Be a role model, be a peace officer and change lives BC CORRECTIONS AIMS TO BOOST HIRING NUMBERS WITH PROFESSIONALS PASSIONATE ABOUT MAKING A DIFFERENCE Scott Bertrand recalls receiving the hand-written thankyou card in the mail. That’s not unusual but this card was from a former inmate and Bertrand was one of the BC Correctional officers who oversaw his time in the provincial correctional system. As a young correctional officer, new to the job, Bertrand supervised the man’s living unit, learning that they grew up in the same hometown. It was the inmate’s first time in a correctional centre and he was having some family challenges. “He needed someone to talk to, about his life and plans. He saw there was no judgment from me and I was able to relate some of my experiences to what he was going through,” Bertrand recalls. After the man’s release, he sent the card thanking Bertrand for taking the time. “We really do have an impact,” Bertrand says, moved to know he affected the life of another person. “I really saw that many of our inmates are receptive to change and we have a huge opportunity.” Double the opportunity Over the coming months, BC Corrections’ Adult Custody Division aims to double the number of new officers it typically hires – offering meaningful careers for men and women with the skills and personal qualities needed in today’s peace officers. “Our staff are our greatest asset and we believe they act as strong role models in both their personal and professional lives,” says Stephanie Macpherson, Provincial Director, BC Corrections, pointing to the BC Corrections’ vision of ‘Inspiring Excellence and Changing Lives’. “Our staff truly care about helping those who have found themselves in custody. They want to make a difference and have a positive influence on these men and women. We firmly believe our leaders are so successful because

they are such strong role models. Every moment we exercise the choice to display who we are as individuals and as officers. To us, it really is all about the people and believing there is an opportunity for change.” Marking 10 years with BC Corrections, Bertrand started working for the organization at 19, fulfilling years-long interest in the field. “I knew at a very young age that this was something I wanted to do,” he says. While incoming officers are often a little older, with other job and life experience, Bertrand brought both a keen interest, a background with the community and travelling, and awareness that communication would be one of his greatest strengths. Inmates of all ages appreciate his position of mutual respect, demonstrated through words and actions. “Communication is a huge part of what we do. I reinforce that I’m going to treat them with respect and all I ask in return is that they do the same,” he says. “As soon as a client sees that you feel that empathy, it’s amazing how much progress you can make with them,” Bertrand says. Rewards of the job On a personal level, the married father of young children appreciates the growth opportunities and work-life balance BC Corrections affords. With 10 correctional centres around B.C. housing about 2,800 inmates at any one time, BC Corrections employees work directly with inmates, supporting positive change in their lives and working toward successful reintegration into society. In addition to compensation, benefits and pension, a flexible shift schedule also allows officers to balance family responsibilities. Professionally, Bertrand also enjoys the diverse career opportunities with room to grow and advance.

Carli Berry Millennials are benefiting from starting small businesses, says a contractor for the Central Okanagan Economic Development Commission. Drew Vincent, of the Okanagan Young Professionals Collective, said he sees millennials starting their own businesses and working at smaller companies or start-ups and attributes it to the drive young professionals have to want to make a difference. “Really, the biggest thread is feeling like they make a contribution. Gone are the days of ‘sit down, shut up’ for 20 years and then you’ll have a voice at the table,” he said. Millennials don’t necessarily thrive when they work in large corporate offices, but when they work with a small company and see something come to life, they are encouraged, he said. “It’s having the opportunity to have the input but also working hard to achieve that end result,” he said. “That theme that young people don’t work hard, I think it’s that they want to work smart.” Black Press is hosting a career fair Sept. 14 at the Kelowna Curling Club from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Capital News spoke with UBCO and Okanagan College to determine what young graduates are choosing for their careers and where they want to live. “I think a lot of our students are finding work in the Okanagan. Of course when the oil patch was in full swing there were a lot of people headed north and to Alberta, but quite a few of them live in the Okanagan,” said director of public affairs at Okanagan College Allan Coyle.

