and orange. The finish is well balanced with the perfect acidity. These wines are often considered dessert wines but many enjoy pairing them with Thai curries or robust cheeses. Why not pick yourself up a bottle and have fun discovering your own pairings. You won’t regret it. www.volcanichillswinery.com
Stewards Of The Land KALALA
HENRIETTA POIRIER
At Kalala, the philosophy is continuous improvement, both in the vineyard and the winery. They continuously undertake in-house funded research projects on understanding the roles of various yeasts, yeast nutrients, and other organic supplements in their fermentation technologies in the winery. In the vineyard,
they have successfully completed several research projects to understand and improve on the health of the soil and vines. It is this care and attention to the product combined with an open mind to new techniques that positions Kalala as a producer of quality wines and steward of the land. This year, Kalala would like to welcome a new winemaker to the team, Victoria Cianciolo. Victoria studied oenology at Niagara College in Ontario, and after concluding her practicum at Kalala, she was pleased to be offered a full-time position. She completed her studies in Ontario and immediately returned to Kalala where she works closely with Tibby (winemaker) and Karnail (owner) to carry on the tradition of making award-winning wines. Victoria has found her time at Kalala to be wholly inspiring, and the atmosphere kind and instructive. The hands-on teaching and wealth of knowledge shared has taken her understanding of winemaking from theory, to practice, to the final product, and it has been an exciting and rewarding experience. This fall, take a trip to Kalala to make sure you don’t miss their latest unique blend, a Madeira style, a sweet full-bodied wine with rich autumnal tones - a perfect conclusion to Thanksgiving dinner or to chase the chill from winter nights. If you can’t make it to the winery, consider joining the Kalala Wine Club. Members are given access to new releases and library vintage wines, as well as discounts and invitations to exclusive events.
WE LET NATURE TAKE THE LEAD Kalala, meaning “Miracle Place”, is the symbol of our commitment to harmony with nature, organic viticulture practices, and our wines. We produce light-to-crisp white wines, bold red wines, and have one of the largest portfolios of organic Icewines in British Columbia. Our philosophy is to allow the varietal characteristics and terroir to be truly expressed and only enhanced by minimal handling during winemaking. We welcome you to visit our tasting room and experience the finest of what the Okanagan has to offer.

COME UP TO CIAO BELLA WINERY
& Spend the Afternoon in Italy BLAKE ALLEN
WE ST KELOWNA
There’s a kind of magic to an Italian countryside harvest. Vineyard patriarchs in flat caps calling to their workers from across the vineyards, as the autumn light gives everything it touches a golden glow. But why fly out to Italy when this magic can be experienced right here in West Kelowna! Nestled atop the West Kelowna Farm Loop sits Ciao Bella Winery, an artisanal winery that’s cut from another world. The old world to be specific! The Fiume family, with their deep roots in the Italian region of Napoli, have created an authentic Italian countryside winery. Ever popular with locals not only for their award winning wines, but also for their idyllic grape-lined garden, which hosts the occasional live performance of traditional Italian folk music (sometimes as scheduled and sometimes with more, impromptu notice). Basking in the evening sun, guests are whisked away to the Italian countryside as they sip a glass of Pinot Nero in the garden and watch proprietor Roberto, adorned in traditional flat cap, call out across the vineyard in Italian. Come out, and be welcomed into the famiglia.
2016
Pinot Grigio
Made in the traditional Italian-style, this exquisite off-dry white is fruit forward with crisp hints of green apple and apricots, replete with a citric nose and a buttery finish.
2016
Pinot Rosé
Fun, refreshing and fruit forward, this delightful wine awakens the palate with bursts of strawberries and rhubarb underscored by hints of succulent watermelon and wild cherry.
2016 Pinot
Nero
This ever popular red greets you with a nose that’s fresh out of the garden and rich with the aroma of strawberries, cherries, and raspberries. The body is mild and rich in fruit, with just a touch of chocolate. This exquisite wine looks to defend the previous vintage’s title of BC’s Best Pinot Noir.

