Running for those we love

Members of the community will have a chance to run for those they love or in memory of a loved one.

The annual Run with Heart charity run is back for its fourth year on Oct. 14th and is open to those of all ages.

“It started off as an in-house operation for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. It’s since gone to be a third party, 100 per cent volunteer run event by myself and two other individuals in the City,” said Karen Jackman, volunteer race director.

They will continue to fundraise for the Heart and Stroke Foundation, and this year have also offered it out to other charities within the community so they could introduce it to other groups and organizations, but also to help grow the event as well, giving back to other organizations in the community.

“This year, along with the Heart and Stroke Foundation, we will be supporting Vantage Community Services,” she said.

The run is a fun run, open to those of all abilities.

“We just really encourage families to get out there, to be active and live healthy lives, and do it as a family.”

Jackman said they encourage everyone to come out from eight months old to 80 years old.

“We do offer a 5 km run as well as a 10 km run.

Walkers are also welcome to join.”

She said they ask anybody over the age of 12 to register as a participant through the Running Room’s web site, however kids under 12 don’t need to register and can participate with a donation of any amount.

“They can register right up until the night before the run. We will also take registrations at the event on race day,” said Jackman.

The very first year of the run saw just over $10,000 raised, with $36,000 raised in total over the last three years.

She said what’s unique about this particular run is that it takes place at 7 p.m. so they add a glow aspect to the run.

“We ask everyone to come out in their funnest glow gear, whether it be glow in the dark bracelets or headbands. We’ve had everything from flashing tutus to bright socks. You name it, they’ve worn it,” she said, adding that they encourage everyone to have as much fun with that as possible, as they give prizes out for best dressed.

The run will start on the corner of 19th St. and Gaetz Avenue South, kitty corner to the south Second Cup. Participants will then take the Red Deer trail system through the Bower residential

area, behind and up to Bower Mall.

Although the run begins at 7 p.m. people are encouraged to come a few minutes early for the warm-up.

The 10 km runners will do the exact same route as the 5 km, but will repeat it.

Jackman said the run started off as a family event, but didn’t have as many young kids come out, but that’s since changed.

“We have kids as young as three and four-yearsold. My son is nine now and he’s ran it the last three years. We also have the kids that are high school and university aged, right up to moms and dads and grandmas and grandpas.”

She said everyone does the runs for their own reasons, whether it’s to come out and have fun with their friends or to support the causes they choose.

“They may be running in memory of somebody or in honour of a family member that’s either been affected by mental health issues, a heart attack, stroke or whatever it may be.”

Registration for the run is $50.

is prospering in Central Alberta

Basketball in Central Alberta continues to be a fast-growing sport.

“Basketball has grown by leaps and bounds,” said Ryan Doan, Red Deer Minor Basketball Association (RDMBA) President.

“When we formed Red Deer Minor Basketball in 2011, we had around 70 athletes on co-ed teams.”

They are now over 300 athletes from kindergarten to the end of high school.

Red Deer Minor Basketball is indicative of the considerable training that Central Alberta athletes are now receiving from the earliest ages.

“Skill-wise, we have a wide variety of kids,” she said. ”We have athletes that have never played basketball; obviously at the U5 level they are learning to move. Then we have levels all the way up to high school and our elite athletes that are being developed to play at the post-secondary level.

“We are looking to feed the ACAC and CIS levels.”

Each athlete in RDMBA is registered with the national Steve Nash Youth Basketball program, which is an, “Initiative designed to develop fundamental skills, sportsmanship and a love for the

game of basketball of players from U5 to U13,” according to the RDMBA web site.

“This grassroots program supports and empowers community-based recreational groups and facilities, schools and other institutions across Canada in an effort to positively influence youth through basketball.”

Doan added RDMBA coaches are certified to provide high-level basketball instruction.

“We have multiple coaches who are NCCP Certified,” he said.

“Our coaches range from the fundamentals ages—which is three to seven. We also have some trained at the learn-to-train level—the clinics are held all over Alberta and we host a clinic as well.

That covers athletes up to the age of 13.”

Doan sees the rising skill of athletes in Central Alberta as a sign that the area is growing as a basketball hot bed—something it was not viewed as in the past.

