Yoga therapy designed specifically for cancer survivors

One Central Alberta woman has combined her passion for yoga and her career as a registered nurse at the Central Alberta Cancer Centre to enrich the lives of others.

Two years ago, Registered Nurse Robin Nicholas, owner/operator of The Nest Yoga + Yoga Therapy, took her yoga training in order to bring Yoga Thrive to Red Deer.

Developed at the University of Calgary and by Dr. Nicole Culos-Reed, Yoga Thrive is a therapeutic yoga program for cancer survivors. Nicholas, owner/operator of The Nest Yoga + Yoga Therapy, brought the unique program to the City.

“It’s a free program and I get direct referrals from the cancer centre,” she said. “I wanted it to be a community project so I have always asked different groups to donate the space for it. Everyone I’ve asked has been amazing and they have been really accommodating.”

The programs are pre-registered and normally run for about eight weeks.

“I started out with five ladies and most of those ladies have carried through to every session,” said Nicholas. “There are no limitations as to how many times you can come and you can bring a support person as well. There are people in the class who are undergoing treatment, who have been through treatment and who are carrying on with their lives a year or two later, but still want to come to the program because they feel such a connection to the people that are there.”

She added of course there are the benefits of yoga that the cancer survivors get to experience like an increase of motion, building strength and helping with balance, but there is also something amazing that happens in each class.

“It’s the most incredible part. I wanted to provide a space where they can connect with people who are going through a like situation,” said Nicholas. “The most incredible thing is sitting there, watching them - there is this space that’s created that is really safe where for maybe years these people have been going through painful diagnostics, surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation and their whole lives have become about appointments - they have become a patient - and all of a sudden they are in this space where they can come and just be themselves and they feel really free. I see them as people and not patients.

“It’s the one place where they don’t have to have this mask of, ‘I need to get strong, I need to get through this’. They can come and if they want to lay on their mat and cry the whole time, they can do that. It’s amazing.”

The classes are not only therapeutic but functional as well.

“We talk about breathing tools and things to help them get through painful procedures. There’s lots of relaxation and guided meditation. We do some massage as well,” said Nicholas, adding the feedback for the program is positive. “They just love being there and they are very grateful and thankful they can come.”

Meanwhile, Nicholas said she is always looking for space to hold her program and she is open to hearing from anyone willing to donate that space.

DIGITAL EYE STRAIN

The Alberta Association of Optometrists commissioned a survey about digital eye strain at the end of April, and the results were concerning.

Data shows that 71% of Alberta adults are experiencing symptoms of digital eye strain as a result of using digital devices, and that people aren’t taking the necessary steps that could help to alleviate symptoms.

Dr. Trent Allred, optometrist at Doctor’s Eyecare in Red Deer said there are a lot more college students who are staring at a screen that experience that flicker effect.

“It’s not a steady image. It looks like a steady image but it’s not, it’s really flickering fast enough that it looks like a steady image. It creates strain, and then there’s the glare off of screens depending on the person and their

pupil size,” said Allred.

From the screens of phones and computers, more and more people are getting tired eyes at the end of a long work day, which can cause symptoms of headaches and dry or tired eyes, which people often sleep off and are good for the next day.

“We try to prescribe lenses when appropriate. Sometimes lenses aren’t appropriate, but there are lenses out there that are designed to take away strain,” he said.

Allred said it’s like a computer vision syndrome, a new diagnosis in today’s digital world.

He said the strain is caused by people not blinking as much when looking at a computer, causing a person’s eyes to get dryer. “If we’re reading a book with print or a target that’s steady we seem to blink more, and blinking is moving the tears across the windshield.”

He said anyone over 40 usually needs some type of reading glasses.

With the majority of people working in fluorescent-lit offices, it’s about making sure it’s not too much or having the computer screen angled off to a degree where you’re not getting as much reflection. He said it’s also good to make sure you’re sitting a little higher than eye level.

Relay for Life set for June 10th at CrossRoads Church

Hit the track for a terrific cause this month, as the annual Canadian Cancer Society ‘Central Alberta Relay for Life’ is set for June 10th at CrossRoads Church.

The event kicks off at noon and runs through to midnight.

According to the web site, Relay For Life is indeed a festival-like fundraising event where team members take turns walking around a track or designated path.

