Paint your home’s exterior like a pro P ainting is an inexpensive way to transform just about any space. Many people paint the interiors of their homes, but home exteriors also can undergo dramatic makeovers with fresh coats of paint.

Timing the job right and heeding some tips from professionals and do-it-yourselfers who have tread the painting path before you can make the job go smoothly.

Consider the time of year

Consider local weather patterns and forecasts when planning an exterior painting project.

Choose a time of year when there is little rain and low humidity.

Keep in mind that the paint will require a couple of days to dry completely and cure, and that can be difficult in damp weather. Don’t hamper the final outcome with poor timing.

Prepare the painting surfaces Resist the tempta-

tion to start painting straight away. Paint may not adhere to unprepared surfaces, and dirt and other debris may show through and mar the finished product.

Repainting a home’s exterior will likely involve removing peeling or chipping paint prior to making your first strokes.

Wear protective gear when scraping, sanding or brushing old paint, as such tasks can generate dust that can be dangerous to inhale, particularly if the old paint contains lead. Employ a chlorine bleach solution to kill any mildew and to scrub any dirt from the house.

In addition, repair any cracks or imperfections.

For example, if you’re painting stucco, you may have to fill in any pitting or holes. Use this opportunity to inspect caulking around windows and doors. Recaulk as needed to seal up drafty areas or those that may cause water infiltration prior to painting.

Prime and cover stains

It may be a little extra work, but apply a quality primer as the first coat to hide any imperfections, such as wood knots or discoloration from weathering. Primer provides a smooth, even

surface upon which to put your paint colour.

Once you have applied the primer, test your paint colour in a small, inconspicuous spot to see how the colour looks in the daylight. You do not want to paint the entire home only to find out you dislike the colour.

Try these painting techniques

Rent a paint sprayer for large surface areas.

The sprayer will produce a more uniform application and is less time-consuming than painting everything with a brush or roller. Make

sure you’ve chosen a high-quality paint, as the added expense is worth it if the paint lasts longer and coats more evenly.

Also, if you have purchased multiple cans of paint, mix them all in one large bucket to ensure the same colour; otherwise, the colours may not match perfectly.

The experts at HGTV recommend working your way from top to bottom in a smooth, controlled manner, overlapping each stroke by eight inches. Trim and hardto-reach areas should be left for brush work so you can maintain control over your tools.

If you are painting areas like steps or staircases, consider adding a little fine-grain sand to the paint to improve traction, as paint can be slippery when wet.

Salmonella is ‘no yolk’ when raising backyard chickens

A growing interest in raising chickens has enabled coops and nesting birds to spring up in neighbourhoods one would not typically associate with chickens. Sometimes dubbed “urban homesteading” or “urban farming,” these homegrown operations enable people to enjoy fresh eggs from the comfort of home.

Henhouses are just another extension of methods to reap the benefits of fresh, local and non-factory-produced foods. Although advocates insist that raising chickens on a small scale makes the birds less likely to carry disease than factory-farmed chickens, anyone raising chickens needs to be aware of the potential for disease — particularly salmonella.

Also, it’s important to care for chickens in a

manner that is humane and in line with local laws.

What is salmonella?

Salmonella is a common bacteria that lives in the intestinal tract of humans, other mammals and some birds, including chickens.

The illness causes diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps between 12 and 72 hours after infection and can last between four and seven days.

Salmonella can cause death when not properly treated with antibiotics.

Although humans cannot catch salmonella from chickens the way one would contract a cold, they can catch it through handling or consuming eggs of infected birds. The rural newsletter and farming resource Grit says salmonella can then be transmitted to humans who eat improperly cooked meat or eggs from infected birds or from putting their hands in your mouths

after touching chickens or eggs that have come in contact with contaminated rodent or chicken feces.

The elderly, people with weakened immune systems and young children are at the highest risk for salmonella infection than others.

Children who help gather eggs and do not thoroughly wash their hands afterward can be at increased risk.

Maintaining clean conditions and routinely inspecting chickens for good health can help lower the risk of salmonella infection. Chicks and adult chickens that have salmonella may produce loose yellow or green droppings; have a drop in egg production, increased thirst and decreased feed consumption; and show signs of weight loss.

Look for rodents in the henhouse, as infected mice or other small rodents may transmit

salmonella as well.

