MAIN EVENT
AROUND TOWN
Taste of Abbotsford The heart of a community can be found in the kitchen - and given Abbotsford’s strong ties to local produce – it’s no wonder a food-focused summer event is on the menu.
The City of Abbotsford Economic Development team is in the midst of organizing the 2nd annual Taste of Abby event. From May 28 to June 3¸ residents will have the opportunity to learn about the bounty that is accessible to them, right in their own city. The weeklong event will feature special discounts and offerings from more than 50 local restaurants and businesses, as well as familyfriendly events including face painting and a mascot dance-off. Local firefighters will also be serving hot dogs by $2 donation to BC Children’s Hospital. Stemming from the ‘Farm to Table’ concept, Taste of Abby gives residents a glimpse into where their food comes from and how it’s made.
ROYAL CANADIAN FAMILY CIRCUS
“The Taste of Abby event is a great opportunity to showcase the diversity of food production in Abbotsford, educate the public on the economic impacts of purchasing locally produced products, and encourage customer traffic into local businesses,” says Parul Neufeld, Economic Development Officer, City of Abbotsford. “With so many of our local restaurants and grocery stores offering a wide variety of food sourced in the area, it only seemed right to also acknowledge their commitment to supporting local.”
include: Chef Nick Vacchiano of Lepp Farm Market, Chef Dion Brisson of Harvest Grill ‘n Greens, Chef Matthew Nichols of Restaurant 62, and Chef Jesse Thompson of Bow and Stern.
The Taste of Abby week will kick off with a local chef’s competition on Sunday, May 28 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Save-On-Foods on South Fraser Way. Four of Abbotsford’s amazing local chefs will each be partnered with a School District 34 student sous chef, as they compete for the title of “Taste of Abby Top Local Chef for 2017.” Competing Chefs
“We are grateful for the participation of all our local businesses, and we would like to thank our sponsors, the Abbotsford News, Country 107, Save-On-Foods, the Abbotsford School District for partnering with us this year for this great event.”

Chef Vikram Vij, who is also a cookbook author, television personality, and restaurant owner, will be one of the competition’s expert judges. The Taste of Abby initiative focuses on buying local and promoting local gems, all in an effort to nurture the community’s connection to food.

DISH CRÊPES: 2 1/4 cups warm milk 2 cups all-purpose flour 6 eggs 6 tablespoons butter, melted 1/4 cup granulated sugar 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 cup vegetable oil MASCARPONE CREAM: 2 1/2 cups whipping cream (35%) 1 1/4 cup mascarpone cheese, 275 gm container 5 tablespoons liquid honey 1 tablespoon vanilla 1/4 cup frozen orange juice concentrate 2 cups raspberries ASSEMBLY: Set aside a perfect crêpe for the top layer, as well as a ¼ cup of topping for garnish. Place one crêpe on a cake plate. Spread with a thin layer of cream mixture, using an offset spatula to spread cream to edges of crepe evenly. You’ll need approximately ¼ cup per layer for 20 layers, adjust the amount of filling per layer accordingly to how many crêpes you want to use. Repeat layering with remaining crêpes and cream mixture. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate until set, about 2 hours. Just before serving, spread reserved cream mixture in the middle of top of cake. Mound remaining raspberries over the top. Dust with icing sugar, if you wish.cover with wrap and refrigerate.
Raspberry Orange Crepe Cake Canadian Living magazine has been arriving in my mailbox for my 35 years of married life. While admiring the beautiful cover photo of last month’s stacked crepe cake, I immediately dismissed it as being “too fussy.” However, a brave friend lacking my fear of fancy desserts shared a delicious slice of success with me, and I was so inspired by the lovely taste and texture that I decided to tackle it myself. I feared a lopsided ‘Pinterest fail’ trying to recreate it, but the “oohs and aahs” of everyone in the office as I brought it in for photos was proof that I had a winner on my hands! If you love to cook breakfast but the
thought of baking and decorating fancy cakes sends shivers of fear up your spine, then this layer of crepes smothered in whipping cream/mascarpone/raspberry deliciousness is the perfect recipe for you! It takes a bit of time to cook the crepes, but once you’ve made them the rest is easy to assemble. It doesn’t matter if some of the crepes aren’t perfect or have holes in them as the filling covers all the mistakes: I’ll admit taking scissors to trim edges that weren’t perfectly round. Be prepared to accept the compliments that are sure to come your way as you share this beautiful dessert at your family table.

