The festival is Lacombe’s annual tribute to Alberta Culture Days which encourages all Albertans to experience how culture contributes to a prosperous and vibrant society.

This year, for its 5th anniversary, the festival will have an extended program over 10 days starting September 22 and ending October 2nd, 2016.

Wagon Rides & Bicycle Tour For the past 5 years, since the very first Lacombe Culture & Harvest Festival, the favorite thing for everyone to do has been to go on the Horse Drawn Wagon Rides! It’s a very pleasant and leisurely way to experience Lacombe’s historic downtown. Hop on at the Lacombe Memorial Centre and get a ride you won’t forget! A costumed tour guide will also be on hand to provide historic information about Lacombe and tell some stories along the way.

Horse Drawn Wagon rides have become so popular they will run on Saturday Sept 24 and Sunday Sept 25 from 10am to 4pm.

And want to explore more of Lacombe?

Meet at the Lacombe Memorial Centre on Sunday Sept 25 at 3:30pm to go on a guided cycling tour or self-drive tour of Lacombe’s historic homes. For the cycling tour, bring your own bike and helmet and follow our tour guide as you take a leisurely bike ride and see some of the beautiful homes we have here in Lacombe. If you rather drive, pick up a self-guided tour book and visit Lacombe’s residential neighbourhoods on your own.

Organized by the Lacombe & District Historical Society, this tour is a great way to learn about the unique architecture and the personal stories

behind some of Lacombe’s historic residences.

The Lacombe & District Historical Society also produces a self-guided tour book and brochure of Lacombe’s historic downtown that you can pick up or purchase at the Flatiron Museum on Main Street in Lacombe.

Blindman Brewing Anniversary Celebration, Tours & Taproom Tastings Hello Lacombe, Welcome to Blindman Brewing, we thank you wholeheartedly for your continued support.

Join us in our taproom for tours, snacks and tastings of our beers as well we hope conversation and good times with your neighbours. We are kid-friendly and encourage visits from everyone. Children are a part of your lives (and ours as well) and we know how important it is to include them.

We are now nearly a year old and have had an eventful and wonderful year. Our brewery was built last summer by ourselves, family and friends and we’ve already expanded once and will shortly take over another bay as well. Our forest of stainless and fleet of oak will continue to grow. With your help we’ve won some awards and received some accolades and are very thankful.

Most importantly, we’re brewing more styles of beer and experimenting with countless others. When you walk in we’ll be able to pour you: • Blindman River Session Ale • Longshadows India Pale Ale • Kettle Sour #6 (Amarillo & Vic Secret) • Saison Lacombe: Autombe • Robust Porter • Cascadian Dark Ale • Cask-conditioned ale off our beer engine • Beer pushed with nitrogen off our nitro tap As well as other beer that will include things like: one-off experimentals, collaborations with other breweries, and barrel-aged beers from our barrel fleet. In The Garden Exhibit

See work created by artists in your own community! A special exhibit at the Lacombe Memorial Centre will feature artwork created by individuals that participated in the “Art in the Garden” program this summer at the Michener House Museum.

Art in the Garden was a new program offered by the Lacombe & District Historical Society in 2016 and was made possible

with funding from the City of Lacombe. Members of the public were invited to drop-in on Saturday mornings to make art in the garden at the Museum.

Using historic photographs and Lacombe’s historic downtown as inspiration, a variety of works were created using different styles and mediums. Materials and supplies were provided by the museum and

all participants needed to bring was their passion for making art.

The Museum hopes to offer this program again in 2017. If you participated in this program and want to share your ideas to improve or enhance our programs please contact the Michener House Museum at (403) 782-3933.

Weekend #1

Culture & Harvest Festival Kicks-off in Lacombe’s Historic Downtown!

During the first weekend of the Lacombe Culture & Harvest Festival, many festival events will be taking place in Lacombe’s historic downtown. The program highlights Lacombe’s rich culture and history and includes tons of free family friendly events such as Wagon Rides, Museum Tours, Doors Open, Children’s County Fair, and the Instrument Zoo. See locally made art at events such as the Charlie Donald Artwork Silent Auction, Lacombe in Pictures Exhibit, and Art in the Garden Exhibit taking place at the Lacombe Memorial Centre. Get hands on and participate in Paint Nite to make your own work of art. Make public art and paint a City dumpster!

Gather the family together Friday night for the annual Kraay Family Farm Outdoor Movie Night and cuddle up under a blanket and watch a movie under the stars.

Satisfy your taste buds and grab fresh produce and treats at one of the markets on Friday and Saturday. Taste new flavours at AB Beer week events at Cilantro and Chive and in the taproom at Blindman Brewing.

The first weekend of the festival culminates with a live outdoor music concert and community market at Cranna Lake on Saturday evening. A fireworks show will end this night with a bang!

But wait it’s not over yet, it’s just begun! Festival events continue on Sunday and through to the next weekend until October 2nd. Check out all that is happening on Weekend #2.

