DID YYOU KNOW? The 1891 subdivision plan for the Village of Abbotsford showed that streets running east to west were named for trees. Streets running north to south seemed to have been named for the children of an unknown pioneer family: Mary, Victor, Pauline, Oscar, Gladys, Cyril, Horace, Florence, and James.

Road to Rockin’ River Talent Search offers the chance to open for country music’s biggest stars Picture this: standing onstage in front of a cheering crowd and belting out a couple of hit country songs ahead of your favourite band. Applications for the second annual Road to Rockin’ River Talent Search are now open, giving aspiring BC vocalists the chance to make that dream a reality. The eight-week province-wide singing competition will be hosted at various venues throughout BC until June 30, before finalists go head-tohead on August 3 for the top spot and ultimate prize: opening for The Band Perry and Brett Kissel on August 5 at the Rockin’ River Music Festival in Merritt. For each qualification night there will be three independent judges, including Becca Hess from Rockin River, Curtis Pope from 107.1 Country FM, and local music fanatic Tom Richardson. The judges will
base their scores on vocal ability, song choice, stage presence and rapport with the audience. This year, the competition is also open to duos and trio vocalist groups.
“Although the audience will not be casting a vote, by cheering loud for their favourite artist, they can definitely influence our judges,” says Paul Esposito Jr., of Finnegan’s Pub Abbotsford.

JULIE + GINA’S TOP SELECTS
RECIPE PAIRING: CHARDONNAY 13.5% Alc/Vol
LINE 39
DIRECTIONS: 1. Mix the ricotta and Parmesan cheeses, fresh basil and lemon zest together, add ½ tsp. salt and and a good dash of pepper. 2. Season the salmon fillets with salt and pepper to taste, lay them down with the skin side up (skin now removed). Top with the ricotta mixture, three spears of asparagus and starting with the wide end, roll them up and place them on a parchment paper lined baking sheet with the seam side down.
Asparagus, Basil and Ricotta Stuffed Salmon Rolls with Lemon Butter Sauce
3. Bake in a preheated 425F until the salmon is just cooked, about 1014 minutes. 4. Meanwhile, add diced shallot and broth or wine to a shallow saucepan and simmer until all liquid is almost completely reduced, approximately 2 tablespoons or so of liquid left. Take off the heat and add butter cubes, one at a time until melted before adding the next one. If necessary, return pan to lowest heat until butter is all incorporated but swirling in the cold butter will naturally thicken the sauce. Squeeze half a lemon into the sauce, and add salt and pepper to taste.
It’s BC Wild Salmon season and these beautiful rolls stuffed with local asparagus are a delicious treat to serve at a dinner party, yet easy enough to make for a weeknight dinner. Don’t fear the stuffing and rolling, it comes together very easily and a little filling oozing out of the sides only adds to it’s rustic appeal. INGREDIENTS:
Zest of half a lemon
4 (5 ounce) BC Wild salmon fillets, skins removed (this is a great way to use the tapered tail end)
1/2 pound asparagus, pencil sized spears, trimmed slightly longer than width of fillet (3 per fillet)
Salt and pepper to taste
1 small shallot, finely diced, about ¼ cup
1 ¼ cup ricotta cheese (about 375 gm)
½ cup white wine or chicken broth
1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
4 Tbsp. cold butter, cubed
2 tablespoons fresh basil, chopped

Dad likes to look good too, so why not think about stepping up his style this Father’s Day. You can’t go wrong with a classic button-down shirt. What used to be a purely functional item of clothing has now evolved into a styledefining garment. Try a subtle print – such as small polka dots or paisley – or something more bold,
such as always-on-trend plaid, stripes or even florals. Thinking about a new watch for Dad? A timepiece that combines both design and technology makes a great gift. From classic casual to watches with all the bells and whistles, there’s a perfect one for Dad. But you don’t need to be that extravagant. Even a cool pair of dress socks in a fun pattern – bicycles, anyone? – can help dad jazz up his wardrobe.