Pickle Recipe: START FRESH
CHEF MICHAEL BUFFETT
KELOWNA INGREDIENTS: • 4 lbs pickling cucumbers - prepared as per above • 4 cups water • 3 cups cider vinegar • 2 Tbsp pickling salt • 2 Tbsp pickling spices (peppercorns, coriander seeds, chili flakes, mustard seeds, bay leaves)
FOR EACH JAR: • 1 bunch flowering dill • 2-6 garlic cloves • 1-2 hot peppers
PROCESS: Clean jars and lids in boiling water, for 30 seconds or longer. Remove carefully and set aside on a clean surface. PREPARE: Your pickling liquid by boiling your spices, salt, vinegar and water. Strain and reserve.
After 3-4 months they are ready, in time to mark the holiday season! The first opening, usually after long anticipation, is a...
Joyous Occasion.
As we always say, there is no substitute for Starting with Fresh ingredients. Cucumbers that are picked same-day (or within 24 hours) are the best, as they produce crisp and crunchy pickles. It is unlikely that you’ll find this at most grocery stores, so our recommendation? Grow your own, or find a local farmer that will allow you to help harvest from the garden! On arrival to the kitchen - clean your cucumbers well, cut the flowering end off of each vegetable, and place them into an ice water bath until ready to pickle. By cutting off the end, the cucumber will be able to soak up as much brine as possible, and by storing them in water until they reach their final stage in the jar, they will stay firm and full of juice, giving you the BEST pickles in town.
WORKING WITH ONE JAR AT A TIME: • Place pickles in the jar, leaving room in between, but making good use of space. • Place the flowering dill into the jar. Dill is cheap in the fall when you can buy 4 foot tall “trees” of it for a few dollars. • Add garlic cloves, and hot peppers as desired, for larger jars feel free to add more! • Fill to 1/4 inch with pickling liquid release air bubbles, ensure 1/4 inch headspace remains. Carefully wipe the lid and seal the jar. • Repeat the above steps for each jar, and when complete, process all jars in a boiling water bath for 10 minutes. A few boiling rounds may be required, depending on the size of your pot.
Chef Michael Buffett is a revelation. With a strong history of running high standard kitchens in Alberta, Michael decided to go west to follow a dream. A spectacular, heart driven dream that has recently become a reality and manifested itself properly into a bricks and mortar location in Kelowna – as well as one built from soil. His manifesto: “We aim to inspire people to grow and cook fresh and healthy foods, and to build a stronger community.” The idea was to create a non-profit farm and garden atmosphere to educate and provide those in need with life skills including the tools to grow food. He was gifted some land off of Gordon Drive last year and went to work, preparing the soil to be planted. That garden project is thriving—on to part two. To set up a catering kitchen business/cooking school that would provide fun classes for the public to learn from as well as educational classes to inspire those in need to enter the culinary profession. Of course, they would inspire and base all education focusing on the farm to table philosophy and use produce grown on the Start Fresh garden project. Full circle. Project complete. Now housed in the Landmark #2 building, this beautiful project is flourishing. High fives Michael- we are cheering you on! Read more about the projects here and check out the cooking classes: www.startfreshproject.com

FROM ME TO ME AND OTHERS:
The Okanagan Table ROSLYNE BUCHANAN
Chef Rod Butters’ long-awaited cookbook, The Okanagan Table: The Art of Everyday Home Cooking, is a love letter to the region. Taking my cue from the old advertisement in which the guy liked Remington razors so much that he bought the company, I’m buying it as an ideal gift – for myself, and for guests who love to visit and friends who love to live here. Fans of Butters, who was inducted into the BC Restaurant Hall of Fame in 2007 by his peers, and of his RauDZ Creative Concepts restaurants, co-owned with Audrey Surrao, are ecstatic to obtain his first cookbook. Signed copies are offered at all three locations including RauDZ Regional Table and micro bar • bites in Kelowna and Terrafina at Hester Creek by RauDZ in Oliver. You can always pair it with deliciousness created by RauDZ for purchase such as the blackberry ketchup or mustard, or with a gift certificate for a night out. Published by Figure 1 Vancouver, The Okanagan Table offers 80 recipes and more than 120 photos by local professional David McIlvride. The stunning photography was shot throughout the valley and in Butters’ own home. Canadian culinary icons, Bernard Casavant, Anita Stewart and Jamie Maw wrote the forewords. Plus, Butters kept it local by printing it in Canada rather than overseas like many cookbooks you find on the shelves. Another departure from the
norm, it’s structured by time of day: Sunrise, Midday, Sunset and Twilight. Butters geared this book to the home cook addressing celebrity chef Daniel Boulud’s complaint, “there is many great chefs and many great cookbooks, but none of them work at home”. Butters ensured every recipe has a photograph as a tangible reference in recreating his dishes and he prepared each one at home rather than in restaurant kitchens. Butters suggests, “Get this book dirty – dog-ear the pages, write in the margins, stuff your grandmother’s best recipes for Swedish meatballs and zucchini loaf between the pages.” Butters points out cooking should be inclusionary. “We gather in the kitchen because it’s comforting, and it harkens back to the happy feelings that a warm, aromatic kitchen instilled in us as kids. I wrote this book for people who love to cook. It’s not intended to blow minds or turn cooking into a lab experiment and at its heart, it’s about my passionate relationship to food.” Showcasing seasonal produce and the unbelievable ingredients chefs and home cooks experience in the Okanagan, it shares restaurant and home favourites. You’ll find Chef’s World-Famous Pancakes – made since he was seven, RauDZ staple/Fresco carryover Oat-Crusted Arctic Char, tapas like RauDZ stuffed calamari and micro’s addictive duck-fat popcorn, plus some beloved cocktails from their Liquid Chefs.