“There is definitely growth in the smaller league and at the high school level,” he said.

“Kids are coming in with a higher level of skill and more exposure to the game than ever before.

Hopefully we will start to gain that provincial recognition.

“On the girls’ side, we are starting to see the effects of the development with the amount of

players now playing post-secondary.”

Registration for the fall season is currently closed, however, spring sign-up will begin in December.

Seniors, kids and couples alike can dance their stresses away attending a Zumba class.

Zumba was started by fitness instructor Alberto ‘Beto’ Perez in Miami. He forgot his music one day, so decided to substitute in some Latin music he had with him. And so began the dance party.

“In 2001 they started training instructors all over the world to teach. It’s like a Latin-based dance party,” said Natalie Brooks, owner of Red Deer’s Chair Tease Dance.

Brooks, who’s been teaching Zumba for eight years now, said she had originally thought it would be one of those fitness fads, but it’s grown to be a staple in the fitness world.

Her studio is specific to those 18 plus, but Zumba as a whole is open to young and old of any fitness level.

“Zumba has every specialty. I also teach seniors Zumba at the Golden Circle and the Collicutt Centre. It’s a gentler form of Zumba without the squatting and twerking and that kind of stuff,” she said.

There’s even kids’ Zumba, aqua Zumba and Zumba with babies.

She said the benefit to Zumba is it’s very similar to that of a dance party.

“If you’ve had a bad day or you’ve had a stressful day you just come here, and the music’s so loud and we don’t count like traditional fitness classes, so I’m not talking to the class. It’s all music-driven.”

She will stand at the front of the room, while people mirror what she does.

There’s 16 songs in an hour and people can just dance between high and low intensities.

“We just mix all that together, so it’s like a big dance party, so you’re getting your strength and your balance and your coordination and your cardio.”

Depending on how hard you work, people can burn anywhere from 500 to 1,000 calories.

Depending on the specialty, in a regular Zumba class you’re going to do things like all the Latin rhythms, so things like Cha Cha, Salsa and Merengue. There is also Reggaeton and Hip Hop, which are more of the twerking, squats and lunges.

“It depends on the instructor. There’s all different styles of dance,” said Brooks.

For Brooks, it’s seeing the transformation of her clients.

“I’ve seen 100, 200 pound weight losses in my career. It’s just giving people a place and a fitness specialty to come to that they’re not judged and they can just be themselves and dance.”

She said you see such a transformation in people, especially seniors.

“For seniors we let them wear hip scarves, like the belly dance hip scarves, because their hips don’t move the same way, so any hip movement they do have is accentuated by the little jingles.”

Stepping foot in Brooks’ studio is a different story.

“We’re pretty hardcore Zumba here.

I’m known as an aggressive instructor, so you’re not going to leave my class without sweating,” she said, adding that it’s always going to be a fast-paced workout.

She said everybody does Zumba for a different reason. People with brain injuries, she said, are recommended to do Zumba for the dance component, along with learning your left and rights and your counting.

“It’s just a fun way to spend an hour.”

Brooks teaches about 15 classes a week between the Collicutt, Golden Circle and her own studio.

She said the people of Red Deer have been good to her, and that it’s been the seniors who have grown the most.

“Everyone was quite conservative when we first started. You’ve got to get used to moving your body that way without feeling awkward,” she said, adding that you eventually start to loosen up, have fun and realize no one’s judging you.

Women with breast cancer may find comfort in support groups No woman should have to face breast cancer alone. There are a number of resources available that can provide support, such as family members, friends, doctors, psychologists and even social workers. But sometimes it takes more than the comfort of familiar faces to help you with your feelings of isolation and helplessness. That’s why support groups are so comforting and beneficial; they allow you to connect with others who are going through — or have gone though — similar experiences and struggles.

From diagnosis to aftercare, breast cancer poses a number of different challenges for women. Each stage produces a variety of emotions that can be quite difficult to express and manage. If you have breast cancer, support groups can help you overcome these challenging moments by making you feel

heard and, more importantly, understood.

They can also help answer any questions you may have if the medical jargon becomes too overwhelming. You’ll be able to share experiences and concerns, as well as gain encouragement and support, which will be invaluable to you during the most trying of times.

