Abbotsford punches above its weight when it comes to community events. The premiere example is the world-famous Abbotsford International Airshow where thousands crane their necks skyward as jets and vintage planes tear through the blue sky.

To host world-class events, you need world-class facilities and Abbotsford has many, including the Abbotsford International Airport, the Fraser Valley Trade and Exhibition Centre -Tradex, the University of the Fraser Valley and the Abbotsford Centre, a 8,500-seat multi-purpose arena that has played host to such acts as Cirque de Soleil and rock star band KISS. Cock an ear to the wind and you can almost hear “fish on!” as anglers from across the province, and indeed the world, flock to our shores. Whether it’s the Fraser River for sturgeon and salmon fishing, or the beautiful and tranquil Mill Lake for trout and largemouth bass, Abbotsford also has the ancillary retailers to provide you the right equipment to land the big one.

Spin your head around 360 degrees and you’ll see Abbotsford provides endless outdoor opportunities. The 10-km Discovery Trail links east and west Abbotsford while the 2.2 km Mill Lake Loop is an easy walk in an amazing urban outdoor setting.

Mountain bike enthusiasts will find Sumas Mountain offers a full spectrum of trail options. For those who prefer BMX, Abbotsford Exhibition Park has a world-class track.

Golfers of all abilities will find Abbotsford’s three public courses a fair test. The championship-length Ledgeview Golf and Country Club has produced some of Canada’s best, including recent Masters participant and member of the hallowed “59” club Adam Hadwin.

Should the weather turn inclement and you’d prefer to be indoors, we’ve got you covered there as well. Project Rock Climbing will get you vertical, the Abbotsford Curling Club will get you sliding and the Matsqui Recreational Centre will get you all wet thanks to their indoor pool, which features a diving board, slide and shallow beach which sees waves crashing upon it every 15 minutes.

Abbotsford’s historic downtown plays host to the two-day Berrybeat Festival in July and the Historic Downtown Abbotsford Car Show in August. It also offers amazing shopping options from charming retail boutiques and vintage stores.

Aboriginal Arts and Culture Day

Abbotsford Arts Council hosts a free family event from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at 2387 Ware St. In recognition of Aboriginal Awareness Month, Abbotsford Arts Council is honoured to present the 2nd Annual Aboriginal Arts and Culture Day, an opportunity for the community to come and learn about Aboriginal arts, culture, history and traditions. Watch Aboriginal artists create their work on site and enjoy the option to purchase directly from the artist. The centre stage will feature traditional Stó:lo story tellers, holistic teachings, drummers and dancers. The Bannock Wagon food truck will also be at this event.

The Abbotsford Youth Commission Youth Centre at the Abbotsford Recreation Centre, located at 2499 McMillan Road., plays host to this youth ages 12 to 18 event. Free pancakes with maple syrup and Canadian bacon will be served up. This free event runs from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.

The 2017 theme is True North Strong, which is a celebration of Canada 150. A special Canada 150 designed CF-18 Hornet will be one of the signatures planes in the air. The stunning design celebrates Canada’s 150th anniversary with the national colours, red and white, and several versions of the famed maple leaf symbol. CLAYBURN VILLAGE EST. 1905 If you’re looking for a real taste of Abbotsford history, visit Clayburn Village, located at the foot of Sumas Mountain.

The area was designated as a historic site in 1996 and was the first “company town” in British Columbia, having been built by the Clayburn Company to provide employee housing and services. It supported three stores, a school and a church.

The discovery of high-grade clay throughout Sumas Mountain and the demand for bricks brought the village into being in 1905 by Charles Maclure, son of John Maclure, a former Royal Engineer and B.C. pioneer.

Up to 180 men were employed at the plant, and it soon became the largest producer of bricks in B.C. The brick plant was dismantled in 1931, when scaled-back operations were moved to the sister “Kilgard” site, located on the other side of Sumas Mountain.

