FORD introduces a 10-speed transmission Just like the Fiesta, Focus and Escape that came before it, the 2018 Ford EcoSport will soon be available worldwide. This newcomer joins the ranks of the Edge, Escape, Expedition, Explorer and Flex to raise Ford’s SUV and crossover count to six.

The 2018 Ford Mustang

ECOSPORT Billed as an “urban SUV,” the compact EcoSport is part of a growing segment that includes competitors like the Nissan Juke, the Honda HR-V and the Mazda CX-3. The entry-level model (featuring a 1.0L 3-cylinder turbocharged EcoBoost engine) is only available with two-wheel drive, but all-wheel drive capabilities are available with the 2.0L 4-cylinder model. Regardless of engine choice, all versions of the EcoBoost come with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Among the noteworthy features of this compact SUV are a hinged rear hatch, an 8-inch touchscreen and lots of storage space.

NEW AND IMPROVED PICKUPS Ford hasn’t neglected its larger offerings this year. Powered by a 3.5L twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 engine, the rugged new F-150 Raptor can output up to 450 horsepower and 510 lb.-ft. of torque. The new Raptor is also the first model to feature Ford’s new 10-speed automatic transmission. Another truck that saw some improvements this year is the Super Duty pickup (F-250, F-350 and F-450), which now weighs approximately 159 kilograms less than its predecessor.

The 2018 F-150 also stands out thanks to its new 3.0L turbodiesel Power Stroke V6 engine. All of the engines available for the F-150 have been improved, and are now paired with the new 10-speed automatic transmission. 2018 MUSTANG Finally, Ford also made noteworthy improvements to its Mustang, which also includes the new 10-speed automatic transmission (available with the 5.0L V8 and the 2.3L EcoBoost engines) for the 2018 model year.

Performance upgrades for the RAM and the CHALLENGER Dodge has decided to add to its Ram pickup line once again this year with the launch of a new Rebel Black edition. Its impressive Power Wagon also underwent numerous design improvements in addition to its enhanced performance and handling.

RAM POWER WAGON Inspired by the look of the Ram Rebel 1500, the Power Wagon sports the robust body of a 2500 and is powered by a 6.4L V8 HEMI that yields 410 horsepower and 429 lb.-ft. of

torque. The new model features a bolder appearance than its predecessor with all-black bumpers and grille. Several style elements make it instantly recognizable, including the large RAM emblem on the grille, the air intakes on the hood and the Warn winch on the front bumper. The steel winch cable can haul up to 5,443 kilograms and is strong enough to free the Power Wagon from mud or snow with ease. This exceptional Ram was designed for extreme off-road driving and features a multi-arm rear suspension, Bilstein monotube gas pressure shocks, front and rear Tru-Lock differentials, hill descent control, 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac tires, as well as fuel tank and transfer case skid plates. On rugged terrain, the 36-centimetre ground clearance makes crossing bodies of water up to 76 centimetres deep a breeze.

A 4X4 CHALLENGER In an attempt to expand its customer base, Chrysler is courting Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro owners (who dread driving their pony car in winter conditions) with the new all-wheel drive Dodge Challenger GT. Built with the latest technological ad-

CHRYSLER Pacifica wins Utility Vehicle of the Year Thanks to its always-innovative Grand Caravan and Town & Country models, Chrysler continues to lead the way when it comes to minivans. In order to maintain its dominance over this evolving segment, the manufacturer dared to replace the venerable Town & Country with an all-new model: the Pacifica. This seems to have paid off for Chrysler, as the Pacifica became the very first recipient of the North American Utility Vehicle of the Year award at the latest Detroit Auto Show.

Compared to the Dodge Grand Caravan, which remains in production, the Pacifica targets shoppers in search of a more luxurious vehicle by offering superior handling, enhanced comfort and an incredibly quiet drive. Under the hood is a 3.6L Penstar V6 engine that’s paired with a new 9-speed automatic transmission. Perfect for family vacations and leisure activities of all kinds, the Pacifica can haul campers, boats and more with its 1,633-kilogram towing capacity.

The Pacifica’s interior finishing is impeccable

To maximize fuel economy, the Pacifica has debuted an all-new hybrid engine system that combines a 3.6L Atkinson cycle V6 with an electric motor and a 16-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. It has an estimated range of 911 kilometres on a fully charged battery and a full tank of fuel. The manufacturer recommends against hauling trailers to avoid damaging the vehicle’s mechanics — a rule that applies to nearly all hybrids currently on the market.

A number of optional accessories are available for the Pacifica, including three large touchscreens (one in the front and two in the back), a Stow ‘n Vac central vacuum cleaner, and Stow ‘n Go foldable seats.

