President’s welcome
Welcome to the 123rd anniversary of the Vancouver Island Exhibition. On behalf of the board of directors, volunteers, members and sponsors that make this an exciting and successful event, we would like to invite you to join us to experience Nanaimo’s event of the year. Join us this year in our new entertainment hub on the Beban Park soccer field. This will include the main stage, Ribfest, two beer gardens, pro-
fessional wrestling and games. This year’s theme is ‘There is Magic in the Fair.’ No matter how large the exhibition may become, we will never forget our primary purpose is to bring the entire community together to present and encourage awareness of the agricultural world that surrounds us and to demonstrate how it affects our everyday lives. As you explore our grounds, you will be delighted by the variety of livestock displays, including cattle, horses, goats, rabbits, chickens as well as the many entertainment venues we offer. Our main feature is the Strathcona Mounted Troop Musical Ride, a 24-horse equestrian display preserving Canadian cavalry heritage from Edmonton.
Come and enjoy our first annual Ribfest. This is featuring four 40-foot rib trucks delivering mouth-watering ribs, chicken and pulled pork. Come and eat their amazing food and vote for your People’s Choice winner for the best ribs. Watch our friends from the Mid-Island Tractor Club as they display their old-time farm equipment and tools and provide demonstrations. The Pure Wrestling Association will be teaming up with Vancouver Island Pro Wrestling to bring live professional wrestling back to the VIEX.Come and see the Canadian Horse Classic featuring 10 of the top classified horses in all of Canada on Saturday only. Also, come and see the Canada 150

display. We have transformed a barn into a Step Back in Time display. Bring your kids to the McDonald’s Kids Zone, where they can bounce on bouncy castles, get their face painted, make some beautiful arts and crafts and learn what it is like to be a farmer for a day. If you find yourself in need of a rest, you can find the many food vendors on site in our food court set up outside the Home Arts Show located in the Centennial Building. This year we welcome back the Notorious RC Club. They will be putting on demonstrations all three days. Spend a few hours at the hair-raising midway brought to you by Shooting Star Amusements. All day Friday, enjoy rock music with La Familia and Herbicidal Maniacs. Friday we have the privilege of having Led Zepagain and Lawn Social. There is also other local entertainment all-day long on the Thrifty Foods Community Festival Stage. I would like to thank everyone who has helped to make this event happen this year, as well as the part 123 years! If it wasn’t for you, the VIEX wouldn’t be what it is today. See y’all on Aug. 18! Minister’s message Welcome to the 123rd Vancouver Island Exhibition! In 2017, as we mark Canada 150, we have a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our rich history and heritage, to appreciate the road we have travelled so far, and to look to our future with optimism. During this milestone year, the Vancouver Island Exhibition will once again highlight the agricultural heritage of this beautiful part of our country. Our government is pleased to support this annual
event, which gives Canadians the chance to celebrate their traditions and take part in activities rooted in local history. As minister of Canadian heritage, I would like to thank the organizers, artists and volunteers who made this year’s exhibition possible. Thank you for letting Vancouver Island’s residents and visitors discover that ‘There is Magic in the Fair.’ The Honourable Mélanie Joly Minister of Heritage

Odds sure to be fair favourites The Odds were born out of the 1987 Vancouver music scene and made their mark with the Zoo/ BMG album Neopolitan in 1991. Warren Zevon ended up with a copy and recognized a kindred spirit – taking the Odds on the road as his opening act and backing band. Black humourists, Stax fans and power-pop purveyors, the Odds released three more critically acclaimed albums – Bedbugs, Good Weird Feeling and Nest before taking a nine-year hiatus.
Their albums had broken through and achieved platinum status in their native Canada, along with six Juno nominations, several top 10s, and a few top 40 hits in the U.S.A. and around the world. Songs you may recognize include: It Falls Apart, Eat My Brain, Make You Mad, Heterosexual Man, and Someone Who’s Cool. The band returned in 2008 with Cheerleader, featuring the single My Happy Place (as heard in the outro for the hit show Corner Gas).

Led Zepagain gets it just right with tribute act Led Zepagain is an American hard rock tribute band formed in Ventura, Calif. in 1988. The current band consists of Swan Montgomery, Anthony David, Jim Wootten and Derek Smith. Having formed in 1988, Sony recording artists Led Zepagain have become highly regarded as the most accurate and authentic replication of Led Zeppelin in the world today. Led Zepagain was honoured to have been featured on AXS TV’s World’s Greatest Tribute Bands in 2014, and were asked to come back for an encore performance in March of 2017 to perform the iconic Led Zeppelin lV album in its entirety.
Canadian country trio Doc Walker is Saturday’s headliner. The band has churned out more than 20 top 10 country hits since 1997, won the 2007 Canadian Country Music Awards Album of the Year and will no doubt be playing selections from its newest album Weathervane, released in March. Past hits include I am Ready and The Show is Free.

Old tractors aren’t slowing down The Mid-Island Vintage Tractor and Equipment Club is a group whose members share a love of tractors and equipment and often take up the challenge of reviving engines that long ago lost their hum. Club members can be found doing threshing demonstrations at the Vancouver Island Exhibition or driving their machines in community parades, but they also get together to tinker, have fun and enjoy a ‘cuppa joe.’ The Mid-Island Vintage Tractor and Equipment Club is always a favourite at the Vancouver Island Exhibition. This year the club will have a vintage tractor display, vintage tractor games and parades, vintage machinery demonstrations and threshing demonstrations.

Pro wrestlers vie for trophy Every pro wrestler at the fair wants to end up King of the Ex. The annual tournament will highlight three days of professional wrestling at the VIEX featuring the stars of the Pure Wrestling Association and Vancouver Island Pro Wrestling. The sport has been part of the fair for four straight years, but things will be a little different this years as instead of one longer event each day, there will be two shorter events each day. This will allow everyone to enjoy wrestling, the other live entertainment the great food and rides. This will be the fourth
time PWA crowns a King of the Ex. There will be two mini roundrobin tournaments with the winners of each bracket facing off to see who will hoist the trophy high. Some of the stars in action include Pure Wrestling champion Eddie Osbourne, VIPW champion Cremator Von Slasher, B.C. Champion Haviko, PWA Pure Violence champion and Nanaimo’s own Scott Steel, plus Krofton, Nolan James, Judas Icarus, Riea Von Slasher, Nathan Legacy and others.
