Weidner Motors has been a mainstay in the City of Lacombe for a long time. The family-owned Chevrolet dealership, which was originally founded 60 years ago by Lou and Anna Weidner, has always had a small town feel. Lou and Anna moved from Blackie in 1956 to purchase Mctaggart Motors. “Coming from Blackie, which was much smaller then the Town of Lacombe, Lou knew that customer service would be the cornerstone for his business to thrive,” recalled Dealer Principal Dave Weidner, who along with his brother Robert took over the business from Lou back in 1969. The Weidner Family have always taken a customer-first approach to how they do business and that service-first mentality has endured to this day. “We wouldn’t be here 60 years without our staff and our customers. We’ve had lots of long-term staff here,” said Weidner Motors General Manager Blayne Weidner. Blayne, who is the third generation of the Weidner family to be involved in the business, said the staff at the Lacombebased dealership is one of the best in the industry. “We have good people here, and they are constantly being recognized by General Motors for the great job they do.” Most of the staff at the dealership have been with the company for over 10 years, with some having been there 20, 30 or even 40 years. “All our people are well-trained. We believe training is integral to offering the best products, the best service and the best experience we can. Bert Rumsey our service manager has been involved with

the General Motors Technicians Guild for over 35 years and has over 42 years of GM experience.” “All our technicians achieved Grand Master level status last year which is a combination of training and testing results” In addition to the great team of mechanics, Weidner’s sales staff includes some of the best people in the business. For example, sales consultant Ken Lacey is a 35-year member of the Sales Master Guild.
“To be in the guild you have to be top of the field. It’s a combination of training, sales proficiency and customer satisfaction and Ken’s accomplished this year after year,” Blayne said. “If you’re buying a truck to pull a 30-foot trailer and you want to buy a half-ton, Ken would have a hard time letting you buy it because he wants you satisfied in the long run,” Dave added. Weidner Motors parts department is also an integral part of the business. Parts Manager Bernie Parent has been with Weidners
for over 40 years. His trained staff take pride in finding everything from tires and accessories to engines and transmissions. These small town values have been a big part of the Weidner Motors philosophy since it first opened in 1956. “The slogan over the years we’ve kind of developed is service: a longtime tradition. We’ve been here for a longtime. Service is important and tradition is important and we treat people fairly. It’s been passed on from my parents to Robert and I and then down to Blayne. We’ve got the same values,” Dave said, adding at Weidner Motors, they strive to live by that philosophy both inside the dealership and out in the community in Central Alberta. “I started here full-time in sales and when I walk up and down the streets of Lacombe and I want to be able to look people in the eye and that’s the way I want to run a business in Lacombe,” Blayne said. It’s that commitment to service and customer satisfaction that makes the short trip up to Lacombe a must for anyone in the market for a new or pre-owned car. “We get a lot of customers from all over Central Alberta who return for the service and knowing that they’re going to get looked after. How technology is helping bring peace of mind to parents T
he thought of having your teenager behind the wheel is understandably cause for more than a little anxiety. Fortunately, the latest technologies and apps can help reduce worry among the parents of new drivers. “As a parent myself, I sympathize with the feeling of apprehension as your kids begin driving,” explains Marc Saltzman, tech expert and columnist. “But while concerns over distractions from tech devices are legitimate, there are many ways technology is actually making driving safer.” While handing the keys over the kids may never become completely stressfree, technology is helping give teens the freedom they crave while allowing parents the peace of mind they deserve. Here are three tips for using tech wisely in the vehicle. 1. Go hands free: Apple CarPlay and Android Auto help young drivers stay hands-free by mimicking their cellphone’s screen on the car’s built-in display. With their device plugged in and
out of the way, teens are able to get directions, make calls, send and receive messages, and listen to music — all while staying focused on the road. 2. Get a report card: Car manufacturers are responding to parental anxiety directly. For example, the new Chevrolet Malibu comes with a built-in technology called Teen Driver. It supports safe driving habits by muting radio or paired device audio when front seat occupants aren’t wearing safety belts and gives sound and visual warnings when the vehicle exceeds preset speeds. Teen Driver also provides parents with an in-vehicle report card of the teen driver’s performance that parents can use as a teaching tool. 3. Apps are your best friend: Texi is an app that entertains friends who text your kid while they’re on the road, auto-responding with a funny meme that says they’ll respond soon. It’s been a part of our family for a very long time and it very meaningful to us. There is a lot of sentimental attachment - it’s almost hard to put into words. This company has been a guardian and a provider for us for many, many years,” Peter said. “I’ve always had an extreme passion for the car business and for cars themselves - I’ve got a bit of a collection myself, maybe bordering on a classic-car addiction. It helps to have some gasoline in your blood,” he said with a laugh. Peter recognizes the strength of Southside Dodge as the commitment from his family and staff, and he calls an extension of his own family, and of course, the customers of Southside. He says there is a great deal of pride in his employees and their dedication to service, as well as a great deal of pride in Central Alberta. “We look forward to continuing to serve Red Deer and Central Alberta as a family-run operation. I find that’s something that has sort of deteriorated in the last few years. There are a lot of family businesses being lost to corporations, but we want to continue to operate as a family-run, customer-driven operation,” he said.

