uirec Soudée, 24, has spent much of the last 2.5 years on a sailboat with only his chicken, Monique, to keep him company.

Soudée arrived on Vancouver Island a few weeks ago. Unable to land in Port Hardy because of the weather, he went around Cape Scott and docked in Winter Harbour. He was stuck there for 10 days. When he was able to leave, he made his way to Campbell River.

“My next plan is to cross the Pacific,” Soudée said. “To cross the Pacific you need to wait for the good season, it’s not before April.”

Luckily, Soudée has a lot of practice waiting for the weather.

He left France in January, 2014 on his boat, Yvinec. Though familiar with the ocean after working on a fishing boat in Australia and growing up on the coast, Soudée had no experience sailing. On top of that, his boat wasn’t in the best condition.

City outlines concerns about landfill KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

The city has submitted a list of concerns and queries to Upland Excavating related to its proposal to expand its landfill operations to accept non-hazardous solid waste.

The city has requested written responses from Upland on 58 comments and questions based on the final technical reports prepared for the company’s public engagement process as part of its expansion application.

The letter containing the queries will also be sent to the province, which is responsible for assessing Upland’s application for an Operational Certificate to accommodate a landfill on Upland-owned lands at 7295 Gold River Highway.

City Manager Deborah Sargent said the city realizes there is a need for the service Upland intends to provide. However, Sargent added, the city needs to do its due diligence to ensure concerns raised by the city’s Environmental Committee around the safety of the city’s drinking water are addressed.

“The City of Campbell River recognizes the need for a local solution to the local waste stream, including contaminated soil and asbestos,” Sar-

gent said in a release.

“At the same time, any proposed facility has the potential to have environmental impacts of concern, and the city wants certainty that every precaution has been considered to safeguard the community’s drinking watershed as well as the Quinsam River, Cold Creek and other environmental systems.”

The comments and questions in the letter relate to: n Baseline measures of waste already in the landfill. n Baseline water quality, groundwater flow and plans to protect human health and freshwater aquatic life, including leachate treatment/ runoff/spill prevention and keeping dust-borne cont aminants f rom entering waterways. n Plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and how landfill gas generation levels could affect meeting community energy and emissions targets. n How open burning of non-treated material could affect air quality fine particulate levels. n The ability of the landfill liner to withstand storage of hydrocarbons. n Whether chromated copper arsenate-treated wood and aquaculturerelated waste would be accepted at the proposed

landfill. n Long-term site monitoring and maintenance of records, even after landfill closure.

The proposed facility would take land clearing debris, inert construction material and demolition waste as well as non-hazardous contaminated soil and asbestos and requires the design and construction of a lined landfill and leachate treatment system.

The proposed capacity is approximately 506,000 cubic metres of waste to be deposited over 20 years with an estimated annual average of 32,890 tonnes. The Environmental Committee is concerned about the project because it has said the proposed waste landfill site straddles a large aquifer, which is hydraulically connected to Rico and McIvor lakes. The city’s drinking water passes through McIvor Lake.

However, Terry Stuart of Upland told the Mirror previously that safety components would be built in to the system to ensure the city’s drinking water is not threatened.

“Our design will entail a completely doublelined containment,” Stuart said. “No material can spill outside or be deposited outside of the liner.

Stuart said the company has done its due diligence.

“A comprehensive site investigation has been completed, generating a technical assessment report, hydrogeology and hydrology characterization reports, geological studies to confirm neither ground water or surface water will be impacted,” Stuart said. “A voluntary public consultation plan and subsequent report was also completed to understand the concerns of the community.”

Ron Neufeld, the city’s deputy manager and general manager of operations, said the city has already received detailed responses from Upland in March as part of a stakeholder consultation process. Neufeld said stakeholders’ concerns resulted in a number of changes and clarifications to the final technical reports which the city still has questions about.

“Staff met with Upland and their consultant in November, and the company has acknowledged that further discussion will occur on the development permit requirement subsequent to making an application under the Provincial Waste Discharge Regulation,” Neufeld said.