Chickens also need safe, roomy clean conditions to remain healthy and content.

Some experts warn against washing eggs as a preventative method.

According to a report written by Diane Schive-

ra, an organic livestock specialist for the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association, thoroughly cleaning egg shells can remove a protective “bloom” that prevents bacteria from entering eggs.

Eggs shouldn’t be scrubbed, but some suggest a warm water rinse that will push dirt away from the shell’s pores. Old eggs are more susceptible to bacteria penetration. Storing eggs at room temperature may cause them to degrade faster.

Once eggs are gathered, individuals should wash their hands and make sure the eggs are chilled. Salmonella can be prevented in backyard chicken coops. Plus, it’s important to note that risk of infection is very small. The American Egg Board’s Egg Safety reference says an average consumer might encounter a contaminated egg once every 84 years.

Composite decking can be a smart choice

ecks add character and functionality to a home, increasing outdoor entertaining space and oftentimes improving the resale value of a home.

Homeowners have various options when choosing decking materials, but one such option, composite decking, is growing in popularity.

Decks used to primarily be made from pressure-treated lumber.

While lumber remains a popular material, more and more homeowners are opting for composite decking products.

As anyone who has pressure-washed, stained and sealed wood decks can attest, such spaces require lots of upkeep to look new year after year.

Composite decks require much less maintenance, making them highly attractive to homeowners who would rather spend time using their decks instead of maintaining them.

Composite decking is any type of decking material that is formulated from different recycled materials. The majority

As composite decks do not rot away and are long-lasting, they will not need to be replaced frequently, which is another eco-friendly benefit.

When comparing composite decking brands, look mainly at the colours, materials used in the composition and the fastening systems.

Many are fastened with regular deck screws.

The newer systems have channels for hidden fastening, and the composite deck tiles snap into place.

Composite decks do have a few drawbacks.

They can be expensive — nearly double the initial cost of wood decks. And although they don’t rot, composite planks can scratch. Without refinishing, damaged boards will need to be replaced.

Harsh chemicals may fade colour and damage the composite materials, so caution is needed.

Problems that can lead to lawn damage oline and fertilizer spills and pesticide applications in high concentrations can cause the lawn to yellow or brown in spots.

Carefully refill lawnmower gas tanks and fertilizer spreaders on the sidewalk or driveway to avoid overflow onto the lawn.

If spills occur, flood the area promptly with water to dilute.

• Foot traffic: Lawns can take a pounding from foot traffic, leading to compaction and spots of dead lawn. Try to redirect the traffic elsewhere to give worn down areas a break. Aeration can relieve soil compaction. If a certain area has become the de facto pathway, install a paver, gravel or concrete walkway in that spot.

• Debris: Leaving a tool, kids’ toys, piece of wood, or any debris on the lawn can quickly suffocate the grass beneath and cause the lawn to die quickly. Make sure that no items are left on the lawn for an extended period of time.

• Mowing patterns: Running the mower in

the same pattern over and over can cause ruts in the grass that lead to damage, so avoid mowing in the same direction on consecutive cuts. Avoid mowing on very hot days or when the lawn is soggy. Both can cause tracks to form in the lawn.

• Mowers: Dull lawn mower blades can damage lawns, as can mowing too fast. Grass blades can be torn, snapped and more, resulting in brown spots.

• Wildlife: Animals and insects can destroy turf roots. Animals or insects may feed on the grass from underneath its surface, compromising the lawn’s ability to procure nutrients and water.

Animals like moles may feed on grubs in the lawn, and treating for grubs can alleviate torn-up turf.

Lawns can be hearty, but they’re also highly susceptible to damage.

Even seemingly harmless things can compromise the integrity of a lawn.

How to streamline household cleaning

ravel down the cleaning aisle of a neighbourhood store and you will be met with product after product designed for specialized cleaning.

There are sprays for windows, cleansers for electronics, carpet-cleaning foams, and scouring solutions for tubs and showers. Although many of these are effective, the average person can rely on just one cleaning aid for a wide variety of tasks: vinegar.

Vinegar is a versatile product that can be used in everything from cooking to pickling to preserving foods to household cleaning. Vinegar is made by two distinct biological processes, offers The Vinegar Institute. Via fermentation, yeast will first change the natural sugars in the vinegar-to-be material solution into alcohol.