We appreciate our long-term employees who come to work every day to serve and satisfy our customers.” The operation truly is a family-run business, from Peter and his sister, to Peter’s children, Matt and Amanda, who work alongside their father. Matt works with his father in the sales department, while Amanda helps out in various ways around the showroom, including decorating the showroom windows throughout the year with festive designs, and painting kids’ faces for customers with families. Peter said he’s very proud of the legacy his family has worked to build. “My father and mother talked it over and decided it was a good step to take for our family, and purchased the company - Millar Motors at that time - in the spring on 1971 when the previous owner was ready to retire. “I have three sisters and we’ve all been involved with the company since then in some way. Now, my sister and I are partners in the ownership,” Peter said. “We started out in a small facility that was probably close to 15,000 square feet in total. We had a small, two-car showroom and a small service department with seven bays. We had a service station where we sold gas. At that time, we had just under 30 employees and currently have about 125. “This truly is a heart and soul operation with our people being the life blood of it.”

s the seasons change, motorists must take steps to safeguard their vehicles, especially when the season changes from fall to winter. Each winter, many vehicles are subjected to sub-zero temperatures, snowfall and icy roads, and such conditions can take their toll on vehicles over time. Battery Old batteries should be replaced before winter begins. Without a strong, properly functioning battery, engines cannot turn over. Most batteries last between three and five years. However, extreme cold can compromise batteries, especially those that have been around awhile. Batteries are made up of acid and water, and cold temperatures can freeze the water, thereby affecting battery performance. According to AAA’s
Automotive Research Center, at 32 F, the average battery loses 35 percent of its strength. Newer batteries can be protected by starting the vehicle each day to warm up and recharge the battery. Let the car run for at least 10 minutes if you cannot take an extended drive. Exterior maintenance Keeping a car waxed and sealed can help maintain a durable exterior finish. This includes not only the paint, but
the rubber and vinyl parts of the car’s exterior. Winter is a good time to switch to a heavy-duty synthetic wax that can shield against water and road salts. High-quality sealants can be used on bumpers, trim and rubber door seals as added protection. uying a new car can be both exciting and confusing. The automotive industry, including manufacturers, dealerships and salespeople, have their own unique lingo, and buyers may not always understand some of the terms they hear as they shop for a new car. Anyone who has ever visited a new car dealership has probably glanced at a new car sticker and felt like something has been lost in translation. Such stickers hang prominently in the windows of all new cars on the lot, but reading them can be akin to reading a complicated legal document. Drivers about to begin their searches for new vehicles may benefit from learning the following terms they might see when reading window stickers at their local auto dealerships. · VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: This is typically at the top left or right of the sticker, and it includes information about the vehicle you are looking at. This includes the type of engine and transmission, the interior and exterior colors, the make and model of the vehicle, and its passenger capacity.