Central Alberta woman using her story to support others Lisa Duke was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2016

July 1st, 2016 was a day that not only turned one Central Alberta woman’s life upside down, it was also a day that would impact her life forever for the better.

Lisa Duke, 35, a young mother of two children aged three and five at the time, discovered a lump in her left breast and went to the doctor the next day.

She was sent for a mammogram and was then pulled into another room for an ultrasound immediately after.

“The radiologist came in and said this isn’t normal - we need to do an emergency biopsy today,” said Duke.

“This all happened on a Tuesday and the results came back on a Friday - they were positive for cancer and they found more in my lymph nodes under my arms.”

She was diagnosed with Stage 2B cancer.

Duke then went to see a surgeon who said they did not have time to operate; chemotherapy had to start immediately as the cancer was not caught in the early stages.

“By August 4th I had my chemo started here in Red Deer.”

Since then, she has undergone a number of chemotherapy treatments - the most aggressive kind that could be done - all of which left horrendous side effects.

“Losing all my hair was one of the toughest - I always had long hair.

“When chemo started I got it cut short and then it was the second week in after my first treatment, it started falling out in chunks. My hairdresser came and shaved my head and my son shaved his head and my sister’s (Julie Windebank) kids shaved their heads,” said Duke.

“Other side effects were nausea, heart burn, no appetite, eventually losing eyebrows and eye lashes. The next treatments started and that came with extreme bone pain to the point where I couldn’t even walk some days. My finger nails and toenails started coming off.

“They said these are the side effects that you could experience and I experienced most

She also underwent 16 rounds of radiation and is still undergoing herceptin treatment. Still left is another surgery to remove her right breast as well as to have reconstruction done.

She added there is no history of breast cancer in the family.

“It’s a long journey for anyone that is going to go through it, but there is light at the end.”

All I could hear was him crying and saying, ‘I don’t want to do this today mommy.’ All of a sudden I had this, thank gosh it’s me and not my kids. It changed my whole perspective,” she said. “Thank gosh I heard that because it could have been a different road for me for sure.

stand when I say this, but it has been a positive thing in my life - as crazy as it is. Don’t get me wrong, it came with a lot of crap, but it has brought more positives than negatives in my life for sure.

Life is good until you have to fight for it. Once you have to fight to live, it’s different.”

Duke said the unwavering support from family and friends as well as the staff at the Central Alberta Cancer Centre helped get her through the fight of her life.

“I want to say how amazing the staff are at the (Central Alberta) Cancer Centre.

“They are some of the most amazing people that I have ever met. I’m so thankful for everything - start to finish in Red Deer - I can’t imagine having to travel to do that,” she said, adding seeing her friends and family rally was also a source of motivation.

“We all have friends and we all have family, but to see those people step up was amazing.

My freezer was full of meals and baking. When I started this I didn’t want my kids to be affected in that I didn’t want them to lose out on life.

Because of this experience they got to do more. People came and picked up my kids to take them to their activities. They got to go to concerts and to the corn maze.”

Duke’s sister Windebank was one of the many people supporting Duke along the way.

“I had no idea what it was like. I don’t know if I could have done it - Lisa is so strong,” said Windebank. “As a caregiver, don’t ask what you can do to help - just show up and do it. You might have 20 people helping you in the beginning, but only three helping you at the end. Be one of those three.”

Moving forward, Duke, who is now cancer-free, wants to be a motivation and support for other women.

“It’s a long journey for anyone that is going to go through it, but there is light at the end,” she said. “I was lucky to have the support, not everyone does.

My goal is to help those young moms who can’t cook for their kids. I would be there for anyone in a heart beat. I need to pay it forward.”

Healthy Family Living I have to confess, I am still a Survivor fan. You know that TV ‘reality’ show where they strand people and make them do crazy challenges and then vote each other off? Yup, that show.

