Tax for short term accommodation approved by provincial government KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

The province has approved the City of Campbell River’s application for a three per cent hotel tax.

The tax, which will be applied to sales of short term accommodation, including hotels, motels, resorts, bed and breakfasts, cottages and cabins, will go into effect on March 1.

Mayor Andy Adams said the hotel tax will help take some of the financial pressure off the city when it comes to tourism initiatives.

“This tax paid by visiting guests will provide a significant source of funding to support tourism promotion, especially given all the major events planned for 2017,” said Adams in a release.

The city is playing host to the Association of Vancouver Island and Coastal Communities convention (AVICC) in April, as well as the BC Elders Gathering in July and Tribal Journeys in August.

The hotel tax is expected to generate in the range of $250,000 annually which matches the amount the city will continue to contribute each year for local tourism marketing, programs and projects.

City Manager Deborah Sargent said when the city submitted its hotel tax application to the province in the summertime, that staff included a petition, signed by a majority of hotel and motel operators in support of the tax.

The initiative is part of a new five-year tourism strategy developed by the city and its consultants.

A new Tourism Advisory Committee, made up of the following members of the public: Clint Buchholz, Harley Elias, Erin Neely, Wayne Nikolaisen, Tom Olsen and Carly Pereboom,

will guide the strategy.

from its current, downtown location for a short period of time while the city transitions to its new model for delivering tourism and economic development functions.

Visitor Information services will temporarily be moved to the Museum at Campbell River starting in January.

“Similar to last year, when we temporarily closed the downtown facility for renovations during January – the slowest time of year for visitor traffic – Visitor Information Services will continue uninterrupted,” Klukas said in a news release. “Paid museum staff will have all necessary tools, supplies and training and this continued service will be provided at no increased cost to the city.

The added profile for the museum will be a benefit for promoting that facility.”

The city says that notices will go up at the facility in Tyee Plaza directing visitors to the museum and updates will be posted on Campbell River travel websites, campbellriver.ca and on social media.

Washrooms and the Art Gallery, housed in the same building as the Visitor centre, will remain open during the temporary relocation.

One of the community’s major sewer lines will be replaced in the next few years but one councillor thinks the city is making a mistake.

The forcemain, which runs along the waterfront from Rockland Road to where it discharges sewage into a collector manhole near the Maritime Heritage Centre, is nearing capacity and putting stress on the pump system.

Jennifer Peters, the city’s utilities manager, said the “critical piece of infrastructure” was built in 1972 and “is in need of replacement due to condition and to accommodate growth in the southern portion of the community.”

During financial planning sessions earlier this month, council budgeted $300,000 in 2017 for design work, another $6 million in 2018 and $5 million in 2020 to replace the sewer forcemain.

But at last week’s Monday council meeting, Coun. Larry Samson said he’s concerned the city isn’t thinking long term.

“I have serious concerns,” Samson said. “I have concern that we’re not planning for the future.”

Specifically, Samson said it appeared from a McElhanney consultant’s assessment report that the city’s allowance for population growth was too small and that if

Area D, which voted down joining the city in order to get city sewer service, changed its mind, the city wouldn’t be able to accommodate the extra homes.

“My concern is we’re putting in a line that is not going to have the capacity to carry us into the future,” Samson said. “Miracles do happen and if all of a sudden Area D decided to join…will this have the capacity to accommodate that growth?”

But Ron Neufeld, deputy city manager and general manager of operations, said that in 2008 an original study was done on a new design based on a population growth of 46,830 people. He said that the model currently being looked at was changed slightly but the number of people is similar at 44,590.

“So it’s been a very small adjustment to the numbers, although the areas that could potentially contribute are different,” said Neufeld.

Meaning that the anticipated growth locations are different now than they were in 2008 when the study was banking on Area D joining the sewer system. Now, the study is focused around potential growth around the Jubilee Parkway area, the area immediately south of Jubilee and possibly increased industrial activity near the airport and Jubilee Parkway, though Neufeld stressed none of those are guarantees.

What will change significantly is the concept for the sewer main.

Instead of twinning the existing line along the beach, council last week approved a new route along the highway.

Peters said the McElhanney report found “significant con-

cerns with the beach route that introduces significant risk to the project and the future operation and maintenance of the pipe.”