The second process involves a group of bacteria called “acetobacter,” which convert the alcohol into an acid. Vinegar can be made from any fruit or natural material contain-

ing sugar.

For the purpose of generalized cleaning, white vinegar is the most common type used and is typically made from corn. Utilizing vinegar around the house is quite simple, and can be used in various ways around the house.

• Remove lime buildup. Vinegar is good for cleaning faucets and showerheads. Make a paste of one teaspoon of vinegar and two tablespoons of salt. Apply to sink fixtures and rub with a cloth. Fill a plastic baggie with vinegar and attach to the showerhead with a rubber band. Let sit a few hours to over-

night and then rinse away the mineral deposits.

• Brighten laundry.

Add 1⁄2 cup white vinegar to the wash cycle.

It will help loosen stains and brighten clothing. An added benefit is the acid will reduce static cling.

• Disinfect cutting boards. Give cutting boards an extra cleaning by spraying them with straight vinegar, then rinsing to clean.

• Clean the disposal.

Make sure food residue doesn’t clog garbage disposals and lead to odor.

Mix vinegar and baking soda in the drain and allow the bubbling action to remove built-up res-

idue. Use a scrub brush for extra scouring.

• Get streak-free windows. Mix a 50-50 solution of vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Use to clean windows and other glass surfaces. Wipe away with a microfiber cleaning cloth so no lint is left behind.

• Eradicate pet odour.

Pour a little bit of vinegar into an empty litter box.

Let stand for around 20 minutes, then rinse with cold water. Vinegar also can be used to blot up pet stains on the carpet. Just test color-fastness in an inconspicuous area first.

• Banish water stains.

Fix water stains and rings on wood furniture by mixing equal parts vinegar and olive oil. Use a soft cleaning cloth moving in the direction of the wood grain. Polish using a clean cloth.

Vinegar can be used all around the house — these were just a few of the dozens of ways to rely on vinegar. Just steer clear of using it on natural stone and marble, as the acid could cause damage.

How to plant a tree for successful growth

Outdoor projects often top homeowners’ to-do lists in spring and summer, with gardens and landscapes taking centre stage. Planting more trees around the yard is one popular project that can improve property value and benefit the environment.

Why plant trees? There are plenty of reasons to plant trees. Trees provide a natural form of shade, reducing air temperature by blocking the sun’s rays. This can reduce reliance on air conditioning systems and make it more comfortable to spend time outdoors during the summer.

Trees absorb and block noise and reduce

glare. They also can trap dust, pollen and smoke.

Trees also absorb carbon dioxide and potentially harmful gasses from the air. One large tree can supply a day’s worth of oxygen for as many as four people, while also storing 13 pounds of carbon per year.

Getting started

Visit a garden centre or nursery and select a tree that will be hardy in your planting zone.

Choosing native trees can increases the likelihood that the new tree will adapt to its surroundings.

Also, inspect trees to determine if they’re healthy before taking them home.

Look for evidence of root girdling, which occurs when the roots circle around the perimeter of the container and surround the trunk. Trees should not have any dead

or dormant branches.

The DIY Network suggests locating the tree where it can thrive. This means selecting a spot that can make it easier for the tree to grow tall and wide. Avoid planting near the house, where roots can crack concrete or asphalt, and always plant away from underground pipes.

Planting the tree

Now it is time to amend the soil. It’s not enough to enrich only the soil in the hole where the tree will be placed. Move out into a circular area beyond where the roots will start so that roots can expand and properly anchor the tree.

The next method of success is to ensure that the tree has a large enough hole to contain the existing root ball and allow for roots to

grow and expand. Better Homes and Gardens experts say to prepare a hole that is two to three times as wide as the root ball of the tree.

Treat the root ball gently. If the roots are wrapped in burlap, remove the burlap or push it to the bottom of the hole. Backfill the hole with soil and check that the tree is straight.

Stake the tree to help it stay upright and straight until the roots anchor it more effectively. A layer of mulch around the base of the tree can prevent weeds and reduce water loss.

Water daily for several weeks until the roots have fanned out. It’s best to leave trees be for the first growing season, only removing broken or diseased limbs. Resist pruning and shaping until the tree has survived its first growing season.