I was hooked after the first one, and have only missed one or two seasons in 34. I like the show for a lot of reasons, but mostly the physical challenges. I could do without the manufactured drama, but I love to see people achieve things on their own merit and skill. One of my favourite seasons remains the Australian Outback, season two and one part in particular during episode three. It is a reward challenge for fishing gear and when you are starving, this is a big deal. The two tribes have to choose a person to stand on a platform with a pole across their back at the shoulders and neck – like where you place a barbell when you squat. The teams then run across a balance beam with a pole of their own carrying fabric ‘buckets’ of water that they filled. Once at the platform a team mate takes the water buckets and places them on the pole of the opposite tribe’s water carrier. The goal is to get all the full water buckets on the opposing teams bucket carrier as soon as possible so they collapse or quit. In this case, the teams filled all of the water buckets and got them on the shoulder poles of the two guys standing on the platforms. It became a battle of wills. Who will quit first? Each guy, Colby and Mike, had around 40 buckets totaling over 400 lbs on their back, standing in the hot Australian sun, with no food for over a week, to serve their screaming muscles.

For 16 years this image has been burned in my mind as the most powerful lesson.

A crushing weight on your shoulders and nothing to do about it but hang on. A massive problem that cannot be solved, that’s trying to squash your will to fight.

www.reddeerexpress.com This happens in real life so many times, over and over again. I have been known to say that it isn’t the fact that life gives you a problem, it’s that it gives you a dozen. It’s easy to say that problems are a gift with a lesson to teach, in fact, I wrote an article about that very thing not too long ago. When your problems are few, or light, it’s really easy to say that sort of stuff, but what about when they are really massive problems, and lots of them?

I could try and speak to other people’s problems but I know mine the best, and am free to speak about them as an example. January 2016 I had just survived a near death crash. I had metal parts holding my arm and shoulder together, metal staples in my skull and could only stay awake for about 90 minutes at a stretch before I had to sleep for four to six hours. Alberta was in the worst recession anyone could remember. We had launched a brand new boot camp program that I was supposed to be leading. I was living in a small rental condo, having sold our house at a loss to chase the dream of building a new one after finding a super deal on land.

We hadn’t unpacked anything before my crash, so the condo was loaded with boxes and chaos, while I was barely able to move. My son was not yet four and didn’t understand why daddy couldn’t play with him. He was great at helping put my socks on though. There was more, but I think you get it - it wasn’t one problem, it was 30, just like the buckets those guys had on their back.

So what do you do? You grit your teeth and hang on, that’s what.

Last month I finished my seventh

Ironman triathlon. After five surgeries, chronic lung infections, hundreds of physio appointments to get my shoulder moving again and only seven weeks after knee surgery. I am 20 lbs heavier than normal, completely under trained and not in the shape I am used to being in when I race, but none of that matters.

I refused to quit and then something magic happened, just like in that Survivor episode I was talking about.

Colby and Mike were in a standoff, loaded with ‘problems’. Legs shaking, backs aching, and in absolute hell. Colby screamed out in pain and resolve. Michael was alternating between a mouth open silent cry and gritting his teeth and the weight bore down on each of them. Their teammates screamed encouragements at them as they stood there in agony. Michael started to bow forward as the weight became too much and then with a scream rallied to stand back up again, and it happened. The wooden bar snapped! Michael stood up and all the ‘problems’ fell into the water surrounding the platform.

That is the image I hold to - my problems failing before I do. Standing up as the bar snaps and all the problems fail in their effort to crush me.

As I crossed the finish line last month, I felt all the problems I have been carrying fall away and a new freedom surround me. I wish this for you. The ability to stand strong, never surrender, and let your problems give up and break.

Human bodies are made to move. All it takes are a few minutes of physical activity every day to stay in shape and reduce the risk of illness.

At work, we can take “stretching” breaks during meetings or, if it’s appropriate, suggest a “walking” meeting to your work colleagues so you can get some fresh air and exercise while discussing business.

And there’s no need to wait until the elevator is out of order before using the stairs. Other

people can be encouraged to exercise by placing a notice at the bottom of the stairs suggesting they walk up rather than using the elevator.

We could also profit from replacing the coffee break with a walking break and by contracting abdominal and back muscles when working at a computer.

What’s more, why not make physical activity one of the objectives of your work team?

Getting to work on foot or by bicycle is another great way of

staying in shape while economizing on gas consumption and giving a helping hand to the environment.