SANDHILL’S LEGENDARY MASTER WINEMAKER
Howard Soon Retires
Located in the heart of downtown Kelowna, Sandhill Winery sets itself apart from every other winery in the Okanagan. The first urban winery in British Columbia, Sandhill prides itself on not only producing award-winning wine, but also being accessible for everyone. “Being an urban winery helps us to connect with our community, downtown Kelowna is right next door,” says Sandhill Winery estate manager, Patricia Leslie. “We truly value the relationship we have with both the businesses downtown as well as residents and tourists.” Although Sandhill was established in 1997, it carries a lot of history. It is situated on the same property as British Columbia’s oldest winery, Calona Vineyards. Sandhill’s location, at 1125 Richter St., gives people the option of grabbing a glass

of wine on their way to dinner, or even stopping by for a tasting after lunch. People can also visit Sandhill while on the Grapes to Grains Trail, a walking and cycling route connecting downtown Kelowna’s distilleries, breweries, a cidery, and of course its’ staple winery. Starting September 8th, Sandhill will be bringing back its popular happy hour for the second year in a row. Running from 5 - 7 p.m. every Friday nights, guests can chose from a selection of Sandhill’s finest wines. With prices ranging from $5 to $8 a glass, not only will visitors barely put a dent in their wallet but also they will get to try some of the best wine in the country. Additionally, every other Friday, Sandhill hosts live music. Sandhill’s 8,000 square foot venue makes it the perfect place to book an event. Its industrial inspired modern architecture

was designed to mimic its urban setting. Decorated with plush orange sofas, and rustic wooden detailing, Sandhill has seamlessly married modern and sleek, with cozy and comforting. This year marks Sandhill’s 20th anniversary, and with their master winemaker Howard Soon just recently retired, it also marks an era of change for the winery. “We will celebrate our 20 year history all year long, and with Howard retiring, it’s also about passing the torch so to speak, to our next winemaker,” said Leslie.. “It’s exciting for us to be able to still have his touch,” says Leslie. “We’re actively recruiting to find a winemaker, but it’s about finding the right fit for Sandhill, there are some big shoes to fill.” However, Soon will be returning to Sandhill this fall, for their annual Small
Lots Winemaker Dinner, held Saturday, September 30th. Specializing in single vineyard wines, it only makes sense that Sandhill hosts a dinner dedicated to small lot wines. Held in the winery’s barrel room, the intimate dinner only seats 46 fortunate guests. Soon will be partnering with Chef Bernard Casavant and Okanagan College for the second year in a row. With the help of Okanagan College Culinary Arts Program students, Casavant will prepare an Italian-inspired meal, paired with Sandhill’s small lot wines - a true testament to Soon’s masterful winemaking. The theme of the dinner is the “Road to Riccione,” and partial proceeds will go to funding an awarded trip to Riccione, Italy, for a few lucky culinary students.
A Cider for

