Red Deer Royals earn gold at world music championships

A trip to the Netherlands would be a once in a lifetime opportunity for many people.

For those who play an instrument - competing at an international competition in a band would be a highlight of their musical career.

Being able to win gold at that international competition is an astronomical success.

The Red Deer Royals Show Band managed to do all these things at the World Music Championships (WMC) in Kerkrade, NL, where they won the gold medal in the show band category.

Director of the Red Deer Royals Michael Mann was very impressed with how his students performed overseas.

“The Royals are on a trip around Holland and we competed at the World Music Contest, which happens every four years. It can be compared to the Olympics of bands,” he said.

“In our competition, which is show band, we received the gold medal. I am very proud of the students for all the work they put in to get to this point.

Mann said the competition is a long one, with performances happening over the course of the entire month of July.

“It runs for almost a month over the course of three weekends,” he said.

“We have had many, many bands come - some of them are regular and some are show bands like we are. For most of us, this is the experience of a lifetime.

“For a lot of them, they won’t get the opportunity to do this again with the Red Deer Royals.

Four years from now, we may be a new band and we may not go for another eight years to this competition depending on schedules.”

The Royals have been to the WMC before, however never under the tutelage of Mann who said that an extraordinary

“This is the highlight of our season; it was what we were working towards and it is our final event of the season.”

ive-year-old Red Deerian Ethan has had his wish come true through the Make A Wish Foundation, and will be heading off to Walt Disney World with his mom Jacqueline Fowler this Friday.

Ethan was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) in August of 2016, a day that his mom said changed her whole world. “It was just so hard. There were so many ups and downs and it’s just a whole new world living like this,” she said.

Fowler, who is from Red Deer, met the Make A Wish Foundation crew at the Ronald McDonald House in Calgary back in October of 2016, when she and Ethan were living there for 10 months.

“We were living in the Ronald McDonald House for 10 months so we got to meet them because they were volunteering one night to make suppers there, and they explained what Make A Wish was all about and they were saying that Ethan would qualify, so we went from there,” she said.

Make A Wish grants wishes to kids with life-threatening illnesses, and it was this June that Ethan was cleared to get his wish come true of going to Disney World.

He and mom will be heading off this Friday for seven days, and will get access to Disney World, Universal Studios and Sea World.

They will be staying at Give the Kids The World, a place where sick kids are sent to stay with their families.

Fowler said Ethan is not only excited to meet Mickey Mouse, but for the plane ride, too.

“This will be his first plane ride.”

She said when it was revealed a few weeks ago at a Red Deer McDonald’s that Ethan would be going to Disney World, he was so happy because he finally got to go out in public.

Being immune compromised, Fowler said he didn’t go out a whole lot because of the risk involved in getting sick. She said the McDonald’s Play Place also used to be his favourite place to go before he was diagnosed.

“We used to go there everyday and he would play and he hasn’t been there for a year, so it was quite the day.”

With a love of fairs and superheroes like Spiderman and Batman, his mom said Ethan can’t wait to go on the trip.

“I don’t know if he fully understands it all, but he’s really happy. He’s counting down the days.”

The two returned back to their home in Red Deer’s north end the beginning of June from their stay at the Ronald McDonald House in Calgary. “There were a few times that Ethan got sick, so we couldn’t stay in the Ronald McDonald House or he got hospitalized or we had to come home because he couldn’t stay there.”

She said the journey has been hard, and there’s a fear that always haunts you in a situation like this.

“It just feels like you can’t control anything in your life because this illness just took over his life.”

Ethan is doing really well, she said, and has made it to the maintenance stage now.

He is, however, high risk Leukemia ALL, which means he’s at high risk to relapse, so he has to be kept a watchful eye on.

Once a month they travel to Calgary to get his chemotherapy done and she will also continue to give him oral chemo every night until January 2020, which will be his last treatment.

Fowler said she was very overwhelmed with emotion when they found out he had his wish come true.

“I was just so happy that he finally gets a little bit of his childhood back and he gets to feel special.”

Progressive Conservatives and Wildrose Party both support uniting the right

Members of both the Progressive Conservatives of Alberta and the Wildrose Party overwhelmingly gave the green light on Saturday

to uniting the right.

The Tories supported the move with 95% of members’ votes in favour; Wildrose Party members also supported the bid to unite the parties with a 95% approval rate as well.

On Monday a new party interim leader was chosen - OldsDidsbury-Three Hills MLA Nathan Cooper.

Jason Kenney, leader of the PCs, told a gathering in Calgary on Saturday that, “The special reso-

lution is adopted with 95 per cent of the vote.

“Friends, this is a great day for Alberta. Hope is on the horizon - we are renewing the Alberta advantage,” he said. “In this democratic decision today, tens of thousands of Albertans have decided to put the future ahead of the past. To focus on what unites us rather than on what divides us. To part with the egos, the brands, the labels and the resentments that have accumulated over a decade of division. “(We’ve) decided to put our province ahead of any political party,” he said, adding that under the NDP leadership, the province is seeing increased taxation, higher levels of debt and has also lost millions of dollars of investment.

“We will not simply stand by passively and allow the NDP to win the next election by default in vote-splitting. Today, Alberta conservatives, in all of their diversity, have decided that we are stronger united.”

Earlier in the afternoon, as mentioned, an overwhelming majority of Wildrose Party members who cast ballots on uniting with the Progressive Conservatives supported the move.

Party members spent the day at the Radisson Hotel in Red Deer discussing party business and the pros and cons of the move, and ultimately came away supporting it much to the delight of Wildrose Leader Brian Jean.

“I want to say to all the Wildrose members and to all Albertans, today is not the end of Wildrose, but a new beginning where we are one step closer to putting power back into the hands of of the ordinary working people of Alberta,” he said.

“I’m surrounded by people who care for me. That gives my family peace of mind.”

“We are together going to restore conservative principles to our great province,” he said, adding the party sold about 25,000 memberships in just two months leading up to the unity vote.

“What we have achieved together is nothing short of remarkable,” he said, adding that serving as Wildrose leader since March of 2015 has been the greatest honour of his life.

“This job matters. It matters because what politicians do affects our loved ones, our friends and our neighbours.