You have to take the bus or the car because of the distance involved? You could always get off two stops before your destination or park the car a ten minute walk away from the office.

Taekwondo promotes physical, mental and emotional health

Taekwondo is a great activity where families can compete and have fun together.

“We have a motto here - ‘Families that kick together—stick together’,” Champion Taekwondo Owner and Operator Ben Couturier said.

The sport, which is a Korean Martial Art, is a kicking sport which differs from the more well-known karate in that it relies on dynamic kicks including spin kicks and jump kicks.

“It originated in Korea and then we had masters who relocated to Canada,” Couturier said. “For myself, it originated from my grand-master who is located in Edmonton.

“In the early 80s, he came over and started teaching after opening a school. That main school branched off after he had a number of black belts go through the ranks.

They started satellite schools and now there is quite a few Champion Taekwondo schools.

“Our lineage comes from that one individual and that is Grand-master Park from Edmonton.”

The health benefits of Taekwondo, according to Couturier, are plentiful.

“Taekwondo is good for anyone from the ages of four to 94,” he said. “It is good for conditioning and is great for flexibility, which is good because as we age that gets

Couturier added the health benefits of Taekwondo are also emotional and mental.

“It is great for stress relief and it is great for self-confidence,” he said.

“We do a lot of self-defence training here. People feel more comfortable with themselves and can get themselves out of situations that could turn bad.

“What we always teach is that it is not how you can fight: it is more how you can use your mind to get yourself out of situations and to be calm.”

Families sharing the experience of Taekwondo is something that is important to Couturier and Champion Taekwondo.

“We offer two different kids classes, which range from age four- to nine-years-old,” he said. “Once they graduate to the all-belts class—I try to convince the parents to do it together with them and I try to plant the seed that it is a great sport you can do together.”

Couturier added it is important that his students add to their community.

“That is what we try to do is have a positive influence,” he said. “That is one of the main benefits we can offer for the people that come to our school.

“It is about getting people to understand it is not just about themselves—it is the people around you and how you interact with them.”

What is the ideal sport for your child?

Would you like to encourage your children to develop their talents by playing sports? It’s a great initiative, but before going any further, it’s a good idea to consider a few factors that could influence the outcome.

Think about their interests

Were you a formidable hockey player in your youth and dream of seeing your son follow in your footsteps? Before you enrol him on a team, take the time to find out what interests him. You may get some surprising or even disappointing answers; stay calm and listen to what he’s saying to you.

Remember that children who aren’t interested in a sport won’t gain any benefit from it and it could even make them unhappy, frustrated or angry. Suggest a sport that makes your children’s eyes shine with happiness every week, because

you want them to be happy more than anything else in the world, right?

If your children say that nothing interests them — which can happen — why not get them to try out some free introductory classes, or go to different practices with them. Who knows, they may find something that interests them faster than you think.

Schedule and budget

Obviously, some sports require investments of time and money; sometimes the expenses can be quite substantial. If you have a tight schedule, don’t enrol your children on a team that travels long distances to tournaments on a regular basis. And if you don’t have much money to spare for this type of activity, focus on sports offered by your children’s school or by community organizations.

Golden Circle a rich resource of

healthy, fun senior activities

There are plenty of programs and activities at the Golden Circle to help keep seniors engaged, healthy and active.

“New this fall, we have the Stretch, Strength and Balance program,” said Monica Morrison, executive director of the Golden Circle. “We were just looking at starting one class with 30 people - but we ended up doing two classes with 30 people in them and there are wait lists.

People are understanding the importance of remaining physically active for healthy aging,” she explained.

“If you can’t move well, you aren’t going to be able to engage in much. You won’t be able to play with your grandchildren, enjoy holidays, those kinds of things. And our yoga classes - all six of them are full, too. Again, it’s all about physical activity and staying active.”

Along with exercise classes, there are also support groups for a variety of issues that lend to a healthier perspective.

“One of our members came to us and had just been diagnosed within the last year or so with kidney disease,” she said. “But there was nothing in the community for people to get together to talk about it. So she came to us and said, ‘You know what, wouldn’t it be great if we could have a support group for people like me to get together and talk about how we can age gracefully, and survive and cope with kidney disease?”

