Seniors and students can learn a lot from each other and Mission’s Lifetime Learning Centre is promoting programs and activities that both can enjoy.

On Dec. 14, the fourth annual Intergenerational Christmas Dinner and Sing-a-Long took place at the centre.

Young and old alike enjoyed a full Christmas dinner, served by the students at Fraserview School.

The event was offered as part of the Linking Hands Through the Generations Program which is an initiative for seniors, youth and mutual mentorships. This interactive, intergenerational community project includes the School District of Mission and both the Fraserview Learning Centre and Riverside College students, along with community partners.

The Linking Hands project is designed to engage youth and seniors in intergenerational mentoring and to promote connections between these two communities of learners.

Key components of this project are technology, literacy, communitybuilding and changing lives through education.

This initiative promotes volunteerism among seniors and youth; engages seniors in the community through the mentoring of others; supports social participation from our diverse populations; supports literacy, health, and community building; bridges the gap and builds ties between youth and seniors; and assists youths/students to develop life and workplace skills while promoting the acquisition of technology-related life skills for seniors.

There are plenty of programs to choose from including the Intergenerational Garden. The garden allows seniors who no longer have the space or mobility to garden to share their passion and pass on their knowledge to students.

It is one of Lifetime Learning’s most popular programs.

Another example of seniors and youths working together are Tech Time sessions where the students become the mentors. Seniors are encouraged to bring in their cell phones and tablets and have the students show them how to fix or just properly use then, if needed.

Currently under construction is the new Intergenerational Walking Path which will be located at the Fraserview Learning Centre on Seventh Avenue in Mission.

Funded by the federal government’s New Horizons for Seniors Program, this year-long project engages youth and seniors in intergenerational mentoring, promoting connections and collaborative partnerships between these two communities of learners.

This project enables seniors and students to share and learn new skills in the research, design, construction and implementation of the path. Once completed, the path will be available to students and the community at large for their wellness and fitness programs.

The holiday season is here and you may be enjoying a bit more festive food and drink than you usually do. A new year is approaching and it may be time to set some healthy eating goals.

Healthy eating is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. It will help keep you looking good and feeling great! These simple guidelines will help you eat well for 2017.

1. Go for whole grains Make at least half your grain choices whole grains. Examples of whole grains are whole grain wheat, whole oats or oatmeal, pot barley and bulgur. Whole grains are higher in vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients (natural plant compounds) than refined grains.

Research shows that a diet rich in whole grains is heart healthy.

2. Load up on vegetables and fruit Vegetables and fruit are packed with nutrients and fiber, so enjoy a wide variety of them. Try to include at least one dark green and one orange veggie daily.

3. Make your day with milk products Milk products are packed with protein, calcium and B vitamins.

And they’re delicious! Enjoy 500mL (two cups) of milk or fortified soy beverage every day for boneboosting vitamin D. 4. Go lean and alternative Meat and meat alternatives are a good source of protein, iron, zinc and other nutrients. Make lean choices and prepare them with little or no added fat. Enjoy alternatives like legumes (kidney beans, chick peas and lentils) and tofu often.

5. Choose healthier fats Fats and oils add a lot of flavour to food, and they help us absorb some nutrients. But diets higher in unhealthy fats are also linked to health risks such heart disease.

Enjoy a small amount – 30 to 45 mL (2 to 3 Tbsp) – of healthier unsaturated fat each day. Limit saturated and trans fats. Healthier unsaturated fats come from foods such as avocados, nuts and seeds as well as oils such as olive, canola, flaxseed or nut oils.

Eat balance meals, everything in moderation and get up and move your body to kick start your goals towards a healthier lifestyle.