Trevena looks back on 2016 JOCELYN DOLL CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

Though North Island MLA Claire Trevena feels she has made progress on some of her smaller projects, she said that for many people, 2016 has been a tough year.

“The year has ended with the news that MSP is going to be going up again,” she said.

“We see ICBC is going up, so people are really feeling squeezed around the communities. And that, as Opposition, is frustrating.”

Since the B.C. Legislature didn’t sit in the fall, Trevena has been holding public meetings in communities within the riding and gathering feedback to take to the House.

A recent focus of hers has been Internet connectivity in rural communities.

“I think that the engagement of people in the issue has been very good,” Trevena said.

“People are very concerned about the ability to connect, and clearly want to see things happen there.”

She has been talking not only with the community but with Internet providers as well.

She said she plans on taking the information to the government and saying something along the lines of ‘what are you going to do about it?’.

On a hyperlocal scale, Trevena is pleased that city council is moving forward with the bylaw that will prevent having pay parking at the new Campbell River hospital once it opens next fall.

“Everybody in the community has been working really hard,” she said.

“It’s really necessary.”

She is also looking forward to the removal of the diversion dam on the Salmon River.

“It is looking very hopeful that that might be gone by summer, when the people who care and love salmon – and that’s many people in Campbell River – are saying that the drop dead date is July of next year, so hopefully that is going to happen,” she said.

She is also pleased with the tourism numbers and the growing energy in new businesses in the area.

She held a round table with Women in Business earlier in the year and is excited about the ideas that are coming together.

As the transportation critic, this year has been slow moving. So far, she says, she hasn’t made headway addressing the high user fees of BC Ferries, but she is keeping it on the front burner.

“Governments and BC Ferries know that we are aware that this is a highway that needs to be funded as such rather than funded by the users,” she said.

She is also against the government spending $3.5 billion to build a bridge to alleviate the Massey tunnel congestion in the Lower Mainland.

“There are so many ways you could be spending $3.5 billion,” she said. “That is healthcare money, that is education money.”

Trevena believes that it is because of poor government decisions over the last 15 years that the people of B.C. are struggling to pay the bills.

“We’ve got so many things that are squeezing people, and then they’ve got all these extra costs that I think could be avoidable if we had better management of our utilities,” she said.

Trevena is hopeful

that next year will see a change in government.

Though the NDP hasn’t officially released its platform, some promises have already been made including: n Increasing minimum wage n Phasing out MSP over four years n Providing $10 a day child care n Nixing Site C n Stopping Kinder Morgan Trevena said the NDP has its own energy plan that it plans on implementing which involves localizing energy production as well as reducing energy consumption.

The plan involves incentives to retrofit homes and businesses, which will in turn create local jobs.

“We can’t risk our coast with having more tankers on our coast.

I mean, we saw what happened in Bella Bella when the tug went,” she said.

Like the schools themselves, the offices of the administration of School District 72 are closed up for a couple of weeks while those in charge of public education in our area take a break.

Superintendent of Schools and CEO of SD72, Tom Longridge, and board vice chair, Ted Foster, both say they are pleased with how the first half of the school year has gone, and they look forward to getting back to work in January to continue to move forward, improving the educational opportunities for the children of our district.

Longridge says the highlight for him so far this year was how smoothly the transition went for the students of Oyster River and Discovery Passage Elementary schools as they amalgamated with Ocean Grove and Ripple Rock, respectively.

The success of the transitions, Longridge says, “has been a testament of both the closing and receiving schools’ staff, parents and students.

“Surveys conducted by both transition committees reported positive feedback and that students were overall

looking forward to many thoughtful and productive conversations with parents and the community as we consider the next steps of our 10-year Facility Plan.

“This next phase of the plan includes considering a change to our elementary school catchment areas to try to more equitably distribute our elementary student population and the possible disposal of surplus properties.”

Maybe some more ‘firsts’ for 2017?

As we come to the end of another calendar year, I’ve been hearing a lot of talk about how terrible 2016 was for many people.