But still remaining in Clayburn Village are half the original homes, a store, the church and the schoolhouse.

Most prestigious of the remaining buildings is the Clayburn Church, built in 1912, and the Clayburn Schoolhouse, built in 1907.

The area is reminiscent of a turn-of-the-century English village, featuring brick buildings with neat gardens, surrounded by white picket fences.

CIRCLE FARM TOUR Abbotsford, known as the “city in the country,” offers both urban comforts and rural charm.

If you’re looking to escape the former in search of the latter, the Circle Farm Tour is your guide to farmers’ markets, farm-gate sales, eateries, heritage sites, fairs and more in the heart of the Fraser Valley’s bread basket.

ABBOTSFORD INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT Abbotsford International Airport (YXX) has seen passenger numbers take off in recent years.

Hundreds of thousands of people pass through the airport each year, with regular flights to other Canadian cities, many of which connect to U.S. and international destinations.

A total of 530,642 passengers passed through YXX last year. That increase of 42,810 people, translated to an 8.78 per cent jump from 2015.

WestJet, New Leaf Travel Company, and several smaller operators fly out of YXX.

Abbotsford International Airport has seen such significant growth that it is planning an expansion of its terminal that is expected to cost $5 million to $6 million. The airport has also eliminated its Airport Improvement Fee, which was applauded by WestJet, one of YXX’s major users.

The airport also hosts the Abbotsford International Airshow, which draws tens of thousands of visitors each year, along with the The Sky’s No Limit – Girls Fly Too Event in celebration of International Women’s Day.

YXX is also the centre of the region’s Fraser Valley’s thriving aerospace sector, which employs hundreds locally, and Tradex, located adjacent to the airport, holds dozens of major consumer and trade events every year.

The airport is also home to the University of the Fraser Valley’s Aircraft Structures Technician program.

Stoney Creek Park Trail/Bateman Park Bateman Rd. 1.2km Mild to steep grades Take a walk along the trails and bridges which crisscross the stream throughout Bateman Park.

The trail is multi-use gravel. Provides fall viewing of the west coast salmon migration and great bird watching including birds of prey such as barred owls, red-tailed hawks and Coopers hawks. See one of the largest Douglas fir trees in Abbotsford.

Clearbrook Park to Downes Bowl Clearbrook Rd. A recreation green space with Downes Bowl located in the centre with surrounding hills and wetland.

Terrain makes for both easy and hilly trails. A popular park for walkers, joggers and cyclists with the variety of trails found in the park.

Bateman Rd. North loop 1.6km / South loop 2.3km Mild grades This multi-use gravel trail is built around stormwater detention ponds with two loop trails that connect to each other. Suitable for all ages and fitness levels and popular for walkers, runners, bikers and birdwatchers. Some sections prone to flood during heavy rain.

4214-, 4444 Lakemount Rd. 2km to first lookout Intermediate level This trail is the bottom portion of the Glen Ryder Trail. It is just over 2km one way with an elevation gain of 406m. On average it takes hikers 40 - 45 minutes to the first lookout. Hikers can continue another 3.5km to Taggart Peak.

Albert Dyck Trail

Arnold Dyke Trail (7.4km) McKay Creek Dyke Trail (1.6km) Sumas River Dyke Trail (8.1km) Barrowtown Dyke Trail (4.5km) Vedder Dyke Trail (4.5km) Trails are located in the agriculture heartland of Sumas Prairie. These trails are perfect for walkers, runners, cyclists and horseback riding. The banks of Sumas River and Vedder Canal are popular for birdwatchers.

Walmsley Ave. 1.7km Gentle grades Located in Albert Dyck Memorial Park, this gravel trail wraps around the man-made lake in the park’s centre. The perfect place for swimming and fishing or to watch wake-boarding and waterskiing in the summer.

Sumas Mountain Trail Sumas Mountain Rd. 14.0km Rated difficult A trail used primarily for hiking and camping from May - October. An out and back trail offers scenic views of the Fraser River, Sumas Prairie and Vedder Mountain, to name a few. The trail can be muddy, slippery and steep in some places.

