Local Artist Completes Aquatic Centre Mural in Time for West Kelowna’s 10th Anniversary | By Mike Straus | There’s a brand new work of art adorning the Johnson Bentley Memorial Aquatic Centre on Old Okanagan Highway.

The new mural, designed by local artist Matthew Brown, was commissioned by the Suk’wtemsqilxw West Kelowna Arts Council (SWAC) to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Westside District Municipality’s incorporation.

Brown says that he submitted a design for the mural after hearing about the opportunity from Rebekah Wilkinson, the arts council’s original vice chair.

Taking inspiration from Claude Monet’s Wheatstacks, Brown created a concept for an impressionist landscape work portraying the view of the lake from the top of Mount Boucherie.

“I took a photo from the top of Boucherie to get a clear shot of the area we live in,” Brown says. “I added in the blue and orange colours to present a feeling by capturing different kinds of light. And then I started adding in symbols from Okanagan mythology, and finally I created a lot of negative space to make it look as if you’re walking into the mural.”

Brown designed his vision for the mural with a variety of practical considerations in mind, knowing that if his design were chosen, he’d be required to paint the mural on a short timeline. The fact that the mural is a community project also meant that Brown’s paint budget would have a hard upper limit. This restricted the number of colours in play, so Brown would need to choose his colours carefully to ensure they contrast well with black and white paint.

With these constraints in place, Brown set out to incorporate into the mural a variety of important figures from the Syilx oral traditions, emphasizing the connection between the SWAC and the Westbank First Nation. Syilx spiritual figures features in the mural include the Saskatoon Berry, the Bear, the Ogopogo, the Salmon, and the Bitter Root.

Students at Mount Boucherie capped their season with a 3-night run of William Shakespeare’s comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream. | By Mike Straus | Mount Boucherie acting and filmmaking teacher Kieran Emmond directed a true-to-its-roots production of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

The local production, which ran from April 27 to 29, saw a positive community response, keeping in line with past drama productions the school has organized.

“When I first came to Boucherie six years ago I was a little leery about how theatre would fly on the Westside,” Emmond says, “but we’ve sold out every seat of every show that we’ve done. We’ve been turning away people at the door. This show was no different – people enjoyed it, even those who didn’t understand a word of it.”

A self-described Shakespeare geek, Emmond says that he didn’t expect his students to be so passionate about the play as they would eventually become. But his growing program put him in search of a play with a large cast of characters, as the popularity of the drama program has made smaller plays impractical.

The students, he says, did quite well with the play, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Emmond points to the play-within-a-play, Pyramus and Thisbe, as one of the students’ favourite parts of the production.

“Pyramus and Thisbe was the most successful part of the production. It’s funny – at our first table read, kids were rolling on the floor laughing. They really enjoyed it.”

Emmond says he did his best to maintain the original Shakespearean version of the play, though he did trim some of the longer monologues. The original A Midsummer Night’s Dream can run for up to four hours, he says, and the Boucherie production retained about 80 percent of the original play.

“We trimmed off a bit from the longer monologues.

But the original language was still intact. I was a little worried about it, but I must admit, the students were into it.”

Emmond says the key to getting students to engage with Shakespeare – especially in the face of long stanzas and unusual line breaks – is in letting the students make the play their own. During rehearsals, Emmond actively encouraged students to deliver lines in creative ways, with any necessary adjustments happening after the fact. It’s this spontaneous personalization of the original Shakespeare that Emmond says made the production a success, as the play itself is already quite eclectic.

“A Midsummer Night’s Dream has some wonderful contrasts. There are these moments where the lovers

are quarrelling or embroiled in hi-jinks, and it’s quite dramatic. And then, a few minutes later, you have Pyramus and Thisbe being completely absurd. The great strength of the play is that it runs the gamut from darker scenes to lighter ones.”

Emmond says Shakespeare’s comedies aren’t given enough attention in school curriculum, and drama productions like this one are great opportunities for students to learn about the comedies.

“A Midsummer Night’s Dream has a little bit of all of Shakespeare’s plays in it,” he says. “It’s very funny, but it also has lots of layers of meaning. There’s an array of emotions, and at the end the play has a really nice catharsis. It’s not a one-note piece - it’s a journey.”

Emmond says he plans to continue growing the drama program at Mount Boucherie, and he already has nearly 70 students who wish to be part of productions in the fall. Shakespeare, he says, will definitely be on the programme.

“I’m probably going to make Shakespeare an annual challenge. I’m thinking about doing a version of Hamlet that has a female lead – we’re going to call it Hamlette.”

After 40 Years of Community Projects Rotary Club’s district governor.

The club shut its doors on July 1, ending a 40-year legacy of community projects.

