Affordable Recreation

The City of Campbell River and Strathcona Regional District work together with a number of agencies to provide affordable recreation opportunities.

Leisure Involvement For Everyone (LIFE) This program provides free admissions and discounted rates for recreation programs for individuals and families with low incomes. LIFE members apply once and receive two cards: The Strathcona Regional District – Strathcona Gardens Recreation Complex.

• 104 free Drop-In admissions • 50% discount on up to three programs.

The City of Campbell River Recreation and Culture – Community Centre, Sportsplex and Centennial Pool.

• 52 Free Drop-In admissions • 50% discount on up to three registered programs.

Quality Foods – Rec Bucks This program enables Quality Foods shoppers to redeem their Quality Foods points for Rec Bucks. Simply cash in 200,000 Quality Foods Points for a $20 Rec Bucks voucher, which is redeemable toward programs, admission and rentals at all local recreation centres.

JumpStart

Ages 4-18 years

Jumpstart is a community-based charitable program that helps kids in financial need take part in organized sport and recreation. To request funding, complete an application form, which is available at the Sportsplex or Community Centre. If you require further information regarding the program, call 250-286-1161.

Kidsport™ Ages 6-18 years So all kids can play!

Kidsport™ is a community-based sport charity that provides grants for children to participate in a recognized sport. Grants are limited to $200 per year, per child and certain restrictions apply.

Want to try something different for your child’s birthday this year? After everyone has gone home and Strathcona Gardens has closed its doors to the public, we invite children to join us for some overnight fun. Drop the kids off for some late night skating, swimming, lazer tag, sports, relay races and games - 13.5 hours of total fun! The weary party goers will wind down to a movie with popcorn and then sleep in one of our activity rooms waking up to a light breakfast all ready for you to pick them up. We will look after your party goers from 8:30 pm until 10:00 am the next morning and can take up to 24 kids. Two week's notice is required to book this event. cost:

option 2 - $250 Includes lazer tag for up to 2 hours on the leisure ice/floor with the option to switch it up and play ice/floor hockey or skate for a portion of the 2 hours. The package also includes the use of a party room (either the Pinecrest or Dogwood Room). Skate shop staff will be on site for the entire party.

All ages welcome. Pond Hockey is only available during designated times. If your skating time says “leisure ice” discount rates are in effect because only the leisure ice area is open.

All ages welcome unless otherwise specified! A soft puck will be used and a portion of the rink will be roped off for participants to play pond hockey. All participants must bring a helmet from home and wear it while playing. Don’t forget to bring your hockey stick! Leisure ice rates are in effect when pond hockey is scheduled on the leisure ice area.

Youth aged 8+, teens, adults and families are welcome to drop-in to this leisure ice program. Only room for 20 people per night so be sure to come early and sign in at the front desk. You will get to play at least 2 – 15 minute games per night. SPeCiAL RATe in effect - $5.00 per Child/Student and $7.50 per Adult/Senior.

Get a ride to the rink for either a complimentary drop-in skate or for a registered program in either the pool or arena. Participants must bring their own helmet and gloves if they are going to join the public skate or play pond hockey after getting picked up. Registration must be completed by 12:00 noon on the day of desired pick up. Public skate ends at 4:55 pm each day – so please make arrangements to have your child picked up by 5pm.

Please inform staff at registration if you need the skate staff to get your child to a specific program at the facility. Hurry - space is limited. See schedule on right for pick ups.

Join our coaches for a fun season of ice hockey training. This program is open to all athletes aged 15+ with developmental disabilities. It doesn’t matter if you have never played before or even if you aren’t a very good skater yet. We will help you work on your skating and hockey skills. We are planning on challenging at least one other diverse ability hockey team to a fun game throughout the season. Sign up this winter for some fun on the ice.

Registered ice Program descriptions Parent & Tot Skating Lessons: Enjoy playing a variety of games on the ice with your child while you both develop your skating skills. No previous skating experience is required for the child or their parent/guardian – the emphasis of this program is fun.

**Parent & Tot Hockey Lessons: Parents and tots will get a chance to develop both their skating and hockey skills during this program. Lots of fun for all. dash & Splash - Swimming & Skating Lesson Combo - 2 Lessons for 1 great Price:

This program combines both activities in one trip to the facility. The first ½ hour is spent on the leisure ice with a skating instructor, parents then have 15 minutes to help their child get changed and head to the pool for a swimming lesson for the last 1/2 hour. gReAT deAL And Time SAveR!!

ice quest - Learn To Skate Program: These lessons are designed with the beginner in mind! Our six-step program offers an introduction into the world of ice-skating. Please note: Preschool Ice Quest includes a snack and story time each class. ***Little Rascals Hockey: Learn basic hockey skills and play a real hockey game every class! Coaches will introduce your child to the game of hockey through a variety of fun drills.

All participants must be able to skate on their own. All Little Rascal participants and their families from the 2016-2017 season are invited to the Wrap Up Party on March 16th from 6:00-7:30 pm – please register your Little Rascal at the front desk.

Immersion learn to skate preschool program. Develop their language skills while having fun and learning how to skate.

