It’s a pairing that almost feels symbiotic: aircraft and craft beer. The theme of this year’s Abbotsford International Airshow is True North Strong, and with that comes paying homage to some of the things that make this country great: hockey, our military and Canadian beer. Brew North Strong is a festival offering local BC Craft beers, wine, and cider tastings, with the roar of a CF-18 Hornet overhead. This is the first time organizers of the Abbotsford Airshow have merged the world of beer and aviation, and they are sure it will be popular for existing fans, while also appealing to a new audience. “The festival brings a new flavour to the scene that we believe a lot of patrons from both worlds can look forward to enjoying as our partnership puts a spin on what you would see for entertainment at a craft beer festival,” says media and marketing director of the Abbotsford International Airshow, Jadene Mah. “We’re looking to expand our audiences and really hope to draw in some first timers. We know they’ll discover why Abbotsford International Airshow is the perfect weekend to enjoy entertainment in the sky — and now locally made craft beer too!” Some of the participating breweries include Ravens Brewing Company, Hathi Brewing Co., Old Abbey Ales, Chaos and Solace Craft Brewing, and many others. “Over the last decade there has been tremendous support towards the craft beer industry,” says Bernadette Maguire, chief operating director of Sequel Events Inc. “There are hundreds of craft breweries in British Columbia alone so there really is a huge variety available to people that never existed a decade ago.” She assures that even if you’ve never attended a craft beer festival or the Abbotsford Airshow, you won’t be disappointed. And it’s tough to see how anyone would be hard-pressed to sit back with their eyes to the sky watching dramatic aviation aerobatics and enjoying some local BC beer, wine or cider. “We like to think that this will be a pretty unique experience, one that you will not want to miss out on being a part of,” she adds. “People all have very different tastebuds, but we are confident that there will be something there for everyone to enjoy.” To participate, you need an Airshow ticket and then can add a Beer Festival Ticket for the full experience. Visitors will be able to partake in sampling using a token system, which means no matter if they are new to trying craft beer or already craft beer supporters, the festival makes for a fun atmosphere for tasting new beers. Kent Pietsch fell in love with flying at the age of four and has never looked back, only down — literally. He has made a living by catapulting his single-engine Interstate Cadet nose-first towards the ground from 6,000-ft, and plans to do so at the upcoming Abbotsford Airshow. Since 1973, Pietsch has performed aerobatic routines for millions of spectators across North America. The most unconventional and popular of which sees him land on a platform atop a standard-length pickup truck. The trick first got its start in Abbotsford when Pietsch bought an RV from a local and had a flat-bed rack bolted to its top. He also performs an airborne comedy routine that sees him mimic an erratic less-than-adept pilot who somehow manages to not crash. The routine encapsulates Pietsch’s goals for each show. “Fly safe, entertain the best I can, and have fun. The thrill never goes away.” Pietsch has a long history in aviation and was previously an airline pilot. But it’s his daring aerobatic routines in his Jelly Belly-sponsored plane that has been his claim to fame. Weighing just 800 pounds and combined with a 90-horsepower engine and 37-foot-long wings, Pietsch pushes the limits of what is possible in the air. But the real magic, he says, happens when he’s back on the ground. “I love flying, but I also love when a kid comes through who loves what I’m doing and I can help him along a bit [in learning about aviation].”

As an honorary Snowbird, he has had the pleasure of rubbing shoulders with some of the best pilots in the world, many of whom were inspired by Pietsch’s flying while growing up. “A lot of them say they got into this because they watched me fly, and I feel good about it,” he says. “I’m 66-years-old and it makes me feel like maybe I made a little difference in someone’s life.” With 38,000 hours of flying under his wings, Pietsch has a lot of time to ponder those 66 years. “You think about a lot of things when you’re in the sky; if you’re looking at the mountains, you realize how small you are and how big the world is,” he says. “It’s a great life.” The Abbotsford Airshow is August 11, 12 and 13, beginning on Friday with a twilight show, including a fireworks finale. Gates open at 3:30 p.m., with static displays and exhibit areas open, along with the kids zone and autograph booths. Geoff Latter always had his head in the clouds. He flew his first airplane at age 12 and never really came back down. While putting himself through school by working at Staples, if he could have built a paper airplane big enough to fly away, it would have been a swift farewell. But such is life, and Latter had to earn his stripes on the ground first: overcoming his troubled twenties and beginning the arduous process of pilot training. It was a conversation with his grandfather, who regaled him with stories of the airmen of WWII that eventually steered him in the right direction. “He said to me, ‘There are two types of people: those who work Monday to Friday and get weekends off; so they spend their whole lives living for two days; and those who do what they really love. Don’t be afraid to jump.’” Never were words taken more literally than those, as Latter — who has now been a professional pilot for 19 years — explained the gravity-defying aerial stunts he performs in Nancy — a fully restored Nanchang CJ-6A. “We go straight up into the blue sky, and then point the plane straight down before pulling quickly to level off about 300-ft above the ground — a distance that feels more like an inch when you’re traveling at 400 km/h.” Latter thrills Airshow audiences with this display of aerial ballet, demonstrating the graceful flying qualities of his special vintage war bird that he spent fourteen years saving for. Latter had flown a wide variety of aircraft ranging from the Boeing 737 (he is also a pilot for Westjet) to the North American P-51 Mustang. But it was his long-awaited acquisition of Nancy in 2012 that solidified his love for “the golden age of aviation.” “All the technology in the aircraft is from the 1930s, so when you’re sitting there, it feels like you’re in a time machine,” he says. “I’m strapped in so tight I can barely move, in between my legs is a control stick, all the engine controls are on the left, and on the right, there are emergency backup systems. There is a panel where the gun site used to be, and you can’t help but think that there was a 19-year-old kid who once sat in this plane, going off to fight in a battle with very little experience.” When Latter starts up the round engine, it’s like “five angry Harley Davidson motorcycles roaring to life.” The Nanchang CJ-6A has a large greenhouse canopy that allows for awesome visibility and, because of its unique smoke system, traces graceful lines across the sky.

Once his Airshow routine is done, he likes to walk around talking to the kids, because once upon a time, someone had inspired him not to be afraid to jump. “I didn’t win the lottery and I didn’t come from a rich family, but I had a ton of drive and a big dream,” he says. “I saved, I prepared, and I dedicated my time.” It’s that old adage, ‘the sky’s the limit,’ that Latter hopes to pass down to his six-year-old son, Evan. “He likes to fly upside like I do,” he says. “To be able to share that with my son, it’s my favourite part of flying.” See Geoff Latter and his Nanchang CJ-6A, Nancy, performing at the Abbotsford International Airshow August 11, 12 and 13. The Abbotsford Airshow’s Twilight Show on Friday, August 11 is a unique nighttime experience not to be missed. It offers a completely different show experience than the daytime performances on Saturday and Sunday, with daring routines in the fading light of the evening. Guests can tour the static display area, hear, see and feel the impressive power of the FA-18 Super Hornet and the Canadian Forces CF-18 Hornet with its paint design commemorating Canada’s 150th and witness the beauty of the Heritage Flight featuring the F-35, F-16, F-86 and P-51. The Canadian Forces Snowbirds will perform early in the evening with the AeroShell Formation Team taking to the skies later that night. The Friday night event crowd will be the first to see the AeroShell Formation Team as it is their first time at the show. The event is capped off with a fireworks display that will light up the sky at 9:45 p.m. Gates open at 3:30 p.m.