So a group was launched, and Morrison said she also got in touch with the Kidney Foundation out of Edmonton for further direction and support.

Another new program offered is a support group for both those dealing directly with Asperger Syndrome, and those who have loved ones or friends who are dealing with it.

“We had an introductory discussion in June for parents and grandparents of children and adult children with Aspergers. It was so well attended, the request was that we actually form a support group.”

The first meeting was held just last month.

“Both adults with Aspergers and high functioning autism met, along with parents, grandparents and caregivers. Then it’s going to split off - people with Aspergers will meet on the first Thursday of the month and the parents/grandparents support group will meet the third Thursday.”

Ultimately, no matter whether it’s a fun activity, a learning session of some type or a helpful support group, one of the underlying goals is simply to bring people together.

“Everybody ages, so if we can get supports in place and get people socially connected at at younger age, people will age well. It’s all about social circles. There is so much research out there talking about the importance of being socially connected,” she said.

Another means of doing just that at the Golden Circle is via the Community Dining program which continues to grow.

“It’s really growing and we have the partnership with Piper Creek which is going well, and we have the site here at the Golden Circle which brings people in from the community. And we’ve just connected with the City of Red Deer and they are going to allow us to open up a site at the Collicutt Centre.

“So it’s primarily to get seniors out of their homes

and to come together for some activity and a meal. Going into the Collicutt Centre is great too because they and the City of Red Deer can share with the seniors what they have to offer when it comes to programming.”

Volunteers will deliver the meals from the Golden Circle to the Collicutt Centre for those times.

“They can build those community connections.

I’ve seen it with community dining programs, where people come together, become friends, exchange phone numbers and call each other.

And then, if somebody doesn’t come one week, it’s like - ‘Where is Mary?’

“It’s that whole ability to connect and bond.”

Another thing staff and volunteers at the Golden Circle encourage is that seniors keep learning, seeking and trying new things.

“One of the things around healthy aging is always going out and seeking new adventures,” she said. “Make that bucket list of things that you always thought oh, I can’t try that! But now that you are elderly, you can blame it on old age,” she added with a laugh.

“Just go for it!”

‘germiest places’

Germs are everywhere - in the air, on every surface, in your food and even in your body. Bacteria, fungi, viruses and protozoa are all germs that you interact with on a daily basis. These microorganisms can cause illness and infection, but thankfully, the immune system is designed to protect against most infectious carriers.

Even in the cleanest of homes, you may be surprised where germs can congregate.

Keeping your home free from germs is virtually impossible, but you can help prevent germs from spreading and multiplying with regular cleaning and proper hygiene.

Source 1: Cutting boards

You use a cutting board to chop up raw meat, fish and poultry for one meal and the next meal you use the same board to slice and dice fruits and vegetables. If the cutting board isn’t cleaned adequately between uses, germs from the meat may still be lurking in the small crevices that could contaminate your food and cause food-borne illness.

Be smart and use two separate cutting boards - one for meat and one for produce. After using the boards, wash them with hot, soapy water or place them in the dishwasher.

Read the user manual to learn the best way to clean your coffee maker. A common way is to pour vinegar into the reservoir, let it sit half an hour and then run it through. Rinse out the vinegar by brewing several pots of clean water. Do this once a month and you’ll keep bacteria at bay.

You may think the toilet or faucet handles are the germiest places in a bathroom, but it’s actually the toothbrush holder. Water often collects in the bottom of the holder and the spray from the nearby flushing toilet combine to make a germy place.

If your toothbrush holder is dishwasher safe, run it through once a week or wash it with hot, soapy water.

Because more than likely, you’re actually spreading germs rather than removing them when you use your kitchen sponge.

Wash your sink with disinfectant cleaner once a week, run the sink strainers in the dishwasher, zap your wet sponge in the microwave for two minutes once a day, or throw your dishcloths in the washing machine on the hot cycle every two days.

Think your toilet seat is gross? Research has shown that your computer keyboard likely has more germs than your toilet seat.

So before you click on another link or type in another word, do your due diligence and disinfect your computer keyboard for your good health.