**Coolest game on earth – intro to Hockey: If you have never played ice hockey this is the program for you. Learn basic hockey skills and have fun. All participants must be able to skate on their own.

**Hockey 101: Is your Minor Hockey player craving “extra ice time”? This popular fast paced after school program includes all aspects of hockey. Passing, shooting, skating, stick handling and organized drills similar to those in practice will help to elevate their game to the next level. This program sells out quickly so don’t miss out. Participants must have previous hockey experience for this program. **women’s intro to Hockey: The purpose of this program is to introduce women to the basic skills, to make new friends and to try the game without having to make a commitment to the entire season. Program will take place on the Leisure Ice. Private Lessons (all ages welcome): Want to learn how to skate or work on your hockey skills? Private lessons only cost $18.25 per ½ hour and semi-private lessons cost $13.75 per ½ hour per person. All ages welcome at our private lessons. Please call 287-9234 ext. 231 to book your time.

Ship's Ahoy (6-12) nautical Themed Aquatics Camp Does your child spend time on your friend’s or family’s boat? Want them to learn the boating basics and how to be safe in and around the water? This program offers participants an opportunity to learn about many aspects of safe boating including: basic navigation regulations and "rules of the road", responding to emergencies and general pleasure craft operation knowledge (i.e. safety equipment, buoys, beacons, weather, etc.). In the pool the kids will learn how to self rescue and rescue others, practice the HELP and HUDDLE positions and capsizing/righting a canoe. Synchro Swim (8-12)

The Junior Lifeguard Club offers a unique aquatic alternative for those kids who really love the water. JLC keeps kids interested and active in aquatics – especially quick learners and those caught between levels or programs. Friends can join together even if they are of different ages and abilities. Sign up today and develop your: swimming, lifesaving, fitness, lifesaving knowledge, community education, leadership and teamwork skills. JLC welcomes members that can swim at least 25 meters and tread water for 2 minutes.

Learn the basics of diving through progressive land, water and springboard skills. Move on at your own comfort level to practice more advanced skills such as front and back pike jumps and dives, hurdle jumps, tucks and advanced dives like flips and somersaults. Candidates must be comfortable in deep water. (level 4 swimming minimum).

Combine swimming, dance and gymnastics.

Learn basic moves and routines while having fun in the water. This Olympic sport develops strength, endurance, flexibility, artistry and timing as well as breath control and teamwork. Candidates must be comfortable in deep water and be able to swim at least 2 lengths of the pool.

focusing on Stroke development These training sessions still incorporate some of the components of the Red Cross Learn to Swim Program but there will be more focus put on stroke development, fitness and endurance. Two classes a month will work on the participant’s water safety skills but the remainder of the time will be spent on strokes and entries. Parents will receive a mid-season evaluation and report cards on the last day. Please register for one of the 3 groups below. Parents can register for either 2, 3 or 4 days a week – you get to pick the days!

Sea Turtle Stop Look Ask!, jumping into chest deep water, PFD and Me, assisted front and back floats and assisted front swims.

Sea Otter Using games and activities, swimmers learn to open their eyes under water, further develop basic floats and glides and swim 1m.

They also learn age-appropriate water safety skills.

Salamander Learn about active supervision, Stop Look Ask!, jump into chest deep water, buoyant objects, rhythmic breathing, front float and recovery, front glides with kick and a distance swim of 2m.

Swim Kids Lessons (Ages 5 – 12 years)

Sunfish Safe entries, surface support, floats and recovery in deep water, front and back and side glides with kick, roll over glides and a distance swim of 5m.

Crocodile Changing direction in deep water, jumping into deep water, surface support, calling for help, glides with kick, front and back swims for 5m and a distance swim of 10m.

Whale Learn when and where it is safe to swim, jump into deep water and tread water for 20 seconds, stop throw and call for help, front and back swims for 7m as well as a 15m continuous swim.

30 Min Classes for Levels 1- 6 & 45 Min Classes for Levels 7-10

L1 Swimmers receive an orientation to water and the pool area and work on floats, glides and kicking, and build their endurance by working on the 5m front swim.

L2 Work on propulsion skills to move through the water and to remain at the surface, the front swim (5m) and learn about deep-water activities and proper use of a Personal Flotation Device (PFD). Fitness activities include the 10m flutter kick and a 10m distance swim.

L3 This level provides an introduction to diving, and teaches swimmers how to make wise choices about where and when to swim. Endurance is achieved by building strength in the flutter kick and a 15m swim.

L4 Intro to the front crawl (10m) and back swim with shoulder roll (15m). Swimmers work on kneeling dives, surface support (45 seconds—deep water) and

developing a greater sense of self-safety by understanding their own limits. Endurance is built through a 25m swim.

L5 Intro to the back crawl (15m), sculling skills, whip kick on the back, stride dives and treading water. Front crawl increases to 15m. An introduction to safe boating skills is also included.

Endurance is developed through a 50m swim.

L6 This level refines front crawl with a focus on hand entry and breathing (25m), back crawl with a focus on arm positions and body roll (25m), and introduces elementary backstroke (15m), safety on ice, and rescue of others with throwing assists. Also includes front dive, treading water in deep water for 1½ minutes, dolphin kick and a 75m swim.

