MAIN EVENT
my
Welcome to the Big Top It has all the flair of a traditional circus, ten generations in the making. With a massive tent with room for 2,600 guests, the Royal Canadian Family Circus is rolling into Abbotsford May 19-22. The Big Top will pop up in the Sevenoaks Shopping Centre parking lot for three days of fun, before it’s torn down and the tents are gone without a trace. The family-friendly circus will bring both traditional and modernized acts that feature a dazzling cast of characters. It’s a showcase of incredible acts and world-renowned collection of classically trained performers
from Argentina, Columbia, Brazil, Mexico, Spain, and Switzerland. From high-wire acts to daredevil motorcyclists, this is the first time the Royal Canadian Circus will be stopping in Abbotsford on its cross-country tour. Acts include Motorcycle Globe of Destiny, the Motorcycle Cyclone, Aerial Strap and Silk, a hulahoop maze, a world-class poodle show featuring twelve poodles from Mexico, and more. There are no exotic animals used in the circus. Joseph Dominick Bauer is the circus’ Ringmaster - and one of the finest in the world. He has performed across the globe with Cirque, Ringling,
and Sarasota. “[Spectators] will be wowed by the diversity of the acts in the ring and in the air. They will be amazed by the beauty of the aerialists and acrobats, astounded by the high wire and thrill acts, and laugh at the many antics and fun of our Argentinian Clowns,” Cathy Sproule, media director for the circus, told The Abbotsford News. She says the motorcycle cyclone is considered the “wow factor” because of the difficulty and outstanding display of precision, speed and guts as they push it to the limits of what’s possible.
Martin Espana Sr., - a famed fourth generation circus daredevil - navigates a chopper motorcycle around a narrow circular rail platform 40’ in the air, while two aerialists dangle off an attached swing and perform daring stunts. “No one else in the world does this,” she says. With cast and crew including more than 60 people, it’s a vibrant show with nonstop entertainment and adrenaline. Many of the performers are members of the same traveling family, ranging in age from four to sixty years old. Another reminder that there is
no show quite like the circus. The entire production has many diverse acts designed to entertain and inspire families all ages with fun, thrill, and incredible athleticism. “Our hope is that everyone leaves the Big Top and looks back on Royal Canadian Circus and says, ‘that was spectacular!’ Then we know we have done our job.” Tickets for the circus range from $25 for general admission, $35 for VIP seating and $50 for ringside. Use the promo code “abbynews” for a two-for-one ticket deal. Details can be found at royalcanadiancircus.ca.

JULIE + GINA’S TOP SELECTS
RECIPE PAIRING: Bree
WHITE RIESLING 10.5% Alc/Vol
METHOD: In a large, non-stick skillet, brown ground turkey over medium heat until no longer pink. Break up any large chunks with a fork. Add onions, garlic, bell pepper, and carrots. Cook and stir for 5 minutes, until vegetables have softened. Stir in tomato sauce, salsa, beans or corn, chili powder, cumin, oregano and brown sugar. Bring mixture to a boil, then lower heat and simmer for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Meanwhile, prepare pasta according to package directions. Drain well. Divide pasta among six plates. Ladle chili over pasta. Place a dollop of sour cream in the center, then sprinkle with cheese and green onions.
Mexican Turkey Chili This family favourite was one of the first recipes on our website and still continues to be my go-to meal when I need a quick and delicious dinner. INGREDIENTS: 1 pound ground turkey or chicken 1 cup chopped onions 1 clove garlic, minced 1 cup chopped bell pepper 1 cup chopped or grated carrot 1 1/2 cup tomato sauce 1 1/2 cup salsa 1 can black beans, drained and rinsed OR 1 small can corn niblets, drained
Enjoy!
1 1/2 teaspoon chili powder 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano 1/2 to 1 tablespoon brown sugar salt and pepper to taste 12 oz bow-tie pasta, uncooked (about 7 cups dry) sour cream shredded cheddar cheese chopped green onions
I often double, or even quadruple, the recipe to feed a crowd or freeze for another meal. For a quadruple recipe, I use 4 lbs. ground turkey, two 420 ml. jars of salsa and two 680 ml jars of strained tomatoes but quadruple all the spices and veggies. It’s best to only triple the liquids if you’re using 4 pounds of meat to ensure it doesn’t get too soupy. Also, for a large recipe I use some corn and a tin of black beans.
PRESTIGE BEVERAGE GROUP Mosel, Germany ON THE NOSE: A drier style wine with tangy, mouth-watering acidity.
ON THE PALATE Apple and spice notes lead to a palate of honeyed apricots, pears and citrus and a lingering pink grapefruit finish.
PAIR IT WITH Pairs well with Mexican turkey chili, Mexican foods, as well as shellfish.

The Farmer and the Foodie The road to our seventh anniversary has often been a steep learning curve as we’ve navigated how to run a food market, create a pleasant work environment and give you a great guest experience when you visit us. We are humbled and incredibly grateful for your support these past years. Upon reflection, my “Top 7 Things I’ve Learnt.”
4. Farmer Rob is still an energizer bunny, that guy never runs out of fuel or new ideas!
1. Our passion for connecting our guests with our own farmed products and other local farmers, great food and sharing ways to prepare it only continues to grow.
6. We love our Lepp Farm Family! Your encouraging comments, helpful suggestions, and latest food adventures always encourage me.
2. We are privileged to live in a generous and safe community. Each new Fraser Valley resident I meet reinforces that our hometown is an ideal place to live.
7. We have the best team working alongside us (see #3) Without this incredibly dedicated oup we and supportive group would be nothing but Join an empty buildingg our and every day we’re grateful ANN I that we get to CELE VERSARY work with each B on M RATION one of them. ay
3. Millennials are exceptional young people. This group has been getting a bad rap, but the majority of our team consists of people aged 20-35, and the best of them work with us.
5. Farming continues to be hard work with long hours. Weather conditions (this wet spring is already challenging), the cost of production and changing consumer trends always cause us to reevaluate how we do things.

Natural sugars are an excellent source of energy. Oranges and blueberries are especially good choices because they are also high in vitamin C, which is essential for the absorption of iron and the circulation of oxygen. In addition, avocados are an excellent source of healthy fats, while bananas contain three essential natural sugars that provide an immediate energy boost.
EMBRACE MEAT ALTERNATIVES Rich in protein and legumes – like beans, lentils and chickpeas – are also excellent sources of complex carbohydrates, and thus, effective energy boosters. Furthermore, eggs, whole grains and nuts are ideal foods to help you recharge after strenuous work.
SAVOUR WHOLE GRAINS Whole grains provide your body with the fibre it needs to keep your digestive tract in optimal condition. A prime source of complex carbohydrates, whole grains – found in whole wheat bread and pasta, brown rice, oats and quinoa – are great choices to keep you feeling satiated throughout the day. But the list doesn’t stop here! Salmon, olive oil, sweet potatoes and yogurt are but a few other examples of nutrient-packed foods to include in your everyday diet. Finally, dehydration and fatigue go hand in hand. Make sure to drink sufficient amounts of water for allday energy!

compete with essential fats in the brain and increase the rigidity of neuron membranes, hindering communication between brain cells. Proteins and amino acids manipulate how we feel and behave. Amino acids are the building blocks of neurotransmitters (the chemical messengers in the brain). The complex combinations of compounds in food can stimulate brain cells to produce mind-altering serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine. Nourishing the brain with the right type of carbohydrates, essential fats, amino acids and micronutrients can regulate neurotransmitter activity, protect the brain from oxidative damage and improve mood.
