BLACK PRESS’ EXTREME CAREER FAIRS
WELCOME! On behalf of the team at the Black Press Extreme Career Fair, we are delighted to welcome job seekers, students and employers to the largest career fair on Vancouver Island, hosted Feb. 9 at the Florence Filberg Centre in Courtenay. The event will feature Ted Talk-style presentations at the Filberg throughout the day, with numerous companies taking the stage for 15-minute pitches, explaining the benefits of joining their respective teams. “The presentations will be on the main stage at the Filberg Centre. We will have chairs in the area and people can get comfortable, and listen to the presentations, while the career fair is going on,” said Dave Hamilton, Black Press Group Publisher, North Island Division. Each presentation will be 15 minutes, and it will be followed by 15 minutes of answering questions; engagement from the crowd. The presentations will begin at 9:15 a.m. and run throughout the day on stage. Meanwhile, there will be individual company booths set up throughout both levels of the Filberg, as well as at the Native Sons Hall. Hub Barton Insurance, North Island Employment Foundations Society, Westland Insurance, Home Depot, Marine Harvest
and Black Press will all have individual presentations during the day. North Island College, Royal Roads University and Discovery Community College will have their own stage times as well, presenting prospective students with resources to make a sound choice regarding career training/ education decisions. We've compiled this feature to assist your navigation of the fair. Profiles and descriptions of participating companies have been included. Collect a copy of the loor plan and locate the employers you'd like to visit. In addition, meet employers from industries that you may not have considered prior to today's event. In the current economic climate, we recommend that you broaden your search, and consider multiple industries and locations. The Black Press Extreme Career Fair will be the largest of its kind, in the Comox Valley. Black Press expects 5,000 to 8,000 attendees, from Nanaimo to Port Hardy, including local students, grads, unemployed, and new career searchers looking for a better or new opportunity. In an efort to connect the most employers, employees, post-secondary institutes and potential students possible, Black Press

BLACK PRESS’ EXTREME CAREER FAIRS 7
Before the Job Fair 1. Take the Job Fair seriously! You’re making important first impressions. Employers remember only a few of the hundreds of job seekers they meet at the Fair. 2. Check for a listing of employers that will be participating at the Fair. 3. Research the companies that interest you. Learn who the companies are and what they do. (Check company websites if available.) 4. Be prepared to make cogent conversation and ask relevant and timely questions to employers (this will make you an interesting and memorable applicant). 5. Create a one-minute ‘commercial’ about yourself. Your ‘commercial’ should explain: who you are, your qualifications and accomplishments, special skills and values that set you apart from other applicants, and one or two specific examples of how you could benefit the company.
Practice your ‘commercial’ out loud to feel comfortable. Your delivery of the commercial is perhaps more important than the content of your commercial. YOUR OBJECTIVE IS TO SAY ONE TRULY MEMORABLE THING TO EMPLOYERS! 6. Resumes – tailor your resume to the specific job(s) you’re applying for. Take sufficient copies of your resume to the job fair. Make sure your resumes are crisp and clean. 7. If there’s potential for on-the-spot interviewing or hiring at the Fair, take reference letters and cover letters, and assemble a professional portfolio (that contains examples of work and accomplishments).

There are many reasons to consider joining the Forces
10. Make a prioritized list of employers you’d like to meet with at the Job Fair (this is your target list). 11. Plan your strategy. First visit booths that interest you the most (when your energy is high and you’re at your best). Do not wonder or roam! Present yourself with a purpose. Don’t be shy – be prepared!
17. Get a copy of the job fair layout, the employer participation list, and drop off a copy of your resume (if this service is available). Find booth locations of your targeted employers.
12. Take pens and paper.
14. Set realistic expectations. Few job seekers are hired on-the-spot at Job Fairs. Be prepared to follow up on promising leads.
18. Briskly (but attentively) walk through the entire job fair. Scope-out employers you want to talk to. Observe which employers are busy and which aren’t. Make special note of employers that are conducting secondary interviews, either at their booth or in another location (these are the employers who are serious about hiring). Identify the person conducting secondary interviews and seek that person out!
15. Block sufficient time in your schedule to attend the Job Fair. Make preparations to arrive on time.
19. Get a feeling for the entire Job Fair then sit for a few moments to compose yourself and finalize your ‘plan of attack’!
13. Dress for success! Dress in a manner for the job you’re applying for (ie: construction job applicants need not wear a suit). Be well groomed. Treat the Job Fair like any job interview.
The Canadian Armed Forces is a Federal government organization that consists of professional individuals dedicated to the protection of Canadian national values. We have over 100 full time employment options, extending between our three elements (Navy, Army & Airforce). There are many reasons to consider joining the Forces, ranging from such tangible benefits as paid education and competitive salaries to the incomparable feeling of pride and teamwork coupled with the knowledge that one is making a difference in Canada and throughout the world. We are hiring and look forward to meeting dedicated, motivated individuals who are up for a challenge. For more information visit forces.ca to learn about our opportunities.