Knowles did not explicitly state the reason why the club is shutting down, but he did say that the club has been losing members. Knowles says that immediately prior to shutting down, the Rotary Club of Westbank had just 12 members, down from 33 members who were active during the club term ending in 2011 (the latest year for which membership data is publicly available).

A June 12, 2017 post on the Rotary Club of Westbank’s Facebook page states that the West Kelowna Daybreak Rotary Club is still active and accepting new members, with club meetings taking place every Thursday at 7 AM.

Dave is Dave Pazdziersky, one of the carpenters at the mill. Known for his beautiful projects, he once again amazed his bosses and co-workers with what he produced. The flag is fully displayed on both side and is composed of Gorman’s barn wood, used for decorative finishes.

“The barn wood is something new for us,” said Arkle, “so this flag is a nice way to display our product.

It’s about 8 ft high and 16 ft wide. Dave has made some amazing stuff for us. He’s an incredible artist.”

Since the parade, people have been asking what Gorman Bros. intends to do with the flag. Although a final decision hasn’t been made yet, Arkle said that it will probably be mounted on one of the buildings at the mill where it will be visible from the highway.

Bylaw Officers Have Rewards in Store For Young Cyclists

The City of West Kelowna Bylaw Enforcement Officers will be keeping an eye out this summer for young cyclists and have rewards in store for those caught doing it right.

Thanks to an initiative of BrainTrust Canada, Bylaw Officers have been provided helmet coupons for youth who may need a helmet and treat tickets to reward those doing the right thing such as wearing a helmet correctly or walking their bike across the street.

The plan is to get every cyclist on board with the importance of bike helmets and road safety.

BrainTrust Canada focuses on preventable brain injury and providing support services for those affected by brain injury.

The Bylaw Officers, who conduct bicycle patrols throughout the community during summer months, look forward to rewarding young cyclists in West Kelowna.

Keeping mosquitos at bay this summer This summer is bad for mosquitos so here are some tips on how to avoid being attacked.

It’s mosquito season and a few helpful, easy-to-follow tips may help keep the pests from breeding around the home.

Anyone who’s been doing yardwork or enjoying the great outdoors lately has likely noticed that mosquitoes are out in droves. This is the result of wet spring weather, warming temperatures and pools of standing water that haven’t dried out or been properly drained and cleaned.

Interior Health and Health Canada offer great mosquito prevention tips on their websites.

Visit https://www.interiorhealth.ca/YourEn vironment/CommunicableDiseaseControl/ Pages/Mosquitos.aspx or https://www.canada.ca/ en/public-health/services/diseases/west-nile-virus/ prevention-west-nile-virus.html To keep mosquitoes from breeding around the home: • Eliminate all standing water around your property – it’s prime mosquito habitat • Clean and keep dry eaves, pool covers, tires, wheel barrels and other items where water collects • Tip over fishing boats, canoes and kayaks or keep them tightly tarped or in a covered area to keep water from collecting in their hulls • Clean bird baths once or twice a week, filling them with fresh water each time • Keep water moving in ornamental ponds and water gardens by installing aeration pumps • Put tight lids or screens on rain barrels • Keep emptying and wiping out any saucers under flower pots and urns To keep from being bitten: • Install tightly woven, untorn and property fitted screens in all door and window frames • Keep indoors at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active • Wear light-coloured clothes as mosquitoes tend to be attracted to darker colors • Wear long-sleeved, collared shirts, pants, high socks and hats as weather allows • Use suitable repellants containing DEET or Icaridin and follow instructions for use

Opportunity for Westbank First Nation residents to get involved in WFN government decision-making

The approximately 9,500 Westbank First Nation (“WFN”) residents who are not WFN Members are represented at the WFN government through the WFN Advisory Council.

With the next Advisory Council Election coming up on October 19, 2017, WFN residents are encouraged to either run for election to represent one of the five WFN Advisory Council districts or nominate and vote for a district representative.

“The Advisory Council serves as an oversight and communication tool for WFN non-Member residents,” says Cathy Graham, a current Advisory Council member who represents the East Boundary District. One of the benefits to sitting on the Advisory Council

includes having some say in how tax dollars are spent. Government decisions that the Advisory Council has been involved in include the implementation of regional library services for WFN residents, the new WFN Youth Centre, and discussions on how to prioritize development plans.

Ensure your interests are considered in WFN government decisions by getting involved in the Advisory Council Election.

Any resident of Westbank First Nation who is not a WFN Member is eligible for nomination. Details on the nomination and election process will be publicized closer to the nomination date.

Advisory Council responsibilities include: • Advising Chief and Council re-

garding proposed WFN laws or law amendments; • Reviewing the Local Government Services Budget, which sets property taxation rates and spending; • Receiving and considering petitions from (non-WFN Member) residents; • Advocating on behalf of special interest groups; and • Meeting once per month at the WFN government office.
