LAND TRAVEL Travelling north on Highway 19 Campbell River is 153 kilometres from Nanaimo or 264 kilometres from Victoria. If you prefer the scenic route, follow the Oceanside route signs along Highway 19A.

From a deep crevice on the sea floor, a light grey wrinkled face peers from the darkness. The bulging eyes of the prehistoric looking wolf eel gaze out of the hole looking for his next meal of crab or urchins. The wolf eel is just one of the unique marine critters which divers travel from all over the world to photograph.

The nutrient rich and current swept waters of Discovery Passage are home to a plethora of other weird and wonderful critters which cannot be found anywhere else. Eight legged giant pacific octopus can reach an impressive ten metres from tip to tip, making them the largest on the planet. Other large animals that divers and snorkelers have been known to come across in local waters include the 5-8 metre long six gill shark, large steller sealions, and two metre long lingcod.

But it’s not just large marine life that attracts divers from around the globe. There are dozens of diving sites throughout this region where the walls are completely covered in brightly coloured sponges, corals and invertebrates; diversity which is simply unmatched.

Sunk in 1996 near Seymour Narrows, the former HMCS Columbia has created an artificial reef system which is now home to over 100 species of marine life. She has become a popular diving site with divers of all levels, as both a recreational and training dive site.

All roads lead to the fishing capital Campbell River, “the Salmon Capital of the World”, has earned its place at the top of the list of salmon fishing destinations.

All five species of Pacific Salmon pass through the waters between Campbell River and the Mainland as they return to spawn in their native rivers.

The Campbell River is a user-friendly river to experience the joy of catch and release. Fish for trout year round and pink salmon later in the summer.

The main fishing spots are easy to reach and the sandy pool sees anglers of all ages congregate and jockey for position to cast out lures or flies.

Where the Quinsam River enters the Campbell at times will have a heavy concentration of anglers. Between the bridges, is where most of the action takes place.

In late September, the coho will be running and offers big action on a drift or fly rod.

During the summer, Echo Lake can be fished with a fly or lure. Echo Lake is stocked twice a year with catchable sized trout.

Traditionalists will want to check out the Tyee Club of BC located on Spit Road.

It began in 1924 with a group of anglers who returned to Campbell River each year in pursuit of the elusive Tyee, a Chinook salmon, 30 pounds or larger.

Tyee fishing is done quietly in a small, classic row boat. No motors are allowed in the Tyee pool. The rower will slip the boat into the currents and eddies while keeping a basic plug or spoon beating in the current.

If a fish is boated and weighs 30 pounds or more, the catch is recorded and the angler becomes a member of the Tyee Club.

Strathcona Park is the largest and oldest provincial park on Vancouver Island – founded in 1911.

The park is home to the highest peaks of the Vancouver Island Ranges. From the Golden Hinde to Mount Albert Edward, people come from all over the world to explore this outdoor mecca. The park offers topography that ranges from inviting to downright scary.

The main access to the Park is via Highway 28. The main access route to Forbidden Plateau from Courtenay 16

and Campbell River is via the Paradise Meadows Trailhead at Mount Washington.

Crest Creek Crag is another favourite. The local climbing community maintains the routes regularly offering expert climbs and some routes for beginners. The Crest Creek climbing area is located near Crest Lake and Crest Creek on Hwy 28 (to Gold River).

There are 19 crags; Black Crag, Pipeline Bluff, Narcissus Wall and Skid Row. Gravel roads and short hiking trails from the parking lot lead climbers to the crags.

Bursts of moonlight bouncing off a rippling lake, campfire sparks rising on the heat like miniature fireworks, kids turning marshmallows into flaming balls of sugar – summer camping is great just about anywhere. Here it’s awesome.

In the lake-dotted hills west of Campbell River there are more campgrounds than you can explore in a lifetime. A good place to start is Elk Falls Provincial Park where a thundering waterfall, an extensive network of forest trails and the nearby Quinsam salmon hatchery make it one of the best campground accommodations.

Just 2 kms from downtown it provides quiet riverside camping. After a morning fishing, pack a picnic lunch and take a cool stroll to the Elk Falls day-use area and wander through the only significant stand of old-growth Douglas fir north of MacMillan Provincial Park.

Other more remote camp grounds that should be high on your list of options include Loveland Bay and Morton Lake.

Adventure GUIDE Canyon View Trail – (6 kms) – This is a well maintained loop trail that winds along the banks of the Campbell River. One highlight is an 80 foot suspension walkway that spans the canyon and offers spectacular views of rapids and spawning salmon.

The Ripple Rock Trail – (8 kms) – This trail starts off in a field, crosses over a suspension bridge, winds through the forest along sheltered Menzies Bay and up rock bluffs leading to some scenic view points of Seymour Narrows and Maud Island.

The trail ends at the power lines that extend over Seymour Narrows, the site of the infamous Ripple Rock and the Ripple Rock explosion of 1958.

This trail, 19 km north of Campbell River, is not recommended for small children.

Lady Falls – (1 km) – This easy 20 minute round trip walk to the falls is just past the Buttle Lake

Campground on Highway 28. At the end of the path is a viewing platform directly across from the falls that receives some mist from the falls.

Lower Myra Falls – (1 km) – Beautiful cascading waterfalls are the reward at the end of this short hike. You can climb up and down the falls and swim in some of the calmer pools. Travel Highway 28 and take Westmin Road south to the Lower Myra Falls parking lot.