OPTIMIZING YOUR SUCCESS AT CAREER FAIRS – TIPS FOR JOB SEEKERS approaCh YoUr tarGeteD CoMpanieS: 20. From a distance, observe and listen to employers interacting with other applicants. Listen to what the employer is asking. Figure out who is in charge. What happens to the resumes (are there multiple resume piles, does anyone write on them)?
30. Deliver your ‘one-minute commercial’. Be sensitive to the timing and situation before using your ‘commercial’ – adapt it as the circumstance dictates. 31. Listen carefully to what the employer says. The room may be noisy and busy, but don’t be distracted. Focus, focus, focus! 32. Ask questions (the questions you prepared in step 7 above).
21. Determine the highest level employer-representative in the booth. Seek this person out.
33. Answer questions directly, politely, and concisely. REMEMBER THE GOAL IS TO BE ASKED BACK FOR AN ‘IN-HOUSE’ INTERVIEW.
22. While waiting, review information about the employer you’re approaching.
34. Ask about the application procedure and hiring process. What’s the timeframe? Is there a convenient time to call to follow up?
23. As you approach the table, respect other people’s privacy as they complete their interaction with the employer. When you meet with an employer: 24. Give an award winning SMILE! 25. Greet each employer with a firm handshake. Make eye contact! Be polite! 26. Introduce yourself. Look confident!
35. Do NOT ask questions about salary and benefits (wait until later for these type of questions). 36. Request a business card or obtain a contact name, phone number, fax, and email address. Take brochures or informational materials that are available at the booth.
Conduct yourself professionally at all times. You are ‘on stage’ even as you stand in line or move about the Fair area.
27. State why you have chosen this employer.
37. Don’t let promotional ‘freebies’ on the table distract you and do not grab at them.
28. Try to remember the employer’s name. Glance at a nametag.
38. Thank each employer for their time.
29. Show interest. State briely what you like about the company.
39. If you’re given an application form, take time to fill it out neatly and completely. Remember the way you fill out the
Canada’s natural advantage Think of the possibility of working for a company that sees demand for its product grow every year, that provides local talent with good paying full-time careers, and provides the chance to work in beautiful locations that people from around the world dream of visiting. Marine Harvest is looking for passionate, hardworking people to ride a wave of opportunity, rapid as a riptide, as they build aquaculture into one of the world’s largest providers of protein. Think about a career caring for the fish, the ocean, and feeding your friends and family.

seafood in the world. And Vancouver Island has a workforce committed to excellence. Not everyone, and not every country, enjoys Canada’s natural advantage. Think of the possible ways you could join the Blue Revolution – the revolution that taps into our massive oceans to grow healthy seafood.
Our employees say there are great opportunities for advancement within the company. That’s not all due to our culture – the founding values of passion, change, trust and share – it is because Marine Harvest is part of the best game in town. Aquaculture is a leader on Vancouver Island at providing sustainable, year-round jobs in amazing locations.
You could grow smolts in land based facilities using freshwater recirculation. We currently have great jobs at salmon hatcheries in Duncan, Sayward or remote sites on the mid-coast. You could skipper a boat, bringing people and supplies to every salmon aquaculture site around B.C. You could live for up to a week at a time on a sea site, feeding and harvesting salmon from a net pen. Or you could move around the coast using your special expertise to maintain equipment. There are positions for all types of workers from warehouses in Coal Harbour to laboratories in Campbell River.
Think of our home grown advantage. The United Nations wants all types of aquaculture to feed the world’s growing population and British Columbia has an ideal coastline that can produce some of the healthiest, safest, tastiest
The opportunities are enormous. Aquaculture is growing, Marine Harvest is recruiting, and there exists a very real possibility of having a bright career as part of the Blue Revolution.