According to the report, the original dual forcemain concept, with a seasonal walkway elevated 2.0 metres above mean sea level, has its challenges.

“With sea level rise predictions, the walkway would be inundated and unusable for greater parts of the year, until it will likely be predominantly submerged on a daily basis even during the low tide season. This will render the walkway unusable at anytime, and will also make any required repairs very difficult as well,” the report says.

Provincial guidelines in place for development within near shore environments provide a median prediction of a one metre rise in sea levels by the year 2100 and as much as 0.5 metres by the year 2075, which is just beyond a 50-year planning life span for critical infrastructure such as the new sewer forcemain.

The McElhanney report states that in order to address sea level rise, the city would need to construct a significant embankment, at a minimum of five metres, to allow year-round access to the forcemain pipes. Such foreshore construction, however, is inconsistent with the city’s Sustainable Community Plan which guides development and city growth.

The highway route also wins out in a cost comparison.

The beach route is estimated to cost more than $14 million, which includes contingency and allowances, compared to going along the highway, which comes with a price tag of more than $11 million.

The Campbell River School District (SD72) has received word that one of the two grants they applied for in October for bolstering trades training has come through.

At the Oct. 18 meeting of the Board of Education, assistant superintendent Ne ven ka Fair told the board the

district was “crossing their fingers” for a grant which would “expand the opportunities for our students to work in the trades.”

That grant was to fund the “Shoulder Tapper Program,” which “pairs career coordinators or recruitment specialists with elementary and secondary school students to point them in the right direction with greater mentorship and positive

career input,” according to the government.

They received $17,500 from the province’s Shoulder Tappers Program.

School District 84 – which serves the communities of Gold River, Kyuquot, Tahsis and Zeballos – received both sets of funding, giving that district $22,500 to put towards trades training.

The government says

the awarding of the $5,000 Skills Training Access Grant to SD84 “supports student skillstraining development right at home by bringing mobile training units to the Vancouver Island West School District.

Also, throughout the district, schools are offering small skills-training classes to ensure students receive the attention and opportunities they need to succeed.”

And so, another Christmas.

The shopping is just about done (for me anyway, other people I know have long been finished). The charitable campaigns are all but over. We’ve even had a dump of snow.

Maybe it will hang around long enough to qualify as a white Christmas...but not likely.

So, now it’s that moment that I like. That moment when Christmas “hits.” Up until now there’s all the preparations and things like the annual church Christmas dinner, the work Christmas party, the daughter’s school events, picking up the son from the airport, a visit to the sister-in-law, cards to the relatives, wrapping the presents I’ve already got, finishing the Christmas stocking pole (a Christmas woodworking craft I took on) and...let’s see, oh yes, the capper that puts the lid on preparing for Christmas and announcing that it’s here, which for me is buying flowers for the wife and daughter. There’s more that we can all do and in the forthcoming year, let’s resolve to do more for our less fortunate. Because we are known by how we treat those in need. As a community, we can be defined by that and it’s obvious the spirit in this community is to be seen as one that cares. There’s a lot of work to be done to achieve that level but if we all work together, we can become what we wish to be.

Our wishes for the community are simple. We wish to alleviate the plight of the less fortunate. We desire good government and sound policy making. We strive for economic prosperity brought on by sound fiscal management by government, by business and by households.

As a community, we’ve had to change over the last few years. We’ve had to learn to make do with less.

In the end, it will make us a better community but it has taken its toll. We’ve managed to adapt with a minimum of strife. Sure we’ll argue over policy and direction but in the end, we don’t harbour a grudge for too long and we get back to the business of creating a safe and prosperous community. We’re in this together and together, we’re going to move forward.

There’s no other option.

So, have yourself a Merry Christmas Campbell River and region, you’ve earned it.

there’s deadlines (four of them at work this week alone) but I find it a good pressure.

There’s the rampant materialism of the season and the contradiction between ideals and action in our society but I don’t let it bother me that much.

And there are the abusive homes and relationships which do make me fret and wonder how people can be so cruel to each other.

But at the end of it all, Christmas is a time to remember all that is good about society. And perhaps strive to fulfill those ideals. We try. You see it all the time. The giving, the best wishes, the socializing, the trips back to the family home. Even out on the bustling shopping trail, people strive to spread good cheer.