INGREDIENTS: •1 1/2 cups leftover stuffing •2 celery stalks chopped •2 carrots peeled and sliced •1 onion peeled and diced •2 bay leaves •1 tablespoon poultry seasoning •1 teaspoon ground sage •2 1/2 quarts chicken broth •garlic •salt to taste •ground black pepper to taste •2 cups (uncooked) regular long-grain white rice • 1 (16 ounce) package frozen green peas

PREPARATION: Place the turkey carcass in a large, deep pot, and add the stuffing, celery, carrots, onion, bay leaves, poultry seasoning, sage, and chicken broth. What Tom Hanks Taught us About Loneliness in Seniors

Pitch the tent? Start the campfire? Personalize the family campsite?

Hollywood celebrity Tom Hanks worked hard on his campsite in the blockbuster film Cast Away (2000). In his Oscar nominated performance, Hanks battles a classic concept known as the “7 Enemies of Survival”.

7 Enemies of Survival: Pain, cold, thirst, hunger, fatigue, boredom, and loneliness.

Although simple, the “7 Enemies of Survival” are important in wilderness training. It provides awareness for if a survival situation were to occur.

But how does this relate to seniors?

Throughout this article, we will discuss how camping (with Tom Hanks), is similar to a senior living in isolation.

We will draw from Hanks’ experiences for examples and relate it to seniors’ issues. Tips on how to assist your loved ones will follow.

RELATING BOREDOM & LONELINESS TO SENIORS Hanks experienced that boredom and loneliness were the most difficult enemies to handle on a deserted island.

This is exactly the same case for seniors isolated in their homes. The first five enemies are physical issues – they are easy to deal with individually. The tough ones are the mental issues of boredom and loneliness. These cannot be dealt with alone. Isolated seniors

may lose their sense of belonging if they lack friends in community.

Worse is if these seniors have physical disabilities and cannot go out. This loss of purpose may cause discouragement, and impair the strongest minds. Many claim to lose their will power, and creep into depression.

Hanks developed boredom and loneliness unexpectedly.

Many people (of all ages) do not believe in loneliness. It is seen as being mentally weak.

But honestly, who would admit they are lonely? Would you think twice before saying that out loud? Mental health stigma is unfortunately very present amongst the public. It is a societal issue and many countries have recognized that.

For example, a recently released New York Times article “Researchers Confront an Epidemic of Loneliness” references many issues related to loneliness. The article describes how mental feelings of loneliness can impact the physical body. There is more than just an increased stress response and a decreased immune system (white cell count). To summarize the other findings by the article, loneliness impairs mobility, decreases performance of daily activities, and increases the risk of early death (more than obesity).

Hanks created a friend to combat loneliness and iconically named him Wilson.

Although not stranded

on an island like Hanks, isolated seniors may not speak to anybody for days. Some seniors only interact with the grocery store clerk twice a week. Others have trouble getting to the grocery store, coffee shop, or community center. These seniors with physical mobility issues are literally stranded (like Hanks) in their own homes.

The New York Times article begins with introducing a breakthrough UK telephone service called the Silver Line Helpline. A description is given of a telephone operator having a spirited conversation.

They are chatting about the caller’s 81st birthday last week. The conversation quickly turns sour when the operator asks “who did you celebrate with?”.

With the answer “No one…”, it was clear she had been alone for a week.

Like Hanks and many other mammals, a basic need of human beings is contact with other people.

WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT IT? Be present with your loved ones.

Having quality time with your loved ones does not mean you have to do an activity. Lunch out every time you are together should not be a requirement. In fact, you do not have to do anything at all. Being present with them and doing absolutely nothing together is completely fine.

For example, sitting together over coffee while reading separate

material works. In this case, you are physically present together without an interacting activity. This is enough to help loneliness.

Connect your loved one to the community. Like stated above, a support network of friends is very important.

Whether it is a nonprofit, or community center group, these social connections give a reason to get up in the morning. Just getting out of the house, and interacting is the key.

It is never too late to

start! A group exercise group is even better: it provides physical and mental stimulation.

Help do your part.

Simply put, make sure your loved ones are socially supported!
