Ponoka looking to expand amenities Planners want to bring additional amenities to the Town of Ponoka. A proposed plan has been approved that will feature a new field house to handle a variety of indoor sports while also connecting to the current ice arena. During the summer months, however, there is the fun splash park, built with the hard work of the Ponoka Kinettes and the Lions Club, right along Highway 2A in Centennial Park, which has seen the addition of a new playground and covered gazebos. Summer staff host a wide variety of summer crafts and activities for kids at the park. Ice sports The Ponoka Culture and Recreation Complex boasts two ice surfaces and updated locker rooms for visiting teams and is home to the

Junior B Stampeders hockey team.

On top of the two indoor rinks is the Scott Seamans

Kids have a wide variety of recreation amenities to choose from including utilizing baseball diamonds, soccer pitches, three ice surfaces, racquetball courts, curling and many more.

Outdoor Rink for a quick game of shinny hockey. But don’t let that cool you off, the town also offers a sixsheet curling rink to keep folks busy. Nearby Gull Lake is a much-used amenity for winter fishing or summer swim activities. Racquetball, squash and wallyball Most people don’t realize it, but under the stands of the Ponoka Culture and Recreation Complex are two racquetball . One of the courts is marked to allow for a solid game of squash and both are outfitted with hooks for nets to allow teams to play wallyball, a sport that is similar to volleyball and uses the walls as part of the play. Ponoka Festival of Trees brings joy When it comes to community fundraising, Ponoka outshines them all as has been seen with the popular Ponoka Festival of Trees. Now just past its third year, the festival brings much-needed funds to the Ponoka Hospital and Care Centre. In 2016 the festival brought in more than $100,000. The sky is the limit for Ponoka and its residents, known for their volunteering and fundraising abilities. Along with pediatric support, the festival has ensured the hospital’s endoscopy program can continue to grow. The 2016 festival brought in the big names and the big fundraising dollars and has become a welcome tradition in Ponoka.

Ponoka’s first annual Festival of Trees took place in 2014 and was able to raise enough to donate $59,500 to the Ponoka Hospital Foundation. Along with the big opening night featuring the likes of charity auctioneer and entertainer, Danny Hooper, there was a breakfast with Santa, seniors tea and countless live and silent auction items. The money from the festival goes to the Ponoka and District Health Foundation, which provides the funds to the hospital. Organizers are already in the works looking at how the 2017 festival will be. One thing’s for sure, it’s a family good time that brings benefits to the community.

Paying tribute to contestants, builders and animals of professional rodeo in Canada.

“IN 2016 THE FESTIVAL BROUGHT IN MORE THAN $100,000. THE SKY IS THE LIMIT FOR PONOKA AND ITS RESIDENTS, KNOWN FOR THEIR VOLUNTEERING AND FUNDRAISING ABILITIES.”

The Ponoka Festival of Trees is coming into its fourth year of bringing funds to the Ponoka Hospital and Care Centre. Last year the fundraiser was so successful it broke the $100,000 mark.

Ag society has strong roots in Ponoka With activity for more than 100 years in the area, the Ponoka Agricultural Society is a mainstay of the community. The society has taken its agricultural fair and organized it into two parts: The bench show, now the Home, Hobby and Horticultural Show and then a ranch rodeo. With the development of the popular equine facility, the Calnash Ag Event Centre, the ag society has grown by leaps and bounds. The strong and dedicated board of directors and volunteers help ensure the ag centre runs smoothly. This centre has been a boon for the Town of Ponoka, which has brought organizations like the Alberta

Barrel Racing Association finals along with the society’s ranch rodeo and much more. There’s hardly a weekend that the centre isn’t busy with organizers planning for the next two to three years. As for the ag society, it promotes everything that has to do with agriculture and partnered with Ponoka County, the Town of Ponoka and the Ponoka Stampede and Exhibition Association to ensure the ag centre was built. The Calnash Ag Event Centre crew is now working on an expansion to join its main arena to the large barn. The ag society also hosts a county fair, which is over 100 years old.

The Ponoka Agricultural Society’s history in Ponoka is long and proud. Along with horticultural and ranch shows the society has recently taken over operations of the Calnash Ag Events Centre, a premier equine events facility. TES ABLE RA REASON S E RV IC E F R IE N D LY 2 4 /7 S TA F F E D

Largest seven-day pro-rodeo in western Canada For one week at the end of June, Ponoka swells as thousands of rodeo fans converge on the town to check out the Wild West of the ’36 Ponoka Stampede. The largest outdoor pro rodeo in Canada, the Ponoka Stampede kicks off at the end of June with bull riding followed by daily rodeo performances. This year is the 81st annual stampede edition. Rain or shine, rodeo fans from around the world flock to Ponoka to see the cowboys and cowgirls tighten their spurs, don their hats and ride hard to make it to the Stampede Showdown, where only the top riders of the rodeo compete on the evening of July 3 for an extra $15,000 and the

title of Ponoka Stampede Champion. Things progress quickly with the racing action of the World Professional Chuckwagon Association (WPCA) during the evening at the Stampede. They don’t call it the Half Mile of Hell for nothing. With drivers always flanked by their trusty outriders, the WPCA races take the centre stage for six of the seven rodeo days. The drivers are also looking to be the best and make the $50,000 Tommy Dorchester Dash for Cash, the ultimate race of the event. This year’s entertainment features the likes of Diamond Rio and Tim Hicks but also brings the best performers from the Stampede

talent competition and fireworks that boom and crash. Off-site events, ranging from mounted shooter competitions and cattle penning, to farmer’s markets and art auctions, ensure

there’s something enticing for everyone to enjoy between rodeo performances.