Matsqui Trail Regional Park Mission Bridge Picnic Area 7km Easy level Following the banks of the Fraser River, the trail is well groomed for walkers, runners, horseback riders and cyclists and is popular year-round with something to see no matter what the time of year.

SCIENCE ROCKS SUMMER CAMPS It’s never too early to inspire young children to love learning. That’s why the Faculty of Science at UFV offers Science Rocks! summer camps every year in July and August.

Designed especially for kids going into Grades 4, 5, 6, and 7 for the upcoming fall, these camps are fun and an awesome learning opportunity for campers. Each camp week is organized around a central theme and include both games and hands-on activities from the fields of physics, chemistry, math, and computer science.

“At Science Rocks! kids get to explore through play, work in teams, and meet new friends,” says Robin Endelman, UFV Faculty and Science Rocks Co-ordinator. “They learn science in a nurturing and fun environment. Kids love the freedom to explore and make discoveries. It’s awesome to watch them build up their confidence, leadership skills, and a love for learning.

“Exploring and experimenting are the best ways to give young children the skills they need for lifelong learning,” Endelman adds.

CELEBRATING CANADA’S 150

ABBOTSFORD AGRIFAIR There’s something for everyone at Abbotsford’s “Best Little Country Fair.”

Agrifair is an annual celebration of the city’s agricultural heritage, running Aug. 4 to 6, 2017 at Abbotsford Exhibition Park.

This year’s event celebrates Canada’s 150th birthday and includes plenty of family fun for all ages.

The fair includes a midway, the Laughing Loggers Lumberjack Show, Richard’s Racing Pigs and Ducks, professional wrestling, street hockey and more.

The Fraserway RV Family Fun Building – a new feature in 2016 – returns this year and includes mini golf, a rock climbing wall, a play station area, a reading area, Science World shows, arts and crafts, and more.

Free diapers, wipes and water are also available in the building, which is free with admission to the fair.

For those who like some fast-paced action, the motorsport arena at Agrifair features a demolition derby and the Global FMX motocross show.

The Agrifair grounds will include roving entertainment such as clowns, balloon artists, Dan the One Man Band and magician Gary Savard.

Featured on the main stage will be A Salute to Diversity on Friday night, A Salute to Canadian Rock on Saturday, and a Christian concert with headliner Kutless on Sunday.

The fair also features 4H shows and competitions all weekend, as well as antique farm machinery displays and demos, the Mobile Dairy Classroom and the Poultry in Motion mini barn.

Agrifair also opens a new licensed venue, the Pit Stop, this year.

ABBOTSFORD INTERNATIONAL AIRSHOW The Abbotsford International Airshow returns to the skies at the Abbotsford International Airport this summer from August 11 to 13.

The 2017 theme is True North Strong, which is a celebration of Canada 150.

A special Canada 150 designed CF-18 Hornet will be one of the signatures planes in the air.

The stunning design celebrates Canada’s 150th anniversary with the national colours, red and white, and several versions of the famed maple leaf symbol.

Those who attended last year’s show will remember seeing the F-35 on the ground, but this year the big news is that the plane will be in the air.

Other performers confirmed for the event include: the Aeroshell Aerobatic Team, CF Snowbirds, the Dan Buchanan night glider and the ACC F16.

The SkyHawks Canadian Armed Forces Parachute Team is celebrating their 46th year, with other attractions including Kent Pietsch and the Jelly

The Kids Zone will feature an array of activities presented by McDonalds. Inflatable toys, bouncy castles, a blow up archery unit from Cabelas, a climbing wall, as well as aerospace presentations from Science World.

The Kids Zone runs from 3:30 to 7 p.m. on Friday, and Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Science World presentations run on Friday at 5 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday at noon and 3 p.m.

A yet to be confirmed static display of aircrafts will also return for 2017.