We’re not perfect but we’re doing our best. And this is a case where I think it’s a matter of reversing Yoda’s mantra by saying “don’t do, try.” The effort is appreciated.

Merry Christmas everybody.

Winter weather reminder Cold snaps create dangerous, icy conditions on our sidewalks and roads. This can send people to Island hospitals with fractured bones due to falls.

Island Health advises everyone, particularly seniors, to be extremely cautious when they venture outdoors this winter, as they are especially at risk of sustaining serious injuries from slips and falls.

Here are some strategies to reduce the risk of falling: Postpone non-essential trips if possible.

Wear proper fitting, supportive footwear appropriate to the weather.

Keep your centre of gravity over your feet and keep your hands out of your pockets to maintain balance.

Walk slowly and pay attention to where you are going.

Use handrails when available, especially on steps.

Use extra caution when entering or exiting a vehicle.

Avoid stepping on ice or snow if possible – or, if you must, walk where it’s crunchy if you can.

Sprinkle sand or salt around your home.

Considering they are cross country skiers, Andrea Stapff ’s Junior Race team spends a lot of time on roller skis, far from the mountain.

“It just goes to show that good athletes and athletes that are committed to performing at a high level, they can come from anywhere,” Stapff said.

For the Junior Race Team, the season runs from May to March, w it h c omp e t it i ons starting in December and ending in March.

For the younger kids, besides fun outings and training camps in the summer, the season starts in earnest in September.

“It’s a hard sport,” she said. “Hard in that the kids work hard.”

When there isn’t snow on the ground, the athletes do a lot of running, roller skiing and strengthening exercises using their own body weight. Stapff said some of the other kids go to the gym to do weight training, but, for the most part, the team

“The snow falls and

the kids are like ‘okay we are done with dry land we want to go’, it doesn’t

matter if we don’t have the groomed trails yet we will just get up there in skis and play in the snow,” she said.

Stapff came from an alpine skiing background. Back in Ontario her parents owned a ski shop and she started really young. As she got older, she got into rowing. With that came a more serious introduction to cross country skiing as she did it for cross training during the rowing off season.

Stapff competed internationally and got into coaching. She originally moved to the West Coast for rowing, but as jobs took her further up the Island, and closer to a ski resort, she got back into cross country.

While working at the Strathcona Park Lodge, Stapff ’s kids got into cross country skiing, and Stapff started volunteering as a coach.

She got the head coach job after the previous coach, who she had worked side by side with, tragically passed away.

“That is not how I would have liked for that to happen,” she said.

“He was an amazing guy and a great coach.”

But the program had to go on.

Now, almost three years later, Stapff is coaching an athlete who is going to Soldier Hollow, Utah to try out for the Canadian Junior team.

“He’s a rock star,” she said.

At nordic ski competitions there are two categories of races, sprint and distance. In

each category there are different age groups, and different distances.

Stapff said the 5-yearolds might sprint 200 metres and the 17-yearolds might sprint 1.2 km. As for long distances, Stapff said her racers have done 30 km.

“The racing and the training that they do to be able to sprint and do distance is a lot,” she said. “They work really hard for a bunch of young people, which

is really cool, which is one of the things I like about it.”

Now that there is snow on the mountain the kids can set aside their roller skis and get back to what they love, playing in the snow.

Stapff herself prefers cross country skiing because it is self propelled and gives her the chance to enjoy the scenery, though she does want to do more downhill skiing.

Offence explodes

Recently, the Nootka Marine Adventures Peewee B Tyees celebrated a 10-4 win against Cowichan Valley. The team has been working hard this fall, and really came together at Brind’Amour Arena, with goals scored by Jaxson Irving, Nic Lapierre (2 goals, 1 assist), Kessler Frazee (2 goals, 2 assists), Tighe Frazee (1goal, 2 assists), Cole Macintosh (2 goals, 1 assist), Carter Banman and Thomas Nelson. Assists also from Ryan Newton and Liam McKinnon. Next game is a home game vs. Cowichan Valley Thursday afternoon at 3:15 p.m. at Rod Brind’Amour Arena.