43. Keep a list of the employers you meet. Make notes about each company and your conversation with each representative.
After the Job Fair 44. Pat yourself on the back for a job well done! 45. Review your notes, evaluate what you think went well and what you can improve for the next Job Fair or interview. 46. Write personalized thank-you letters to companies that interest you. Cite something specific from your discussion. 47. Call to make sure the company received your application materials if you don’t hear from them in two weeks after the Job Fair. At this time you can check on the status of the position and offer to come in for an interview. 48. Continue to research the companies that interest you. Treat the Job Fair as an initial contact, not the last. 49. Keep accurate records of your contacts, including dates of your letters, phone calls, and all application materials that you send.
Final Tip
50. Focus on learning as much as you can about what employers are looking for in the people they hire. The primary benefit of the Fair is to collect information and make contacts.
NIC helps students launch careers At NIC students gain in-demand skills and credentials that employers are looking for in a supportive environment focused on student success. Kelsey Anglin, NIC Business Administration degree alumni, said that the personalized attention and study abroad experience she received as a student widened her horizons and launched her career as a commercial banking manager. “NIC is great because there’s a lot at your fingertips,” she said. “I graduated with study abroad experience, no student loans, a quality education and a great job.” “NIC has supported me through bursaries, scholarships and so much encouragement,” said Dawn Tisdale, who graduated from NIC with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing last year. “I am so grateful to have taken my degree in such a beautiful setting, with highly engaged faculty, a strong student body and friendly, helpful administration.” NIC offers a wide range of services and resources to help students reach their goals. This includes everything from financial aid and educational advising to hands-on learning with expert faculty who are invested in student success. “It’s exciting to meet students who are exploring how college can help them reach their goals,” said NIC Recruiter Danielle Hoogland. “Our lower tuition, phenomenal instructors and smaller class sizes are part of what makes me so excited to share what North Island College has to offer.” Hoogland, along with Danean Laird, NIC’s human resources manager and Anita Budisa-Bonneau, NIC’s work integrated education coordinator, will be on-hand to answer questions throughout the day February 9 as they connect with prospective students and job seekers at NIC’s career fair booth. If individuals still have questions after career fair, NIC’s educational advisors are always available to help prospective students choose programs and classes, fill out application forms and apply for funding.

Seven mistakes to avoid during a job interview You’ve been asked to go for a job interview and you’re thrilled about it! To ensure that everything goes well, try to avoid making the following common mistakes.
in the job and the company. However, don’t ask about wages and vacations at the outset.
1. Arriving late. Being late for an interview demonstrates a lack of respect, professionalism and organization.
5. Being arrogant. You need to be confident and promote yourself without sounding arrogant. Don’t exaggerate or tell lies under any circumstances.
2. Being careless about your appearance. It’s better to be overdressed than too casual. Be sure to wear an outfit you feel comfortable in. Extravagant jewellery and overpowering perfumes should be avoided.
6. Talking too much or too little. Don’t go on and on about all your experiences and don’t tell your life story to your potential employer. Conversely, answers that are too short give the impression that you’re not really interested in the job.
3. Being unprepared. You must be able to recall your entire working career and be prepared to answer trick questions. Find out about the company, study the job description so you can clearly explain why this particular post interests you.
7. Appearing too stressed. Speak in a firm voice, control any nervous tics and avoid fidgeting. Be mindful of your body language. Smile, make eye contact with the interviewer, don’t cross your arms and don’t fiddle with anything.
4. Not asking questions. Not having any questions prepared shows a lack of interest

When it comes to community news in BC, Black Press stands above rest Blackthe Press
Editorial 1/2 PAGE
When it comes to community news in British Columbia, there is one source that stands above the rest. Black Press is recognized as the gold standard for community news, and it's no wonder; with more than 190 community, daily and urban publications, 14 press facilities and more than 160 websites in B.C., Alberta, Washington, Hawaii and Ohio, the proof is in the product. “Our core business is community journalism... and community journalism is alive and prospering,” said Rick O'Connor, president and chief executive oficer of Black Press Group Ltd. One reason why community newspapers continue to thrive, in an era where large-market publications are struggling, is the limited resources for people to attain news about their home communities. Whereas cities such as Vancouver, Toronto or Ottawa have a wealth of various news sources, from multiple television stations, to numerous online-only publications, in communities such as Courtenay and Campbell River, the reliance upon the community newspaper to report the facts in a balanced and professional manner is paramount.
“Can you imagine a place and time, or how you would feel about your community, if there was no (community newspaper)? You would not have the depth of journalism that you need in communities, for them to stay healthy. Who is going to tell the stories? Who is going to hold the (local governments) accountable? It comes down to community journalism.” O'Connor explained there is a certain level of pride that comes with being involved in a community newspaper.
“It is very rewarding to be a person of inluence in your community when it comes to promoting it, or helping customers build their businesses,” he said. “When you are involved in community journalism, you play such an important role. I do think what we do is critical for democracy and critical for the community's health. “You're not just making widgets; you're creating something that has value to people. And when you see the impact of what your journalism and the work you do has... on other people and communities, it makes you feel good.” There was a time when the newspaper business started and ended with a press run. Those days are long past, and Black Press leads the ways in regards to multi-platform news gathering and distribution. “I know young people these days are very much into digital applications, and so are we,” said O'Connor. “So it really is a perfect fit.” Visit the Black Press booth at the Black Press Extreme Career Fair, Feb. 9 at the Florence Filberg Centre. Check out the website at blackpress.ca beforehand, to see what career opportunities are currently available throughout the company.

