THE “JUNCTION” IN MISSION
Always something to do at seniors centre As local seniors anxiously wait for a decision to be made by Mission council regarding a new facility, activities at the current seniors centre continue. The Mission Seniors Activity Centre, located at 33100 10th Ave., provides people age 50 and up with educational, recreational and social programs. The centre is also a place to socialize and share experiences. Seniors are welcome to stop by any weekday to see what the centre is all about. “I’ve been volunteering here since the place opened,” said Rosina Swyck, who is also a member of the board of the seniors society. Volunteers are key to making the centre a success and Swyck said she enjoys lending a helping hand. “It gives me something to do. I don’t have any family here. I like to volunteer. I come and make the coffee, get the cookies out. It’s a good, positive thing to do.” It also offers some health benefits. “You interact with other people and my doctor told me the best way to prevent Alzheimer’s is to socialize,” added Swyck. While she helps out two days a week, Swyck said the centre needs more people to
lend a hand. “There aren’t a lot of volunteers.” She said anyone who wants to volunteer, or just come in to chat or work on a jigsaw puzzle, can just show up and take a look around. The centre offers many scheduled activities, including bingo, crib, line dancing, bridge, health and wellness seminars, and more. There are also chair exercise classes led by staff from the Mission Leisure Centre and a makeshift library, where seniors can drop off and pick up books to read. “Every day there is a lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., an inexpensive lunch that is made here. You just come in, order it and it is brought to you,” said Swyck. And coffee and tea are always available. Swyck said the centre is open to any new ideas or suggestions for other activities. “Once we get a new centre, we’ll have more room to offer more stuff to do.” While they have been waiting for years for a new activity centre to be approved, she said hopes are high that good news is ahead. “We’re starting to believe now that it could happen in our lifetime. It’s getting closer.” Until then, she’s going to continue to volunteer and socialize. 8300282

Grapefruits…did you know? Grapefruit is 92% water! Grapefruit, particularly red grapefruit, help lower your LDL cholesterol and are an excellent source of fibre, especially if you consume the white fleshy part of the fruit. Adding a grapefruit a day may lower artery clogging triglycerides and your risk of a heart attack. Also aiding in lower insulin levels resulting in weight loss. High in Vitamin C and A, this fruit is a huge immune system booster. It may not prevent a cold but it can reduce the duration and symptoms. They have also been beneficial in healing wounds and controlling blood sugar. The potassium in this fruit has shown signs of neutralizing the negative effects of sodium and drop your blood pressure. The fruit has also been associated with inflammatory conditions.

The different varieties in color all offer vitamins and mineral but the pink or red ones come with a little extra punch! Meaning higher levels of antioxidants, which play a role in preventing certain diseases and cancer.
It is a good idea to check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding this beneficial fruit to your daily diet as it interacts with certain drugs. Mainly blood pressure, allergy medication, heart or anti-anxiety drugs. How to select a good grapefruit? It doesn’t have to be perfect looking but any signs of decay over the soft spot could mean less flavor. They should be heavy for their size, firm and at room temperature should have a subtly sweet smell.

Grapefruit is best by fruit rather than juice and at room temperature but 1/2 to 1 liter of the grapefruit juice can significantly lower the risk of forming kidney stones and protect against lung and colon cancer.

September is Healthy Aging Month! Here are some simple ways to protect your joints and prevent pain
Easy ways to stay fit all year long Joining an exercise group is one way men and women can stay motivated and maintain healthy weights year-round. Many people find it easier to maintain their beach bodies during summer than they do throughout the rest of the year. Summer weather encourages people to get off the couch and enjoy the great outdoors, and many people prefer to eat lighter meals during the summer to combat the heat and humidity. But once the dog days of summer give way to autumn, the motivation to stay in shape tends to wane. Couple that dwindling motivation with the tendency to eat larger, heartier meals as the weather gets colder, and it’s easy to see why so many people gain weight over the last several months of the year and into the new year. But maintaining a healthy weight year-round promotes longterm health and reduces a person’s risk for various ailments and diseases, including heart disease and diabetes.
Find healthy seasonal foods. Many people prefer to buy locally sourced and/or in-season foods, recognizing the positive impact that such dietary habits can have on the environment. That commitment to buying healthy, locally grown foods can be tested as the seasons change and the offerings at your local market change along with them. Educate yourself about which foods are in-season in your area throughout the year, opting for the most nutritious foods you can find. Buying in-season foods saves you money, and you will also feel good about staying on a nutritious, eco-friendly track. As summer turns to autumn, join a club to motivate you. When harsh weather makes fitness outdoors too difficult, sign up for an indoor fitness club, swimming or indoor bowls. Such groups and clubs get you off the couch and provide great opportunities to meet like-minded men and women who have made their own commitments to staying fit.
your feet, try to find a greater balance between the two. Joints can grow stiff from sitting all day, while standing throughout your work day can stress the joints. Take a short break every 30 minutes to stand up and walk around if you spend most of your day at a desk. If you stand a lot at your job, stop to sit down for a few minutes once every half hour. Joint pain and aging do not have to go hand in hand. high in calcium and can reduce age-related bone loss while also slowing cartilage destruction. • Shed those extra pounds. If you start including more healthy vegetables in your diet, you might just start to lose a little weight as well. Such weight loss also can help your joints, as the AF notes that every extra pound a person gains puts four times the stress on his or her knees. The AF also notes that research has shown that losing as little as 11 pounds can reduce a person’s risk of osteoarthritis of the knee by 50 percent. • Hit the pool. Swimming is a great fullbody workout and can be especially helpful to the joints. The buoyancy of water supports the body’s weight, reducing stress on the joints and minimizing pain as a result. If possible, swimmers already experiencing pain should swim in heated pools, which can help relieve pain. While you can still benefit from swimming in pools with colder temperatures, cold water may not soothe the joints like warm water can. • Take breaks at work. Many people develop joint pain thanks to their jobs. If you spend all day sitting at a desk or standing on

Swimming is a great workout that can alleviate pain and reduce stress on the joints. Joints play vital roles in the human body, forming the connections between bones and facilitating movement. Damage to the joints can be especially painful, and that damage may result from conditions such as osteoarthritis or gout. While not all joint pain is debilitating, the discomfort of joint pain is such that it’s wise for adults to take steps to protect their joints with the hope of preventing joint pain down the road. • Forgo fashion with regard to footwear. When women choose their footwear, fashion should not be their top priority. According to the Arthritis Foundation, three-inch heels stress the feet seven times more than one-inch heels and heels put additional stress on knees, possibly increasing women’s risk for osteoarthritis. Though heels may be fashionable, the risk of developing joint pain is not worth making the fashion statement. • Get some green in your diet. A healthy diet pays numerous dividends, but many may not know that a healthy diet can help prevent joint pain. Green vegetables such as spinach, broccoli, kale and parsley are