The sunny season is finally back! With its high temperatures and long, clear days, summer is the perfect time of year to tackle those outstanding tasks that you’ve been “meaning” to get around to. Take advantage of the pleasant days ahead to accomplish these six home renovation projects.
1. REPAVE THE DRIVEWAY If your driveway is in (very) bad condition and showing signs of wear like cracks or crevasses, it’s high time to take action. Did you know that summer is the best season to repave? Indeed, high outdoor temperatures are necessary to achieve optimal results that will stand the test of time. So, give your driveway some muchneeded attention this summer!
2. REPAIR THE ROOF
It’s a fact: bad weather (rain, wind, snow, ice, etc.) can cause serious damage to your roof. This summer, enlist the help of a professional to determine if your roof is in need of repairs (or a complete overhaul). Have your roofer check for damaged or missing shingles, mould, clogged gutters, etc. Regular inspections are essential to prevent water leaks and other inconveniences that can result from poor roof maintenance.
3. REPLACE THE WINDOWS AND DOORS
Are you all too familiar with infiltration (water or air) or insulation problems? If your windows and doors have served their time, or if you simply wish to modify the look of your home with newer units, keep in mind that summer is the ideal time to replace them. In addition to not having to worry about heat loss, you won’t have to sacrifice home comfort during the installation
UNGER
APPLIANCE & FURNITURE
phase since outside temperatures are (almost) always agreeable at this time of year. If your windows and doors don’t need replacing, take advantage of the warmer days to make them sparkle.
4. REFRESH YOUR HOME’S FACADE Is your home’s facade looking a little lacklustre these days? This summer, take the opportunity to give it a well overdue facelift! If you don’t have the budget for major renovation work, a simple highpressure cleaning and a fresh coat of paint can significantly rejuvenate the look of your humble abode.
5. RESTORE YOUR DECK Is your deck a little on the tattered side? Make it look as good as new with a fresh coat of stain or varnish. For longer lasting results, always opt for a special weatherresistant product. Is your deck damaged beyond repair? Why not take advantage of the beautiful weather to build a brand new one?
6. REVAMP THE LANDSCAPING When it comes to working on your yard, pleasant summer weather is your greatest ally. Does your home’s landscaping leave a lot to be desired? Embellish your outdoor space by planting colourful flowers, trimming your hedges, building a stone walkway, etc. In short, take advantage of the summer months to transform your yard into that beautiful oasis you’ve been dreaming of!

Call to Schedule Appointment! 778-240-5951 We have all come across the term “Gluten-free” while grocery shopping or dining out - the occurrence is widespread. So what is gluten and what is all the hype around going gluten-free? Gluten is an insoluble protein composite consisting of two proteins (glutenin and gliadin) and is found in certain grains particularly wheat, barley, and rye. It has been well documented for years that a gluten-free diet has been recommended for people with wheat allergy and Celiacs disease (an inherited disease in which gluten consumption may cause inflammation of the lining of the small intestine, leading to gastrointestinal discomfort, nutrient malabsorption and bone loss). New research is showing that a large population of people can now become sensitive to gluten without having Celiacs disease. People with ‘Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity’ may also experience bloating, digestive disturbances, fatigue, headaches and joint pain after gluten is consumed. We are all aware of the gastrointestinal side effects after eating gluten. Recent research has now focused on the effects of gluten consumption on the brain. Partially digested gluten forms proteins (called gliadorphins – also known as gluteomorphins), which react with opium receptors in the brain mimicking the effects of opiate drugs like morphine and heroin. These compounds affect the temporal lobe area of the brain associated with speech and hearing comprehension.
gut and the brain (the gut brain axis) and signals from the gut to the brain can be inflammatory in nature. Improperly digested gluten can trigger the immune system causing inflammation in the gut. Inflammation in the gut is linked to inflammation in the brain, causing one to feel fatigued, cloudy and give symptoms of anxiety and depression as well as other behavioral and mental problems.