Earn money in a career you care about — without spending years in a classroom It’s a perk of attending Discovery Community College (DCC), which has designated schools on Vancouver Island (Courtenay, Campbell River, Parksville and Nanaimo) and the Lower Mainland (Surrey and Maple Ridge). Each facility includes computer and medical labs, well-lit classrooms, common areas and student parking. With a 96 per cent job placement rate in 2015, the college is committed to hands-on training and to graduating work-ready students who are sought after by employers. Its objectives include the following:
exception of practical nursing, each program can be completed in less than one year. Specialized career training programs are designed to equip students with the knowledge and practical experience needed to achieve career goals in a short period of time. As part of its goal to offer the best hands-on training to students, Discovery has formed alliances with numerous community partners. It is also designated by the Private Training Institution Branch under the Ministry of Advanced Education, formally PCTIA. Designation is a process undertaken by schools that wish to prove their excellence by external standards, and to increase consumer confidence in their educational product. Because DCC has completed the designation process, students can rest assured that Discovery exceeds academic standards in terms of performance in educational and administrative areas, competence of instructional staff, and satisfaction rates with students.

Whether searching for a new career, or seeking to improve professional or financial standing, Royal Roads University offers tools and techniques required to be effective after graduation.
In addition to bachelor programs, the university offers a variety of graduate studies, which include Master of Arts in Leadership and Management, Environmental Practice, Professional Communication and Tourism Management. Some programs have the option of either blended or on campus delivery.
ROYAL ROADS Editorial
“We do things a little differently,” explains Andrea Boyes, education advisor for Royal Roads. “We have an online learning model that allows you to work while you complete your degree, or our blended model which has online courses and on-campus residencies.” She adds both allow students to keep working full-time and gives the opportunity for individuals to go back to school without having to leave their job. While many programs are aimed at getting students into the workforce as quickly as possible, the university does offer third and fourth year university courses in bachelor programs, explains Boyes.
Unlike traditional universities, bachelor degrees are ‘accelerated’ and two years worth of courses can be completed in a 12-month time frame. “Learning is really applied, and we want have immersion into the workplace. We encourage students to work on projects that fit their workplace.” A university since 1995, Royal Roads has been providing education since 1940. Their learning and teaching model helps students gain effective skills that can be applied immediately to careers. Royal Roads’ cohort model features group-based course work, providing a resource of like-minded peers for students to share, challenge and grown throughout their program.
Boyes adds there is also one doctoral program offered: Doctor of Social Sciences. There is no firm start date for students looking to apply, as many programs “keep going straight through the year, and with some of the blended programs, there is no break.” Another aspect which makes Royal Roads different is their flexible admission policy. Boyes explains the university places a high values on work experience - as much as previous education - in the admission process. For more information on admission and the Victoria campus, visit royalroads.ca.

Please come see us at the Black Press Extreme Career Fair February 9, 2017 From down Island to across North America, Forest Coach Tours is committed to the highest level of bus tour and charter service.
Tours include shopping, theatre, lunch, Ikea and casino trips.
Customer service is what husband-and-wife owners Sherry and Phred Judson have prided themselves on throughout their 30 years in running the Parksville-based business.
They guarantee fair pricing, and encourage customers to bring quotes from any other charter company and Forest Coach Tours will match the price; they also promise to return phone calls or emails within eight hours.
“There is a huge appeal - particularly with seniors,” explains Sherry, who adds the company provides day, overnight and five-day trips. She stresses the company’s service is unparalleled in the transportation industry, and it’s their goal that they exceed their customer’s expectations. In addition to tours across Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland, Forest Coach Tours hosts tours to the U.S. The company also provides charters with their fleet of four buses to fit any size of group - including schools, sports team and church groups. Their fleet – a 29-passenger tour bus, a 47-passenger coach, a 48-passenger coach and a 56-passenger coach – can accommodate any group. All fleet vehicles are touring coaches, with reclining seats, full sound and video equipment and air conditioning. Hostesses and translators are available. With four drivers, the company offers charters anywhere in North America, special ski packages and more, but Sherry says currently the more popular trips are to the casinos near Vancouver, due to the U.S. dollar.
All tour trips pick up in Campbell River, Courtenay, Qualicum Beach, Parksville and Nanaimo. Sherry says while they are entering their third decade in business, not much has changed within the industry. She notes the most important part of their company is keeping up with updated equipment and technology. Currently, Forest Coach Tours is up for sale, as the couple is looking to retire. “We’re hoping someone a bit younger might be interested and would do more trips,” Sherry adds.