“We participated in this today because we are here to make a difference for our future.

“I’ve seen the unbreakable hope and the determination of all Albertans to once again make our province the very best that it can be,” he said.

Next up, a leadership election is set to happen this October with a founding convention next year.

City to look at planning for electrical challenges due to storms

The City of Red Deer is looking at better preparing its infrastructure in the face of unexpected storms.

Councillor Paul Harris brought forth his Notice Of Motion in the wake of recent events, like that of the wind storm that hit the City in June.

His motion, which passed unanimously, will see administration bring forward an electrical infrastructure capital plan that addresses both the strengthening of public and private infrastructure to enable the community to resist climate change while meeting the electrical demand challenges that are imminent in the changing transportation sector.

Administration will also consider electricity generation and storage solutions that mitigate electrical fluctuations resulting from factors outside municipal control. A preliminary report will also be brought to council in conjunction with the 2018 capital budget with detail plans in subsequent capital budgets.

Harris said as a result of his motion, he sees more focus on what could happen and the kinds of events the City is going to face.

“If we can be more careful and more methodical on our planning and what we need to do to change our City over the next number

of years,” he said, adding those are all capital items that need to come forward in the coming budget and subsequent budgets.

He said the City is currently looking at a number of energy generation possibilities.

“City Manager Craig Curtis mentioned our co-generation plant at the wastewater treatment plant, and we’re looking at some methane capture at the landfills. There’s also some solar energy happening at the City yards right now,” he said.

He added the last storm that hit Red Deer wasn’t a big storm when thinking about the ice storm that occurred in Quebec a couple of years ago.

“That would take a lot of our infrastructure out right now. Our newer neighbourhoods may be a little bit better, but when you think of the number of power lines that run to those newer neighbourhoods, those would all collapse.”

He said with the older neighbourhoods that still have the wooden telephone poles with power running overhead, they would be all out in an ice storm like that.

“So we could take 60, 70 per cent of our City out in an ice storm like there was in Quebec.”

With many citizens out for a number of days in the last storm that hit Red Deer, the damage to electrical infrastructure, although preliminary, was between $500,000 to $1 million.

Last weekend was a historic one for the political landscape in Alberta.

The Wildrose and Progressive Conservative parties, each with an overwhelming 95% vote in favour, have merged to become one right wing party - the United Conservative Party.

Many details still have to be worked out in terms of what exactly the party will look like. A new leader will also have to be chosen. Former Wildrose Leader Brian Jean has announced he will be running for that position as has Doug Schweitzer.

Former Progressive Conservative Leader Jason Kenney is rumoured to be seeking the top spot as well.

So what does this mean for Albertans? Well little is known yet, it will mean that Albertans will not have to chose between two right wing parties in the next election. While as separate parties, many of their ideologies were the same, there are some difference of opinions between the two.

It is an interesting time in history because the PCs were almost an institution in Alberta. This marks the end of an era - no matter how you viewed their political stances - it is a big change.

What also speaks high volumes is the significant amount of support in each party to merge - members in each voting 95% in favour of unity.

Announced on the heels of the historic unity vote for conservatives in Alberta, members of the legacy Wildrose and Progressive Conservative caucuses held their first joint meeting as united conservatives and elected the new party’s interim leader, Olds-DidsburyThree Hills MLA Nathan Cooper. The vote showed a united caucus ready to fight for hard-working, everyday Albertans, said Cooper.

“Last weekend, we saw an outstanding victory for the democratic process and the people of Alberta.

With members of both legacy parties voting 95 per cent in favour of unity, we now begin the process of

party building. Members have driven this process from the very beginning and we thank them for the outpouring of support. They will continue to be pivotal to our future success. It’s important to remember that our legislative work is of the utmost importance, even as the leadership race begins. We’ll be holding the NDP government to account. As the NDP continues to fail working Alberta families by imposing risky, ideological policies that cause job losses across the province, our caucus is united in its goal of advocating for strong, common sense solutions that create jobs for Albertans. I want to thank the united caucus for putting their confidence in me as their interim leader, it is truly a great honour. Conservatives are now united for the greater good of Albertans, and we will put their concerns at the forefront of our legislative efforts each and every day. This is a new day for our province.”

A new leader for the United Conservative Parry will ultimately be chosen Oct. 28th.

Reader gives his thoughts on upcoming municipal election On Oct. 16th we will be voting. A mayor, eight City councillors, seven public school board trustees and/or five separate school board trustees. In October 2013, our last municipal election we had 56 candidates.

So far none of the incumbents have declared their leaving the race. This will make it extremely difficult for newcomers, and next generation politicians, as the incumbents have media coverage, name recognition and opportunities greatly, in their favour. They win almost by default.

Which I believe is not what is best for our City. The incumbents are good individuals, but perhaps a bit tired, less passionate, and perhaps losing steam.

April 18th, 2007 our council accepted an audited financial statement that our population in 2016 was 99,832 residents down from 100,807 residents in 2015.

Remember the hoopla when Red Deer hit 100,000 residents, even naming our 100,000 citizen, but nary a word about our decline. Why? Even declared candidates, vying for a council seat, do not question our loss but talk about handling growth.

Businesses are moving out of town.

Penhold, Blackfalds, Sylvan Lake, even Gasoline Alley grew while Red Deer declined but not a word, why?

Red Deer lost 975 more residents than it gained and 777 of that total came from north of the river, which is home 30% of the population, which means the neighbourhoods north of the river are declining eight times faster than the ones south of the river. While Red Deer lost 975 residents, Blackfalds gained 700 residents in the same period. Will anyone address this issue?

Could it be because there is no high school north of the river? This year will see a fourth high school open south of the river with two more in the books.

Five high schools will be along 30th Ave., but no high schools for north of the river.

Is the huge decline in population north of the river related to the lack of a high school?

Or is the losses due to lack of recreational facilities? The north side of the river has the Dawe Centre, a 40-year-old complex. On the south side we have the downtown Recreation Centre, Michener Aquatic Centre, Downtown Arena (Servus Arena), Centrium complex,

Collicutt Recreation Centre, Pidherney Curling Centre, Kinex Arena, Kinsmen Community Arenas, Red Deer Curling Centre, and the under-construction Gary W. Harris Centre. The City is also talking about replacing the downtown recreation centre with an expanded 50m pool.

