URBA’s annual car show will once again take place August 13, giving owners and enthusiasts an opportunity to see the best in classic cars, trucks, motorcycles, tractors, and boats.

The Uptown Rutland Business Association’s sixth annual Cruisin’ The Park car, truck, and bike show returns to Rutland August 13, when classic car owners from all across British Columbia will descend on Lion’s Park to show off their classic rides and talk shop with other enthusiasts.

co-sponsored by Kal Tire, Century 21, Plaza 33, and others, will feature classic cars, trucks, and motorcycles of all stripes. Penticton’s own classic rock band 13 Broken Bones will provide live entertainment, playing covers of yesterday’s hits by major names like The Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac, and Chuck Berry.

URBA Executive Director Laurel D’Andrea says that the car show is just one of the many ways that URBA is working to foster community engagement in Rutland.

D’Andrea says that one lucky attendee will walk away with a brand new motorcycle courtesy of the Kelowna & District Safety Council.

“URBA is very active in hosting events in this area.

We recently hosted a business expo, where we invited businesses to come together and let Rutland citizens do a lot of one-stop shopping in the area. It’s our hope that car show attendees will also support the local shops.”

After the car show, URBA’s event priorities will include beautification of Highway 33. The association plans to perform street cleanups for local Rutland businesses that may not have a budget for regular landscaping. Following the street cleanup will be the Uptown Rutland Scarecrow Festival in October, where 150 local businesses will put forward scarecrows for judging.

D’Andrea says that the free event is expected to draw between 150 and 200 classic vehicles this year. The show,

“We encourage members to place the scarecrows in their place of business prior to the event, and then drop off the scarecrow to be judged. It’s a really fun project – we’ve had some very creative submissions.”

D’Andrea also notes that URBA is actively working to increase the profiles of local Rutland businesses through innovative social media campaigns. The association’s summer students are actively interviewing Rutland business owners, and plan to feature stories on local businesses on the URBA Facebook page.

The car show will take place at Lion’s Park on August 13 from 11 AM to 3 PM. General admission is free to the public. Exhibitors can show their cars for a price of $10 per vehicle. Lunch is provided free of charge for exhibitors.

Exhibitor registration is open as of press time, and exhibitors can register through the Our Rutland website.

HIGH SCHOOLERS TEACHING A LOVE OF READING RSS students giving back for South Rutland Elementary

South Rutland Elementary got more involved with reading this past school year, thanks to some help from Rutland Senior Secondary students.

The Grade 12 students held a dance and karaoke night fundraiser for new books for the elementary’s library.

The proceeds will go towards purchasing

books by Adrienne Gear and expanding on the new requirement set by the provincial government to have more First Nations content in classrooms, said South Rutland principal Mike Watson, who used to be the vice-principal of RSS. Altogether, $600 was raised for new books.

The high school students visited the elementary school Friday, June 23 and read stories to kindergarten and Grade 1 students.

Grade 12 student Kiran Jacob is a South Rutland Elementary alumni and said he was looking forward to reading one day the to the younger kids.

He remembers looking up to the Kelowna Rockets when he was young and wants to carry on the feeling of mentorship.

“I think it’s important to give back to the elementary schools because one day the students will look back and say ‘older kids did that for us…’ maybe it’ll pass (mentoring) along,” said Grade 12 student Kara Savage.

The fundraiser was part of a grad legacy service project. Those on the grad legacy council created the idea to get a more personal experience with helping the community.

RUTLAND GRUB CRAWL RETURNS

FOR SECOND YEAR THIS SEPTEMBER Local foodies, rejoice – Grub Crawl is back. Strap on your best bib and prepare for a uniquely Rutland-flavoured food festival courtesy of the Uptown Rutland Business Association.

The Uptown Rutland Business Association’s second annual Grub Crawl is this fall, and local restaurants are already planning ahead for the food event of the season.

URBA Executive Director Laurel D’Andrea says that the Grub Crawl is a great opportunity for locals to try new restaurants, and that a strong turnout in 2016 is what prompted URBA to host the event a second time.

“Last year was a great success,” D’Andrea says.

“We sold 145 tickets. We’re capping the event at 200 tickets this year. We want people who haven’t tried the restaurants in Rutland to see what we have to offer.”

Grub Crawl 2016 featured a variety of tasty dishes from some of Rutland’s best restaurants, including Olympia Taverna, the Wok Inn, Dosa Crepe Café, and Memphis Blues Barbecue House. All of the food provided during Grub Crawl is generously donated, and proceeds from ticket sales fund prizes that are given away to attendees via draws and social media contests.

D’Andrea notes that managing crowds at the Grub Crawl can seem like a challenge, which is why URBA and Telus are making it easy for participating restaurants to serve patrons and Grub Crawl participants at the same time.

