Jae Buchanan loves to dance and she isn’t going to let something as minor as age stand in her way.

The 97-year-old long-time Mission resident dances four times a week, sometimes for two hours at a time, and enjoys every minute of it.

“I love to dance and I need to exercise,” said Buchanan.

She takes part in the line dancing classes offered at the Mission Seniors Activity Centre on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. The classes can run as long as two hours.

While she is fairly new to line dancing, Buchanan said she has danced her whole life.

“My husband loved to dance so when we went to banquets, to weddings, we danced all evening. It was beautiful.”

When she’s not dancing, she sad she enjoys reading and watching the 10 o’clock news on television. But she always feels the need to keep moving.

“I like to keep busy. The people here are all nice and friendly and they don’t treat me like an old lady,” said

Buchanan.

She also enjoys learning new things from dance instructor Val Saunders. In fact, Buchanan has become “very good friends” with her teacher.

“I go for dinner on Wednesday nights to her place and then we go dancing in Abbotsford.”

Buchanan said she won’t stop dancing and thinks it would be nice to still be dancing when she turns 100.

Saunders said Buchanan is “amazing” and great to have in the class.

Saunders has been teaching the line dance program for the past two years and has watched as its popularity increased.

“It has really grown, I’m really pleased.

I think the variety of the program brings the people in, plus word of mouth.”

She said the class has grown from 10-12 students to about 25.

Chocolate Lava Cake

INGREDIENTS: •butter as needed •2 egg yolks •2 eggs •3 tablespoons white sugar •3 1/2 ounces chopped dark chocolate •5 tablespoons butter •4 teaspoons unsweetened cocoa powder •3 tablespoons flour •1 pinch salt •1/8 teaspoon vanilla extract PREPARATION: Generously butter the inside of 4 (5 1/2 ounce) ramekins. Place them in a casserole dish. Whisk together egg yolks, eggs, and sugar in a bowl until light, foamy, and lemon colored.

Melt chocolate and butter in a microwave-safe bowl in 30-second intervals, stirring after each melting, 1 to 3 minutes. Stir melted chocolate mixture into egg and sugar mixture until combined. Sift cocoa powder into the mixture; stir to combine. Sift flour and salt into the mixture; stir to combine into a batter. Stir vanilla extract into the batter. Transfer batter to a resealable plastic bag. Snip one corner of the bag with scissors to create a tip. Divide batter evenly between the ramekins; tap gently on the counter to remove any air bubbles. Refrigerate 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 425oF (220o C).

Arrange ramekins in casserole dish. Pour enough hot tap water into the casserole dish to reach halfway up the sides of the ramekins.

Bake in preheated over for 15-18 minutes. Set aside to cool for 15 minutes. Loosen the edges from the ramekin with a knife. Invert each cake onto a plate and dust with powdered sugar.

Seniors today face many financial challenges and are often unaware of many tax benefits available. Here a few that may be available to you.

Mission Community Services income tax program: Starting March 1, 2017. It is a free service for individuals with an income of $30,000 or less, and a family income of $40,000.00 or less. The tax returns are done by volunteers.

Caregiver tax credit: If you have a home where you and one or more qualifying dependents live, you may be able to claim an amount determined by Canada Revenue.

Attendant care and care in a facility: Attendant care is care given by an attendant who does personal tasks which a person cannot do for himself or herself. This includes care in certain types of facilities.

Involuntary separation: When care for an infirm spouse can no longer be

provided at home by the capable spouse, couples may be forced to live separately as one or both spouses may have to live in a longterm care facility. This does not mean the couple will be divorced. Involuntary Separation means that the spouses are considered single for the purposes of the calculation of their Old Age Security (OAS) and Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) benefits if it is to their advantage.

Disability tax credit: Tax credits and deductions are available for persons with disabilities, their supporting family members, and their caregivers.

B.C. home renovation tax credit for seniors and persons with disabilities: You are eligible to claim the credit if, on the last day of the tax year, you are a resident of B.C. and a senior or a family member living with a senior. Renovations must be to principal residence to help a senior by improving access

to home or land; improving mobility and functions, or reducing the risk of harm.

Fuel tax refund: If you have a qualifying disability, the fuel tax refund program allows you to request a refund of the provincial motor fuel tax you paid in B.C. on fuel you used in a vehicle you own. If you qualify, you’re eligible for a fuel tax refund of up to $500 each calendar year and may be eligible to claim for the previous four years. You may also qualify for a reduction in your ICBC vehicle insurance.

Principal Residence exemption: Starting with the 2016 tax year you will be required to report basic information on your income tax when you sell your principal residence to claim the full principal residence exemption.

Memories The other night we had six friends over for dinner. Over dessert I asked: “If tomorrow was your last day, how do you think you’ll be remembered? What will your legacies be?”

Everyone stared into their creme brulee. Then they spoke. ‘No time.’

‘The family.’ ‘The job’.

We topped up the wine, and they continued.

“Don’t you have to be rich, famous or dead to leave a Legacy?”

“Isn’t legacy just about packaging your finances and assets to leave to the kids?”

“Hey…there’s lots of time. I’ll get to it later.”

I was surprised. “No, no, no!” I said.

“Let’s take that heavy patina off of legacy. Your legacies aren’t about money, or stuff… or being dead!

You don’t want to find out what your legacies are from your eulogist!”

Here’s what I know after years of studying legacy.

Legacies connect you to others, now. The legacies you create will enhance your life, and the lives of those around you. Your legacies will tap into your values, talents and skills, and use you, really use you.

And that feels good. No, it’s stronger.

Your legacies will make you happier because when you “go” many years from now, you’ll be leaving some cool stuff behind that will continue to enhance your community’s life.

How about a simple way to tell your story, a story that 200 years from now will cause your descendants to say: “That’s great, great, great, great Grandpa Robb. His blood’s in us.”

Yup, that’s a legacy.
