Hot Valley Nights It’s time to shine your custom car’s chrome, rev the engine, and roll up in style to Abbotsford’s largest cruise-in event, taking place every second Thursday until Sept. 8. For the fifth year, cars from all over the Lower Mainland and Washington State are coming together for Hot Valley Nights to raise money for the Abbotsford Cancer Centre. “People can expect lots of amazing cars, from classic oldies to hot rods and much more, including lots of prizes,” says Paul Esposito Jr. of Finnegan’s Pub. “The neat thing about this event is that it’s full of cars from all eras and all over the world.” Classic car collecting and restoration is a hobby with mass appeal for the owners and spectators. Who
doesn’t love ogling a souped-up Oldsmobile or a mean -looking Chevrolet Corvette with a slick paint job?
these amazing cars. It is a family-friendly event and soft drinks are available as well.”
Older cars, some might say, are a functional work of art.
All makes and models of cars are invited, and a different Car of the Night theme takes place at each event. Round up the entire family to enjoy an outdoor barbecue and beer tent, and see some of the coolest classic car and hot rod collections the Fraser Valley has to offer.
360 Fabrication, Finnegan’s Pub & Grill, and the Best Western have teamed up once again to offer three amazing prizes: a $4,000 Clarion car audio system, a stocked beer fridge and a $50 gift certificate to Finnegan’s, and a one-night hotel stay. The prizes will be given away on the final night of the Hot Valley Nights Cruise In Summer Series, and anyone is eligible to enter. “Finnegan’s Pub & Grill is a world-class establishment that provides a full service outdoor BBQ and beverage station for every show,” says Esposito. “And for the adults, the parking lot is licensed so you can enjoy a cold beer on a Hot Valley Night while drooling over
The next Hot Valley Nights runs July 28, starting at 6 p.m. at Finnegan’s Pub & Grill (33780 King Rd). For details, call 604-859-3608 or email email@example.com.
A DIFFERENT SHOW
Many old cars are legends in automobile heritage and the people who collect them know it. They often have memories to go along with the mileage and are happy to share their passion and expertise. It’s all part of what makes Hot Valley Nights an event to remember.

Lay(er) it on me Light layers are the key to carefree summer dressing, especially in the West Coast climate, where weather patterns are never certain. Denim is a versatile choice, with a variety of style options to suit most occasions, including lightweight versions that are appropriate for the warmer months. A cool pair of shorts or cute boyfriend jeans pair nicely with a crisp white T-shirt or blouse. Add a top layer – such as a lightweight cardigan in a neutral shade – and a few accessories, and you’re set to go. Linen is another smart choice for summer, most often seen in shades of white, sand or fawn – providing the perfect neutral accompaniment for, say, a pretty pink top and lightly striped skirt. Summer style is all about looking cool when the temperature climbs.

The detox craze can be confusing, and misinformation regarding the best way to proceed with a cleanse, illustrates the emphasis one must place on learning as much about them as possible beforehand. Detoxing involves changing your diet for a predetermined period of time for the purpose of ridding the body of unhealthy, potentially toxic substances. Detox diets tend to be restrictive, which may not make them practical for everyone - particularly those who may have health ailments or specific dietary needs. Consult a physician prior to beginning a detox diet to ensure it will not interfere with any treatments. In addition, it can help to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of a detox diet to determine if doing a cleanse is the right choice for you.
PROS · Eliminate poor eating habits: Cleanses may help you to take better inventory of your eating habits and encourage you to make healthy choices. · Increase vitality and energy levels: Detox diets can sometimes increase one’s energy and stamina. · New foods: A detox may require you to increase consumption of whole foods and participate in “clean eating.” You may be exposed to new ingredients and discover healthy options you love. · Benefit the immune system: You may find that healthy eating has positive effects on your immune system. CONS · Potential for nutrient deficiency: Restrictive eating may deprive the body of
certain nutrients it needs to remain in optimal shape. Nutrient deficiency can be dangerous, so it’s important to proceed with caution. · Weight loss concerns: If your goal is to lose weight, do not expect detox diets alone to produce permanent weight loss. Many people experience weight gain after they stop a detox. · Potential to overextend detox diets: Some people extend a detox for longer than is recommended in an effort to experience greater gains. This is not a good idea because you can deprive your body of the balance of foods it needs. Detox diets can be short-term dietary options that bring about renewed vigor and health. Speak with a doctor and nutritionist to determine if a cleanse is best for you.

Crispy DISH Parmesan Roasted Green Beans PROVIDED BY LEPP FARM MARKET
Sometimes the simplest recipes are the best, especially in the summer when the produce is fresh and local! This recipe is easily adaptable to however many green beans you have on hand or the number of guests joining you for dinner, and so I won’t include any exact measurements. Just remember to use freshly picked Lepp Farms green beans!
INGREDIENTS: 4 cups
Lepp Farm’s fresh green beans, ends snipped Use thicker beans, rather than very young, slender beans
1 - 2 tsp
Olive oil per large cookie sheet
Freshly grated parmesan cheese, approximately
Garlic salt I love Farmer’s Dotter Organic Garlic Scape Salt
DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 425°. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or tin foil. Lay green beans on a baking sheet in a single layer, which ensures they get crispy, rather than steam. Very lightly drizzle with olive oil, and using your hands, toss and turn the beans around a bit, so all sides become coated with a very light layer of oil.
JULIE + GINA’S TOP SELECTS

ON THE PALATE: Smooth creamy mouthfeel that is rich & textured, more e n flavours of yeast and lanolin along with smoky oak and sage. PAIRS WELL: Seafood such as halibut, crab bisque, risotto, crispy parmesan roasted green beans and most West Coast cuisine. Sprinkle with Parmesan Cheese and garlic salt seasoning of choice. Roast for 10-15 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy. If you feel like the cheese isn’t crispy enough, turn the broiler on for 1-2 minutes. Watch carefully so they don’t burn! These are delicious on their own as a side dish but would make an easy appetizer served alongside a creamy aioli for dipping. And if you love the added crunch of a flaky salt, sprinkle with a bit of Maldon’s Flaked Sea Salt just before serving.

The Farmer and the Foodie Sometimes the best things happen by accident, like learning about Farmer’s Dotter Organic Garlic Scape Salt. Farmer Rob has made many fruit stand connections along the Highway 3 route to Osoyoos, selling them our Lepp Farms strawberries and corn while purchasing fruits and veggies from them which we don’t grow on our farms. Parson’s Fruit Market in Keremeos is one of my favourites, and I love browsing the unique condiments Quentin produces with his home-grown products. The bag of garlic scape salt in his market caught my eye and has become a kitchen staple. Quentin’s sister, Yvonne, a farmer in nearby Cawston, bakes organic sourdough bread in her brick oven which quickly sell out at the weekly Penticton Farmer’s Market. Quentin’s first organic garlic planting had them all brainstorming
ways to market the scapes year-round, and on a whim, popped them into the still super-heated oven after one of Yvonne’s Friday bread bakes. The now deliciously smoky scapes only needed the addition of a pure premium salt, Yvonne eventually sourcing a hard rock mined ancient sea salt from, of all places, Saskatchewan! The garlicky, smoky, crunchy salt is delicious sprinkled over steaks, eggs, seafood, fresh or roasted veggies, corn on the cob, (hello delicious!) or added to olive oil for a bread dip. Yvonne suggests “put it anywhere you would sprinkle salt but just need a bit more yum. Using our scapes that otherwise might go to waste, salt from not too far away and the residual heat from our sourdough bake in the wood-fired oven helps us achieve a uniquely Western Canadian sustainable product. And it’s darn tasty.” I couldn’t agree more!