KELOWNA
AT THE VIEW ABBEY WESTBURY
PRESIDENT JENNIFER MOLGAT HAS BOTH CIDER AND WINE ON OFFER AT THE VIEW.
There’s a not-so-well-kept secret hiding inside the old packinghouse at The View Winery. Beyond the charming tasting room, you’ll find the Wards Cider Bar –a lowkey, welcoming showcase for a portfolio of expertly crafted hard ciders. This is a story of family tradition, honed and perfected over decades. Great Granddad Ward planted fresh market apples here in 1918. Years later, his grandson added cider-specific varieties. In 2012, his great granddaughter (The View’s Jennifer Molgat) introduced Wards Hard Apple Cider in BC, to resounding success. The five ciders in the Wards repertoire are unique and delicious, with an elevated approachability that makes them enjoyable with a meal or on their own. The elegant Picker’s Hut is has the colour and characteristics of a sparkling wine. It’s dry and fruit-forward (zesty apple flavours, of course!), with a perfectly balanced natural acidity and 6% alcohol. Like a more laid back kid brother, the easy-drinking Wards Hard Cider has a similar tasting profile, but lower alcohol. Also aromatic and fruity, this crisp and refreshing cider would be right at home at your backyard barbeque. Ward’s has also managed to master the fickle science of flavour-infused ciders.
Festive adds a gentle suggestion of cherries and a beautiful , rich pink colour ideally suited to a Thanksgiving table. Ginger infuses a subtle gingersnap flavour on the nose and palate (silver medal winner at the Portland International Cider Cup). Winter Spice, appropriate to the upcoming season, was designed to be enjoyed warm or cold. Bright citrus meets Grandma’s homemade apple pie in the glass. Join Wards Cider and The View Winery on October 7th, for the 3rd annual Ciders and Sliders harvest celebration. Live music, gourmet sliders and, of course, the complete Ward’s Cider line-up offer plenty of reasons to raise a glass to the season!

12 th
Annual Organic Okanagan Festival
HOSTED AT SUMMERHILL ROSLYNE BUCHANAN
The phenomenal 12th Annual Organic Okanagan Festival is again hosted by Summerhill Pyramid Winery on Sunday, September 24th. As recently reported, organics is the fastest growing segment of the wine and food industry in the world. Summerhill has been a leader winning the top awards in the world with their organic wines, demonstrating that organic is not only good for your body and the planet, but tastes good, too! According to Vancouver Sun wine columnist Anthony Gismondi, organic wine is now going mainstream. The Organic Okanagan Festival showcases local organic farmers and certified food production. It’s a real festival! There is live music and entertainment, featuring the Cipes family’s band “The Oot n’ Oots” among the lineup. Experience the dynamic and healthy lifestyle of the Organic Okanagan vision, a model to the world. There are now thousands of signatures on the Organic Okanagan Declaration, including most of the mayors, First Nations chiefs, and

celebrities such as David Suzuki, Maryanne Williamson, and Robert Bateman. You can take an active role! By signing you will be declaring that: “1. The pristine Okanagan Valley is a northernmost semi-desert viticulture region, with the least amount of pests of any commercial fruit growing region in the world, making it the easiest to achieve organic transition. 2. We the undersigned do hereby DECLARE that the Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, Canada is an ideal agricultural and residential region to demonstrate a model of returning to living in harmony with nature, thereby creating A DIAMOND ON OUR EMERALD PLANET! 3. The Okanagan Valley is surrounded by mountainous wilderness for hundreds of kilometres in every direction, a unique agricultural oasis. This highly vulnerable and delicate eco-system has been historically protected by the original stewards, the Okanagan Indigenous Peoples. We DECLARE that this precious valley deserves to be

honoured and protected for all generations to come. 4. The 135-km long Lake Okanagan supplies a vast portion of the region’s drinking water. It is dangerously one of the world’s easiest lakes to stifle with its Lake Retention Time (total turnover time) of 52.8 years! The toxic farming chemicals now draining into the lake at unprecedented rates threaten the vitality and health of all life in the region. 5. We the undersigned speak and act in concert with the region’s urgent plight as we fully understand that we are all interconnected. We live by and for each other, one whole living entity that includes all there is. Our highest possible intentions are the perpetuation and protection of our precious planet by setting forth our vision of a perfect example and world model. 6. We hereby DECLARE that we shall transition all our lawns, gardens, municipal areas, highways, parks, school playgrounds, sports and recreational areas, orchards, vineyards and farms of all kinds to certified organic practices.”
Cipes is encouraged that organic wine is the single fastest growing segment of the wine industry. “The economic rewards and sustainability of growing organic are now proven positive, thanks in great part to worldwide enthusiasm. Statistics are showing vast market share leaps in the consumption of organic foods and beverages. As well, organic farms are now demonstrating that organic practices are cost effective.” “Summerhill’s prestigious awards including Best Chardonnay in the World for the 2014 Chardonnay Icewine at the Chardonnay du Monde® 2017 Burgundy, France, and the unprecedented 100 points/double gold awarded to 2013 Semillon Icewine at the San Francisco International Wine Competition, prove healthy wines taste good.” Summerhill now offers a self-guided option. A free download, summerhill.bc.ca/ app developed by Matthew Jensen, scans images from signs strategically placed throughout the property to enhance your tour with videos.