L7 This level builds skills and endurance for the front crawl (50m), back crawl (50m) and elementary back stroke (25m) and introduces whip kick on the front.

Swimmers learn about airway and breathing obstructions, reach assists and stride entry. Swimming endurance is increased to a 150m swim.

L8 Hypothermia, dangers of open water, rescue breathing, surface dives, stride entries, front and back crawl, elementary backstroke and breaststroke and a distance swim of 300m.

L9 Wise choices and peer influence, boating regulations, self ice rescue, surface dives, shallow dives, front and back crawl, elementary backstroke and breaststroke, as well as a 400m distance swim.

L10 Introduction to butterfly and scissor kick, fitness, sun safety, rescue of others from the ice, surface dives, as well as a 500m endurance swim.

first aid & aquatic leadership courses Bronze Star Bronze Star is the pre-Bronze Medallion training standard and is excellent preparation for success in Bronze Medallion. Candidates develop problem-solving and decision-making skills as individuals and in partners. They learn self-rescue techniques, in-water searches, CPR, water rescue skills and first aid including how to manage a land spinal injury. Candidates also develop stroke endurance and lifesaving fitness skills.

Bronze medallion Bronze Medallion teaches an understanding of the lifesaving principles embodied in the four components of water rescue education - judgment, knowledge, skill and fitness. Rescuers learn self-rescue techniques, defense and release methods, and tows and carries in preparation for challenging rescues involving conscious and unconscious victims of various types, including spinal injuries and circulatory emergencies. Includes CPR-C certification. national Lifeguard (nL) Recognized as the standard measurement of lifeguarding performance in Canada, the NL program develops a sound understanding of lifeguarding principles, good judgment and communication skills, and a mature and responsible attitude toward the role of the lifeguard. The NL lifeguard's primary role is to prevent injuries (and when necessary, effectively manage emergencies) and to facilitate a safe and enjoyable aquatic experience. NL training develops the basic lifeguarding skills needed to adapt to different aquatic facilities and situations. water Safety instructor (wSi) This course will provide you with instructional knowledge and theories on topics including teaching methods, learning styles, swimming skills, communication, safety supervision, injury prevention, and feedback. The course will include a WSI – Skills Evaluation, WSI – Online, WSI – Teaching Experience, and WSI – Classroom and Pool components.

Lifesaving instructor (LSi) Lifesaving Instructors are trained to teach and evaluate Canadian Swim Patrol, Bronze Star, Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross, and Distinction.

Candidates are introduced to basic learning approaches and teaching strategies and apply them to teaching water rescue, first aid, and other lifesaving skills.

BCRPA fitness Theory Course This is a core course for people wanting to become a personal trainer or strength training, aerobic or aquatic instructor. You will learn fitness principals and safety in exercise design, energy systems and exercise selection.

This course includes classroom and practical study. Be prepared to be in the pool for up to five hours over the weekend. emergency first Aid (efA) Using hands-on training and practice this basic first aid course will give you the confidence to respond effectively to an emergency. Lifeguard School

It’s happening here at Strathcona Gardens during Spring Break.

Lifeguard School is the most efficient and economical way to obtain the majority of the certificates required to become a lifeguard: Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross, Standard First Aid with CPR C and AED Provider. “Crash” courses can be a great way to learn – become 100% immersed in lifesaving, lifeguarding and first aid. Register for the Lifeguard School and save a significant amount in registration fees – 4 awards and 7 days of training for only $380.

Aquatic Therapy Programs Aquatic therapy is a form of physical exercise which can significantly improve structural and muscular strength. Many people have made vast improvements after motor vehicle and work related accidents, orthopedic surgeries and other debilitating conditions. The water decreases weight bearing and stress on joints and muscles. Strength will improve and range of motion naturally increases. We offer 24 different fitness classes for you to choose from, and each week, there are 47 different classes you can attend.

Our classes are adult-oriented, but youth aged 12-18, may participate in a fitness class when they provide a completed Parental Consent form. These forms, which may be signed by parents or guardians, are available at the Sportsplex and the Community Centre.

Racquetball and Squash, what is the difference?

Racquetball and squash are racquet sports played indoors in closed courts. Both sports require agility, speed, coordination, and quick movements; and can be played by singles or doubles. How they differ is their rules, court size, and equipment. Squash balls are smaller than racquetballs, and squash racquets are longer than racquetball racquets.

What is Wallyball?

This sport adds a whole new dimension to the game of Volleyball. Wallyball is basically volleyball played in a racquetball court, and the walls are used to bounce and strategically place the ball.

Court Rentals

Courts are available for 45-minute rentals.

It is mandatory for youth players, age 18 and under, to wear goggles when they play squash or racquetball.

We strongly advise all players to wear eye protection.

Fundraisers 50+ members fundraise at annual sales: Plant & Garden Expo Sale, GIANT Garage Sale, Christmas Marketplace and Toy & Craft Sale. Donate, join a group that knits, sews, crafts or quilts for the sales.