The Farmer and the Foodie Feeding my family has always brought me joy, but I know not everyone shares my love of cooking. Early on I made my sons promise that they would never utter the phrase to whoever cooked for them “it’s good, but it doesn’t taste like my mom’s.” Happily, our children and spouses all share a love of great food, and we can spend endless hours discussing great meals or new recipe ideas. My childhood was that of a typical farm kid - Dad ran the farm while Mom raised seven children, cooked from scratch, maintained a huge vegetable garden and preserved for winter. She enjoyed digging in the dirt more than being in the kitchen so the required daily meals and three coffee breaks must have been energy draining. While she never loved cooking, she loved providing for her family, and even with little money to spare we never lacked for hearty, home-cooked fare. With great shame, I admit that I often
traded her hand-pinched apple pastries for my friend’s cellophane-wrapped Ding-Dongs. However, my mother-in-law loved cooking, entertaining and garnishing. She enjoyed experimenting with new dishes, often adding a unique twist which made them nearly impossible to replicate. In her kitchen, I learned to season generously, for recipe measurements were merely suggestions, and she instinctively knew just what to add to create delicious results. While both mothers are still with us, it saddens me that they no longer recall any of their culinary adventures. This Mother’s Day, I’m grateful for two moms, so very different from each other but who Treat M both shaped my to om joy of sharing Marka Brunc et home-cooked h Buf Sunda f food with those y , May et Seatin 14 g is li Ca I love. ll us mited you to reser ,

TODAY’S
Celebrate MOM
TRENDS
Celebrate mom with fresh spring looks that are full of colour and pattern. Red, white and navy are big this season and are being showcased in everything from pencil skirts and maxi dresses to crop pants and blazers.
The shades are showing up in solid blocks or mixed together in patterns, including stripes, florals and abstract designs. Vibrant shades of red are also being used in accessories, such as purses and scarves, to add a pop of colour to an otherwise-neutral outfit. But spring/summer 2017 isn’t just about the bold. Pretty pastels, including an oh-so-romantic rose-blush shade, are also popular this season. A feminine, flowy dress is the perfect complement to a spring wedding or garden party. Be bold or play it subtle – the choice is up to you!

Timeless decor tips for your child’s bedroom A parent’s schedule is nothing short of hectic. Between work, daycare, groceries and homework, interior decoration often finds itself quite low on the list of parental priorities. Have you been meaning to redesign your child’s bedroom? To help get those creative juices flowing, here are design tips for a functional and attractive room that’ll stand the test of time.
where flying toys and sticky fingers are the norm. While savings are always on a parent’s mind, higher-end furniture can be seen as an investment rather than an expense. For an elegant design that will hold up for years, choose sturdy, multifunctional pieces such as:
FURNITURE
• A bench that doubles as a storage unit
There’s no denying it: low-end furniture wears and breaks faster than quality furniture —especially in a child’s bedroom,
• A bed with built-in drawers
LIFE
trains and princesses are fun and appealing, it’s best to opt for an age-appropriate design that you won’t have to completely overhaul every year. So, when your child pleads for a Dora the Explorer-themed bedroom, keep in mind that she’ll probably be begging for something entirely different next month.
• A high-rise bed with desk space underneath
It’s all about compromise! While taking into account your little one’s strongest interests and preferences, suggest a more general — but nonetheless fun — theme such as nature, animals, sports or space.
• A desk equipped with shelving

COLOUR SCHEMES
Kids grow up fast and their tastes change even faster. Think twice before buying bedding or curtains covered with your child’s favourite cartoon character. While
Thinking long-term about your child’s bedroom means choosing a colour scheme that isn’t strongly associated with a specific age or gender. In other words, avoid making cotton candy pink or baby boy blue the room’s main hue. Instead, choose a neutral shade for the walls and spice up the space with brightly coloured or uniquely patterned accessories. If your child’s preferences change every year, showcase their new favourite things with wall art, throw pillows or light fixtures. You’ll find it’s a lot more cost-effective than repainting the whole room!

