July is Marine Festival Month in Nanaimo To commemorate Canada 150 and kick off the month of July the City of Nanaimo has proclaimed the month of July as ‘Marine Festival Month.' In addition to the Canada 150 celebrations in Nanaimo, the Loyal Nanaimo Bathtub Society celebrated with a commemorative run 'Back to Vancouver' on Canada Day. The run was done to replicate the 1967 run from Nanaimo to Vancouver. Twelve tubs started but only five tubs made the rough crossing with the fastest one at two hours and 11 minutes. We then kicked off Marine Festival events July 7-9 with the 15th annual Nanaimo Save-On-Foods Dragonboat Festival. It was a weekend of fun for the entire family. Proceeds went to the Nanaimo Hospital Foundation and Nanaimo Community Hospice benefiting breast cancer patients. For the next event, Sunday, July 16, we celebrated the 33rd anniversary of the Nanaimo Child Development
Centre's Silly Boat Regatta. Fifty teams and thousands of spectators joined together for a spectacular day full of teamwork, camaraderie and good clean fun, all in support of a great cause. Every year the NCDC raises upward of $100,000 to run their programs supporting Nanaimo families. Finally, July 21-23, Nanaimo celebrates Canada 150 with the World Championship Bathtub Race and Bathtub Weekend. The weekend gets going Friday with wakeboard competitions, a huge Molson's beer garden and concerts at Maffeo Sutton Park. On Saturday, July 22, the action at

the park and Sway' A' Lana Lagoon continues with a full Kidz Zone and activities at the lagoon. Bring the kids to the Paradise Island Cheese Bathtub Weekend Bandshell for free concerts organized by Indie Entertainment. Sunday, you won’t want to miss the Nanaimo Idol finals at 2 p.m. All weekend the park is full of food trucks, vendors and Island artisans. We wrap things up Sunday with the Great International World Championship Bathtub Race. The excitement starts after 10 a.m. with the starting gun at 11 a.m. As many as 50 brave bathtub racers tackle a gruelling 36-nautical mile course on the Salish Sea in hopes of being first to ring the bell. The course can take between one hour and several hours to complete and both start and finish lines are in front of the park. Hope to see you down at Maffeo Sutton for some Nanaimo Marine Festival fun!

Communication vital to tub safety BY BOB SMITS This year, the Canada 150 Great International World Championship Bathtub Race will begin in Nanaimo harbour near Maffeo Sutton Park, and take a circuitous route past Gallows Point, around Entrance Island, around Maud Island, around Five Fingers Island and Gallows Point and back to the finish line in Nanaimo Harbour. Each year about 50 tubs take part in some thrilling and dangerous racing. To keep the tubs and the drivers safe, the Loyal Nanaimo Bathtub Society has an extensive Safety and Communications program. Each year we meet well in advance of the race, assess the conditions and ensure a plan is in place for a safe race. The organizations included in the race activities are the City of Nanaimo, the Canadian Coast Guard,
RCM-SAR, Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue, the Nanaimo Port Authority, the RCMP, St. John Ambulance, Nanaimo Amateur Radio Association and CFMETR. To co-ordinate all this activity requires a great deal of communication. All the tubs must be accompanied by an escort boat, to ensure the tub driver's safety. Each escort vessel must have a Marine VHF radio to communicate with Bathtub Control and the Coast Guard. In addition, a separate Bathtub Control station is set up on Gabriola Island to ensure communications with escort vessels all the way to the mouth of Nanoose Bay. Each tub must also pass various checkpoints, including Gallows Point, Entrance Island, Checkpoint Three (a CFMETR vessel moored just north of Maud Island), Checkpoint Four (just east of Imperieuse Rock), Checkpoint Five (Five Fingers Islands), and the
Big Tub at Gallows Point before entering the Harbour. Spotters and radio operators from the Nanaimo Amateur Radio Association, operate from each checkpoint.

The spotters and radio operators or “hams” are all volunteers who bring their own equipment for the task. The “hams” communicate through the club UHF repeater at Lost Lake, to provide links over the entire race course. All these activities are linked to Bathtub Control at the Coast Bastion Hotel. There, four or five radio operators monitor Marine VHF channels and stay in contact with escort vessels. It is vital that an escort vessel notifies Bathtub Control when a tub has
dropped out of the race so that extensive searches are not undertaken for tubs not accounted for. As each tub and escort passes a checkpoint, the “hams” notify Bathtub Control that the pair has passed that particular checkpoint so that bathtub trackers can update the status board that shows the location of every tub. The trackers at Bathtub Control ensure that they know when each tub has reached each checkpoint. This communications system, which connects all the participants in the
race, ensures that all the tubbers get back to the beach safely, and that we minimize the risks to the tubbers and everyone else on the water. The Coast Guard, RCMP, RCM SAR, Navy and Harbour Patrol vessels can all communicate with Bathtub Control to deal with problems on the water. The race simply couldn't happen without it. Bob Smits is communications and safety director for the Loyal Nanaimo Bathtub Society.

N
anaimo lost one of its biggest fans and supporters of bathtub racing. Tom Harris, who passed away at the age of 67 in Roche Harbor, Wash. on June 29, will be remembered and honoured by the Bathtub community, and the whole community of Nanaimo. The Harris group has faithfully sponsored a bathtub entry every year and had a winning tub in 2013 when Brandon Leigh was the winner of the Great International World Championship Bathtub Race. Tom also sponsored Bathtub weekend’s King Neptune Dance,
lending his Cadillac to transport King Neptune after he was crowned. That tradition continued until one year when the Nanaimo Hornets rugby team was riding around in the car and left a dead fish in the trunk for the whole weekend! Beyond being a supporter of the Bathtub race and so many other Nanaimo community events, Tom was a successful businessman, building the Harris Auto Group and Tom Harris Cellular. Nanaimo's Citizen of the Year in 2004, he received in 2012 the Queen Elizabeth II DiaBrandon Leigh, sponsored by Harris Auto Group, finished mond Jubilee Medal recognizing his service to the community and to first at the 2013 Great International World Championship Bathtub Race. Port Moody was one of our longest running races, a distance race running up Indian Arm and a warmup for The Great Race. Presently, there are 10 races in six locations during the summer months. In the past there have been as many as 13 races taking place in one year. We are hoping to add a circuit race at Kits Beach in Vancouver starting in 2018. Sanctioned racing can be a family affair, with par-
ents helping their children and other members of the family working as pit crew or helping to organize the race. It is an opportunity to learn to repair motors and fiberglass tubs. It is also a time for families and teams to socialize with each other and to share experiences and knowledge. Santioned racing has its rewards too. The tubbers race for points and at the end of the season the winners in each class are presented with championship trophies. For more information, visit www.bathtubbing. com.
