SLOT MACHINES!

Wishing you a happy, stress free holiday Chances Chilliwack has expanded and it’s bet ter than ever!

Make a list, check it twice, then do it, delegate it or ditch it.

By: Tanja Shaw SPECIAL TO THE PROGRESS Christmas is less than three weeks away: are you excited? Or, are you a wee bit stressed?

• Fantastic selection of slot machines • Realistic graphics • Enticing sound effects

With the exception of those who still believe in Santa Claus, most people seem to err on the side of ‘feeling stressed’ around the holidays. Small talk about the weather (we like talking about the weather in Chilliwack) is replaced with “Are you ready for Christmas?” So what does ‘being ready’ really mean? Does it mean preparing brilliant Christmas entertaining platters, getting that perfect gift for the ‘hard to buy’ people on your list, celebrating the season with a new glittery outfit, baking all 12 family favourite Christmas cookies, preparing the perfect, plump turkey (on one or more occasion) and yes, sticking to your workout and diet regime?

I think this time of year is wonderful, but

if you fall into the holiday trap of trying to do everything for everyone, it can also be incredibly stressful. If you love doing all the Christmas-y activities, and feel like it’s very manageable, then go ahead and enjoy it. However, if you feel overwhelmed with all that needs to be done, know that you don’t have to do it all. Do this simple exercise to make your holiday to-do list more manageable and give yourself permission to relax a little. The exercise is called a brain dump. This version is geared toward the holidays, but you can do it anytime of the year. I do, and it’s wonderful! Here’s how it goes: • Write a list of all the tasks and activities you need to or want to do around the holidays. Separate the tasks into a ‘daily list’ (things you do daily such as preparing meals, work, spending time with family, commuting, workouts, etc.). Create a weekly list (things you do 1-2 times per week) and a ‘one-off’ list (things you will likely only need to do only a few times, such as holiday shopping, writing Christmas cards, preparing holiday meals, CONTINUED ON PG. 17

If self-care activities, such as your daily workouts, meal planning, time to read a book, etc. are not on your list, be sure to add them. Self-care is not negotiable! You cannot pour from an empty cup! • Allot an estimated amount of time to each activity. You may find that when you assign time limits to each activity, your “to-do list” seems more manageable. Either way, move on to step 3. • Now you’re ready for the fun part. Place a star beside all the tasks that are important to you, that you enjoy doing. Be honestdo you really have to do everything on your list? Do you really need to bake 12 different kinds of cookies? Will your family really suffer? If you really want to attend all the Christmas parties you’ve been invited to, then great! But if you really don’t want to go to a few, it’s not “star-worthy.” • Now ask, can you “simplify” any of the starred activities? If you need to spend an entire day preparing a holiday meal (and don’t truly enjoy it), are there ways to simplify the task? Can you ask other people to help? Block time in your calendar

• For everything that is not starred, you get to delegate or ditch the task. Again, be honest. If you don’t need to do something (for example, someone else is capable of doing the task), delegate it. No one to delegate it to? Then ditch it. This holiday season, I hope you can enjoy the time spent with loved ones rather than worrying about how you are going to tackle your ‘to-do’ list. Did you know that the poinsettia is now the world’s number one potted houseplant? It has certainly come a long way from those early days in the 1950s when it was a real challenge to keep the leaves on the plants for a few weeks, let alone until Christmas!

Today it is hard to keep up with the many new poinsettia varieties that are developed each year. The wonderful thing about all the newer varieties is their great resilience and longevity. They tend to hold their beautiful colour well into spring and can be brought back into bloom the following year. I’ve always kept in touch with some of the major poinsettia breeding companies - it’s fun to see what’s going to be appearing next. In a never-ending quest for the perfect

plant, poinsettias now come in an everincreasing range of styles and shades from red, pink and white to marbled bi-colours. A number of varieties have been developed that are significantly unique and well worth pointing out as substantial improvements over some of the older varieties. In spite of the plethora of new colours and bract forms, red is still the most popular colour. Again, this is partly because of tradition, but also because there are so many new red varieties with a wide range of shading from orange-reds to the almost black-reds. The foliage has changed too, becoming far darker to match some of the deep rich red bracts. Even though the red varieties are the main course, without the spice of novelties, poinsettias would soon slip down on the Christmas menu. Here are some of the exciting new varieties. ‘Ice Punch’ is a most unique red with a leaf patterned blaze of white on each bract. Many of the new whites now come in creams and shades of yellow as well CONTINUED ON PG. 19