“Each team taking part is asked to have at least one member on the track at all times to symbolize the ongoing fight against cancer.

“On and off track, there is always something to do at Relay

For Life. Those taking a break from walking can check out the entertainment and many activities, or relax at their team’s campsite. If you are a cancer survivor, cancer-free or living with the disease, we want to celebrate you! When you register as a survivor for Relay For Life, you will be honoured during the first lap of the relay - the Survivors’ Victory Lap.” As noted, these events bring together teams of family, friends and colleagues to celebrate cancer survivors, remember those we’ve lost and commit to raising funds to fight all types of cancer.

Janet Dixie is the chair of the local event, which now encompasses the entire Central Alberta region.

She describes the event as

being much more than a fundraiser.

“For us personally, in this relay, our goal is to really bring the awareness of cancer research to the forefront,” she said, adding the team format is great because it really brings people together.

That said, participants are also encouraged to sign up individually as well, said Dixie, who has served as chair for the event for three years now.

“We also have a Survivors’ Banquet, which is a very unique thing,” she said. “We have really tried to find something specific - that will really give back to those cancer survivors.

“It’s really nice - there’s entertainment and a guest speaker.

It’s a really nice lunch for them.”

There’s also a Caregivers’

Ceremony. “It’s a ‘thank you’ lap.”

Last year, about 150 people took part in the Central Alberta Relay for Life.

Another highlight of the event - the Luminary Ceremony at Relay For Life provides a meaningful way for participants to honour or remember loved ones. “Every year, we do this at 10 p.m. at night. We do try to invite anyone who purchases a luminary to light their own luminary.”

At Relay For Life, participants ultimately walk to raise funds that fight all types of cancer through world-class research, services for patients and their families, cancer prevention initiatives and advocacy on important cancer-related issues, the Society’s web site points out.

Folks can also just sign up at

the last minute, too. “Last year, we had a team join the day of the event.

“You can also join as a single participant now, too. That was new last year - you don’t have to put in a team. You can raise your funds and take part in the day.”

Ultimately, it’s a fun day for all involved, with prizes given out in several categories, she said. “They have a good time.

“I spend the entire day walking around talking to people and finding out what I can do better - what I can change for next year. What they love and they never want me to take away, and what they might miss.”

New this year is the addition of a public market which runs from 2 to 8 p.m. “We have about

30 vendors coming with all sorts of stuff, from handmade goods to wordworking. There is also a barbecue that runs from 4 to 6 p.m. “Anyone can come - it costs $5 and all the proceeds go directly back to the Canadian Cancer Society.”

The first Relay For Life event in Canada was held in 1999 and raised $85,000. Last year, 438 Relay for Life events were organized across Canada ultimately raising more than $28 million.

In total, Relay For Life has raised over $500 million for the Canadian Cancer Society.

Preparation and fun are key to healthy family living

Jack Wheeler, president and CEO of 360 Fitness knows a thing or two about healthy living when it comes to families.

A part-time stay at home dad, Wheeler has a two-year-old and a four-year-old and he has some exercise and healthy eating tips. To begin with, he said kids don’t know what exercise is, they just know what fun is.

A lot of the times, he said, people think they have to put their kids in sports or certain activities that have a gym or fitness routines involved. He said when it comes down to it, if it’s fun, the kids are going to do it.

“Finding things to do at the park, swimming and that kind of stuff is super key. You don’t have to have your kids in all these fitness programs,” said Wheeler. He said they don’t care if it’s physical activity or not, but if it’s fun, they’re in.

“And that’s the kind of stuff that we should be really developing in a child’s brain at that age. The growing years are anywhere from two-years-old to that 14-year-old mark. That’s where we need that brain to grow,” he said.

When it comes to healthy activities, it’s all about on-the-go problem-solving, fun, balance, coordination and dexterity. Wheeler said going to playgrounds and swimming is also a good way to be healthy and active for families.

“We go swimming a lot. It’s more expensive

but in the winter it’s a great alternative.”

He said typically kids should be active for 60 minutes a day. And that doesn’t have to be 60 minutes all at once.

“If you take the kids to the park for a half hour at lunch then that’s absolutely awesome. Maybe going out for a walk after dinner for the other 30 minutes,” he said, adding that it doesn’t have to be intense or all at once.