Time just keeps moving forward, despite the fact that I need it to slow down for myriad reasons.

It not only continues relentlessly, but it seems to speed up when I least expect it.

I set a goal this year for riding mileage. It wasn’t way out there and if I commuted to work part time, rode to the group rides regularly and squeezed in a bit of road riding it would be well within reason and easily achievable. Our trip to California in January had me way ahead of schedule right out of the gate.

The set training plan for BC Bike Race kept me way ahead of schedule up until July.

With 5.5 months left in 2016 I had completed more than 70 per cent of my goal and the weather was looking good.

Easy, Right? Then a bunch of tasks popped up on the priority list well above riding. It

Kids’ schedules are tough on parents’ schedules.

Working at a bike shop in late summer and early fall is hard on free time.

Record rain falls are hard on motivation, but, all the while, I had it in my head that I was well past the half way mark and I could still hit the goal.

With two and a half months left I was 900 km away and got myself

back in gear. After a couple big weeks on the bikes it was looking good again, but then time sped up. I don’t even remember what happened, so we’ll just call it “life.”

So I am writing this on Dec. 20, winter officially arrives later today, but the snow hit hard two weeks ago.

I am 233 km away from my goal and the trails are unrideable, the roads aren’t much better and I work retail at Christmas so free time is less than plentiful.

It’s now, when time is so tight, that I remember all the days I found a reason to shortcut my rides.

Riding home with that spare hour and instead of hitting a few more trails, I would head home as quickly as possible because I had a chore.

Instead of stretching out the group ride a bit, we would head back to the shop for a beer.

Instead of riding the long way to work from Rhyley’s school in the

mornings, I would take the shortest route because it was cold.

Wow, cold?

Did I just actually admit that? In hindsight, these were never reasons, they were bad excuses, all of them.

Now, over 11 days, I have to force in 233 km of riding.

All those times I shortened a ride instead of squeezing in a few more pedal strokes would have added up to more than 233 km, but instead, I went from way ahead to way behind.

Time just keeps moving, life just keeps happening, and excuses, well, are just excuses.

I heard a great quote this year. “You can have results, or you can have excuses…but you can’t have both.”

Gonna be a tough 11 days, but no more excuses, time to try harder!

days are gone, for the most part, but commercial smokers can get it done for you locally.

This past week the salmon fishing has been non-existent in the Campbell River area as weather conditions determine if you can get out or not.

There has been some activity around Duncan Bay Willow Point and Oyster Bay. No matter how you size it up, it’s going to be challenge to get out and get a Christmas salmon in the next few days. In general, lots of undersize salmon are around. A 16-pound salmon is terrific. There are a handful of locals that go out and get it done within a few hours and will get a salmon.

Some may venture out a little further and set prawn traps and hope for the best. To the north of Campbell River, boats will be heading out if weather permits and still around. Denman Island prawning has been fair to good.

Local lakes have seen some ice and snow but getting to a fishing zone may be difficult because of snow-covered access roads. At the moment, as weather fluctuates, I

would say STAY OFF THE ICE. It’s not worth getting into trouble venturing out when weather conditions dictate thickness of ice.

Never mind people falling through ice, many dogs can run into difficulty if they fall in.

Smoked salmon is a favourite of mine and since I first moved from Saskatchewan to British Columbia in the ‘70s, I have had fishing trips when you get a few salmon.

The decision is what to do with them. Well, a fishing partner of mine had an old fridge and the smoking began. The old fridge

When I first looked at it, it reminded me of of an old outhouse but his was put together with recycled grills, a screened metal barrel for wood chips or pellets and, of course, a hotplate for temperature control. The total cost: under $80 without labour.

Give credit to Ed for taking time to build a smoker that will be used in weeks to come.

Fly-tying for beginners will be held in January and is open to all to stop by and get a hands-on lesson on tying a fly and also joining in and meeting people in Campbell River who are learning to tie flies.

Join us on Sunday, Jan. 15 at the Campbell River Library and the following Sunday, Jan. 22 at Tyee Marine downtown Campbell River.