PROFESSOR GABRIEL BALINT
OKANAGAN COLLEGE’S
New Viticulture
Technician Program JENNA HICKMAN
Wine lovers may want to go back to school after hearing about Okanagan College’s new viticulture technician program. Over the past three years Okanagan College has been working with B.C. Wine and Grape Council to create the program. Set in Penticton - the heart of the Okanagan wine scene, the new two year diploma will provide students with practical and theoretical knowledge on working in the wine production industry. The program is a government funded pilot project. Upon graduating, students will know how to plant, maintain and run a vineyard and have the skills needed to get a mid level job in the wine industry. According to Jonathan Rouse - the associate dean of the Okanagan School of Business and director of food, wine and tourism, the program is one of a kind. “No one in Canada has been able to develop this two year viticulture technician diploma - we’re the first to do it,” Rouse says. “It’s a combination of pent up demand and strong interest.” Just over 40 people have applied to the program since November 1, 2016 when the college started taking applications. However only 20 will be accepted. Many of the applicants already have one or in some cases, two degrees, and are looking for a career change says Rouse. Of the applicants, about half are local, with the remaining half being from other parts of Canada. However, so far there have been two international applicants. Rouse says he’s even had people show interest in the 2018 school year. “One of the exciting aspects of this program is all the graduates will become ambassadors for the Okanagan,” Rouse says.
“It’s another way to expose B.C. wines to other parts of Canada, and the globe.” The program includes a co-op portion in its’ second year, which will further expand the Okanagan brand. “We hope and expect students to travel overseas to other great wine regions of the world, such as South Africa, the Champagne region in France, and the Rhein region in Germany,” Rouse says. However, as much fun as the program sounds, it will be equally as challenging. Students will a strong background in science and math will have a leg up, says viticulture technician professor Gabriel Balint. Balint has a PhD in viticulture and enology and is a viticulture and wine consultant. “A lot of farmers know what to do, but not necessarily why they’re doing it,” he says. “You need to make a connection between science knowledge and practice so you can make better choices when you have to make a decision in your vineyard - you don’t just play grow grapes for fun, to make a profit you really need to be knowledgeable.” In order to gain a better working knowledge of the wine industry, every week students will spend at least three hours in a vineyard. “You cannot learn viticulture only in the classroom, you need to be exposed to the industry,” Balint says. Additionally, by making connections in the industry, Balint says students will find it easy to land jobs after graduation. “The great this is with a young program, you really have the freedom to do what you want - you’re not stuck in tradition,” says Balint. “Living in the Okanagan we already are getting to be known for our wine, but we’re still young - the future is really exciting.”

FATHER AND SON AT WORK IN THE VINEYARD – JACK AND WAYNE MANSER.
LARCH HILLS WINERY
Celebrates
JENNIFER SCHELL
20 Years
A beautiful forest-lined drive up Timms Road in Salmon Arm will bring you to the top of Larch Hills. There you will be greeted with an astonishing view of the Shuswap below from North America’s highest altitude winery, Larch Hills Winery. Surrounded by an estate vineyard, you will find an Austrian style tasting room where the warm hospitality of the Manser family awaits. Proprietor Jack Manser was thrilled this year when both of his boys returned home to join the family business. Roman and Wayne had been working in Edmonton when the wine industry beckoned. Each have their own favorite jobs on the estate, but both are interested in learning all aspects from vine to bottle from their father. Roman’s wife Sasha is managing the tasting shop and Wayne’s
girlfriend Coreena is also involved in daily operations. The family celebrated their 20th anniversary on August 27th with a big BBQ at the winery for their friends and fans. Guests were treated to delicious food as well as super discounts on wines that day. On theme with their anniversary year, Larch Hills has launched a wine club! Details and sign up information is on their website (www.larchhillswinery.com) and members will have the luxury of not having to worry about missing out on purchasing their favorite wines like the Tamarack Rosé that sells out quickly each year. This is a unique winery that features some very special cool climate wines like Siegerrebe, Ortega, Madeline Angevine – making this a must destination for wine aficionados expanding their wine knowledge.