Will anyone address this distortion of unequal access to recreational and educational facilities? Will a candidate campaign for a new indoor pool north of the river? Does the time required and the long commutes deter young people from participating in extra-curricular and sporting activities?

Our region has the poorest air quality according to a CBC report, and the monitors in Riverside Drive show the poorest in the region. Could it be because the north side residents have to commute to the southside, far too much for education, recreation, cultural and medical issues? Any thoughts from any candidates?

Crime rate, unemployment and vacancies are all higher than the provincial average but not a creative idea, or solution to be found.

Red Deer is a beautiful City but it

does have its share of problems. The world around us is passing us by, residents and businesses are leaving and we are still reliving our past, making us almost insignificant in the grand scheme of things.

The Red Deer Arena was built in the 1950s and we are rebuilding it in the same spot, in 2017. The question that was never explored was whether its 1950s location was still suitable in 2017. What was right in the 1950s may not be right in 2017, but we do not know, because we never thought of change.

Oct. 16th may see Red Deer wishing to remain in the past or the residents may wish for change, modernization, fresh ideas, and solutions for problems, not currently, being addressed.

It will be tough for the next generation to break into, as the saying goes, these old boys’ clubs. Saying everything is nice, is not true and won’t get you elected, unless you are an incumbent.

Find your passion, review the facts and find your voice. We need it.

Alberta cannabis survey sees 35,000 respondents so far Survey open until July 31st, Central Albertans encouraged to participate

The provincial government has began to amp its plans for when the federal cannabis legislation comes into effect next year by July 1st.

The Alberta Government is currently conducting a survey which is asking Albertans how they would like to see cannabis use and distribution be implemented in this province.

Alberta Minister of Justice and Solicitor General Kathleen Ganley said July 1st, 2018 is an ambitious timeline, however this provincial survey - which has already had over 35,000

respondents - will help provincial legislation reflect the values of Albertans.

“The decision to legalize was ultimately made by the federal government, but the provincial government will have to make a bunch of surrounding decisions,” Ganley Said.

“We want to ensure the views and values of Albertans are reflected in how we go about legalizing, We are excited that this had good uptake so far and I think the more input we can get, the better.”

establish where it will be acceptable to use cannabis in public settings; to establish a legal age for use; to ensure that roads and workplaces are safe and to discover the economic implications and opportunities within the legalization of cannabis.

“It is still open until the 31st of July and I encourage everyone to participate,” Ganley said.

The timeline is something Ganley believes is workable for the provincial government.

“It is important we have a model in place that represents the values of Albertans and we are proceeding on the basis that that is the timeline,” she said.

“Sometimes you have ambitious deadlines and we will move ahead in order to make sure everything is rolled out in an appropriate way.”

The method of cannabis distribution and use in Alberta will be based on what is discovered through this survey and through stakeholder round-table meetings, sector-specific meetings and surveys at public venues across Alberta.

“It will depend on a couple of different things,” Ganley said.

“It will depend on some of the decisions on how restrictive it is and who is doing the sale of it. A lot of that will depend on the feedback we get back from our survey and then hopefully we will have more to say about it in the fall in terms of what we heard and where we are going generally.”

While many people throughout Canada and other jurisdictions where cannabis prohibition has been relaxed have voiced that this could alleviate problems within the justice system, Ganley remained cautious.

“There will be some matters that come out of the justice system as a result of this,” she said.

“I don’t think our numbers indicate that it will have a huge impact. Really what will be taken out is simple possession charges, because there are still going to be trafficking charges if you are trafficking to minors.

“There is some question as to whether we will see more impaired charges as well as a result.”

Ganley also addressed the issue of taxation, saying ending organized crime cannabis trafficking is more important then heavy taxation.

“Our initial projections don’t really indicate that there will be a huge revenue stream,” she said.

“There is obviously some revenue associated but you have to be careful where you set the taxation levels because ultimately a large part of goal of this enterprise is to get rid of the illegal market so that we don’t have that gang activity surrounding it.

“In order to do that, we can’t price ourselves out of the market. Our initial projections are not showing super high revenue and there will be some costs in terms of public education campaigns and that sort of thing.”

“Ultimately, this was a decision by the federal government but it is definitely coming and it is coming quite quickly,” Ganley said.

“I think all Albertans should take an interest in the society they live in and be willing to share their opinions and thoughts in order so we can create a province that is reflective of the values of all Albertans.”

entral Alberta is well noted for its remarkable level of volunteerism. Here at The Lending Cupboard, volunteers are the very backbone of our operations.

From the moment clients step through the door they are greeted in the storefront by an incredibly kind, compassionate team that takes great care to see that they are fitted and provided with the appropriate equipment. Then there’s the crew that make sure all the equipment is sanitized and in good operating shape – they’re awesome, working tirelessly but you often hear the joking and camaraderie amongst the crews! We also have volunteers that step to the plate when we have special projects, be it a fundraiser, information booth such the farmer’s Market, members always seem to step forward to help.

Of course an organization such as ours would not sustain itself if it were not overseen by a skilled (volunteer) Board of Directors. All of these people joined The Lending

Cupboard because they have compassion and passion for the people we serve and support throughout Central Alberta.

We have members that are with us for the summer while others prefer to be with us through the fall and winter.

Most contribute one shift a week while a few like to come in more often. We will do our best to make it work for them. We have had some that have been with us for several years and those that come and spend time between school or work breaks. The one constant we hear is that The Lending Cupboard is a welcoming, caring place for clients and volunteers alike. With a team of almost 80 people there are so many great people and there is always room for more. Volunteerism is an ever evolving movement but one thing is for sure, the Volunteers at The Cupboard help to keep the doors open and the atmosphere warm!

City backs down on full launch of Speed on Green Red Deer council votes in favour of extending warning ticket period to November

The City of Red Deer will be providing more driver education on Speed on Green, a tool aimed to increase safety at high risk collision intersections in the City of Red Deer.

The City will also provide an additional warning ticket period and commence violation ticketing Nov. 1st, and they will also undertake a review of their policy regarding the use of traffic cameras and photo radar.