For him and his family, they have an outside policy to just get outside. They go to parks, go biking and take the dog for a walk to throw the ball.

When it comes to eating healthy, first and foremost, he said, it’s about being prepared, especially with kids.

He said it helps to pack snacks in a ziplock bag.

“It doesn’t have to be anything fancy. It could be cut up vegetables, fruit, rice crackers, applesauce.

We use cheese strings like a religion in this house,” he said with a laugh. With many kids liking lots of sugar in their diets, Wheeler had some sugar substitutes. Juice boxes? No way.

“Fruit juice is fine but too much of anything is obviously a bad thing, and most juice boxes are from concentrate with tons of added sugar,” he said. It may have fruit in the name, but Wheeler said it’s not a clear substitute for having a piece of fruit or real orange or apple juice.

“For the most part it’s just sugar water.”

In his household, they also use Club Soda with fresh lemon and lime squeeze.

The big money saver in their household, however, was having one of those carbonation machines, which he said cut down on lots of costs, getting rid of juices and pops, as the kids just wanted something bubbly.

“And they call it pop, which is great.”

Another healthy snack idea they do is what

they call fruit smoothie popsicles.

Instead of having ice cream or sugary popsicles, they got some custom popsicle stick inserts that look like a big ice cube tray with sticks in them.

They then blend up a smoothie and make it really thick with no extra water or ice added, pour it into the popsicle trays once blended, throw it in the freezer and then bam, they’ve got a batch of homemade healthy popsicles.

“I have more than they do.”

Local neurologist talks

MIGRAINES

There are many that suffer from migraines and one Red Deer neurologist said there is hope.

Males tend to see migraines develop around the age of eight, while they develop for females around puberty. A migraine headache can last anywhere from four to 72 hours. “Often it will be just a couple times a year, or once a year, and once things change again - when a woman’s pregnant, when a woman’s postpartum and when a woman reaches menopause - the closer you are to menopause, the less headaches you get and the more frequent auras become,” said Dr. Jennifer Bestard, neurologist.

There are different types of primary headaches, one of which is migraine, but the most common type of headache worldwide is a tension headache.

Bestard describes a migraine headache as being categorized as a primary-headache disorder, which do not have an ominous cause.

Characteristics of a episodic migraine is a unilateral headache and can include throbbing, be moderate to severe on a pain scale, and worse with excursion. Those who suffer from migraines can also experience light and sound sensitivity and nausea and/or vomiting.

About 30% of people who get migraine headaches also experience ‘aura’ which is sparkling lights or change in their vision. An aura can also include numbness in the arm that travels up to the face and some people even have speech difficulties.

A chronic migraines sufferer is somebody who has at least 15 days of headache per month.

“Because I am a headache specialist, often the patients I see have headache every day,” said Bestard. “Often I have to ask how many days a

week they don’t have headache.”

Treatment for an episodic migraine is acute abortive migraine treatment.

“What ends up happening often in people with chronic migraine is that many of them, because their headaches are so frequent, use these acute abortives on an almost nearly daily basis,” said Bestard.

“In addition to chronic migraine, they also have medication overuse headache. A medication overuse headache occurs when you use acute abortive medications too frequently to try and combat your headache and then it becomes a vicious cycle.

“Most patients don’t realize that using acute migraine treatment can lead to worsening chronic migraine. If you use Ibuprofen, Tylenol - even simple over the counter medications more than 15 days per month, you can get medication overuse headaches.”

She added about 25% of people with chronic migraine are medication over-users.

“It’s not that they are doing it on purpose, it’s because they are not being managed properly.”

Another treatment, which has been around for the past 15 or so years, is onabotulinumtoxinA, or more commonly known as Botox.

The onabotulinumtoxinA has to be given in a certain pattern.

If a patient is deemed appropriate with chronic migraine, insurance will cover the treatment in Alberta.

In addition, Bestard said she takes a fourpronged approach which includes lifestyle, prevention, bridging and acute management.

“I take a four-pronged approach when I am talking to a patient about chronic migraine. We need to talk about lifestyle modification. You need to have three meals a day, you want to get regular exercise, you want to make sure you are

not medication overusing.

“Sleep hygiene is important. It’s not just lack of sleep, it’s can be too much sleep that can trigger it. It’s important to have a regular sleep schedule,” she said.