bring the whole family! CONTINUED FROM PG. 18 as the pure white ‘Polar Bear’. ‘Autumn Leaves’ is a unique salmon colouration. ‘White Glitter’ has always been a nice red, speckled with flecks of white, but now there is an even more dramatic version of ‘White Glitter’ called ‘Jingle Bell Rock’ with its very distinctive pattern of white and red strips. The newest poinsettia varieties are the ‘Princettias’. Originally meant to be used outdoors in summer, they have found a lot of fans because of their unique shades of pink and white. They are quite beautiful. One of my favourite poinsettias is ‘Orange Spice’, an compact electric orange that just pops! Another variety that has really caught fire is the fully double red, white or pink ‘Winter Rose’ that looks quite stunning with its layered double blossoms. It stands up well in most household conditions. The keys to success with maintaining a poinsettia’s beautiful bright colours are room temperature and careful watering. Keep them near an east or north window with

lots of indirect light. Temperatures between 15-20° Celsius are best. Watering is critical because most poinsettias have weaker root systems that can rot very easily if overwatered. The trick is to water them well, then let them dry out. By picking up the plant and feeling its weight, you can easily tell if it’s dry or wet. Always use warm water to avoid shocking the plant. An old myth that still needs to be dispelled is the alleged poisonous label given poinsettias. Beyond any doubt, they are not poisonous to people or pets. The only concern is for indoor birds as with any plant that contains sticky sap, which can clog their gullets. Poinsettias are beautiful, long-lasting plants to be enjoyed all through the holiday season. Add a festive flair to your homes this Christmas by decorating with the many wonderful colours and styles of poinsettias, from tiny ‘Pixie’ table centres to hanging baskets and tree forms.

Christmas trees are symbols of the holiday season and the spirit of giving that the season champions. Choosing and decorating a Christmas tree is a tradition for many families, and depending on the trees they choose, families may have some work to do to keep their trees glowing all season long. Artificial Christmas trees require little, if any, maintenance. But live Christmas trees, which some people feel are more authentic and welcoming than their artificial counterparts, require daily maintenance. In addition to supplying the tree with water at least once per day, live Christmas tree owners can take these steps to prolong the life of their trees. • Protect the tree on the way home. Your tree might be vulnerable to damage as you transport it from the farm to your living room. Unwrapped trees placed atop vehicles can be dried out by the wind. Prevent wind damage by wrapping the tree if you plan to place it atop your vehicle. If possible, lay the tree in the bed of a pickup truck and close the cover over the bed.

If you don’t have access to a pickup truck but can use a minivan or SUV to transport your tree, see if the tree fits inside your vehicle. If it doesn’t, wrap it tightly in a blanket or another form of cover, making sure the cover won’t blow off in the wind when you hit the open road.

fire hazard. But doing so also can dry out the tree, decreasing the chances it will make it through the season. Placing the tree near drafty windows also can dry out the tree, so try to find a spot in your home with a consistent temperature.

• Have the tree cut before you take it off the lot. If you typically purchase your tree from a florist or tree lot instead of a tree farm, then remember to ask the seller to recut the stem of the tree before you take it home. Tree farm trees are freshly cut, but trees sold away from the farm might have been chopped down weeks before they are ultimately sold. During the interval between being cut down and sold, trees’ vascular systems can clog and prevent the tree from getting the water it needs to survive the season. A fresh cut of the stem unclogs the system and ensures the tree will be able to consume water.

• Water the tree often. Christmas trees need lots of water to make it through the season. You may notice the water in the tree stand disappears quickly when you first bring the tree home. That’s because freshly cut trees will consume more water than trees that were cut several weeks ago. As the season goes on and the tree’s vascular system begins to clog, you might not need to water the tree as much as you did when you first brought it home. But check the tree’s water stand twice per day when you first bring it home, refilling the stand with water whenever necessary.

• Avoid placing the tree near heaters or drafty windows. Many people know that placing a live tree near a potentially hot heating vent poses a

A few tricks of the trade can help holiday celebrants maintain lush, awe-inspiring Christmas trees throughout the holiday season.

‘Tis the Season to Sparkle 20%

Be a responsible party host Chilliwack hosts are being reminded not to let their guests drink and drive this holiday season. “Holiday parties can be some of the happiest times of the year. Make your party memorable for all the right reasons - fun, friends, ugly sweaters, and not for a preventable tragedy on the road,” says Coralee Oakes, minister responsible for the B.C. liquor stores.

They are reminding party planners that they are responsible for making sure their guests do not overconsume liquor or drive under the influence.

A few tips for helping everyone stay safe include: asking your guests to turn in their keys when they arrive; serving snacks and non-alcoholic beverages; enlisting help to keep things under control; providing a place for guests to stay overnight; and having a plan for those who are going home - designated drivers, access to taxis, and public transit information.

DECEMBER

In Chilliwack, Operation Red Nose is also available. The volunteer service has provided more than 200 safe rides home so far this year. They’ll be out again on Dec. 9,10, and 16, 17 and New Year’s Eve Dec 31. Operation Red Nose volunteers, who will drive partiers and their vehicle home, are just a phone call away: 604.393.3000. The service is by donation, with all the proceeds going to children’s programs through the Kiwanis Club of Sardis.
