The dawn of a new school year is an exciting time. Kids may not want to say goodbye to days spent lounging by the pool, but such disappointment is often tempered by the prospect of returning to school with friends.

For parents, getting kids ready for a new school year is about more than updating their wardrobe or organizing carpools with fellow parents. Re-acclimating kids to the routine of school after a relaxing summer is a significant undertaking, and the following are a handful of ways for parents to get a head start as the school year draws closer. • Establish a routine over the last few weeks of summer. Summer vacations typically lack the structure of the school year, and that lack of structure can help kids unwind and make the

• Encourage kids to sign up for extracurricular activities. Many schoolaged athletes get a head start on the new school year by trying out for sports teams. Such tryouts often commence a week or two before a school year is scheduled to begin, and this can help kids ease their way back into the school year. But even non-athletes can begin pursuing extracurricular activities before the first school bell of the year rings. Theater programs may begin auditions or encourage interested youngsters to attend orientation meetings before the dawn of the school year, and such sessions can be a great and pressure-free way for kids to ready themselves for a new school year. The arrival of a new school year can be both exciting and daunting. But parents can help their youngsters readjust to school in various ways after a relaxing summer.

MONTE CREEK RANCH KAMLOOPS, BC ON THE NOSE:

This classic Riesling beauty entices with a brilliant colour and aromas of peach, lime zest, and honeysuckle.

ON THE PALATE NATIONAL PORK BOARD

Thai Pork Burritos

DIRECTIONS: 1. Heat large nonstick skillet over high heat. Add pork, cook, crumble and stir until pork is no longer pink, about 3-4 minutes.

This is an easy, innovative and tasty way to use inexpensive ground pork. I have also used this filling and wrapped it into lettuce leaves for an even healthier dish. INGREDIENTS: 1 pound Lepp Farm-rasied ground pork 2 tbsp ginger, grated 1 clove garlic, crushed 1 small onion, thinly sliced 2 cups coleslaw mix with carrots 1 tsp olive oil 3 tbsp soy sauce 2 tbsp lime juice 1 tbsp honey 2 tsp ground coriander 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes, crushed 4 10-inch flour tortillas, warmed fresh cilantro, chopped

Add Some Sauce: If you want to get fancy, you can make a sauce to drizzle over the lettuce wraps as follows:

2. Add ginger, garlic, onion and coleslaw mix and stir-fry with pork for 2 minutes, until vegetables are wilted. Stir constantly to blend all ingredients well, about 1 minute.

1/2 cup water 1/4 cup sugar

3. Combine all remaining ingredients except tortillas and cilantro in a small bowl and add to skillet. Cook and stir until all is coated, about a minute.

2 tbsp soy sauce 2 tbsp rice vinegar 2 tbsp ketchup 1/2 to 1 tsp sambel oelek (a ground fresh chili paste, optional – makes for a hotter sauce)

The Farmer and the Foodie We often get asked how our business began, and the simple answer is hog farming. Rob’s father, always a farmer at heart, began the hog operation in the 1970s and Rob’s high school graduation was the start of his farming career. While always proud to be a BC Pork producer, the dream of bringing our farmed products directly to the public began as we saw the desire for local food increase, and the idea for Lepp Farm Market was born. The pork we feature at Lepp Farm Market is from pigs raised on Lepp Farms in the barns directly behind the market. The animals enjoy spacious pens, an all-vegetable diet, are not given routinely administered antibiotics and as all pork raised in Canada —

there’s no administration of growth hormones. These days, there are 15 pork producers in our province, who are only able to supply about 10% of BC’s pork needs. All BC producers, including Lepp Farms, must adhere to strict biosecurity measures and are inspected annually to ensure we comply with the Canadian Quality Assurance Program. So wherever you shop, be sure to look for the BC Pork logo and support the dedicated BC farmers who are committed to bringing you the best and highest quality product they can produce. This month’s recipe features ground pork, and this quick-to-prepare dish makes a nutritious, economical and delicious meal your whole family will love.

BENTLEY PAYLESS SHOESOURCE

Head back to school in style with cool casual looks that make the grade. There’s still some time before the crisp days of autumn set in, so think about adding some transition pieces to your wardrobe. A cute off-the-shoulder blouse works well with a pair jeans or a romantic floral skirt. When the cooler days approach, add a layering piece on top. Skinny jeans – how about in a camo pattern? – are on point when paired with a pair of ballet flats or sandals. Later, swap the hotweather footwear for a pair of on-trend suede booties. Skinny jeans are still a popular look for the guys, especially when paired with a tailored jacket – navy is a versatile choice – and a great pair of sneakers.

The benefits of a healthy diet are clear and well documented. In addition to providing the nutrients a growing body needs, consuming a balanced diet helps children maintain a healthy weight. Obesity continues to be a growing problem among school-aged children and can contribute to the onset of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol, and many other adverse medical conditions. Children attending school will eat at least one meal away from home each day. A healthy lunch provides sound nutrition to give students energy to do well in school and for the rest

Whether students purchase lunch from school or bring lunch from home, there are ways to guarantee a more diverse offering and better nutrition. Here are some guidelines to follow. • Foods should contribute to the daily recommended amounts of protein, iron, calcium, vitamin A, and vitamin C. Provide a selection of foods, such as lean protein, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables.

• Switch from white bread to whole grain breads and opt for low-fat dairy products instead of full-fat dairy products. Many favourite foods, such as chicken nuggets, pizza and macaroni and cheese, can be made with healthier ingredients. • Giving children a healthy lunch and then packing a sugar-filled, high-calorie drink negates your efforts. Water is always the best option for a healthy drink. Low-fat milk and real fruit juice consumed in moderation also make healthy alternatives to sugary beverages.

Building a Strong Parent-Teacher Relationship Once a school year begins, many students spend more time in the classroom with their teachers than they do at home with their parents. Though many parents would love to spend more time with their children, doing so can be difficult when parents must go to work every day. Because kids spend so much time with their teachers, it’s important for parents to work toward building a strong parent-teacher relationship. Such a relationship fosters communication, which can help a young student do his or her best in and out of the classroom, something that’s a goal for parents and teachers alike. Parents interested in developing a strong relationship with their kids’ teachers can take several steps to make that happen. • Meet your child’s teacher at the beginning of the year. Introduce yourself at the onset of the school year, providing phone numbers and e-mail addresses where you can be reached. Let the teacher know you’re available for discussion any time during the school year. • Attend “Back to School Night.” School events like an open house

providers in your community.

or a “Back to School Night” are a great way to help kids grow acclimated to their school. But such events also make great opportunities for parents to learn more about their kids’ teachers than they might have learned during their introductory meeting. Such events may allow teachers to explain the curriculum for the upcoming year, and teachers may feel encouraged when parents show an active interest in such events. • Prioritize parent-teacher conferences. Parent-teacher conferences are a great opportunity for parents to speak to their children’s teacher one-on-one. Unlike an introductory meeting or an open house at the beginning of the school year, a parent-teacher conference allows parents and teachers to specifically discuss students in private. Teachers may provide insight into how a child is performing and behaving in the classroom, offering advice as to how to improve that performance or suggestions as to how to encourage kids to keep up the good

work. Such conferences may be your only opportunity for a oneon-one, in-person discussion about your child, so make sure you’re on time and that you don’t miss these conferences. • Keep the channels of communication open. If it’s been awhile since you’ve spoken to your child’s teacher, don’t be afraid to e-mail the teacher to check in or see if you can lend a helping hand. In addition, if your child really enjoys a teacher’s class, don’t be hesitant to share that with the teacher.