The matter was discussed at City council Monday night.

The resolution came about from Councillor Tanya Handley’s original Notice Of Motion to delay the issuing of fees generated by Speed on Green until a provincial review is completed, and continue on with warning tickets to allow for further public safety education.

She brought her Notice Of Motion forward after hearing in May that the provincial government was doing a full review of photo radar as it’s used across the province.

“They made some comments about people believing that photo radar was a cash cow in the province and they wanted to make sure that municipalities weren’t using it in that manner, and that it was for safety and that the revenues generated were fair,” said Handley.

Administration had contacted the Solicitor General’s department responsible for the program review of automated traffic enforcement, but the department was unable to provide any information as to when the review in the province will be completed.

Since the City just introduced Speed on Green technology Handley felt it was important to wait until that provincial review was done and they had their approval on the program as it’s being rolled out.

“When this was presented to us in January there was a test done and there were 400 vehicles over a five day period that were exceeding the speed limit, and that was what moved me to realize that we do have a speeding problem in some key intersections in the City.”

She said although she was not generally a fan of that type of enforcement, in this case, she said, it was evident that some of the key intersections in the City have a real speeding problem.

“So that really is for me the most important part of this if we have people know that they’re going to get a ticket, they’ll slow down at those intersections and make those key intersections safer for our community.”

She said although her original

motion failed at Monday night’s council meeting, she is okay with the extended time frame of the new alternative motion.

Like many other councillors around the table, Handley didn’t think the City did enough public notification before they started sending out notices to people.

“People need more time to wrap their head around what this means because it is a new concept for Red Deer,” she said.

Councillor Dianne Wyntjes, who moved the passed motion,

agreed with all of her fellow councillor’s points around their thoughts on Speed on Green.

“As Councillor (Buck) Buchanan has said to me in his policing work, he’s seen many things and we often forget about our EMS workers and our police workers who have to be on those scenes of the accidents, so if anything this discussion I think will be a reminder for all of us,” said Wyntjes.

She said the additional time extended to Nov. 1st will allow

one more round for folks to understand what Speed on Green is and what not speeding means in the community, and at the same time keeping some of the City’s revenue intact.

For 2017, a revenue of $350,000 was budgeted for Speed on Green.

Speed on Green was implemented effective July 11th in the City with a one-month period of warning tickets prior to the issuance of violation tickets.

Wildfires have been a problem in western Canada for generations Tragically, this year has been marked again by a series of wildfires, particularly in British Columbia. These blazes have caused a lot of damage, destroyed homes and businesses, and resulted in large-scale evacuations.

While some years are worse than others, wildfires have been a significant problem in western Canada for generations. John Palliser visited the Red Deer area during a major drought in the summer of 1858.

He reported that the district was a scene of ‘black desolation’ as enormous fires had swept across the valley.

Those blazes had consumed not only the expanses of grassland, but also the stands of poplar and spruce, which had stood along the river, the creeks and nearby lakes.

In the summer of 1883, Thomas Kains led a party of surveyors in the Red Deer area. He wrote that their work was often hampered by the dense smoke from the fires raging in the wooded districts to the west. In fact, he reported that, at times, it was difficult to make out

the survey rods through the smoke, even though the surveyors were standing only a relatively short distance apart.

The threats of fire continued long after agricultural settlement commenced in the 1880s and 1890s.

There was very little that the early settlers could do to stop or control the fires once they got started.

They could take some preventative measures such as clearing and plowing wide fireguards around their homes, barns and pastures.

Buckets of water along with pieces of leather, blankets and sacks were kept on hand to try and beat back any embers that drifted into the farmyards and onto roofs.

However, if the fires leapt across these fireguards, or if the embers became too numerous to extinguish, the only course of action left was to flee for the hoped-for safety of nearby sloughs, lakes, creeks and/or rivers.

trol and suppression, many of the first forms of local government in Central Alberta were statute labour and fire districts.

These local authorities could require settlers to build roads and create community fireguards. Their time and labour would then be credited against their property taxes.

The legal system also provided significant support. The punishments for both deliberately and accidentally setting fires were severe. Huge fines could be levied by the local magistrates. If the fire was very large and destructive, people could be, and often were, sent to jail.

Nevertheless, fires remained a serious problem well into the twentieth century. The year 1910 was one example of a bad year.

Homes and farms were lost in huge blazes that swept across the Pine Lake, Hillsdown/Valley Centre and Poplar Ridge districts. A great deal of timber in the Lobstick Valley, near Leslieville, was destroyed in a large forest fire.

During the summer of 1910, a major time fire broke out in the Red Dee River Canyon, a few kilometres east of the City.

The year of 1919 was another bad one. A huge fire raged

by Rocky Mountain House.

The annual Red Deer Fair was plagued by heavy amounts of

smoke. Spectators in the grandstand soon found themselves covered in ash.

The Fair Board put their best possible spin on the conditions.

They stated that the smoky air helped to, “Cut off the full glare

of the hot July sun.”

Ultimately, their upbeat attitude seemed rewarded. With the very warm and dry weather, the crowds at the Fair turned out to be some of the best on record.

Piecing together the past through artistic expression

Red Deer artist Jewel Shaw takes a look back at her past through her exhibit Memory Bones.

The exhibit, she said, is about the investigation and collection of objects to piece together her past, history and family. It’s currently on display at the Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery.

“A lot of the pieces are from stories from my grandmother and family, which are not fully truthful,” she said.

Shaw said there was a particular story that her grandmother and mother told her about a childhood fire her mom witnessed when she was very young. “They lost everything in this fire, and my grandmother told me that her twin sister had set the fire for reasons we don’t know.”

Shaw later asked her mom what happened with the fire and what she remembers from that day. She told Shaw that it was in fact her mother (Shaw’s grandmother) that set the fire with her sister.

“It was like a mystery, so a lot of things I’m trying to piece together,” she said.

She added back then there were a lot of hard times with racism and much of her family went to residential schools.

Some of the pieces displayed in Memory Bones are from the interview she had with her mom.

“My mom told me that my grandmother and her sister set the fire and my grandpa was inside of it, and the very last minute before it all burned down, they went in and rescued him, because he had been passed out,” she said.