Giving the Hamper Fund a hand

Greg Manzulenko of Capital Power dropped into the Christmas Hamper Depot last Friday with a $2,000 donation. Manzulenkl presented the cheque to Doug Lorenzen of the Knights of Columbus.

ot only did individual Campbell River area residents came through for the Knights of Columbus Christmas Hamper Fund, many businesses did as well.

When it looked like the Hamper Drive was going to fall short of its goal last week, the community rallied and came up with what the Knights needed and more.

That leaves the Hamper Fund in a position to be ready to go with some seed money for next year’s drive.

The Christmas Hampers were delivered last weekend with the help of many volunteers and contributions from businesses. Here are some of the businesses and organizations that made a financial contribution to the Hamper Drive.

Dodd’s Furniture, new to Campbell River and wanting to help the community, made a donation to the Knights of Columbus Hamper Fund in the amount of $2,000. In addition, they provided their delivery truck and driver to help deliver some of the 1,159 hampers. Pictured are Kevin Gearey of the Hamper Fund accepting the cheque from Norm Potoski.

Lyle and Debra Wolfe of the Great Canadian Oil Change dropped off a cheque for $1,000. Here Lyle hands the cheque over to Tony Coley of the Hamper Depot.

Larry Panich of the Knights of Columbus accepted a $1,000 donation from Doug Ellis on behalf of the Chinook Local 630 Society (formerly Elk Falls Papermakers).

Staff of Chan Nowosad Boates did some fundraising throughout the year and the partners matched their contributions to donate $1,160 to the Knights of Columbus Christmas Hamper Fund.

The staff and customers of Bill Howich Chrysler raised over $650 during their best Christmas Hamper Drive ever. It included a large donation made by Bill Howich himself and was used to purchase toys and other household items for the Knights of Columbus Hamper Drive.

It’s the first word you’ll see as you walk through the door of the Christmas Cottage and it’s the motto that sisters Linda Ronald and Janice Vincent live by.

As you walk through the door of the yearround Christmas store and are greeted by the twinkling lights, the bright reds, greens, golds and silvers of the holiday season, it’s easy to believe the joy of Christmas is alive and well. No matter how young or old you are.

And that’s the whole concept behind The Garden Party’s Christmas-themed cottage and greenhouse – that Christmas is for everyone and no one is left behind.

Ronald and Vincent know only too well what it’s like to feel excluded at Christmastime.

“We come from an impoverished background,” Vincent says. “I think it’s an opportunity to fix what we didn’t have as kids. For us, it’s an opportunity to give back to the community.

You always draw from your own personal experience. We did feel excluded as kids and we’re able to empathize with families that are excluded.

“It’s a real, family feeling for us and a chance to re-visit Christmas and make it a good experience for us.”

“All the warmth and fuzzies,” get to people who come through the cottage, says Vincent.

“We get a lot of people come in and get a real emotional experience.

We’ve had people come in here and burst into tears.”

Vincent says some of the stories people share are just “heart-wrenching.”

In one case, a woman brought her friend to the Christmas store to cheer her up after the loss of her husband.

Another came by The Garden Party wanting to take in all of the holiday cheer, knowing this will be her last Christmas.

People open up because of the sense of family and camaraderie that’s in the air at The Garden Party.

As you walk through the greenhouse, guests are invited to make a donation to the food bank, if they wish, and help themselves to a cup of coffee, tea, hot apple cider or hot chocolate.

“For us, it’s about community,” Vincent says. “Sales keep the door open but there’s more to it than that. It’s

What started as a retirement plan has turned into a full time job for Vincent and part-time work for Ronald to supplement her day job.

The two purchased the rural property along the Old Island Highway (just past York Road) five years ago. At the time, it was covered in old growth.

But with the help of their brother, Stan Ronald, the land was cleared and the old house on site gutted.

“We saw the potential in it,” Vincent says. “And we did a soft opening for Christmas last year.”

But Christmas is not where the business originally got its roots.

It began with a 10-by12-foot greenhouse purchased on a whim in Chemainus.

It was Ronald who got the inspiration to sell hanging baskets.

“We sold 75 moss baskets that year,” Ronald says.

adult-version of a KoolAid stand,” Vincent says of the modest greenhouse.

Since then, the pair erected the current 30-foot-by-48-foot greenhouse and from May to July the greenhouse is open for hanging basket shopping.