In a way, I feel bad for having such a great one.

I mean, in 2016 I had my first solo art show, I started a side project making and selling handcrafted wooden drums, I booked and shot my first wedding as a semi-professional photographer, I got out onto the golf course fairly often, I took a couple of worthwhile chunks of time off – both accomplishing things and not accomplishing things, which is just as valuable – and oh yeah, I bought my first house.

At work, I continued to meet and talk to a ton of interesting people doing interesting things, and help them tell their stories to the community.

We were right.

Looking back at the editorial in the last issue of the Campbell River Mirror for 2015 for inspiration and perhaps find some issues that we made progress on (or regress).

Looking back at the editorial, it said in 2016 we can expect more of the same that we saw in 2015.

Namely, tragedies will strike but so will triumphs. We said good things would happen to good people. And they did.

Our economy will go through its machinations – up and down, we said, and guess what, they did. Some things will change and some things will stay the same.

Ditto.

There you go. We nailed it! LOL. We say: Our So what are we going predictions for to predict for 2017? Ha, ha, that’s right. The same 2016 turned out things. to be bang on!

But that’s life, eh? We move forward and sometimes change isn’t immediately obvious. But sometimes it is.

In this coming year, we’ll have a provincial election that may or may not herald changes in Victoria. One thing we did nail down for certain in 2016 is that you can’t trust the polls.

More than one election failed to live up to the predictions foretold by the opinion polls. So, whatever they say about the B.C. election, best just to wait until election day to see what happens.

Meanwhile, we’ll live our lives like we always do.

Campbell River will continue to evolve and people will always find a home here that suits them just fine, thank-you. Perhaps that’s the constant. Despite the vagaries of economic shifts and the momentary misfortunes and mishaps of the day, we will all continue to go about our lives in a beautiful community.

Make 2017 the year that you live a life full of gratitude for the bounty we enjoy and the clean air, clean water and safe streets. It’s not safe and easy for everyone, of course, but we can all work together towards improving the lot of the unfortunate in our community.

Once again, we at the Campbell River Mirror wish all our readers and advertisers a very happy New Year.

We hope that 2017 turns out to be a prosperous and happy 12 months.

pen in 2017, I suppose.

Maybe I’ll build my first guitar. I’ve always wanted to build a guitar, and now I have a space in which I could do that. It will probably sound terrible, but maybe it won’t. And even if it does, it’ll still be of value in that I’ll have accomplished something I’ve always wanted to do.

Maybe I’ll finish writing my first novel or have a collection of short stories or poetry published. I’ve had drafts of a few manuscripts collecting dust on shelves in my house for some time now. Maybe it’s time to dig those out, find out how terrible they actually are, and turn them into something worth printing. Or maybe they’re not salvageable and I need to start a new writing project altogether.

I guess these things aren’t really goals, though. I keep saying “maybe.”

But maybe that’s okay. Maybe I can, as this past year showed, just continue to work hard at life, and let that hard work pay off whenever it will.

some trouble with rust,” he said.

But he didn’t have the time, or the money, to do any major repairs.

So he patched up a few holes and made his way south to Spain.

It was on the Canary Islands that he met Monique. He said that it was always his intention to have a chicken on board for the eggs, as well as the entertainment factor, but a farmer in France had discouraged him, saying a boat would be too high stress and the hen wouldn’t lay any eggs.

Monique laid an egg her first day on the boat. The next day the duo started their journey across the Atlantic ocean.

“In 28 days she gave me 25 eggs,” Soudée said.

During that crossing Soudée also learned that Monique could swim.

On this side of the Atlantic, Soudée and Monique landed on St. Barthélemy, a French Island in the Caribbean.

They spent a year in the area, teaching surfing to make money and fixing up the boat for the journey north.

Monique even joined Soudée on the surfboard.

Once everything was ship shape, Soudée and Monique made their way up the east coast to Greenland. It was there he learned that his father, back in France, had passed away.