“Look at the construction industry (in the Okanagan) now. The trades are certainly booming here in the region,” he said, adding he can’t specifically tell how many Okanagan College students are staying in the valley, but there has been an increase in interest in the trades, tech and tourism sectors. The college’s business program has also been increasing. According to Sharon De Vries, director of alumni services at UBC , she hears more stories of students starting their own career paths as entrepreneurs. She estimated about 25 per cent of UBCO students come from the Okanagan and finds around 60 per cent of students overall indicate they want to stay and work in the Okanagan after graduation. “Those are rough numbers because they do change,” she said, adding young adults also tend to move around to build their careers. With rental rates soaring in Vancouver, she said there’s more appeal to live in the Okanagan. However, primary living areas where graduates initially move to, continue to be in larger cities like Vancouver, Calgary and Toronto. “When you’re looking to build a career the larger cities have more opportunity,” she said. “You have to go where the work is as you build your career.” The Black Press Extreme Education and Career Fair takes places on Thursday, Sept. 14, at the Kelowna Curling Club (551 Recreation Ave.), from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more info: facebook.com/BlackPressExtremeEducationandCareerFair

BLACK PRESS EXTREME

EDUCATION & CAREER FAIR Young Canadians should consider a career in skilled trades Despite a diminishing supply of skilled trades workers, fewer young people than ever are pursuing these occupations in Canada. There remains a stigma around so-called blue-collar jobs, and young people are frequently unaware that professions in the trades can in fact be highly lucrative and rewarding. Skilled workers are in demand, and unlike many other types of employment, these jobs cannot be sent offshore. While no sector is impervious to economic downswings, many trade workers enjoy job security even during periods of great turmoil. UNIVERSITY VS. TRADE SCHOOL A streamlined path into a trade often involves completing a vocational program at a trade school. Unlike university programs, which require all students to take a variety of complementary (and often unrelated) classes, vocational programs focus entirely on preparing pupils for the reality of their chosen professions. In comparison to the four years it takes to complete an undergraduate degree, trade programs can either be twoyear associates degrees or even shorter certificate programs. This means trade school students can enter the workforce well ahead of their university-educated peers, and are also far more likely to find employment in a position related to their studies. A BRIGHT FUTURE FOR SKILLED TRADES WORKERS With an anticipated shortage of skilled workers looming on the horizon, young people who are proactive today have an excellent chance at finding themselves in high-earning, secure positions tomorrow. And thanks to government funding and incentives like the Apprentice Incentive Grant (AIG) and the Apprenticeship Completion Grant (ACG) — which can cover up to $4,000 for tuition, books, travel and tools — trade schools are now as affordable as they are practical.

EDUCATION & CAREER FAIR Medical sector trades

Your Schedule. Your Independence. Your Success. For over 50 years, Knowledge First Financial has provided a unique opportunity for those with the entrepreneurial spirit and drive to succeed. Our industry-leading compensation program includes a commission structure that rewards productivity and hard work.

You don’t have to be a doctor or a nurse to make a valuable contribution to the medical sector. There are a number of healthcare trades that make for rewarding and stable careers. With our country’s aging population, these trades are expected to be in high demand in the coming years. If you want to give back while you earn a living, consider one of the following vocations. RADIATION THERAPIST These professionals deliver radiation treatments to patients with cancer and other aggressive diseases. Using cutting-edge equipment, they administer therapeutic doses of radiation, always taking great care to ensure quantities are accurate. This job can be as taxing as it is rewarding, as it involves working with people who are seriously ill. DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING TECHNOLOGIST These technicians are responsible for producing high-quality medical images to allow doctors to monitor and assess a patient’s physical condition. They oper-

ate technologically advanced equipment such as MRIs, X-rays, CTs and ultrasounds. RESPIRATORY THERAPIST These medical professionals evaluate, treat and manage patients experiencing difficulties breathing. They help people who have asthma, emphysema, bronchitis and other cardiopulmonary abnormalities, and analyze and test data — X-rays, blood samples, sputum specimens — to determine the best course of treatment in conjunction with physicians. They also conduct rehabilitation activities. MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNOLOGIST These techs work in labs assessing a range of specimens. Every test ordered by a physician — blood work, throat swab, urine sample, etc. — must be analyzed by a medical laboratory technologist using highly precise tools. They play a vital role in identifying illnesses and helping doctors diagnose patients.

We also offer: • Flexible hours so you can create the work/life balance of your choosing • Bonuses based on performance • Annual business conferences held in exciting destinations • A comprehensive training and on-boarding process • A support for marketing, lead generation and ongoing customer service Inquiries: 604.276.0500 | Email: marketing.manager@kff.ca