The pair then morph into Fairy Gardens (miniature gardens with a combination of plants and structures said to attract fairies), before transforming the greenhouse into a Christmas village.

The cozy wooden cottage, however, will remain a year-round Christmas store this year.

“We made the decision we don’t want to take it down and put

it up again. Mainly we don’t want to have our living room full of Christmas decorations anymore,” Ronald laughs.

And when the sisters aren’t busy with Christmas and keeping up the Garden Party, they’ll be spending time at Mountain Ridge Tree Farm in the Comox Valley where the owner has agreed to have the pair take over one of his greenhouses to sell hanging baskets.

And in the blink of an eye, it will be Christmas once again.

“Each year we add a little more, just to make it different,” Vincent says. “It’s always evolving.”

Snowed In Comedy Tour returns T he Snowed In Comedy Tour has turned in to a Canadian success story. In a market still dominated by American acts with American TV credits, a small Canadian comedy tour has managed to succeed.

Like the Tragically Hip, they have done it by touring and gaining fans one performance at a time.

The tour started nine years ago with nine shows and has now grown to 44 cities with 50 performances, including four straight nights in Whistler, B.C. When Dan Quinn started the Snowed In Comedy Tour nine years ago to go on a snowboarding vacation with some of the funniest comedians in the world, he never realized how big it would become.

he votes have been tallied and the People’s Choice Award at this year’s Festival of Trees at the Museum at Campbell River has been given to Thong’s Jewellery and Repair for their “Friendship Tree,” honouring the relationship with sister city Ishikari, Japan. The tree features handmade origami, including a garland with 1,000 paper cranes.

The Festival of Trees at the Museum at Campbell River is having a very successful year, and visitors have been enthusiastic

about the creative efforts that went into all of the trees. Most visitors expressed how difficult it was to choose one tree to vote for on the People’s Choice ballot.

“After having surgery I was home for a few months and had a lot of time on my hands, so I made the origami”, explains Trammy Tran after being asked about who made all of the origami that decorates the Thong’s Jewellery and Repair tree.

With Campbell River being so multicultural, Tran thought having a tree that honours the rela-

tionship with sister city Ishikari would be something different and fun.

“Every year there are so many uniquely decorated trees, and I wanted to do something that I hadn’t seen before.”

Visitors have clearly appreciated the amount of work that went into this tree and the beautiful results.

The trees are still on display until Dec. 31 at the Museum at Campbell River. For more information contact the museum at 250-287-3103.

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Ingeborg Krakau on Saturday, December 10, at age 90.

She died peacefully as she wished, at home, with her family by her side.

Ingeborg made the most of her 60 years in the Comox Valley.

She enjoyed her membership in the Eagles Club and valued all the friendships she forged while catering, with children in tow, raising money for community projects. She had many years in the Canadian German Club with four years as its treasurer. Also, she was the owner of the Royston General Store and the Postmaster in Royston for 30 years. With her children, she was a supporter of the local Hiking Club and Chess Club. Ingeborg was an avid harmonica and accordian player. She loved dancing and swimming especially on those vacations in Hawaii with her friends. In fact, she continued to indulge in her love of swimming up to her final days. She had a zest for life – adventures, travels and new experiences, she was up for all of them. The times of mom’s life were interesting. She worked hard and always found the joy in life.

Ingeborg was predeceased by her parents and her husband, Anton Max. She is survived by four children, Dagmar Hughes (Wayne), Gabriela McLean (Tom), Anthony Krakau (Beverley), Paula Brock (Mike); five grandchildren, Ben (Heather), Garth, Lauren, Trent, and Bryan; and three great-grandchildren, Gavin, Iain, and Cannon.

Ingeborg wished to thank her doctors, Grace, McFadden, and Jansen, as well as the staff at Merecroft Pharmacy for the care and kindness shown to her.

Campbell River has done it again!

Thanks to the generosity of many people in our community, over 250 women in Campbell River who are homeless or at risk of homelessness will enjoy gifts of personal items this holiday season.