Soudée was unable to return to France for the funeral.

The next day he and Monique got stuck in a passage called Disko Bay off the west coast of

freeze within seconds.

They were trapped for 130 days in temperatures lower than -30 C

degrees.

“I said ‘okay I need to stay positive. I am not on my own, I have my dad with me in some way watching me. So I need to fight’,” Soudée remembers.

Soudée had his fuel tanks resting on the ice around the boat, and the wind came back, breaking the ice, and with it the fuel tanks.

“I remember my boat was deforming because of the pressure,” Soudée said.

At one point Soudée was ready to bail. He remembers thinking it was the end, not for him but for his boat.

He was going to take Monique and some supplies, salvage some wood from the boat

and build a cabin on the shore until warmer weather returned.

But after 130 days of eating nothing but rice and fresh eggs, everything turned around and he was able to make his way to the mainland and prepare for his Northwest Passage trip.

There was a minor delay in his plans when he had to return to France to have his appendix removed.

But soon he was back and on his way to Pond Inlet, which is on the north end of Baffin Island, Nunavut.

Acting on some bad advice from a friend in Greenland, Soudée did not tell the customs officers about Monique, or about the rifle he had to

scare away polar bears.

When the officers came on board they found Monique on the deck and the rifle on the table. Soudée was put in a holding cell for six hours. He took that opportunity to catch up on his sleep. The trip from Greenland to Canada had taken 150 hours, and his autopilot was broken. He was exhausted. After customs checked up on him and his story, he was released and he set off through the Northwest Passage. He left on Aug. 1 and arrived in Nome, Alaska, on Sept.

2. Soudée said he is glad he did the passage now.

Soon, because of global warming, people will be able to do the trip any time of year.

Soudée plans on working in Campbell River for a couple months.

He has visitors coming from France, and he plans on returning home for a month before coming back and making sure his boat is ready for the next part of the adventure.

He is living the dream, and he hopes that other young people will follow his example.

“It’s a dream because it is difficult,” he said.

“Life is a challenge, you have to fight.”

One of the best and worst things so far?

Meeting amazing people everywhere he goes.

“It’s the trouble because when you meet some people it is always hard to leave, because you make some good relationships,” he said.

Fire inspector reaches milestone KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

A Campbell River fire inspector was honoured recently for two decades of service to the community.

Stewart Dumont’s achievement was recognized by Fire Chief Ian Baikie who presented Dumont with his 20-year exemplary service medal during a recent city council meeting.

“Stewart is a valued

member of our department and it gives me great pleasure to present him with this exemplary service medal tonight,” Baikie said.

Dumont began his fire service career with the Oyster River Fire Department in 1996 before joining Campbell River’s auxiliary forces.

Dumont became a career member of the Campbell River Fire Department – working out of the No. 1 Fire Hall – in 1998.

Dumont is an active member of the community and has been involved in coaching minor hockey, youth baseball and Crush volleyball.

Dumont has also served as the Campbell River Fire Department’s representative on the BC Professional Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund which provides life saving support and services to burn victims suffering from serious trauma.

Fire Services Exemplary Service Medals have been issued to members of the Canadian fire service since 1985.

They are issued to fire fighters who have completed 20 years of service, 10 of which have been served performing duties that carry potential risks.

The medals, which bear a maple leaf, a fire hydrant and a Maltese cross, are issued by the federal government.

The hard work students will put into researching, applying for and completing post-secondary education is an investment that pays off.

The 2025 B.C. Labour Market Outlook forecasts almost one million job openings in the province over the next 10 years and says the gateway to 80 per cent of those opportunities is postsecondary education and training.

Well, the 2016 salmon fishing season is gone and there are some observations that were made by local anglers who have fished many years in Campbell River.

I call it Stinky Bay but Oyster Bay Park in late fall can be productive to have some fun and hook into coho for the fun of it. Local tackle shops still sell bucktails and tackle boxes sold at garage sales will have a selection of these collectible flies which can sell up to $10 per fly.