Weekend #2 Events at the Lacombe Agricultural Grounds For the second weekend of the Culture and Harvest Festival, October 1st & 2nd, our spotlight will be on the agricultural heritage of Lacombe.

Join us for festivities at the Lacombe Agricultural Grounds located next to the Lacombe Research Station.

The Agricultural Grounds will feature an outdoor market, old time cutting and stoking, blacksmithing and farrier demonstrations, live music, a petting zoo and much more throughout the weekend! Start your day with delicious pancakes served up by the Vintage Machinery Club and spend the weekend discovering the Agricultural Grounds.

A special exhibit of historic photos of The Lacombe Research Station has been organized by the Lacombe

& District Historical Society at the Pavilion. The exhibit explores how the Lacombe Research and Development Centre has been an important part of Lacombe for over 100 years.

The Station’s influence on the Lacombe community has been felt in a variety of areas including economic benefits, social activities, and agricultural research and education. Showcasing the Lacombe and District Historical Society’s rich photo collection, this exhibit will explore the history and the contributions of this federally owned research facility to the local community and beyond.

The Lacombe and District Historical Society will also be offering fun-filled activities on October 1st and 2nd at

the Ag Grounds. From 10am-4pm each day there will be heritage wool spinning demos showing the stages of fibre preparation with special guest spinners and a kid friendly craft to demonstrate the process of loom weaving. Master Spinner Donna Rudd, a member of the Twisted Sister Guild will be helping us demonstrate the various stages of fiber production. Come on out and learn about these heritage trades and the amount of work it takes to make beautiful handmade wool products.

Lacombe Performing Arts Centre Foundation

Music Concerts Once again the Lacombe Performing Arts Centre Foundation is pleased to be a part of the 2016 Lacombe Culture and Harvest Festival. For over three years now the foundation has been programming musical entertainment in Lacombe with ongoing events such as Music in the Park, Canada Day, and the Culture and Harvest Festival.

Through the development of these events, its goal is to showcase the performing arts and bring top quality entertainment into the community for the enjoyment of local and regional residents as well as visitors to our area.

This year the Foundation is excited to be able to present two great performances, one for each weekend of the Culture and Harvest Festival.

Week one, Saturday September 24th, our stage at Cranna Lake will feature a popular Central Alberta band, Tap 9. On Week two, Saturday October 1st, a special performance will take place by Alecia Aichelle at the Lacombe Agricultural Grounds.

Tap 9 will take the stage at Cranna Lake at 7pm. with fireworks to follow at dusk.

The Lacombe Community market will also be on site from 4pm until dusk and they will include food trucks so no need to cook dinner, you can make an evening of it.

Tap 9 Based in Lacombe, Tap9 was formed by world class studio and touring musicians to write original music influenced by their backgrounds ranging from blues, to country, to jazz and rock. With influences like Brian Adams, Tom Petty, Van Morrison and Weazer, Tap9 has created a fresh sound with a classic Country Rock finish.

With two studio albums, an original Christmas song, a new video of “Sorry for the Party” and regular live shows, Tap9 is always creating new and exciting original music.

In 2010 the band came together to explore their own original style writing and performing songs of

emotional and social conscience.

The combination of years of playing in studio and live gigs, brings a soul filled sound of truth to their songs.

Recording their first album, selftitled Tap9, The band has gone on to record and release an original Christmas song as well as songs that explore a lighter side to life such as ‘Sorry for the Party’, and ‘Cowboy in Paradise’. In 2014 the Band created and released a picture video of ‘For You I Bleed’, a song designed to increase the awareness of the problem of abuse in our society. The song continues to be shared and viewed by thousands.

In 2016 the Band released its first

studio recording of ‘Sorry for the Party’.

Always creating, Tap 9 looks forward to recording and performing original new music.

They have been on our big stage before, performing for Canada Day and at Music in the Park. These performers really know how to get a crowd going; high energy and excitement is a hallmark of their performances. Whether it’s one of their original songs or a cover of a country or country rock classic, one never knows what to expect with these guys. So get ready to tap those toes, do a little finger snappin’ and have a whole lotta fun!

Alecia Aichelle On Weekend #2 of the festival, Saturday October 1st, the Lacombe Performing Arts Centre Foundation is pleased to present Alecia Aichelle as part of Saturday’s entertainment at the Lacombe Agricultural Grounds

Rising Canadian country artist, Alecia Aichelle, captivates her audiences with her angelic vocals, alluring piano accompaniment, and relatable lyrics.

Born and raised in Kelowna, BC, Alecia’s love for music and performance began early on as she grew up singing in her church and excelled in Royal Conservatory classical piano. She also enjoyed acting and spent a great deal of time performing in school musicals and community performances. Alecia was introduced to country music at a young age by her parents, who have been devoted supporters of Alecia’s musical goals and dreams. Some of her first musical influences include Martina McBride, Faith Hill, Shania, Dolly, Paul Brandt, and CCR, to name a few. Reflecting on her country

music roots Alecia says, “Country was definitely not considered “cool” where I grew up, but it was my passion, a part of me, and I really didn’t care that the other kids teased me about it. It has always been who I am and I have always stuck to my guns.