Her grandfather survived, but later passed away, along with her grandmother.

And so to this day, Shaw never got the chance to confront her grandmother about what really happened the day of the fire.

Shaw said her exhibit mainly tried to create more of an emotional feeling. She said not knowing the exact details, she uses metaphors, objects and text in place of what she’s been told to try and tell the story in a way that is open enough for viewers.

“A lot of times the objects and texts say a lot more than what is actually truth, so it could be opening up stories from the common experience of people at the time or objects they collect.

Shaw mainly draws and specializes in printmaking, doing lots of etchings.

“I do a lot of drawing on copper and then I etch,” she said, adding that most of her work in Memory Bones are etchings combined with some digital experimentation.

Growing up in High Prairie, Shaw’s high school didn’t have an art program, but she was determined that she wanted to be an artist, even though she had no experience. She would draw a lot in her spare time, and after high school stuck around High Prairie for a few more years before deciding to attend Red Deer College for visual arts.

She stayed in Red Deer for a year doing drawing and printmaking to build up her portfolio

before attending the University of Alberta for a bachelor’s degree, and then later, her master’s degree in printmaking.

After she was done at the University of Alberta, she went off to the Banff Centre and did a work study in printmaking.

“You get paid to work and they support you in your art practice, so you’re sort of working in your field, and that was amazing,” she said. Following that she did some travelling, a residency back at Red Deer College and then another residency in Australia.

Shaw continues to do her art work consistently, and travels to Edmonton’s print shop to do some work there. She also draws at home, doing a little bit of digital work with her drawings.

She currently has a show running in Santa

Fe, New Mexico, with another show going up in September in Saskatchewan.

“My work is out there doing all the travelling for me, but right now my home base is Red Deer.

I have a three-year old right now, so he keeps me busy,” she said with a laugh.

With her inspiration drawn from various things, it’s those stories from her past that come back to her, steering some of her inspiration still to this day.

“I’m always working through my personal wondering and speculation, so as I’m drawing it’s almost like I’m listening for answers.”

Shaw’s exhibit runs until Aug. 20th at Red Deer Museum MAG + Art Gallery.

Entertainment Central Alberta’s The Frank opens for I Mother Earth

A long time staple of the Central Alberta music scene - The Frank - will be opening for I Mother Earth (IME) this Sunday at Bo’s Bar and Grill.

Lead guitarist of The Frank, Denver Swainson, was often asked if the band - which has been together for 20 years - could cover IME. “People have asked me if I have ever covered them and the truth is, their music was too complicated to cover when we were 14, 15 at the time,” he said, adding that IME’s album Scenery and Fish is a huge

part of his development as an artist.

“If someone asked me back then if I thought I would open for I Mother Earth, I would say that would be incredible. I just didn’t think it would take 20 years,” he said.

The show comes as a precursor to the fall release of Long After the Storm, The Frank’s first full album since 2005.

“We had done a few three-song EPs now and then, but this album we hadn’t really planned,” Swainson said. “We had a whole bunch of songs ready and then our friend Mon (Duncalf) from England asked if we wanted to record some

stuff at our house on our system.

We hadn’t really used it yet, so we said sure.

“We recorded 10-12 songs the first time and then we said, ‘I guess we have an album’. We weren’t really expecting it but the quality was good. He came back down again and we recorded another 10-12 songs and it ended up being 23 songs. They were all recorded at home without a plan without really a rhyme or reason. We decided to make a double album out of it and they are all songs over the last 12 years that were either skipped on the three song recordings or were written within the last five years.”

The album is the culmination of 12 years of life experience, which had plenty of rocky patches for the band. Swainson explained that song writing was very therapeutic for his journey.

“There is a lot of different subject matter in the album,” he said.

“We went through the house fire, which led to a loss of routine - I started writing a lot of songs in the rental after that. We also lost a couple of friends - one to a heart attack and one to suicide. It was hard not to be living somewhere were you are out of place and dealing with a lot of emotions.

After that, we moved into our

brand new place which has our brand new band room.

“We kept writing songs and perfected what I had done and it was clear sailing for a bit and then very quickly my wife Sara (Page) was diagnosed with MS. More songs came out of that. We sold our brand new house after that to move to an acreage to live out our dreams to own stock, animals and horses. A lot has happened and song writing has been my outlet for it. We ended up with a 23 song album, which is the most we have done. It all just happened and was recorded live off the floor at the new acreage house.”

Swainson said that creating the album was enjoyable because it has allowed them to record a live experience - something he feels fits nicely with The Frank.

“It is neat in the fact that it is not like the 2005 album, which was tracked and made perfect,” he said.

“There are mistakes in this one and it is pretty raw. I have always like the way we have sounded live.

When I listen to our 2005 album, I don’t quite hear the way we are live. What you hear on the album is exactly what you will hear at the show. It caught a snap shot. At the time, we were still settling in and we had been through a lot.”

CentreFest hits the City’s downtown this weekend

Red Deer’s annual downtown street festival CentreFest hits the downtown core this weekend.

The colourful, lively event features a range of street performers that are in search of the best place or ‘pitch’ to perform their art.

CentreFest runs on Ross Street and 49th Ave. July 29th from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. and July 30th from noon to 6 p.m.

Folks are also invited to the kick-off barbecue in City Hall Park at lunchtime on July 28th for a ‘taste of CentreFest’.

As the CentreFest web site points out, buskers can be dancers, mimes, artists, clowns, magicians,

musicians, puppeteers, snake charmers, jugglers, acrobats, sword swallowers, tumblers, living statues and comedians - their diversity really knows no limits. No two shows are ever the same, which also makes street performing a truly unique form of entertainment.

Also according to the web site, other highlights include the Axiom Architecture Inc. Circus World, Rotary Water World, 100.7 FM The Cruz Music World, Street Market and food vendors.

Portable washrooms are available on site. There is a Toonie Tent for change to ‘put in the hats’. Emergency first-aid services are available. Parking is available all around the site.

with CentreFest in various capacities over the years and is in her fourth as the festival’s director.

Looking back, CentreFest was pretty much a hit from the word go.

And today, estimates are that between 25,000 to 30,000 check out the two-day event. There are a number of things that have fueled that growing popularity over the years.