I will have a selection of these bucktail flies when we have the open house at the Campbell River Library multipurpose room on Sunday, Jan. 15 from 1 - 3:30 p.m. and at Tyee Marine Campbell River on Jan. 22. Beginners will have a chance to tie up some bucktails and fish them this summer. Tyees Marine will have some prize giveaways and this will be a start of a great fishing season for the newcomers to Campbell River.

Part of how to keep history fresh, according Blackburn, is to be creative.

And while that sounds simple enough, it’s actually a relatively difficult balancing act.

“The challenge of being creative is one that we especially have to work hard at, in terms of programming, by doing things like having our anchored events – like Christmas and Halloween – not be about doing the same thing every year. We’re always looking for fun ways to present things.”

But Blackburn thinks the main thing is to just keep the museum as a place in the collective community consciousness as a place where things happen.

“I think over the years we’ve been seeing the museum more as a community gathering place

than just a place for people to go to look at historical artifacts,” says Blackburn. “It seems to be working.”

This past fall the Museum was nominated for a Campbell River Chamber of Commerce Award of Distinction, and although it didn’t win the award, Anderson says they were honoured to be among the three finalists in a category of over twenty non-profit organizations.

The museum was also nominated for a Soft Power Destination of the Year award. Again, the museum didn’t receive the award, but Anderson says being nominated shows that the work being done at the museum is being recognized internationally.

The Museum also continued to rank high on Trip Advisor, spending much of the year as the top-rated attraction in Campbell River and maintaining a position as one of the top history museums in the country.

“It will be hard to keep up the pace set in 2016,” Anderson says, “but already plans are underway for a notable 2017.

Exhibits are in development stages about ‘Sybil Andrews and the War Years on the North Island.’

Living History Documentaries are also in the works on several topics of local interest, and the museum’s new totem pole will soon be ready.

A Look Back

THE HISTORY OF THE CAMPBELL RIVER AREA A look back at Strathcona Park Lodge

I

n 1930, a lodge was built on the western shore of Upper Campbell Lake for a Mr. and Mrs. Henning Berg of San Francisco.

The couple contracted Norwegian architect Jack Earsland to design the lodge that was to be their summer wilderness retreat.

In early spring, cedar trees were felled while the sap was running, then peeled and oiled, leaving the logs with a golden hue. The logs were then grooved and notched for an interlocking fit, and secured with two-foot drift bolts. The carpenters, Jasper, Walter, and Bill Sutherland, Jack Phillips, Axel Magnessen, Herbert Pidcock and Jim Calnan, camped out next to the lodge in tents as they worked.

For several years the Henning Bergs enjoyed their secluded lodge, fishing, hunting, and hiking the rugged wilderness around them.

When Henning Berg passed suddenly in the early 30s, his widow sold the lodge to Mr. and Mrs. Whittaker of Victoria.

The Whittakers opened the lodge’s doors to the public, running it as an exclusive resort –Strathcona Lodge – for nearly two decades.

In 1955 the B.C. Power Commission announced that it would begin construction of a dam between Upper and Lower Campbell Lakes that would cause the water level of Upper Campbell to rise approximately 110 feet. In preparation for the

flooding, the Power Commission bought out all privately owned properties along the Lake’s shoreline, including Strathcona Lodge.

The following year, in an October issue of the Courier newspaper, the Power Commission listed an advertisement for the sale of the Strathcona Lodge. The ad read: Building for Sale … Bids for the purchase of the structure and fixtures of the buildings at Upper Campbell Lake formerly known as Strathcona Lodge are invited on an as is, where is basis. The

successful bidder must be prepared to remove the building and contents by Nov. 7, after which the Power Commission will destroy the residue.

Wallace Baikie and his two brothers Harper and Jack of Baikie Brothers Logging stepped forward, offering $500 for the main lodge.

The offer was accepted and the brothers set to work. They tore out the bottom floor and drove cedar logs beneath the structure for a makeshift raft.