“Medications that are used as prevention are medications that you take every day to prevent a headache. What happens to people who medication over-use is that they are using acute abortives for prevention, and that is something you don’t do.

“We then track their headaches and we eliminate whatever episodic medication they are on. If they are using Advil on a daily basis, I will take that Advil away and replace it with something called a bridge where I will give them a different kind of anti-inflammatory which I will slowly decrease.”

Acute management is the final prong to treatment.

“Tracking how they are taking their medications - I do this through a headache journal. One of the most important things a patient can do is keep a headache journal.

“All that needs to be is a monthly calendar and they can track on a scale of one to 10 how bad their headache is that day and what abortive medication they took.”

Bestard said there is hope for those those who suffer from migraines.

“It’s not hopeless. The best thing to do is keep a calendar, whether you see a specialist or not.

There is help.”

Flying Cross Ranch has an action-packed

summer

for HORSE enthusiasts

Horse racing, show jumping, rodeos, you name it, Roy Sturgeon’s done it.

He and his wife Christina put their passion of horses and the sport of riding to work with their own facility known as Flying Cross Ranch.

“I was in the racing industry almost 37 years. I rode races professionally and worked in and out of the race track at all different capacities,” said Roy. He said he knew the racing industry was declining not only here but in much of North

America, and so he needed a Plan B. As he was semi-retired, he thought he’d do some lessons.

“Our barn has basically been a beginner’s barn. We never really set it out to be that way - it just is,” he said.

With lots of other barns in the area, he said there aren’t a lot of places for people to begin riding, as many places want kids to be able to ride at a certain level so they can be taken into the show ring.

“Long story short - we do a ton of stuff out here,” he said.

Now in their fourth year, Roy bought the farm from his parents who had bought and sold

horses for a living.

“My dad wagon raced so virtually anything you’ve ever wanted to do with these things I’ve done it at one time or another.”

The Ranch starts out riders in beginner lessons and Roy teaches most of the kids that can ride.

His stepdaughter, Aleisha Shaw teaches a program called Pony Time for the young ones.

“Basically they teach them how to ride but its all on miniature ponies to get started and then generally after one or two rounds of lessons with her, the kids graduate onto the bigger horses.”

western riding, but currently about 90% of their riders are riding English. And they have riders ages three all the way up to 75-years-old.

“For me personally to learn how to ride, you just learn how to ride a lot better if you ride English. You get just better balance and a better core.”

Starting in July, they will do what’s called Sundays at the Ranch, which will include horse and pony rides and a petting zoo.

It will take place the first Sunday of every month and run July 4th to October 1st from 12 to 4 p.m.

“What we will have is the place is open to the public on the Sunday so we will have a petting zoo, we’ll have horse and pony rides. There’s a girl that rides here who will do face painting for us, too,” he said.

They’re also looking to start a higher-end farmer’s market with locally-sourced food grown by the neighbours rather than the supermarket or factory farms.

“To get started here what we are going to do is we’ve got a few people that are artists, so they’ll have art booths set up here as well.”

He’s also taught a bunch of the kids to race ride, so they will have some fun pony races too on the Sunday afternoons.

“We’ll probably run I imagine about three races every Sunday here.”

And the events don’t stop there. They also have what’s called Talk Derby to Me, a big Kentucky Derby-themed party that’s a murder mystery. It’s a fundraiser for the kids that ride at the barn.

“What that involves is when we started doing this there was a lady that was riding here and her husband was really sick and he needed a double lung transplant.

“So we had taught a bunch of these kids to race ride just for fun and we kind of did a few things with it that we put that together as a charity event for a fundraiser.”

They needed $10,000 that year to get different equipment and things that he needed until he was ready to go into the hospital for his operation. They ended up raising the money from that night from a live auction, silent auctions and more.

And so the crew decided to

turn it into an event at the barn. “(Some) people in the barn here are low-income families, so lots of them struggle for lessons. It’s a tough deal for them,” he said, adding that a lot of the money raised at Talk Derby goes towards the kids for lessons and programs so they can continue to keep riding. This will take place Aug. 11th and 12th starting at 6 p.m.

Admission is $80, which includes a high-end barbecue steak dinner, live and silent auctions and races to watch. A theatre company will also be present, putting on a murder mystery through the races.