Of course, audience members are encouraged to ‘pass the hat’ and make donations to help support the artists, but as Shimek pointed out, some folks give more which means that those without the funds to do so can still take in the wonders of CentreFest.

For Shimek, her work with CentreFest pretty much runs year-long. After a festival wraps - typically in

late July or early August - she takes the month of August to take a break.

Into the New Year, it’s time to seek out community sponsorship.

This past May, there was the ‘Benefit on the Bridge’ - a fundraiser held on the CPR Pedestrian Bridge which featured music, food trucks and dancing.

As to this year’s event, Shimek has noted that the focus is on Canadian artists.

These include Red Deer native Spandy Andy, The Silver Starlets, Mighty Mike, Tianna the Traveller and The Checkerboard Guy. There are also a number of artists known as rovers, who will wander about the CentreFest site entertaining folks.

Do you even write the word ‘bro’?

A popular saying in the fitness industry these days among the younger kids is, ‘Do you even lift bro?’

It is meant as a bit of an insult to people who try to talk the language, but clearly just read something somewhere and don’t actually participate in strength training.

I bumped into a lady on the weekend who was very polite, and asked me a question.

She prefaced it with saying she didn’t want to insult me, but had a question.

Of course I encouraged the question saying I was sure I would be fine with whatever she asked. She asked if I actually write the articles in the paper, or if I get them from a service or the Internet.

Fair question. I do write these. For real.

Often from the heart, and always from personal experience gained in my time as a trainer - 1998 to present day.

My wife proof reads them for me, and you can tell when I write them too late on Sunday night

for her to get a chance, because they inevitably have spelling or grammar errors.

I usually ask her as well, ‘Is this one any good?’

I tend to be hard on myself and want to give you the best. She is really great at saying something is weak, or should be re-written and when something is good. In many, many ways, I am a very lucky man! We celebrate 25 years this summer.

Allow me to be a little extra ‘real’ with you today.

I am in a bit of a sad mood tonight because we lost another member of our gym family this weekend. A young lady that used to work for us lost her life. The tough thing about having such a large gym family is that at some point, we lose someone. This year we have lost four.

All of them unexpected and tragic. We also have many members that have had new healthy babies, and many people that have regained a new lease on life with their new found health.

So how does this apply to you?

Well, it gets to the subject of ‘why be fit?’

As someone who nearly died recently, I can tell you that being healthy, (while not a guarantee by any stretch) is the best thing we can do to not only delay or avoid that final day, but to enjoy the time we have here.

I have spent the past 19 months broken since the crash, and I miss working out to my potential SO much!

I have made some strides forward and many steps backwards. I am excited to go for knee surgery this week to hopefully repair the final damaged piece from the accident. I have been working to go into the surgery as fit as I can manage given my limitations and work schedule.

Life is always going to hand us challenges. That’s the deal.

The question we must as is, ‘What can we do to prepare?’

What can you do to be the healthiest you can be, with the time you have, so that when you are handed a challenge (and you will be) you can

manage it the best possible way?

I am reading a really great book right now called Immunity to Change.

I just started it last week, so have a ways to go, but it is pretty exciting stuff!

The book talks about how we, as humans, need to understand that we are deeply rooted to hidden mindsets that create a natural but enforcing immunity to change. This is why your doctor may tell you that you have to exercise, but you still don’t (even though you know it could save or extend your life).

The principal foundation is, ‘What is not understood cannot be changed’ and this itself is why I read so many books - to learn, to grow, to improve and to pass along to you. It might even be why you are reading these articles. I will get back to you on this one when I have finished the book.

So yes, I do write these articles for you myself (for free, I do not get paid) and I am always pleased to hear when you gain something from them.

Why? Because it’s been aptly said that, ‘practice makes perfect’.

This is true whether you’re a plumber or cataract surgeon.

So I asked Stein how many cataracts he had performed. His answer - 50,000 over the last 30 years! That’s a lot of practice!

You say that, as a lay person, it’s easier said than done to find a first-class surgeon. I agree it’s never easy. But here’s a medical tip. If you’re fortunate enough to know a scrub nurse who hands doctors instruments day after day, ask her. You will never find a more reliable source.

Since prevention of cataracts is better than cure, wear sunglasses to decrease the effects of sunlight. Living close to the equator increases risk of cataracts. So does high altitude.

The people of Tibet have the highest rates of cataracts in the world. And be sure to use protective glasses for tennis and other sports.

What about the use of vitamins? The cornea and lens have the highest concentration of Vitamin C in the body. In one study those with low levels of C had 11 times greater risk of developing a cataract. So for years I’ve taken daily high doses of Vitamin C powder,

laser surgery.”

I asked him the logical question, “What type would you choose?” His quick reply, “Laser surgery!”

He added, “I’ve also used the laser procedure on the last 25 ophthalmologists.” I quickly

concluded what’s best for ophthalmologists is also good for the rest of us.

Fundraiser this weekend for Alzheimer’s disease

The Bronco Club of Red Deer is collaborating with the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada for a weekend long fundraising event.

Alzheimer’s disease is irreversible and destroys brain cells, according to the Alzheimer’s Society web site. The disease affects a person’s ability to understand, think, remember and communicate. Currently there is no known cure for Alzheimer’s disease, or a treatment that will stop the progression.

The event will begin July 28th at 4 p.m., which is open to the public, and will consist of a show ‘n shine, virtual reality games, pizza, and raffle tickets. The event takes place at the Carnival Cinemas parking lot.

The remainder of the weekend’s activities are for Bronco Round-Up Canada 2017 members only. As they will leave Red Deer from the Carnival Cinemas parking lot on Saturday at 10 a.m., for a poker rally, and end the day at the Kraay Family Farm for dinner.

Sunday events will begin at 10 a.m., as the Broncos will leave Red Deer from the Carnival Cinemas parking lot and go to a location where there will be a barbecue, and mud.

Organizer of the Bronco Round-Up Canada 2107, Warren Kitteringham said the event is very significant to him as his mother was recently diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

“It’s a combination of Ford Bronco’s, and the public,” Kitteringham added. “We’re having fun with Broncos.”