As the water level began to rise, the lodge rose with it. For a year it rested in quiet solitude, afloat on the lake, until in 1958

the water level reached its mark.

The Baikie family got together, and with the aid of friends, bulldozers, and winches, the lodge was hauled from its sodden raft and onto the slope of Upper Campbell’s eastern shore – directly across the lake from its original location.

Wallace Baikie’s daughter Myrna, and her husband Jim Boulding, were both local teachers who wanted to start a summer camp for boys.

Together, the Bouldings with support from Wallace Baikie, restored the lodge to its former

elegance.

New additions included a reception hall, a larger kitchen and two new wings. Bunkhouses from the Baikie Bros. logging camp at Dolly Varden Point, also saved from being flooded, were floated over and refurbished to make guesthouses, and a wharf deck that had been used for the company’s log dump found new purpose as a boat dock.

From that point on, Jim and Myrna Boulding dedicated themselves to developing Strathcona Park Lodge into a leading outdoor education centre and wilderness retreat.

Another year in the arts: A Q&A with Ken Blackburn Q: What are you most impressed with in terms of the arts within the community in 2016?

There’s never been a better time to be an artist in Campbell River, according to Campbell River Arts Council Executive Director Ken Blackburn. As one year comes to a close and another is about to open, Blackburn looks back on 2016 fondly, but looks forward to 2017 even more.

Q: Tell me about the artistic culture in Campbell River as we bring this year to a close.

A: I think it’s as good as I’ve ever seen it. There’s a buoyancy in town right now that I don’t think I’ve ever felt. I think arts and culture has moved to a more central role in community thinking, and no doubt in community planning, like you see in the Refresh Campbell River campaign. Those types of initiatives have all moved art into a place where it plays a role in the experience of what it means to be in this community.

I think the message that the Arts Council has been promoting for years about the importance of art in contributing to the economic, social and cultural development of the community is finally catching on and taking

It’s just such an interesting time for the arts in Campbell River right now, not the least of which is because economic development and tourism is sort of being re-thought. There’s going to be a new strategy, and I think you’re going to see arts and culture play a key role in that strategy.

Q: Okay, so what do you see as the role of the arts as the community moves forward with developing and implementing these types of strategies?

A: Well, first, I think you’re going to see much more bundling of expe-

standing of the role of the arts that’s just kind of present in people. I think there’s a significant change coming to Campbell River in that way, you know?

People might come here for wildlife tours or adventure tourism of some kind, for example, but you can bundle in a cultural experience or artistic experience for them at the same time and build partnerships between operators and hotels and the arts community to make that kind of thing happen. I think that’s something that’s been slow to come to Campbell River.

It’s been going for awhile in other places, but I think it’s going to start coming to the surface here now that we’re at the point where, like I said, there’s an under-

We did a bunch more box wrapping this year, and I hear from people all the time about how much they like them, and some of the murals that have been done downtown have been really great. We tried some work with the crosswalks, which was great, too.

The work in making public art something that is integral to the identity of the community itself is coming along, for sure.

Yeah.

We’re not where I think we need to be, yet, but we just started, so that’s to be expected. it’s coming along.

But the thing that jumps out the most in terms of specific projects, I guess, is our new Sybil Andrews graphic novel.

Even though we’re talking the tail end of the year and we’re only

getting started, we first pitched the idea back in June and we’ve been working on getting it underway since then.

Q: So, other than the Sybil Andrews graphic novel, what are you most looking forward to in 2017, from an arts and culture perspective?

A: Well, I would be remiss if I didn’t talk about the hospital.

The potential for community engagement in that hospital and opportunity to create an environment in that hospital that reflects what this community is and what its values are is going to be huge.

We’ve been getting the ball rolling on that over the past number of years working with the Hospi-

tal Auxiliary and within the current hospital, so hopefully that will continue into the new facility.

The Art in Hospital initiative is something that started in the current hospital.

It’s a huge project, and, again, it’s nice that the arts is being recognized as being an integral part of the health of the community, and it’s nice that that’s being considered and hopefully implemented in a way that, like I said, reflects the values of the community.