“Everybody gets dressed up.

All the women wear big derby dresses and hats and all the men dress up in the suits,” said Roy. Also in August, the ranch will take part in what’s called open farm days, where they will open up the ranch for the public to view Aug. 19th from 10 to 5 p.m.

“That’s a government program. It’s all over the province so you can participate one or two days.”

Annual Alzheimer Walk coming up Family–like setting eases transition to long-term care As a child, Karen Cazemier spent many happy hours with her grandmother and later she helped care for her aging grandfather. This gave her lifelong appreciation for the elderly and an understanding of their needs.

When her grandmother needed long-term care, Cazemier’s family was lucky enough to find her a small, private home instead of a large institution. It was then Cazemier realized the need for better long-term care for elderly Albertans and that more smaller seniors homes was the answer.

She started Community Care Cottages Inc. soon after.

Thanks to the small setting, the cottages have a warm, family feel. There are also amenities and common rooms where they can socialize. Each resident has a personalized care plan which contains all their preferences down to what they like for breakfast which ensures care is consistent and predictable.

Lace up for a terrific cause with the annual Investor’s Group Walk for Alzheimer’s, which is set for June 17th at Bower Ponds.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. with the walk/ run to start at 10 a.m. A barbecue follows at 11 a.m.

“This year we are changing the location to Bower Ponds, because we are including runners,” said Kerrie Jobs, community relations coordinator, adding that the starting point will be at the mainstage area.

Last year, there were about 120 people who attended and this year, Jobs is hoping to see that number doubled.

In 2016, more than $40,000 was raised for further research and to help fund programming as well.

“The money raised goes to support groups, education and research,” she said. “Because we are completely non-profit, we rely on the generosity of our donors.”

Anyone who doesn’t want to participate, but would still like to donate, is of course encouraged to do so as well.

According to the Alzheimer’s Society, Alzheimer’s disease is irreversible and destroys brain cells, causing thinking ability and memory to deteriorate. Alzheimer’s disease is not a normal part of aging. Dr. Alois Alzheimer first identified Alzheimer’s disease in 1906.

Morrison said the seniors in the Red Deer area are very active, with many programs going on throughout the City - not just at the Golden Circle. She added many businesses have catered to a seniors’ population that is growing larger as the baby-boomer generation ages.

“The reality is that senior populations will be the one which supports business,” she added.

While Seniors’ Week focuses mostly on seniors programming, much of the programming throughout the City focuses on intergenerational learning.

“Intergenerational programming is good because it allows people with the wisdom, as we say, to pass on to the youth and provide the opportunity to pass on skills that may not be taught at home anymore,” she said. “Seniors are all getting connected through their computers, they’re on facebook, they are facetiming. This means the age gap is getting smaller and it makes it even smaller when groups do things together.”

Morrison added she wants, “To thank all the seniors in our community for everything they have contributed to our great City.”

People from all over Red Deer come together every year in June to celebrate Seniors’ Week. This year’s event, according to Golden Circle Executive Director Monica Morrison, is intended as way to say thanks for all the contributions that seniors have made to this community and throughout the country.

“Seniors’ Week is celebrated nationally and a lot of provinces engage in celebrating,” she said. “Seniors have played an important role in our community and have built our nation , if you think about it. Each generation has contributed to the foundation of our great country and we recognize all the hard work they have done. That is why we celebrate Seniors’ Week.”

Morrison explained that while every generation should be celebrated, seniors need to be recognized for their efforts to help create Canada what it is.

“We tend to celebrate the youth and other groups but it’s nice to celebrate the people that formed our country,” she said.

Morrison noted this year’s celebration theme is diversity, which puts significance on the many seniors in our community who have immigrated to Canada at some point.

“We have made a video that interviews seniors who have immigrated to this country back in the 50s. We tried to get their perspective on what it was like to come to Canada, because a lot of seniors in

VERTIGO - as the

world turns Here’s what you need to know about vertigo.

More cases are coming up from seniors experiencing vertigo and according to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, dizziness/vertigo is a common symptom affecting about 30% of people over the age of 65.

As a child, you could play on the merry-go-round or spin in circles for hours and hours. The dizzy feeling you got afterward was fun for a few minutes until it went away. But imagine feeling that sense of rocking and spinning for no reason and it lasting for minutes, hours, or days before subsiding. This is what happens to people who suffer from vertigo.