CHRYSLER launches a new minivan Over the past 30 years, Chrysler has held onto the top spot of the minivan segment by introducing close to a hundred innovations to its Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country models. To help maintain the popularity of its products, Chrysler has decided to replace the Town & Country in 2017 by a new model called the Pacifica. The new Pacifica has a modern, streamlined design, a new, stiffer platform, new powertrains, 20-inch wheels (optional) and a redesigned interior. handling and giving a quieter ride. The standard engine is a powerful 3.6-L Pentastar V6 producing 287 horsepower, which is pegged to a standard all-new, 9-speed automatic transmission. This combination can tow a respectable weight of 1633 kg (3600 lbs), quite a feat in itself for a minivan. To save on fuel, Chrysler is also offering a new plug-in hybrid combining the 3.6-L V6 Pentastar, an electric motor and a 16 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. In all-electric mode, the Pacifica Hybrid has a driving range of about 50 kilometres. Inside, the dashboard, consoles and seats have been redesigned. The more luxurious models can be equipped with three large touchscreens (one in front and two in the rear for passengers). The Stow’n Go folding seat system is still a feature, and a built-in Stow’n Vac vacuum cleaner (optional) cleans up any mess. A sportier 300S The big 300S sedan will be available in a Sport model for 2017. This model has a more muscular look thanks to modifications to the grille, headlights, wheels and exhaust.

NISSAN overhauls its lineup In just a few months, Nissan has redesigned virtually its entire lineup. In addition to launching the Titan pickup and the 2017 Armada full-size SUV, Nissan has unveiled an all-new Maxima and redesigned the silhouette of the Altima, Sentra and GT-R. Similarly, engineers have improved the driving range of the Leaf electric car. After the introduction of the Titan XD, with a Cummins 5.0-L V8 turbo-diesel engine that offers the features of a commercial van but at a lower cost, Nissan has launched a more conventional half-ton Titan. Shorter and assembled on a more flexible chassis than the Titan XD, this lightweight Titan is designed for both professional and personal use. The configuration includes 2 or 4-wheel drive and three bed lengths: 5.5 feet, 6.5 feet and 8 feet. The 5.6-L Endurance V8 gasoline engine produces 390 horsepower and 401 pound-feet of torque; it is equipped with a new 7-speed automatic transmission. A V6 gasoline engine will also be on offer at a later date. As for the new Armada, its completely redesigned body style was inspired by the legendary Nissan Patrol. Not suffering from any complex as far as competing with exotic brands like Ferrari and Lamborghini, Ford has resurrected the spectacular GT. This year marks the 50th anniversary of its triple victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1966. Lighter than ever thanks to its carbon fibre body, the new GT is powered by a 3.5-L twin-turbo V6 Ecoboost engine that produces more than 600 horsepower.

Still in the domain of extraordinary vehicles, Ford has reintroduced the F-150 Raptor truck after an absence of two years. This new version has shed 227 kg (500 lbs) thanks to an aluminum alloy body. The new generation of the 3.5-L twin-turbo V6 Ecoboost engine produces more power than the old 6.2-L V8. As for the transmission, the Raptor was treated to a new 10-speed automatic transmission. The LT315/70R17 BF Goodrich KO2 tires — measuring 34 inches high — were designed specifically for the Raptor. For its part, the Focus RS is the most powerful compact car on the market with its 2.3-L four-cylinder turbocharged Ecoboost engine producing 350 horsepower. A new 5.2-L V8 engine producing 526 horsepower powers the Mustang Shelby GT350. On the more pedestrian side of Ford’s lineup, the Fusion and Escape have been given some cosmetic changes, a redesigned interior and new technologies for 2017. Mechanics-wise, the 1.6-L four-cylinder Ecoboost engine has been replaced with a new 1.5-L Ecoboost, while the 2.0-L Ecoboost has been redesigned for improved performance.