Beautifully-decorated Shoeboxes filled with little luxuries were recently delivered to Campbell River and North Island Transition Society, downtown winter weather shelter, Radiant Life Church, Salvation Army Evergreen House, Campbell River Women’s Resource Centre, AIDS Vancouver Island, Salvation Army Lighthouse Family Services, Homeless

Outreach Program, Opportunities Advocacy Services Centre, Immigrant Welcome Centre, as well as Campbell River Public Health and Laichwiltach Family Life Society.

The shelters, outreach agencies and women really appreciated receiving the gift filled Shoeboxes from the community.

“This box was amazing. I think everyone deserves to feel the spirit of Christmas and this is an incredible way to share it,” said one of the women who received a shoebox.

Coordinator Alison Skrepneck thanked everyone who filled Shoeboxes with personal items and little luxuries for the women, those who donated extra items, the dedicated volunteers who helped sort and decorate Shoeboxes and helped in other ways, and those who helped promote the project this year.

Several businesses helped collect items for the Shoeboxes this year: Vital Roots Wellness and Payless Shoes.

Three businesses served as drop-off locations for collecting the Shoeboxes once again: Coastal Community Credit Union in Discovery Harbour, Serendip-

ity in The Garden and Sundance Java Bar. Dan Samson provided a commercial space for storing and sorting the Shoeboxes, All in One Party Shop provided tables during the project, and Dr Lethangue donated dental supplies.

In order to meet the goal of 250 Shoeboxes this year, the campaign deadline was extended and the folks in Campbell River responded!

The Shoeboxes valuing more than $12,500 were distributed to women who accessed shelter or outreach services as well as other women in need in the community. This was the fourth year for the project in Campbell River.

For women who have been displaced from their homes and estranged from their families, the holidays can be a particularly challenging time. Often, women feel disconnected from society, invisible and alone.

Reducing the feelings of isolation and loneliness faced by women living in shelters or in poverty is one of the most important outcomes of The Shoebox Project.

A Shoebox gift is a powerful reminder for a woman that she has not been forgotten and that she remains a valued and respected member of her community.

For those giving gifts, The Shoebox Project is

an opportunity to give back to someone in your community. It’s a small gesture of kindness that has an immediate and positive impact on the woman who receives it.

The act of creating Shoeboxes tends to bring people together and works to give a human face to the broad issues of poverty and homelessness.

When a person makes the effort to assemble a gift for a woman living in a shelter, it brings to mind the challenges she may be facing and the many obstacles to overcome.

The Shoebox Project for Shelters, supported

by Dream, collects and distributes gifts in the form of shoeboxes to

women who are homeless or at high risk of homelessness. Each Shoebox is filled with items valued at 50 dollars that any woman is likely to enjoy, but may not splurge on for herself in difficult times.

Campbell River student receives Pacific Salmon Foundation bursary The Pacific Salmon Foundation announced the results of its annual Stewardship Bursary Program today and one of the winners is from Campbell River - Teagan Wardrop, who is currently attending Vancouver Island University.

“It’s important that young people get the support they need for a well-rounded educational experience, which is where our Stewardship Community Bursary program comes in,” said Dr. Brian Riddell, president and CEO of the Pacific Salmon Foundation.

The program provides

cash awards to postsecondary students currently enrolled in their second year or later of a salmon conservation or aquatic stewardship program of study.

Applicants must demonstrate volunteer experience in environmental stewardship.

This was a banner year for its bursary program, with the foundation awarding a total of $19,000 to 14 postsecondary students in B.C. The number of students and total amount awarded was the largest in the program’s history.

Since 2005, the bursary program has awarded

almost $88,000 to 67 students entering environmental fields.

“Volunteers are a critical component of salmon recovery in British Columbia,” added Riddell. “Often-times, student volunteers bring new science and conservation methods learned in the classroom to the programs they volunteer for outside the classroom.”

The bursaries are made possible through fundraising by the Pacific Salmon Foundation, including a major donation made in 2016 by TransCanada Corporation.

“We strive to support environmental initiatives that matter most to our local communities - so we are very pleased to support educational opportunities for students who display leadership in environmental stewardship in B.C.,” said Andrea Jalbert, vice president of environment, land and Indigenous relations at TransCanada. “Through the work of these dedicated students, TransCanada is proud to play a role in the protection of wild salmon habitat and is committed to collaborating with Pacific Salmon Foundation around the

sustainability of this important resource.”