The JEEP Compass makes a comeback Those who were convinced that the end was near for the Jeep Compass will have to admit defeat. On the contrary, the American manufacturer’s compact SUV has been completely redesigned for 2017. Compared to the previous generation, the new Compass rests on a more rigid platform for improved handling, comfort and off-road per-

formance. Shorter and wider than its predecessor, it offers more legroom for passengers, who can now also enjoy a panoramic roof and remote-controlled trunk. Upgraded materials were used to improve the dashboard and control panel, and Jeep’s Uconnect multimedia system is now compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The only engine currently available for the Compass is a Tigershark 2.4L 4-cylinder built with MultiAir2 technology. It outputs 180 horsepower and 175 lb.-ft. of torque, and the front-wheel drive models can be paired with either a 6-speed manual or a 9-speed automatic gearbox. Conversely, all-wheel drive models come equipped with a 6-speed automatic trans-

mission. Buyers who decide to go with four-wheel drive can choose between Active Drive, where the rear axle automatically activates and deactivates according to road conditions for optimal fuel consumption, and Active Drive Low designed for rough terrain performance. In the latter version, the transfer case has a gear ratio of 20:1, which allows better handling on slippery surfaces. Furthermore, it has a towing capacity of 907 kilograms.

17-inch wheels on the new Compass

For those wishing to venture onto rugged terrain, the Compass Trailhawk edition offers higher ground clearance and features a reinforced substructure, active downhill controls and more dependable tires. The Trailhawk edition is easily recognizable thanks to its robust red hooks and sleek black hood.

CHEVROLET makes a move on the electric car market Chevrolet has welcomed several new arrivals to its lineup this year, including the 2018 Equinox, the 2018 Traverse, the hatchback Cruze and the all-new Bolt EV. In the budget category, the new Sonic and Trax models now feature the same design elements as the rest of the brand’s offerings. Fans of sports cars will be happy to hear that the Corvette Grand Sport is making a comeback this year as the Camaro continues to celebrate its fiftieth anniversary. BOLT EV Chevrolet’s most anticipated release this year was the Bolt EV. Powered by an entirely electric engine and a 60-kWh lithium-ion battery pack that outputs an estimated 200 horsepower, this subcompact hatchback boasts a 383-kilometre range and can accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in less than seven seconds.

EQUINOX The Equinox is Chevrolet’s second best-selling vehicle, after the Silverado pickup. This year’s model is 180 kilograms lighter than the previous one and offers a choice of three engine configurations: a 4-cylinder 1.5L turbo, a 4-cylinder 2.0L turbo, and an all-new diesel-powered 2.0L 4-cylinder that’s also available in the new Cruze. TRAVERSE The 2018 Traverse has been redesigned from bumper to bumper. New-generation models stand out from the GMC Acadia thanks to a spacious interior that can accommodate up to eight passengers as well as an improved towing capacity, which now reaches 2,268 kilograms. Two engines are available for the Traverse, namely a 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder and a 3.6L V6. CULT CLASSIC TURNS 50 The Camaro turned 50 in September 2016. To celebrate, the iconic ZL1 model (both the coupe and the cabriolet) was given a supercharged 650-horsepower 6.2L V8 with 650 lb.-ft. of torque. Its driveline can be coupled with either a 6-speed manual transmission or an allnew automatic 10-speed.

TOYOTA recycles the Scion line The launch of the iM compact hatchback ended up being too little, too late for the Scion brand, leading Toyota to abandon the line that debuted in the U.S. in 2003. However, the iM managed to hold onto its spot in Toyota dealerships under the name Corolla iM. The other spared Scion model is the FR-S coupe, which is now simply known as the 86 (GT86 in Europe). IN WITH THE NEW Toyota’s greatest asset this year is the new C-HR, originally destined to give a second wind to Scion sales. The C-HR bridges a major gap in Toyota’s lineup, which was among the few major brands without an urban SUV for the North

American market. Other developments of note for Toyota include the 2018 Camry, which was given a dynamic new look, and the all-new hybrid-powered Prius Prime. The bold design of the 2018 C-HR is expected to attract a younger demographic to the Toyota brand. All versions are equipped with a 144-horsepower 2.0L 4-cylinder engine and an automatic continuous variation transmission. The standard model comes generously equipped, with several driver assistance systems including adaptive cruise control, blind spot detection, lane exit alerts and automatic collision braking. The most recent Corolla sedan now features the same standard accessories. The Toyota Corolla iM

COROLLA IM The Corolla iM replaces the Matrix, which was discontinued by Toyota in late 2014. This feature-packed hatchback boasts impressive credentials like an above-average charge capacity and plenty of storage space. The only model currently available comes fully equipped, with the only optional feature being a CVT gearbox.

The Toyota C-HR

THE NEW 86 The latest 86 has enjoyed various cosmetic upgrades that allow it to further stand out from the defunct FR-S. Its 2.0L 4-cylinder engine gained 5 horsepower for a total output of 205.