So between the hospital coming on-line next fall, tourism getting a whole new outlook for next summer...and we’re hoping to launch the graphic novel on Sybil Andrews’ Day in April in conjunction with a big Sybil exhibition at the museum, it’s a year filled with huge possibilities.

A

s the community turns another page on its calendar, the Campbell River Songwriters Group has turned their first one, as well.

The group formed one year ago when local musician Kenneth Paul Cooper realized bringing together some of the songwriting talent of the area would be of mutual benefit to them all.

“We didn’t know how it was going to pan out, but I was told by the songwriter’s association in Toronto when we were first about to start up that if I got five or six people to show up for six months or so, they would consider that a success,” Cooper says with a laugh. “But we’ve got a good core group of eight to 10 people – and sometimes more than that – and here we are going into our second year.”

The reason the group has seen success, Cooper says, is the members themselves, their openness, honesty, and willingness to both share and receive.

“I actually really hate it when I have to miss a meeting,” says Roy Ashdown, who has been

with the group since the beginning. “I’ve never come away from one without having learned something valuable.”

One of those lessons, Ashdown says, was realizing that he had some very consistent songwriting tendencies.

While it can be good, Ashdown says, to have a “signature sound that you are known for as a musician, it can also put you in a rut, and all your songs can start to sound the same.”

One way to avoid that rut, according to group member Grahame Edwards, is to be “open to suggestion from someone with a different point of view, and then accepting that input and weaving it into your work.”

“It’s not easy to do,” Ashdown admits, “but when you can do it, that’s when you grow.”

And that’s what makes the group valuable: it’s a place for its members to grow.

“It’s a cliché expression, but it’s true: the total is greater than the sum of its parts,” Ashdown says.

Some members of the group use it as more of a sounding board for workshopping songs that are in progress, while others are there for the ideas and discussions.

“I always like to have some input that I can mull around when I’m working on a song,” says group member Katherine Jean, who falls into the former category.

“I don’t necessarily go with whatever that particular input was, but it’ll maybe give me the thread of something that I can go home and try a number of different things and find out what works best.

Sometimes it’s just getting another perspective that you can’t possibly hear when you’re working on a song, but when you get it from someone else, it can really improve the work.”

“To me, it’s the quality of the listening that’s really quite remarkable,” Edwards agrees. “It’s interesting to me to hear other people’s reactions to the same presentation, for example, and to hear that they got completely different things out of it. If someone says, ‘that’s awesome,’ it doesn’t give you a lot of information, but if they give you something reflective, and just tell you what they heard without placing a value judgement – and I think that’s the key – it can be really valuable.”

at least a semblance of a goal – something they intentionally stayed away from at the beginning.

“There still aren’t any quantitative goals,” Cooper says. “We’re not looking at ‘we want to have X number of members’ or anything like that, but one of the potential things we’ve been looking at going forward is the possibility of sharing this with the community at large.

So far, we’ve kind of been keeping it to ourselves.”

That could happen in the form of a concert – or concert series – or some other yet-to-bedetermined method.

But growth could also just be internal, as well.

Not all growth has to be in something you can count.

“Even if the next year was just more of what we’ve been doing so far, that would be per-

fectly okay with me,” Ashdown says. “We’re all growing all the time through this group, and I’m sure we’ll continue to do so, even if it’s just

Beloved son to Dave Carlos and Diane Jordheim. Stepson to Lori Carlos. Husband to Jennifer Carlos. Son-in-law to Terry and Russ Athay. Beloved father to Dominic, Gage, Zane, Zachary and McKenna.

There was no one on earth like Stewart. He was one in a million. He was kind, compassionate and loving.

He was a great dad, a good husband, a good son, a good provider and a good stepson. He worked as a roofer for many years and was taking his apprenticeship as a roofer. He loved his job and was a hard worker. Stewart made us all laugh and made us cry. He will be missed forever.

