Quiddich Championships Flying Back to Abbotsford!

“The person is a certified official who is neutral to both teams,” says Yara Kodershah, communications director at Quidditch Canada.

Nov. 7, 7:30 p.m. - Abbotsford Centre abbotsfordcentre.ca

“The sport has been, from its inception, full contact and gender-integrated, meaning that anyone is welcome to play,” says Kodershah. “Not many people realize how huge this sport is all over the world, and in particular, how fast it is growing among young athletes. We felt it would be great to bring it back to the community,” says Blanchette. “Abbotsford is already known as a premiere sport hosting city in Canada, so it is only natural that we look to reach new sports like Quidditch and offer them the same great hospitality we’re known for.” For more information on the event, visit quidditchcanada.com.

Don’t be fooled by the whimsical origin of the sport. The real life adaptation draws from elements of dodgeball, rugby, handball, and flag football, with possibility of injury that no Vulnera Sanentur spell could fix.

Matches are played between two teams of seven. Players score a goal when they throw a quaffle (volleyball) through any one of three hoops on either side of the field. Each goal is worth ten points and catching the Snitch is worth one-hundred fifty points. The game ends when the Snitch is caught - conceived in the series as a magical flying ball with wings - but in this world, played by an actual person.

Most people who have heard of Quidditch know it as the sport played on broomsticks 150 feet in the air. Six teams from Vancouver, Victoria, Burnaby, Edmonton, and Calgary will “swoop” into the field at W.J. Mouat Secondary to battle it out on broomsticks, albeit on turf.

The Farmer and the Foodie I’m going to bet the farm (figuratively only, of course) that you are probably unaware that Canada is the world’s leading mustard seed grower, providing up to 80% of the world’s supply, exporting the majority of the crop to be refined into.. you guessed it...mustard! The hot, dry Prairie summers and long, cold winters are ideal conditions for the yellow, brown and Oriental seeds of this short growing season crop. So it’s only natural that it took a small-town Prairie chef to create the best line of flavoured mustards I have ever tasted. While apprenticing in a fine dining establishment, young Chef Carly quickly learnt the versatility of mustard and how effortlessly adding a spoonful to marinades, salad dressings, sauces, and meats could take dishes to new heights. After experimenting on her friends by adding quintessential Canadian flavours like beer, cranberries

and maple syrup, Smak Dab Mustard was born and in two short years she has been named the “2017 Rising Star” by Food and Beverage Manitoba. But my favourite part of her story is that her 82-year-old Grandfather works on the assembly line with her! You won’t get much more Canadian than this month’s Smak Dab original recipe, featuring Lepp’s Osoyoos orchard apples, Canadian smoked cheddar and Smak Dab maple mustard! This creative and easy small all bite will be the star of your next dinnerr party as you surprise and Ap delight the leppfa p l y a t : rmma friends around rke career t.com/ your table with s this uniquely ly Canadian product. ct.

When hosting a Halloween party, it helps to determine who will be in attendance before making any plans. Parties that include children should be PG in nature, and hosts should find the right balance between scary and fun. While you want to have a certain measure of the macabre, make sure you don’t send young guests home with nightmares. Reserve gruesome decorations and details for adult-only parties.

Many people can’t wait to dress up for a Halloween party, even picking out their costumes months in advance. Still, not everyone feels comfortable donning a costume. To welcome all guests, don’t make costumes mandatory. One way around this is to set up a Halloween Disguise Table full of accessories that anyone can borrow and use to alter their appearance. Goofy glasses, strange hats, adhesive mustaches, or masks can be fun.

Some people like to get creative with Halloween cuisine, crafting foods into items that may look like parts of the body or other symbols of the holiday. Cookie cutters can turn sandwiches, desserts, biscuits, and many other foods into different shapes. However, foods

Eat Well, Feel Well - Are You Matters Getting Enough Vitamin B12? B12 and increase the risk of deficiency. Alcohol and other substances are also known to deplete B vitamins including Vitamin B12, contributing to deficiencies, affecting mood and altering the memory centers in the brain, making supplementation with B vitamins essential. Vegetarians or anyone at risk of Vitamin B12 deficiency require supplementation with sublingual Vitamin B12 or Vitamin B12 shots.

We have all had those sudden quick lapses in short term memory – Ever forget where you placed your keys? Went into a room to get an item but the item you were looking for suddenly slipped your mind? What about forgetting where you parked your car? Do these sudden brain fog experiences sound familiar? The frequency of these forgetful symptoms could be your brains way of ‘reminding’ you that you may not be getting enough Vitamin B12 (also known as Cobalamin).

not sleep deprived. Vitamin B12 helps blood carry oxygen in the body (which is essential for energy) and it is also required to form red blood cells. A deficiency of Vitamin B12 can cause anemia, making you feel weak, tired, light headed and lethargic. The absorption of Vitamin B12 requires intrinsic factor (produced with stomach acid). As we get older our stomach produces less acid and insufficient amounts of intrinsic factor, making us more prone to deficiency. Medication that decreases the secretion of stomach acid such as antacids, antihistamines, proton pump inhibitors and even some diabetes medication such as Metformin can decrease the absorption of Vitamin

Vitamin B12 (commonly found in foods such as; meat, poultry, fish, eggs, oysters, lamb and liver) plays an essential role in the normal functioning of the brain and the nervous system. It is required to manufacture neurotransmitters (the chemical messengers in the brain) and produce the myelin sheath (the insulating layer found around nerves), which allows electrical impulses to transmit messages quickly and efficiently along nerve cells. A lack of Vitamin B12 in your diet or poor absorption of the vitamin could cause mental fog, affect your memory and dampen your mood. Depression is actually a common symptom of Vitamin B12 deficiency. The role of Vitamin B12 in mental health is expanding and this valuable vitamin is now known to be vital in maintaining brain mass and preventing brain shrinkage often associated with Dementia. Ever had a good long sleep but not rejuvenated or revitalized when you’re up? Instead of waking up well rested you find yourself feeling tired, wanting to sleep more? Sound familiar? Confusing right? Why pre-planning for your estate can save your family

Matters

Free, Nov. 9 discussion explores vital wills, probate and estate issues Sponsored by Cindy Boury Private Wealth Management

pre-planning can help avoid unexpected fees and probate costs.

The last thing families want after a loved one’s passing is conflict over the estate, yet too often, without the right preplanning, that’s exactly what happens.

Avoiding wills variation

A free Nov. 9 educational session from Abbotsford’s Cindy Boury Private Wealth Management, an independent wealth advisor with investment dealer Raymond James Ltd., aims to help families change that. Understanding Wills, Probate & Estates is open to all interested in gaining a better understanding of probate, how to avoid wills variation and other interesting estate issues. Why pre-planning is essential By far the most common issue families experience in estate matters is fall-out from lack of planning and communication. “It’s important to design the estate while people are alive, otherwise it can ruin the family and create hardship,” explains Cindy, who emphasizes the importance of education and communication with clients and their families. Additionally,

Broaching the topic of wills and estates with our families often isn’t easy, but it is necessary. When planning and communication don’t happen and conflict among beneficiaries arises after a death, application for a will variation can follow, a step that incurs legal costs, possible court time, stress and family conflict, with no guarantee of the end result. Instead, Cindy encourages a comprehensive estate planning process involving the family if the client wants, including everything from real estate, business assets and life insurance to Registered Savings Plans and Tax-Free Savings Accounts. “People need to design their estate properly with the aid of a professional experienced in estate management,” Cindy says. “It gives everyone peace of mind.” Attending educational events and meeting with an experienced advisor can help people make those wellinformed decisions. A holistic approach