The Bronco Round-Up Canada 2017 has grown over the previous year, Kitteringham expects 50 people to be in attendance, compared to last year where there were 30 people at the event.

“The event is for those people who like cars. Come out a help support a great cause,” Kitteringham added, the events are a great opportunity for families to come out, and have a great night.

Lee Adamson takes the North American Pony Chuckwagon championship

This year’s winner of the 19th annual Westerner Days Red Deer Motors North American Pony Chuckwagon Championships was Lee Adamson. He was also the winner of the $2,500 Dash for Cash. The final races took place Sunday afternoon at Westerner Park.

“I’ve had good running times all week, but my barrels weren’t spectacular. I had to have a really good day and I think we did,” said Adamson, of Camrose, after a close race with fellow past champion chuckwagon racer Louis Johner of Mayerthorpe.

Johner came second overall after the five nights, while John Stott came third and Garry Thiel came fourth, making up the top four wagons overall of the five nights.

Johner ran fast all week and Adamson said he got his goal of beating him.

“He’s been around for so long and he’s been consistent as heck, and I really wasn’t concerned about winning the dash. If I could beat Louis that was kind of my goal,” he said.

The five-day chuckwagon event saw 48 wagons compete this year, with big crowds spectating throughout the week.

With consistent runs this past week, Adamson, who was sponsored by A-1

Rentals, said his horses got lots of run and bailed him out of lots of situations.

“It’s nice to have that to fall back on.”

Adamson has been doing chuckwagon races for 34 years now, and this year marks his fourth title. He said he’s now officially tied with his father, which he said feels pretty good.

And the chuckwagons continue to be a family affair, as his son races too, having taken over his grandfather’s hitch. It’s something the family does consistently together.

“We’re all over central and northern Alberta, and it starts the middle of May and we end the end of August, first part of September.”

Their next show is in Bruce, Alberta, and Adamson said what keeps him coming back is his passion for horses.

For Johner, who was sponsored by Wei’s Western Wear Ltd., he came second place overall in the chuckwagon races. He said he felt his run was good.

“I think the horses were just a little tired today, but I was really impressed to have three firsts out of five days and

I was really happy with them. I was quite proud of the horses,” he said.

Johner, who is 80-years-old, has been doing the sport for 48 years, and hopes to make it to that 50 year mark.

“I’ve got an extremely good barn boy this year. He’s extremely good and I think he will have a job another year,” he said.

And it’s not Johner’s first ride at Westerner Days. He’s won the championship twice.

Bucs cruise past Wolfpack to seal playoff spot

The Central Alberta Buccaneers are looking to find the extra gear as they cruise towards the AFL playoffs.

The squad returned to friendly confines of the MEGlobal Athletic Park, where they took on the visiting Calgary Wolfpack. The home team managed to shake off some early rust to come away with a 60-12 victory, which ensured a home playoff date on Aug. 12th.

Offensive tackle Vince Roth said the lopsided score isn’t necessarily indicative of the way the game played out.

“They brought effort but they were outgunned,” he said. “I have to give them credit for coming out hard. They caught us by surprise at the beginning - I don’t think we were expecting the fight they came out with. I think we came out softer then we should have. We were able to pull away but they put forth effort and I give them credit for that.”

The slow start is something Roth said the team hopes to eradicate with a tough matchup this Saturday in St. Albert against the Stars.

The upcoming game will decide third place in the AFL standings and would mean the difference between a home or away semi-final game.

“It is pretty big and we are calling it a playoff game,” Roth said. “Win or lose we are in the

playoffs - it is not an elimination game, but it has pretty big implications as far as where we travel. If we end up losing this game, we will finish in fourth and that means - granted we win the quarter final - we will be travelling to Fort McMurray for the semis. We would rather travel there for the final.”

Roth noted beating the Fort McMurray Monarchs in the final would be some poetic justice for the Bucs.

“We don’t forget history and everyone knows how last year went, so it would be nice to return the favour to Fort McMurray and go win a championship in their building,” he said.

Playing back at home is something that is important to the Bucs, and would be crucial in the playoffs.

“It was nice to get home and be in front of our fans again,” he said.

Thinking ahead when it comes to home projects If you are like most people I know, you are taking things easy for the summer and not worrying about interior renovations or improvements on your home.

Hopefully you have a cabin, lake lot or fabulous back deck to relax and soak up the summer heat.

I want your summer to be no more involved than fishing and perfecting your iced tea and home-made burger recipes; the weather will cool and those projects will still be patiently waiting for you to complete.

Although summer may not be the time to paint or replace walls (drywall dust in hot weather is not fun, trust me), some projects are obviously better tackled in warm weather such as roofing and windows.

If you can plan a season or two ahead and have these larger projects already ordered and scheduled you will be ahead of the game and will probably pay a discounted rate for being ahead of the game instead of paying premium prices now to get quick service.

This is true for most projects, buying or planning in the off-season is best and gives you some price flexibility and even some sales.

Paint sales often happen in the summer so stock up for fall when you see those sales happening. Get ready for those upcoming projects by looking for and taking advantage of seasonal items that are being cleared out.

Plan for next year’s fencing project this fall when those materials are being cleared out at the end of summer.

Buy air conditioning units when they are being cleared out in anticipation of next year’s heat wave – this way you won’t be scrambling next year to find one while everyone else is also looking for the same things.

Home improvement items can be expensive so it is a good practice to stock up on these things.

I buy light fixtures that don’t always need installing but if they are an incredible price I will haul them from place to place until I find the perfect spot for one of them.

Not that I have a storage locker full of plumbing and lighting but I have been known to have an extra fixture or two because it was too good of a deal to pass up! I find that the 30-minute rush trips

to home improvement stores DURING a project can become costly as they are bought in a rush with no option in place and you have to buy what is offered, no matter what the price is.

Planning can save you hundreds of dollars and save you a lot of anxiety.

So while you are out shopping for BBQ tools and strolling the aisles buy-

ing your kids a blow-up pool, keep your eyes open for possible sales on flooring and fixtures and take advantage!

You will be miles ahead for when the weather chills out and you want to start the next interior project and discover that you don’t need to make a last-minute stop before you can begin

to work on your home.

You will be patting yourself on the back remembering back in July when you snatched that killer deal on bathroom supplies and will be smiling as you begin your new bathroom reno.