Bedwell Lake Trail – (about 4 hours) Located in Strathcona Provincial Park this day use trail has an elevation gain of 600 metres. It ascends through a steep forested valley with some stairs and bridge crossings. At the top is a subalpine area with two lakes. Beware of

the presence of black bears in this area.

Access the trailhead from the south end of Buttle Lake.

Crest Mountain Trail – (10 kms) This physically demanding trail is steep with an elevation change of 1300 metres, but the views of Kings Peak and Elkhorn Mountain make it well worth the effort.

To get to the trailhead follow Highway 28.

Chinese Mountains, Quadra Island (5kms) Chinese Mountains are well known on Quadra Island. A popular hiking destination; this is one landmark you won’t want to miss. Trails to the top of the south and north peaks access a network of hiking trails up and around Chinese Mountains and nearby Morte Lake..

The Campbell River region is blessed with numerous mountain biking trails that range from easy family tracks to difficult back country trails that will challenge the toughest rider.

Close to the city is the Pump House Trail, located between Iron River Road and the Campbell River, features easily accessible, well-marked single-track trails. Get onto Highway 28 and turn onto the Duncan Bay Main and cross the Campbell River. You’ll find one trailhead just south of the intersection of Duncan Bay and Iron River Road and another located west of Duncan Bay Road on Iron Bay Road.

The Snowden Demonstration Forest west of Campbell River and north of Highway 28 near Loveland Bay Provincial Park offers more than 30kms of trails suited to all levels of expertise and includes the Frog Lake and Lost Lake trail systems. Since opening in May of 2015 the Elk Falls suspension bridge has drawn thousands of visitors to Elk Falls Park.

The roaring Elk Falls offers breathtaking views of one of the area’s jewels.

The 60 metre long bridge is suspended 64 metres above the canyon floor and takes you above the falls; when the wind blows just right, you can feel the mist coming off the falls.

Trail areas established to link the new

parking lot to the bridge, and two viewing platforms offer iconic views of Elk Falls.

The Elks Falls Suspension Bridge is a legacy of the Campbell River Rotary Club.

The project was funded through Rotary dollars and grants from the federal government, Island Coastal Economic Trust, and BC Hydro which also shared environmental and geo-technical reports with Rotary to help make the project possible.

Storey Creek Golf Club, just south of Campbell River on Highway 19A, is consistently ranked in the top 10 public courses in BC. At Saratoga Speedway just south of Campbell River the season of fun starts in May with fireworks and ends in September with more fireworks. In between, there is nothing but sparks flying around the best tracks in BC.

The racing is kept fair and clean with a state of the art computerized scoring system that uses transponders mounted on every race vehicle and a team of dedicated race officials who love the sport.

First and foremost, Saratoga Speedway is a family entertainment facility. The aim is to provide good, clean, safe fun at a reasonable price for the audience and participants.

The track is a paved 3/8th mile D shaped oval, with a banked first and second corner, 1/16th mile drag strip, and a 5/8th mile extended course for motorcycles and slalom events.

Racing goes every Saturday evening with gates opening at 5:30. This season promises all the favourite racing divisions: Crash to Pass, Road Runners, Hornet Cars, Mad Max Extreme Racing

Don’t miss the Shoreline Arts Competition from June 21 to 25, featuring carvers creating works of art out of raw cedar logs. The howl of chainsaws starts and magic emerges.

By the weekend, most of the logs are almost completely transformed into the art the carvers have imagined.

On Saturday, there is a quick carve contest where carvers have an hour to transform smaller logs, and the results are then auctioned off to the public, with the carver sharing in the proceeds.

On Sunday, most carvings are painted, varnished, and ready for judging. The public gets to vote for their favourite but professional carvers make the decision as to which carvings win the cash prizes in each category.

Remaining carvings then are adopted by sponsoring companies or individuals to enjoy. So if you would like a carving, either buy the winning raffle ticket, be the most generous sponsor for second choice, or buy a quick-carve at auction!

From the city core to the beaches to the forests and the mountain parks, opportunities abound for visitors who are confined to wheelchairs.

Wheelchair access to the Campbell River region’s amenities starts right at the downtown community centre which offers designated handicap parking zones and full wheelchair accessibility.

Three local parks are specifically wheelchair accessible. They are: • The Beaver Lodge Forest Lands, an adventure destination with a well-used trail network enjoyed by hikers, bikers and horseback riders and where wheelchair explorers can find trails that have easy grades.

• The Sea Walk between Hilchey and Rockland roads in the Willow Point area, 1.5 km of paved oceanfront trail that offers breath-taking vistas of aquatic life, Quadra Island and the Coast Mountains.

• Tyee Spit just north of Discovery Harbour Mall borders Discovery

Channel and allows visitors to watch Killer Whales, Harbour Seals and Bald Eagles from the comfort of two kms of paved walkways and road.

Outside the city there are several wheelchair friendly destinations including: • The Quinsam Salmon Hatchery, a great place to observe juvenile salmon all year and returning salmon from mid-August to midNovember.

• Rebecca Spit Marine Provincial Park, where facilities include picnic tables overlooking the beach, a grass playing field, wheelchair accessible pit toilets and fresh water.

• The Barrier Free Centennial Trail loop at the Paradise Meadows Trailhead in Strathcona Provincial Park which can be accessed by taking the Strathcona Parkway to Mount Washington and turning left onto the Nordic Road before reaching main ski resort lodge.

You can chart your own journey or sign up for an eco-tour. Canoeing is also popular-the Sayward Forest Canoe/ portage route is a 50 kilometre (30 mile) circuit encompassing 11 lakes, and takes approximately 3-4 days to complete the full circuit.