CONTINUED ON PAGE 17

Along with barrel racing action at the Ponoka Stampede comes a variety of western heritage sports, including mounted shooters and wild horse racing.

More options for kids and youths In addition to the many kids’ sports activities the Ponoka Youth Centre (PYC) is a great option for parents looking for after school activities. Along with after school programming there are nights and weekend activities. Add to that the summer programming features field trips plus many activities in the Town of Ponoka.

Youths can drop in Friday and Saturday nights to have a great place to hang out and play pool or enjoy some video games. It has created an option for kids to have something to do. PYC’s involvement is working. The centre has seen growth in recent years with thousands of visits annually from hundreds of kids in the community. It’s a busy

place. The PYC has been operating with another program under the same roof: Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS). Mentoring programs have grown to include traditional mentoring, in-school mentoring and recently the addition of youth leaders at PYC mentoring younger students. Organizers at PYC had much to celebrate recently

After 15 years of dedication to the community the Ponoka Youth Centre continues to be a safe place for kids and youths to come hang out or take in a field trip.

with the centre being in operation for the last 15 years with no signs of slowing down. Benefiting youths, reducing crime Studies show that when kids have somewhere to go between the hours of 3 to 6 p.m. then juvenile crime is reduced. The centre is ideal for kids from Kindergarten to Grade 12.

There are more sports activities than ever for kids in Ponoka Ponoka’s youths have more choices than ever before when it comes to sports. Hockey Ponoka Minor Hockey has teams as young as Timbits all the way to Midget A. The association has a female league that brings together players from Lacombe and Ponoka. Swim teams Two categories of activities complement a strong swimming program in Ponoka. In the summer months, the Gators Swim Club competes at home and away against other Alberta swim clubs. The Pool Sharks make up the winter swim team and training starts in the fall. Figure skating For kids looking to hone their figure skating skills, the Ponoka Skate Club offers programs for skaters of any skill level. Synchro skating and CanSkate make up much of

the club’s programs and when the group is not travelling to carnivals around the province. Ponoka Storm Soccer Soccer has seen growth year over year with hundreds of athletes to check out the many fields within the town boundaries. Ponoka Storm has also played host to provincials several times now. Ponoka Minor Ball Baseball has seen an upswing ever since the Blue Jays started doing well. Kids have come out of the woodworks looking to make it into the big leagues. Ponoka Minor Ball offers a variety of disciplines for kids including baseball and fast pitch. Lacoka Lacrosse Like the female hockey league Ponoka is working with Lacombe to bring its own lacrosse league. The association has grown

over the years bringing a solid female hockey team to the league. Leadership groups Youths in Ponoka have many options available to them. The Ponoka Royal Canadian Air Cadets is one group that provides opportunities for kids to get involved and learn leadership skills in the process. For those with a taste for adventure, the Ponoka Girl Guides bring a sense of community to their programs and give girls an opportunity to become leaders. The Ponoka Scouts and Beavers also bring similar programs.

For those looking to learn more about the life of a farmer there are several 4-H clubs in town including beef clubs and horseriding clubs. Arts Along with leadership and sports is a recent addition to the Town of Ponoka in the shape of an arts/drama camp for kids. The newly designed camp from Klaglahachie Fine Arts Society gives kids a familiarity with dance, acting and production needs for plays and films.

When it comes to kids sports or leadership activities in Ponoka the options are plenty. Kids can get into team sports, arts, leadership groups and others to hone the skills they’ll need later in life.

Ponoka trail system continues to be a big draw Over the years Ponoka has groomed its trail system to be part of an extensive network that allows folks to walk, run, bike or long-board for a good stretch. Along with paved paths following the river valley are systems for the more hardy hikers. Planners have forged a wonderful trail system that follows the mighty Battle River through the Town of Ponoka. The spring-fed waterway flows at a stately pace with a five-ki-

lometre path called Diamond Willow Trail right in Ponoka. It’s one of the well-known secrets of Ponoka that residents and visitors enjoy daily. Nature and wildlife lovers enjoy the sights and have seen wildlife such as deer and beaver in the area. For those who want to give their dogs a chance to run free, a fenced off-leash area can be found on the north side of the trail system. Centennial Park All along the pathways in

Centennial Park are benches for folks to relax and enjoy the view. Near the pond, which has summer trout fishing, is a large stage that has been used for summer concerts and summer birthday parties. It’s definitely a well-used Ponoka amenity right along Highway 2A. A new addition to the town includes a bridge over the Battle, which replaced the 100-year old bridge in town. This new bridge connects to

the river valley trail and to a large residential area, plus has a double-wide sidewalk. JJ Collett Natural Area Don’t forget about the JJ Collett Natural Area just south of Ponoka near Morningside. The 635 acres of land is a favourite for hikers, nature lovers and more recently, marathon runners. The natural area played host to a marathon that took inspiration from the infamous Barkley Marathon.

Ponoka residents came in droves to check out the grand opening of the Siding 14 bridge that connects downtown Ponoka to a large residential area and trail system, which winds its way along the lazy Battle River.
