Frank Hewitt spent most of his adult life in the Canadian military.

The 89-year-old Mission resident began his career in the army from 1944-45, during the Second World War. However, when the war ended, he decided to join the navy from 1945-51 and then the air force from 1951-79.

“At the end of the war they had so many thousand soldiers that they were letting people go,” explained Hewitt.

Having been discharged from the army, he needed to find another career.

“So, I got out and I found out the navy was recruiting. So I went down and joined.”

While in the navy, Hewitt met and married a girl, his wife Jenny. The marriage is what convinced him to change jobs one more time.

“I got married while in the navy and they sent me to sea for nine months.

So I decided to get out and go to the air force because you could take your family with you.”

The two met when they were both guests at a mutual friend’s wedding.

They hit it off and have now been married for 66 years.

As Hewitt’s career continued, he reached the rank of Sergeant. He spent most of his time in the air force as a weapons tech. He said that meant he was involved with “everything that goes bang, or makes it go bang.”

Hewitt decided to join the army when he was just 16 years old.

“The war was on and it was just the thing to do,” he explained.

The military was also in his blood as his father was in the Royal Flying Core during the First World War. As a young soldier, Hewitt didn’t see a lot of action. When he was in Dartmouth, England officials told him he was too young to go overseas and sent him to take a course in weapons carriers.

At least that’s what Hewitt said. His wife Jenny has a different story.

“When he was a boy soldier, he was sent over as a dispatch rider in London,” she explained.

Jenny said Hewitt was riding a motorcycle in London and the bombs were falling all around.

“He drove into a crater and broke his leg.” That’s when military officials realized how young he was and sent him back for training.

Looking back on his career, Hewitt said he enjoyed his time in the military.

“I think it was the comradeship and the good people I met. I just enjoyed the life.”

While he no longer attends the Remembrance Day ceremonies at the Cenotaph in Mission, the Chartwell Cedarbrooke retirement residence where he and Jenny live, hold a small service each year.

“Most of the veterans here can’t really get out to go anymore.”

How can you prevent a fall

Falls, we tend to only think of them when they’ve happened or when it’s too late. However, the alarming truth is that one in three adults over 65 will fall at least once per year. When a senior falls, it triggers a ripple effect resulting in loss of independence or admission into an assisted living facility.

Falls can happen when least expected as “50 per cent of all falls causing hospitalization happen at home” while “seniors are doing usual daily activities.”

Despite these alarming statistics, the good news is that falls are preventable.

There are a combination of internal and external factors that contribute to a risk of a fall. As the number of risk factors increase, so does the risk of debilitating falls. Internal factors include things like low blood pressure, diabetes, osteoporosis, poor vision and neurological diseases whereas external factors are things like poor lighting, unstable chairs, loose carpets, absence of grip bars, stairs, slippery shoes and poor diet.

External factors are easily overcome and pro-active measures should be taken to eliminate these kinds of risks.

Talk to a doctor: Seniors should have regular check-ups and let their doctor know if they are experiencing any hearing loss or change in vision.

If they have weakness in their legs or feet, this could be an indication of a future fall. If they’ve fallen two or more times in the last six months, get them to describe how they fell as it could be related to medication or something as simple as the shoes they are wearing.

Avoid slippery shoes, long-draped clothes or throw rugs: Slippery shoes, socks, or any type of clothing that drags along the floor can cause seniors to trip. Non-slip tub mats are a good way to prevent a serious fall in the bathtub.

Eliminate throw rugs or loose carpets that could cause seniors to lose their footing.

Install grab bars and hand railings: Sometimes it’s hard for seniors to get themselves in and out of the bathtub.

Install grab bars for them to use as support to lift themselves up and place a tub seat for them to sit on while they shower or bathe. For seniors who live at home, stairs are a hazard. Make sure there are hand railings they can grab on to for support.

Mobility devices: If mobility is unstable and ambulation assistance is required, devices such as a cane, walker or wheelchair will allow seniors the freedom to get around safely.