Keep reading to learn what it’s like to have vertigo, what might cause it, and how it’s best treated.

Sometimes vertigo comes out of nowhere while you’re sitting still. Other times you stand up too

fast or move your head and all of a sudden you feel like everything is spinning or swaying. When you try to walk, you feel pulled to one side or like you’re going to fall over. While similar, vertigo creates a different sensation from just feeling dizzy or lightheaded. For some folks, nausea, vomiting, headaches, sweating, strange eye movements, ringing in the ears, or hearing loss accompany vertigo.

Most cases of vertigo can be traced to problems in the ear. It’s the sensitive hair cells of the inner ear that help your body and brain decide your position in space and keep you balanced.

When infection causes inflammation in the inner ear, there’s fluid build-up due to Meniere’s disease, or small calcium crystals become dislodged from the inner ear and irritate the hair cells, you may experience vertigo.

Vertigo can also be the result of an injury to the head or neck; stroke; tumor; migraine head-

ache; multiple sclerosis; alcohol consumption; or certain medications used to treat high blood pressure, depression, or seizures.

Trying to lead a normal life with vertigo is difficult. During a vertigo spell it’s hard to walk and you can’t focus. So, what can you do to regain balance and make the spinning stop?

Treatment will depend on what’s causing the vertigo. Many times, your episode of vertigo will eventually go away on its own as your brain adjusts to a new normal. Medications are available to reduce your symptoms, but should only be used short-term. The medications available presently may help temporarily, but they come with side effects and offer only symptomatic vertigo relief—not cure.

If your condition is caused by inner ear problems, talk to your doctor about repositioning movements. With this type of treatment, an experienced healthcare professional moves your head and body in specific ways to reposition the crystals in your inner ear responsible for

your vertigo. The movements are safe and have a high success rate.

Other head movements and physical therapies can be performed on a regular basis to lessen the sensitivity of the inner ear nerves. If vertigo is caused by an infection, antibiotics may be necessary. Extra fluid in the ear due to Meniere’s disease can be treated with water pills known as diuretics.

As a last resort, surgery may be required to relieve the unpleasant symptoms of vertigo.

Vertigo sound miserable? It is. Thankfully, you can lessen your chances of developing the condition by keeping your blood pressure, weight, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels under control.

If you have Meniere’s disease, consuming less sodium may help prevent recurrences. Those who deal with vertigo related to inner-ear problems should learn how to perform the head exercises and then do them on a regular basis.

The Sylvan Lake Aqua Splash is up and ready for the summer.

With a soft opening last year, they were open four weeks throughout the month of August.

“It’s been a very long application process to go through all the federal, provincial, municipal licence and regulations and approvals,” said Alison Bishop, owner of Sylvan Lake Aqua Splash. She said this will mark the first full year of operation.

Training for the staff begins June 10th with the opening to proceed the weekend of June 17th.

“The thing with the business of course is it’s all

weather-dependent,” said Bishop. Hours are seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. with the last admission at 6 p.m.

“It’s hourly increments. You can purchase a twohour for a discount, but we’re honestly finding it’s not a bouncy castle, it really is an obstacle course, so we’re finding for most people an hour is more than enough,” she said.

And the course is fun for the whole family to enjoy.

“It’s for everybody. It really is.”

A product out of Europe, the course is an inflatable obstacle course. The product is called Wibit, a high-quality German engineering product that is now spreading worldwide.

“At this point there are two parks in B.C. We’re the first in Alberta,” she said, adding that another one is developing in Quebec. She said it’s a course that only suits certain areas, with requirements consisting of the depth of water and starting with an aboriginal affairs cycle, which means it has to not disturb fish breeding, spawning times, certain aquatic life and vegetation at the bottom of the lake.

Bishop said she strongly recommends one hour of participation, especially for smaller children.

This year they will be working on expanding the trampoline park and putting in a handful of new components out on the lake.

She said the feedback they received last year from the public is that the product is hard to get back up on once you’re in the water. “We will be adjusting that this year and putting in certain components like steps to step up, and just to make the access easier to get out of the water especially for the smaller children,” she said.