Russ Sutherland was promoted to glory after dealing with an illness in the past 3 months. Russ lived his life a sense of moral commitment or obligation in various chapters in his life, starting from a very young age.

At the age 18 he joined the RCAF and was one of the RULJLQDO ˊLJKW HQJLQHHUV RQ WKH & %R[ &DUV DQG & +HUFXOHV ˊ\LQJ FDUJR and supplies in the Artic, Europe and during the Suez :DU FRQˊLFW $IWHU OHDYLQJ WKH PLOLWDU\ KH YROXQWHHUHG KLV abilities to the Salvation Army until he and his predeceased wife Evelyn entered the Salvation Army training college at 46 years of age. James (Jim) Wayne Humphrey January 6, 1955 - December 19, 2016 Birth - December 19, 2016

We are sad to announce the passing of James (Jim) Wayne Humphrey at the age of 61. Well known in Campbell River, he spent the last 20 years as a Realtor, helping many make his hometown their own.

After retiring to the Maple Ridge Canadian Legion retirement complex, Russ became the Chaplain for the Royal Canadian Legion at Maple Ridge for 4 years. Russ received the Ministers Commendation Medal from the Minister of Veterans Affairs as well as the Queen Jubilee Medal for services with the Legion in May 2003. Health concerns required him to move closer to family in Campbell River where he resided since July 2003. The last 13 years was the longest that Russ resided at one locale at any time in his life.

Russ will be greatly missed by his children and their spouses; Dave, Heather, Brian, his 8 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. We would like to thank Joyce Witham for the love and support given to our father in the last years of his life.

The greatest joys of Jim's life were boating on the open sea and his family. He is survived by his son Jeremiah, daughter Ambrosia (Dave), brother John (Lisa), and father Ray.

A celebration of Life will be held at the Salvation Army Ocean Crest Community Church, 291 McLean St., Campbell River at 1 pm on Saturday the 7th of January 2016.

We will be holding a service to celebrate his life early in the new year. Announcement details of this service will be provided in the near future.

Predeceased by her father Douglas Porter, sister Gail Porter, stepfather Peter Skene Ogden, mother Marjorie Ogden and brother Gary Porter as well as her in-laws George and Catherine Sellar.

Penny leaves behind her husband of 51 years, George (Scottie), daughter Catherine (Derrick), son Robert, her two grandchildren Amber and Zachary who she so dearly cherished, her brother Sheldon Porter and sisters Carmen Cheney and Nancy Wilson as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.

The family would like to thank the nurses and doctors at Royal Jubilee on 3 South and the Hospice House. We are a Band operated independent (Group 2) school. We enroll 65 students from Jr. K to Grade 7. We employ 6 teachers with class sizes averaging 12 students. We have a benefits package, subsidized teacherages and live in the beautiful location of Alert Bay on the north end of Vancouver Island.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE: O Recent success as an intermediate classroom teacher of First Nation learners.

O Strong interpersonal, communication and collaborative skills and proven ability to work cooperatively and effectively with other educators in a collegial team setting.

O Experience teaching and planning with an inquiry-based, student-centered approach that is engaging and personalized to the needs of young learners.

O Proven ability to teach literacy skills through “best practice” strategies.

O Knowledge and experience in working with special needs students and support staff with a focus on differentiated instruction in the classroom.

O Demonstrated ability to meet the needs of a diverse group of learners through a broad array of teaching strategies and differentiated instruction.

O Ability to use formative assessment practices to improve student achievement with emphasis on the performance standards.

O A strong commitment to positive and consistent engagement and communication with parents and other stakeholders.

O Previous experience teaching Nelson Literacy, Fountas and Pinnell Leveled Literacy Intervention and Readwell programs an asset.

O A classroom management style that focuses on structure, consistency, mutual respect, self regulation and stress mitigation that provides safety and security for each learner.

O Ability to carry out a variety of assessments, including classroom observation, curriculum-based assessment and diagnostic teaching methods.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATION: O Member of the BC College of Teachers or eligibility to become one.

O Successful Vulnerable Persons Check.