STRONG TURNOUT TO HELP DEVELOP STRONG KIDS Rutland-based YMCA raises enough money to help some 500 kids Earlier this year nearly 300 riders raised over $80,000 for local children and youth at the YMCA of Okanagan’s largest fundraiser of the year, YMCA Cycle for Strong Kids. It is estimated this amount will benefit more than 500 local kids.

They came, they saw and they pounded those scooters hard.

The Third Annual Kelowna Scooter Fest took place in early July in the heart of Rutland, taking over the Ben Lee skateboard park for a day of tricks, jumps, wheels and fun.

Skill levels ranged from beginners to intermediate to professional calibre.

A native of San Diego, he travelled to Kelowna to host the event.

Hershey said scooters aren’t just a fun past-time. A Vancouver event is an official International Scooter Association (ISA) event that acts as a qualifier for the USA nationals which are held in California.

The World Championships, which has been held in Barcelona, Spain for the past few years.

The event was sponsored in part by Wheels Scooter Shop, Havoc Pro Scooters and also featured great music and food trucks.

Kelowna residents Peggy Williams and Laura Brownlee remember what it was like to attend South Rutland Elementary in 1965.

“The field was all rocks and we used to collect them. For gym class we used to run around outside and I broke my finger back then,” said Williams, indicating her finger which still has a curve.

With a blast from the ’60s, ‘70s, ‘80s, ‘90s up to today, South Rutland Elementary celebrated its 50th birthday earlier this year.

For the faculty at South Rutland, the celebration is about community. Principal Mark Watson has been with the school for two months and with the district for 10 years.

“It’s less about the building, than the Students and parents gathered for a building of community. Retired principal Cathie Mutter spoke to the crowd of students and parents, with flowers in her hair.

“I may have hatched the idea just because it’s a milestone and it’s important we celebrate milestones,” she said.

The gym was half the size when the school opened, some classrooms and the library didn’t exist.

When the school opened in the ’60s, Mutter estimated they had around 150 students, but that number quickly doubled with renovations after the school’s official opening.

Now, she said, it sits at around 220 students.

Just three seasons after the program’s inception, the Kelowna Sun Devils are sitting at the apex of B.C. 18U AAA baseball.

On a hot, sunny Sunday afternoon at Edith Gay Park, the host Sun Devils lived up to their name by laying claim to the 2017 provincial championship with a 6-0 victory over the Cloverdale Spurs.

In following up on a stellar regular season when they posted a 30-8 record to finish in first, the Sun Devils met all expectations at provincials with a perfect 6-0 mark.

The Sun Devils faced their greatest adversity of the weekend in the semifinal on Sunday morning against South Fraser, rallying from behind for a dramatic 8-7 win.

As Team B.C., the Sun Devils will now get set to represent the province Aug. 10 to 14 at the Northeast Prospect College Showcase in Kingston, Rhode Island.

The B.C. champion Sun Devials are: Noah Ringness-Law, Kurtis Wall, Gavin Barrett, Noah Foufoulas, Jay Taylor, Tyson Lamb, Spencer Klassen, Jackson Sowerby, Jordan Laidlaw, Mat Aschenbrenner, Jaimes Guidon, Nathan Ringness-Law, Matt Fuchs, Dreyton Nelmes, Logan Bligh, Alex Thompson and Carson Moberg.

Students of the Forestry Program based at Rutland Senior Secondary got a hands-on experience with helping the community earlier this year as flood waters rose and volunteers efforts were needed around the area.

At the height of the floods, students and instructors piled into a Central Okanagan school bus one afternoon to prepare sandbags for areas that were in need.

“

I do really like the idea of the kids getting involved in community service.”

The students were sandbagging from all day and came prepared with waterproof boots, chainsaw pants, high-visibility vests and hard hats.

Being young, Bergstrom said they had the advantage helping out older, and retired members of the community.

This year’s Grub Crawl will feature a variety of new and returning restaurants for attendees to sample and enjoy.

But Grub Crawl isn’t the only food-related event on the URBA calendar.

On August 1, URBA was on site at the grand opening of the new and expanded Whisk Cake Company. Whisk is a locally owned cake shop operated by Red Seal Chef Tanya Garratt and her husband Jon. Originally specializing in wedding cakes, D’Andrea says the shop’s new expansion will allow Whisk to begin making its own ice cream and host cake-making classes.

D’Andrea says that the great strength of Rutland’s food scene is its diversity, which is just one factor that is contributing to the area’s population boom – especially the increasing number of postsecondary students.

“With the university being so close, we’re starting to see developers building a lot more student housing and a lot more multi-purpose developments. But if you want to entice students to live here, you need good amenities.

Rutland has a lot of great international restaurants – it’s a very diverse neighbourhood. There’s a lot of growth happening here.”

Grub Crawl 2017 will take place on September 19 from 4 PM to 8 PM. Tickets are $15 apiece and can be purchased at the URBA office on Dougall Road South.