When we devour a sweet dessert, a signal is sent to the cerebral cortex of the brain and the brain’s reward system is activated. The brain’s reward system is a series of chemical and electrical pathways that lead our subconscious mind to make an association between what we are consuming and the satisfying feeling produced after consuming it. A high consumption of sugar increases the neurotransmitter (chemical messenger in the brain), called dopamine. When dopamine is released, you feel uplifted and rewarded initially but about 1-2 hours later you may notice yourself feeling down, foggy, drowsy and irritable. If you keep pushing the brain to release dopamine with more sugar, the brain responds by down regulating dopamine receptors to stop producing natural dopamine. This leads to symptoms of lethargy, lack of motivation and drive. Frequent high consumption of sugar results in tolerance and withdrawal, which are the hallmarks of addiction. Addiction is a strong word but helps us realize the power certain foods can have on our brain. You may crave more sugar to give you the same heightened feeling after developing a tolerance and will feel withdrawal symptoms such as fatigue, lethargy, low mood and headaches if sugar is not consumed in these amounts. Falling into the sugar addiction cycle can lead to a host of health problems – obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, depression and poor sleep.
Excess glucose also causes inflammation in the brain and can react with protein in the brain causing nerve cell membranes to become thicker, slowing communication between nerve cells and affecting the way you feel. Studies have found that high sugar consumption has been implicated in aggressive behaviour, anxiety, hyperactivity, depression, eating disorders and fatigue.
Dietary intervention from a Registered Dietitian can help you control your blood sugars and nourish your brain. Food is information for the brain - Eat well to feel well!

CARE
Choosing the right care home A care home should be welcoming, supportive and respectful of your loved one’s needs, preferences and choices. Without guidance and support, transitioning a loved one to a care home can be an overwhelming responsibility. Below are 5 steps to get you started.
1. Research In addition to searching homes online, or visiting homes in your neighbourhood, ask friends and family for recommendations. Reputable, caring homes are typically preceded by positive word of mouth within the local community.
2. Call the homes Call the homes and share your loved one’s story. Whoever you talk to should be able to recommend homes within their community that may be best suited to your loved one’s needs and preferences.
3. Book a tour Nothing beats experiencing a home in person. Book a tour to experience the atmosphere of the home — from the location and interior décor to the
personalities of the residents and staff. Ensure that the atmosphere feels right for your loved one.
4. Ask questions The tour is your opportunity for one-onone time with a caregiver of the home. Ask all the questions you can think of to ease your mind. Don’t know what to ask? Refer to these questions as a starting point. • Does the home offer the level of care my loved one needs? • How are residents preferences evaluated?
needs
and
• Do staff respond quickly to a resident’s call for assistance? • Is a nurse available 24/7? • Does the home offer a variety of recreational activities? • Are activities personalized to the residents’ individual interests? • Does the home offer a variety of food choices as part of their culinary program?
• Are there private areas for residents to visit with family?
• Can residents decorate their rooms with personal items?
• Are there safe, secure outdoor areas for residents?
• Do the bedrooms include accessible storage for personal items?
• Can wheelchairs and walkers easily move around the home?
• Are bathrooms conveniently located near bedrooms?
Once you’ve chosen the home that suits your loved one best, the staff will be able to walk you through the next steps – what is needed from you and when. They are there to support you; take advantage of their experience and knowledge.
• Are there handrails in hallways and stairwells and grab bars in bathrooms?

• Is the interior and exterior of the home clean and well cared for?