An exciting new wine was released and it will immediately become the most expensive wine in the portfolio! Named after Recline Ridge co-owner Maureen’s grandfather, “Maurice’s” is a fortified Sherrystyle wine made from Ortega grapes using a proprietary method of fermentation. Only a very small amount of this special wine was produced. Tastings will be offered on a request-only basis, funded by a “toonie” charge. Since it pairs nicely with roasted nuts and dried fruit, they will offer this food pairing with the tasting for those customers making the request. Newly released vintages include the 2016 Shuswap Serenade (a blend of Madeline Angevine and Madeline Sylvaner), the 2016 Ortega, 2016 Siegerrebe, 2016 Bacchus, and the 2016 Make Me Blush (a pink blend

of Pinot Noir and Marichel Foch). The 2016 Hummingbird’s Kiss, a stunning sweet wine made from Optima and Bacchus, was bottled in late August and is due for release mid-September. How different are each of the vintages from one another? “You would see variation from vintage to vintage,” says co-owner Graydon Ratzlaff, noting that variations are often subtle and mostly due to the differing weather each year. “These varietals have strong personalities,” he explains, so vintage variation is rarely ever huge or noticeable. Graydon is careful to use the same fruit handling techniques in the winery to minimize this variation even more. Recline Ridge is open seven days a week until the end of October but will be reopening for weekends in December.

No, I am not inebriated, but having a profound experience. You see, I am not new to wine tasting. In fact, I have been to hundreds of wine tastings. I have a wine education background as a certified sommelier, completing the ISG program in 2011. But, right now, I'm sitting down with Alysha Harker, the regional territory manager for Riedel glassware for a tasting. I am feeling pretty smug. I'm anticipating the taste of certain wines will be enhanced by sipping them from a varietal-specific glass. But, I didn’t expect to be truly blown away. Our first wine, a Riesling from Kitsch Winery in Kelowna, is poured into our elegant Riesling glass. I like the look of the wine as it hits the light. I get ready to sniff and swirl, but Alysha surprises me by asking us to pour some of the Riesling into the Chardonnay glass and a portion into the Cabernet-Merlot glass, too. First, we're urged to take a good long sniff of the Riesling in the Rieslingspecific glass. The aroma is wonderful.

It’s reminiscent of a fuzzy peach and other aromatic orchard fruit with a slight twist of ginger. Another long sniff and a hint of gasoline is detected, which is indicative of this varietal. Then a whiff from the Chardonnay glass. It’s all gasoline with no trace of the lovely citrus aromas we first encountered. Finally, we swirl and prepare to go nose deep into the Cabernet- Merlot glass. This time we're met with a pungent sour smell. How can this have happened? But wait, it’s even more noticeable when we taste. A big swirl and the varietal-specific Riesling glass gloriously tilts the wine to the back of my throat. It’s a matrimony of fruit and acid in perfect harmony. Following up in the Chardonnay glass, the acid has disappeared and I get a

mouthful of flabby and disappointing wine. In the case of the Cabernet-Merlot glass, it’s sour and thin. I look eagerly back to Alysha, hoping for the go ahead to return to the Riesling glass where everything is perfect. We get the nod and the resulting sips return smiles to our faces. We repeat this exercise with three different varietals. Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and finally, a Cabernet Sauvignon. The outcomes are the same. Each varietal in the Riedel varietalspecific glass looks, smells and tastes divine. In any other varietal glass, various woes appear, from unripened fruit flavors to wines smelling far too “hot.” And in some instances, tasting that way too. This is when Alysha gives us the explanation: “It’s all down to physics.”

Riedel is a family-owned company currently run by Maximilian Riedel. He is the grandson of Claus Riedel, a glassware expert and one of the first to recognize the taste of wine is affected by the shape of the glass. He set about designing stemware that would connect the wine and the mouth. The tip of the tongue detects sweetness, the sides the sour and bitter, and the back of the tongue salty. When the stemware places wine on the correct part of the tongue, the best representation of the wine is smelled and tasted. Apparently, we are not the only converts. Queen Elizabeth II ordered Burgundy Grand Cru glasses for herself after being introduced to Riedel. While I 'm not royalty, I want to truly enjoy the best expression a great bottle of wine can offer. It's why I'm putting in my Riedel stemware order now.
