MISSION RECORD
In the relative peace and quiet of the Mission Leisure Centre pool, 71-year-old Isabelle Zaoral finishes another lap before taking a quick breather. The Mission resident has lived in the community for more than 40 years, but has only been coming to the afternoon seniors swim for the past three. She started attending regularly after deciding to learn a new technique. “I took swimming lessons for freestyle. I was the oldest one, but for me it was a challenge. I come once a week now and practice my skills.” Zaoral knew how to swim before taking lessons but said she could only do the breaststroke.
“So, now I can do backstroke and freestyle.” But why was she drawn to the pool? “This is open all-year round and it’s somewhere to go. It’s safe and you meet people and it’s fun,” said Zaoral. It also helps her stay in shape, but it isn’t her only activity. She also walks regularly and has her hands full taking care of the large yard at her home. Zaoral said it’s important to keep busy. “I’ve always been active, all my life, so I intend to continue that and swimming is one of those things where I don’t have to depend on someone to come with me. I can just get up off my couch and come.”

Healthy Hints Asparagus
Asparagus is a nutritional powerhouse: It’s a good source of vitamin K (important for strong bones and blood clotting) and antioxidants, which repair damage done by free radicals and can help reduce risk of serious health problems like heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. With a very low calorie content — only 27 calories per cup, or about 12 small spears — asparagus is an ideal veggie to add to any plate.
Egg Salad INGREDIENTS: • 8 eggs • 1/2 cup mayonnaise • 1 teaspoon prepared yellow mustard • 1/4 cup chopped green onion • salt and pepper to taste 1/4 teaspoon paprika PREPARATION: Place egg in a saucepan and cover with cold water. Bring water to a boil and immediately remove from heat. Cover and let eggs stand in hot water for 10 to 12 minutes. Remove from hot water, cool, peel and chop. Place the chopped eggs in a bowl, and stir in the mayonnaise, mustard and green onion. Season with salt, pepper and paprika. Stir and serve on your favorite bread or crackers.

Enjoy the freedom of
Dental Implants This couple has something to smile about. They used to wear dentures, which caused discomfort, an inability to eat many foods and a lack of confidence when it came to smiling and talking. Now they enjoy the freedom of NobelSmile dental implants, which are as close to natural teeth as you can get. People who lose a tooth want to replace it with something permanent, says Dr. Lui, instead of something they have to remove. “Once you give someone new, permanent teeth, you can see their personality shine through again.”

Mission Community Foundation believes in a simple concept.
According to the Canada Revenue Agency website (www.cra-arc.gc.ca) there are several credits and benefits designed just for seniors. Here are some of the most common credits and benefits for seniors. Pension income splitting: If you receive a pension, you may be eligible to split up to 50 per cent of your eligible pension income with your spouse or common-law partner. Guaranteed income supplement: If you receive the guaranteed income supplement or allowance benefits under the old age security program, you can renew your benefit by filing your return by the filing deadline. Registered retirement savings plan (RRSP): Deductible RRSP contributions can reduce your tax bill. You have until December 31 of the year in which you turn 71 to contribute to your RRSP. Registered disability savings plan (RDSP) : This savings plan can help families save for the financial security of a person who is eligible for the disability tax credit. RDSP contributions are not tax deductible and can be made until the end of the year in which the beneficiary turns 59. Age amount: If you were 65 years of age or older on December 31, 2016, and
your net income was less than $83,427, you may be able to claim up to $7,125. Pension income amount: You may be able to claim up to $2,000 if you reported eligible pension, superannuation, or annuity payments on your tax return. Disability amount: If you, your spouse or common-law partner or your dependent has a severe and prolonged impairment in physical or mental functions and meets certain conditions, they may be eligible for the disability tax credit (DTC). To determine eligibility, you must complete Form T2201, Disability Tax Credit Certificate and have it certified by a medical practitioner. Canadians claiming the credit can file online whether they have submitted the form to the CRA for that tax year or not. Family caregiver amount: If you are caring for a dependant with an impairment in physical or mental functions, you may be able to claim up to $2,121 when calculating certain non-refundable tax credits. Non-refundable tax credits reduce your federal tax. If the total of the non-refundable tax credits is more than your federal tax, you will not get a refund for the difference. For more information on topics and services of interest to seniors, visit cra. gc.ca/seniors.

Gord
SAYS Gordon Dainard
Do you need some pet therapy? Many seniors find that after having pets as part of their family for years there may come a time when having a pet is no longer possible. Regardless of the reason this is a loss to the senior’s well-being as many of the benefits of having a pet may no longer be available to them. Some of the benefits are: • Owning a pet, particularly a dog, increases the odds for survival in persons who have had a heart attack and also has increased the percent of people who survived at least one year after hospitalization for heart problems. • People with pets have been found to have lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels when compared to people who did not have pets, even when matched for weight, diet, and smoking habits. • Dogs have been shown to reduce blood pressure in a number of populations. • People who own pets often have better physical health due to the need to exercise and care for their pets. • Trained dogs can recognize some type of change prior to a seizure, and signal the owner. • Parkinson’s helper dogs have been trained to identify when a person is ‘freezing’ where their feet freeze in place while the rest of their body keeps moving, causing the person to fall.
• Researchers at Cambridge University are studying the use of dogs to detect the smell of prostate cancer in urine from human males. • There are also animals who alert their owners to episodes of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). • The use of prescription
drugs and the overall cost of caring for patients in nursing homes dropped in those facilities where companion animals became part of the therapy. The benefits of pet therapy are well recognized and celebrated and a pet therapy program was started in the Lower Mainland
around l970. Today therapy dogs are available through the St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog Visitation Program My neighbours dog Sassy is a therapy dog so I just have to go next door when I need some therapy.