Are you financially ready for home ownership?

Canadians are firm believers in home ownership. We see the long term benefits of paying down our own mortgage as compared to a landlords. Our homes become our largest assets and often factor into retirement planning. Here are a series of the extra costs you should consider before writing that offer.

Down payment and closing costs: The minimum down payment you have to have is 5%. In the case of a $300,000 home that is $15,000. If you are purchasing a home over $500,000 the down payment minimum increases. On top of that you have to have 1.5% of the purchase price for closing costs. In this case that is an additional $4,500. This will cover things like the legal fees, title insurance, tax adjustment and all the other expenses which you will incur just to get the mortgage to fund.

Banks these days really like to see some additional savings in case of anything adverse. Ideally you will have 10% of the purchase price in your account to demonstrate you are indeed ready.

Insurance: One cost few people account for is life, disability, critical illness and job loss insurance.

Life: There is a 100% chance that we are all going to die at some point. You need to make sure your loved ones are protected for this eventuality.

Disability: Disability is the number one reason of foreclosure in Canada so again you owe it to yourself to ensure your home is protected in case of this.

Critical illness: We have an amazing health care system here but even so there are significant costs if you are diagnosed with a life threatening disease. Sadly we all know too many people who have been laid low by serious illness to allow ourselves to naively assume it will never happen to us. Critical illness insurance covers you in case of a life threatening illness.

Job loss: Albertans more than most know how quickly the economy can turn and we can unexpectedly face a job loss. There is now an insurance

policy to protect you against that too.

Family coverage: You may want to consider insuring your children. A serious illness in a child can drop your income by half as one person ends up leaving work to take care of them. Of course there are the extra expenses while treatment is sought. In the case of the unimaginable, insurance allows you to cover costs and take some time from work. Even if your spouse does not work, having coverage for them should be considered.

If you all of a sudden have to cover costs of child care your savings can dry up quickly.

I am often told that people have sufficient coverage through employer but I respectfully challenge this. Most employers cover only one year’s salary and given how many Albertans lost their jobs in the last downturn this is clearly not a fail safe system. If you have a change in your health it can be very difficult to get coverage down the line. I am a big fan of third party insurance providers. Ones which are tied neither to your mortgage lender nor your employer.

Home upkeep and other monthly expenses: The other costs you have to be ready for is the

upkeep of said home. Are your able to handle the upkeep day-to-day or the larger expenses like a new furnace or hot water heater? I can assure you that when it is -35C you are going to need that furnace to work. You will now be responsible for property taxes and home insurance. Budget them in ahead of time.

Increase to mortgage payments: Another important consideration is the mortgage itself. At the end of the mortgage term you will sign into a new term. The rate may be considerably higher which in turn increase your mortgage payments.

Look carefully at your budget and do some forecasting to make sure you will be able to afford the mortgage payments if rates increase.

Some serious points of consideration for the smart Canadian here today. A home is the biggest asset and a mortgage the largest debt most of us will take on. Let’s make sure we are ready because we all know too many people life hit unexpectedly and wouldn’t you rather be ready than regretful?

The kids are more than safe at sea with Disney ALL ABOARD - Disney Cruise Lines has much to offer, but the security on board is top notch.

In May I embarked with my family on Disney Wonder with Disney Cruise Lines. I thought for sure this would be the top of the list thing to do with two toddlers in tow, both aged three. Like everyone taking their kids to Disney, you research everything about it. With myself, I was paranoid about security.

I have to admit, after all the cruising I’ve done, Disney Cruise Line is the utmost best cruiseline I’ve sailed with to date. I knew the Oceaneer Club and Lab was going to be a hit with the girls.

Disney Cruise Lines has many security features on board, however the wristbands, wave phones, and unique passwords were enough for the Club/ Lab for me to be comfortable enough on board to leave the children with the programs.

As a mother, I was more then just curious about the safety on board a Celebrity Cruises Caribbean Vacations

big ship with lots of people. How in the world could Disney pull off not losing a child in their kids programs?

They have security down! Upon embarkation, up until the evening, parents and guardians can bring their children down the Oceaneer Lab and Oceaneer Club to have a look around and register their children if they haven’t done so. What happens is that the child receives a unique wristband they must wear while in the club. I had it on mine the whole time as it’s equipped with a GPS system so they could see where your child is at all times. Also just keeping it on your toddler the whole time decreases the argument when they are required to wear it once they enter the program. When you drop the child off at the Oceaneer Lab or Club, the parent or guardian is not allowed (except during open house

hours which vary) to enter. The child holds their wristband to a post where it recognizes them, and off they go into the program. If the parent or guardian would like to stop by and check on the child, they can do so. Just inquire at the gate where the child is located in the secure area, and the parent can enter, find their child, and make sure everything is ok.

Another brilliant security feature are the wave phones. These phones are much like the old Motorola flat phones. These are in each stateroom and the phone number is the stateroom number. These phones have the ability to text and call another wave phone on the ship. They work only on the ship as well. After your child has been registered to the program, the Lab/Club has your phone number associated to the child. Take comfort in know-

ing that while you’re touring the ship, basking in the sun, or watching some entertainment, your child could easily say to a counsellor that they would like to leave. Instantly, the counsellor notes what the child wants, and out goes a signal to the wave phone. It will send you a text saying that your child is requesting the parent or guardian.

So off you go up to Deck 5 mid-ship.

You check into the desk and inquire.

There they will tell you where the child is located, and you enter to locate your child.

My last example of the many security features of the Lab/Club is the password. Let’s assume you enter the secure area and your child is asking to exit. At the beginning of the cruise you would have provided a unique password while registering your child.

As you wait to note that you are leaving

with your child, the child must exit by again holding their wristband up to the post, and the parent or guardian must provide the password before they open the secure door.

This Disney Cruise was more then a trip of a lifetime. It was an eye-opener to understand how many (and I only mentioned three) security features that Disney Cruise Lines has in order to make sure that the children are secure.

There are so many reason why Disney Cruise Lines is top in my books now on how they do things with every aspect of cruising. The most important thing however, is security of the children.

You can’t put a price on ensuring you child is safe, and overall, being happy while being secure.
