You just need two strong arms and a willingness to shovel.

After all, not everyone is able to remove the snow thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s piled up over the last few days.

With about 48 cm in snowfall, and blowing snow and snowplows creating piles at least twice that height, the job is not just enormous for some. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s downright impossible.

Some driveways will be long and treacherous. Some sidewalks will be short and sweet. But as a snow angel, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be able to clear them all with ease and a smile on your face. You may already be an unofficial snow angel, clearing paths for friends and neighbours so they can come and go more easily.

The Seniorsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Resources Society matches up residents who either elderly or disabled with their snow angels, to help fill this need.

CHILLIWACK MUSEUM DECEMBER 20 IS A DAY TO GIVE The Chilliwack Museum will be staying open late and on Saturdays heading into Christmas so people can come and take part in some festive crafts and activities.

Their self-guided Christmas activities event will be available on Thursday nights from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Additionally, it will also take place during the first week of Christmas break (Dec. 19-23) during regular hours.

For this holiday fundraiser, if you give a little you get a little.

Sometimes it's nice to be rewarded and organizers of A Day to Give will be doing just that.

On Tuesday, Dec. 20, when you bring non-perishable food items to the event, you will receive one ticket per item to be entered to win one of many prizes.

A Day to Give is hosted by the I Heart Kids and Rainbows Foundation, which will be sponsoring two families this year for Christmas thanks to generous donations from dozens of local businesses.

Those businesses have also donated numerous prizes to be won.

Christmas activities are included with museum admission, which is $3 for adults, $2 for seniors and students and free for kids 12 and under.

Chilliwack River Valley Fire Department will be on hand serving complimentary Starbucks coffee. Bring your kids (and some items for the food bank), check out the fire truck, and enjoy a hot beverage along with other goodies.

RCMP officers from Chilliwack Traffic Services and Fraser Valley Traffic Services passed educational pamphlets addressing the perils of impaired driving to motorists during the operation conducted from 6 – 10 p.m. from three roving locations around the city.

Over 500 motor vehicles were checked by officers with police issuing five Immediate Roadside and three 24-hour Motor Vehicle Act (MVA) driving prohibitions to impaired drivers. An additional 28 violation tickets for other MVA related infractions were also served by police during the operation.

Operation Red Nose provides another safe option for getting home safely from a party.

The kids are students in Nicola Bramble's class and since September they've recently been doing random acts of kindness in the classroom, their school and the community. So far they have done things like making cards for school staff members, making art for fellow schoolmates, writing postcards to veterans, and playing secret Santa for kids who may be having a hard time in school. All of the students random acts of kindness are in the name of Bramble's friend, Cpl. Kevin Morris, who died of a brain tumour in September.

Blending mind, body and soul at Central Valley Tai Chi Jenna Hauck The Progress

It cannot help you in a fight, he says, until youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve built up the muscle memory.

Darrell Rigden stands with his feet shoulder-width apart. His breathing is relaxed. He raises his hands slowly up, then down. With fluid movements his arms open out to the sides, then he shifts his weight and steps back with his right foot.

His left arm gracefully crosses over his right.

Rigden has been practising tai chi for 16 years. Two years ago he was confronted by someone wanting to pick a fight with him, but because of his thousands of hours spent practising tai chi, he was able to prevent the encounter from escalating. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You can diffuse almost anything,â&#x20AC;? he says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve experienced the absolute quiet, mentally and emotionally.â&#x20AC;?

He continues like this as his arms, legs and whole body seamlessly and quietly shift from one tai chi movement to the next.

Tai chi integrates mind, body and spirit. It relaxes oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s breathing and muscles. It calms the mind.

Ridgen is the owner of Central Valley Tai Chi, a studio which opened in March where he practises and teaches traditional Yang-style tai chi. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s unlike any other martial art that I know of,â&#x20AC;? he says, adding that thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no belt system and no graduated advancement with tai chi.

You simply study the poses and practise them over and over again.

It starts with the beginner (short-form) tai chi which is comprised of 24 movements.

Once someone has completed that, they move on to learn the next set of movements, eventually mastering the 108 long-form, Yang-style tai chi.

But it takes time. A lot of time. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s almost useless for the first seven to 10 years,â&#x20AC;? says Rigden.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Tai chi releases endorphins and dopamine which helps us to relax,â&#x20AC;? says Rigden. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It cannot be done with any tension.â&#x20AC;?

With the slow moves and relaxed breathing, the chemicals in the body start to flow. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The mind and body calm itself completely and you can end up taking that with you.â&#x20AC;?

Rigden loves the spirit that comes from tai chi. â&#x20AC;&#x153;One of the things I really appreciate, especially in a large group, is the energy that builds. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s spectacular. You can feel it immediately.â&#x20AC;?

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also the best physiotherapy a person can do, he says. Rigden should know â&#x20AC;&#x201D; heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s had a number of ailments including five compression fractures in his spine, fibromyalgia, and

Central Valley Tai Chi offers beginner (short-form), long-form, and advanced

classes, as well as a meditation class and a weapons/new forms class. Just recently they started offering yoga classes as well, taught by Sue Kumar of Kriya Yoga.

Tai chi essentially makes oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s whole self healthier the longer and more frequently they practise it, adds Rigden.

• Purchase sturdy, well-made toys that come with contact information for the manufacturer or importer.

• Ensure batteries are properly installed by an adult and not accessible to children.

• Make sure that button batteries (often found in musical greeting cards, small electronic devices, children’s books and flashing jewellery) stay securely in the products. Look for products with battery compartments that prevent easy access.

• Supervise children at play and teach them to use their new toys safely.