There will always be two fully certified lifeguards at all times on the products, with life jackets mandatory, but the requirement, she said, is that everyone must know how to swim. “There’s strict supervision, it’s highly regulated safety-wise and its located right on the beach area so you can come and spend the

whole day. It’s even fun just to spectate.”

The course is for any child over eight, so those aged six to eight require an adult. “Everyone’s wearing a life jacket and its just a really fun family environment.”

Bishop said there’s also lots of other activities going on around the new park area in Sylvan this year, making it a fun, safe, healthy and energetic summer activity to take part in.

“If you want your kids to sleep that night, we got a lot of feedback on just how exhausted the children were and, ‘They’ll certainly sleep tonight sort of thing’.”

Bishop said the course’s components are made to challenge you. “There’s all kinds of things. There are swings, there are ladders, there’s a snake turn, there are monkey bars. It really is a floating obstacle course.”

She said it’s all about tackling it at your own pace, as there’s no certain route you have to follow.

“It’s basically open play so you can do as much or as little as you want.”

Admission is $12 an hour for children and $17 for adults.

Taste of Denmark awaits at Danish museum

For an up-close look into Danish culture and tradition, check out the Danish Canadian National Museum near Spruce View. The Museum couldn’t be set in a more scenic space - it’s nestled on a picturesque stretch of land minutes from Spruce View and within easy access of Red Deer as well.

To get there, take Hwy. 54 west of Innisfail, turn south on Range Road 31 in Spruce View and go straight through the four-way stop in Dickson. The Museum, which is open through to the Labour Day weekend, is located just less than one km from there on the right.

Hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays to Sundays.

“We are celebrating 25 years since the opening of the Museum,” said Brian Desjardins, executive director of the Museum.

“I’ve also been astounded as to the contributions of the Danish community - not just in Alberta but also from across Canada. All of the exhibits here have come about through donations, and volunteer labor,” he said. “I’m very impressed and amazed at how all these exhibits have been built by local people and with the funding, donations and sponsorship of the Danish community across Canada.”

The Danish Canadian Museum is a national organization, he said, adding that there is also a representative from Denmark on the board of directors.

Just last month, the Museum hosted the 2017 Danish Canadian conference. Those in attendance had a full slate of events and activities, including a Scandinavian trail tour which included visits to favourite historical local sites such as the Markerville Creamery,

the Stephansson House and the Dickson Store Museum.

Desjardins said the first wave of Danish immigrants came during the period from 1860 to 1914. “In 1903 the first group of Danish homesteaders came to Dickson from the United States.”

The second wave of immigration took place from 1919 to 1930.

“In about 1920, Danish immigration into the United States was halted but Canada was now actively seeking experienced farmers from Europe.”

A third wave of Danish immigrants settled in Canada during the period of 1945 to 1970s.

“People were looking for a new start in life, a new adventure, exploration.”

To really help visitors understand the richness within Danish culture, plus all the incredible history of both the country itself and the experiences of immigrants that settled in Central Alberta, there are a number of fascinating artifacts and exhibits on display. There is also the Pioneer Garden to explore, the cafe to enjoy and the Dagmar Pioneer Church is a miniature version of a popular Danish church design.

A bequest from Karen and Kresten Sommer enabled the Museum to acquire a Gokstadfæring (small boat) replica which was built at the Viking Ship Museum Boatyard in Roskilde, Denmark.

It was eventually christened the Freydis Joanna and shipped to Halifax before being transported and displayed across the nation.

The boat is now part of the Danish Canadian National Museum’s permanent collection.

Meanwhile, the Museum’s premier event, Viking Days, runs Aug. 19th-20th.

Viking Days features a look at Viking history, including reenactments and an up-close look at how Vikings lived 1,000 years ago. Visitors can learn how they made their crafts and tools, cooked their food and set up their tents.

As mentioned, there are also Viking battle re-enactments which are always a huge hit with visitors. There’s even some room for a bit of audience participation, he added with a laugh. Another not-to-be-missed event during Viking Days is a chance to chow down with the guest Vikings themselves.

“On the first evening, there is a feast with the Vikings, too,” he said, noting it’s indeed a key part of the two-day fun-filled cultural celebration.

Meanwhile, the Museum is also sporting some new branding - which includes the phrase ‘Step into the Saga’. It’s a perfect means of inviting visitors to fully experience everything the tremendous site has to offer.