Remove clutter: Boxes, wires, cords or any clutter that may obstruct a path increases the risk of a fall. Try to keep all boxes or items in a storage closest so that it’s not a potential tripping threat. If there are wires that run along the floors, tape them down or see if you can replace the wires with wireless boxes.

Install night lights and keep homes well lit: Dark hallways, rooms or stairwells can increase the risk of falling as seniors can easily miss seeing objects that may be in their path. Falls that occur in the middle of the night while seniors

are trying to go to the bathroom are quite common. Using night lights or keeping a flashlight by their bed are good solutions.

Consider implementing a remote monitoring device: Wireless safety systems are a good alternative for seniors who forget to wear their emergency alarms or don’t like wearing them. They are often non-intrusive and discreet devices that monitor seniors’ daily patterns. If there is an anomaly in this pattern, contacts will be notified so they can follow-up accordingly.

Physical activity: Balance exercises like Tai Chi, dancing and walking groups are great activities to keep seniors active and agile. As you age, you become frailer and the chance of breaking a bone during a fall is more probable. Regular physical activity helps keep the body strong and healthy.

Nutritional diet: A lack of calcium leads to a loss of bone density and deterioration of bone tissue which makes falls more susceptible. Eating a balanced diet is crucial to bone health as it ensures the body is getting the nutrients it needs.

Get your vision tested: Poor or impaired vision can affect the ability to detect curbs, obstacles or uneven paths. Ensure you are getting your eyes checked by an optometrist at least once a year to see if any eye prescription needs to be changed.

Ask a pharmacist to review your medications: Studies show that “most seniors take five or more drugs with this number doubling in long-term care facilities.” Sometimes a combination of medications can cause side effects and dizziness. Check to see if medications are affecting daily functioning.

WHAT TO DO IN CASE OF A FALL

Push the emergency alarm: Inform a senior to wear their emergency alarm at all times so if they fall they can push it to alert help to come. Emergency alarms can come in the form of a necklace or bracelet and are especially useful if a senior lives alone.

If you’re hurt Call out for help/dial 911. If seniors are not wearing an emergency alarm, tell them to call out for help. If they are in an assisted living facility or condo, a nurse or neighbor may be able to hear them. If they are near a phone and no help has come, they should dial 911.

Move to a soft surface. If they are able to move, tell seniors that they should move to a soft surface, like a carpet, if they have fallen on a tile or wooden floor.

Store items in a low cupboard or by furniture. In every room, ensure that a bottle of water and blanket is placed by furniture or in a low cupboard. If seniors fall, they need to keep warm and hydrated until help comes. They should try to constantly move their arms and legs if they can as hypothermia or pressure sores can occur if they stay in one place too long.

As we age we often experience normal changes in our sleeping patterns, such as becoming sleepy earlier or waking up earlier.

However, disturbed sleep, waking up tired every day, and other symptoms of insomnia are not a normal part of aging.

Sleep is just as important to our physical and emotional health as it was when we were younger.

Are you getting a good night’s sleep?

While sleep requirements vary from person to person, most healthy adults require eight to nine hours of sleep per night.

Frequently waking up, not feeling rested or feeling tired during the day are the best indications that you’re not getting enough sleep.

As you age your body produces lower levels of growth hormone, so you’ll likely experience a decrease in deep sleep. In most cases, sleep changes are normal and may not indicate a sleep problem.

Many cases of insomnia are caused by underlying but very treatable causes. By identifying all possible causes, you can tailor treatment accordingly.

In many cases, you can improve your sleep by addressing emotional issues, improving your sleep environment, and choosing healthier daytime habits. Since everyone is different, though, it may take some experimentation to find the specific changes that work best to improve your sleep.

Loud snoring, especially when it’s accompanied by daytime fatigue, may be a sign of sleep apnea, a common and potentially serious disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts as you sleep; so it’s important to see a doctor if you suspect that you or a loved one might have it.

Stress and anxiety built up

during the day can also interfere with sleep at night. It’s important to learn how to let go of thoughts and worries when it’s time to sleep. If your own attempts to solve your sleep problems are unsuccessful, talk to your doctor who may then refer you to a sleep specialist or cognitive behavioral therapist for further treatment.