Alecia now calls Red Deer, Alberta home since moving to attend the Red Deer College Music Program where she achieved a Music Diploma in Voice and Piano Performance.

Alecia currently performs throughout Alberta both with her band and as a solo act, as well as spends some time in Nashville song writing, recording, and performing.

One of Alecia’s dreams came true when she was invited to perform a “Writer’s In the Round” show with three other songwriters at the legendary Bluebird Café Nashville

in November 2014. Alecia has since returned to Nashville to record her first full length album, ‘Golden’ released spring of 2016!

Alecia’s passion for song writing and performing is evident, as is her passion for helping others. A longtime supporter of World Vision, Alecia also takes every opportunity to perform benefit concerts for her local SPCA, extended care facilities, and various fundraising events. Alecia feels her purpose is to use her gift of music to make a positive difference in the world and help make everybody smile.

Alecia and her band will be performing in the Agricultural Pavilion at the Agricultural Grounds on Sat. October 1st from 3-4:30pm. Admission is free. Don’t miss this opportunity to see this up and coming country star.

Celebrate Alberta Beer Week At Cilantro & Chive

Alberta Beer Week runs during the Lacombe Culture & Harvest Festival: Monday, September 26th through Saturday, October 1st.

Check out the special beer week events taking place at Cilantro & Chive in Lacombe.

Thursday, September 22nd

We kick it off with a Wild Rose Brewery Tap Take Over. This means we will have 4 Wild Rose Brewery beers on tap at once. Wild Rose Brewery is the first brewery who showed us support in Ponoka when we were just the new kids on the block.

Monday, September 26th

We kick off Alberta Beer Week with a tap of Blindman & Troubled Monk Collaboration brew along with our remaining tap (3) being taken over

by Common Crown (tentatively).

Tyler Rose, the head brewmaster at Common Crown is a Lacombe boy who has gone on to take over the newly built Common Crown. They hope to have their inaugural flowing LACOMBE EXPRESS

by the middle of September. If for any reason they see any hiccups we may have to juggle their brews. Along with a Cask Night from Blindman & Troubled Monk to kick off Alberta Beer Week at 4pm!

Tuesday, September 27th

We’ll have the Collaboration brew and Common Crown on tap, plus a cask from Situation Brewery out of Edmonton being tapped at 4pm.

Wednesday, September 28th

We’ll have a 3 tap take over from Dandy Brewing out of Calgary. These guys are beyond awesome. They brew small batches at a time and produce some phenomenal brews. Along with a cask from Alley Kat Brewing out of Edmonton. They’ve given us the details on their cask and I’m stoked!

This is going to be awesome!

Thursday, September 29th

We’ll have the Dandy taps along with the Blindman & Troubled Monk Collaboration plus a cask from the Olds College Brewing students. A tip of that hat to the start of many brewmasters careers.

Friday, September 30th

We blow the doors off this joint!

We have our four taps being taken over by Blindman, Troubled Monk, Bench Creek (Edson) & Dandy! Plus!

Yes there’s more! A cask from each of those breweries being tapped at 4pm!

Saturday, October 1st

This is where we salute Blindman and their first year in business! We’ll have the Collaboration brew back on tap, a Birthday Brew and two other unique beers from Blindman!

When the dust settles, we’ll have tapped 18 kegs, 9 casks, from 9 breweries in 9 days! A portion of the sales this week will go to the Lacombe Food Bank, plus... Blindman and Cilantro and Chive will be kicking all of the sales of the Birthday Brew to the Food Bank as well!

Lacombe Round Dance Club

Choreographed Ballroom Dancing (Round Dancing) is a unique form of social dancing where dances are choreographed to a specific piece of music. The dance figures conform predominantly to international ballroom standards and consist of all the standard dance rhythms … Waltz, Rumba, Cha Cha, Foxtrot, Tango, Two-step, Jive, etc. Choreographed Ballroom Dancing has evolved over the past fifty years and has an everexpanding inventory of over ten thousand choreographed dances.

A piece of music is selected, and the different steps or figures are chosen to fit the music. The step-bystep instructions on how to dance this choreography is written out in a “cue sheet.” The cueing lets us dance lots of different dances without having to memorize the choreography.

Dancers learn the dance steps as well as the figure names so that when the music is played the couple can follow the steps, prompted by the Cuer just in time for the next step to be danced. It is this aspect that makes Round Dancing especially unique. It is also challenging for the mind as well as the body.

Compare this with free-style ballroom. In ballroom dancing, the man has to think of what figures he wants to do to the music and then lead his partner to do

those figures. This can be difficult for the man to do at least three things at the same time: think up the choreography, make his feet do what he has thought up, and lead the lady to do it with him. So, for the man, the cuer is a saviour. Someone else has thought up what steps should be done to this particular piece of music. So instead of only 6 or 8 different steps that one normally thinks of a round dance might easily have 30 or 40 different figures.

This is not to say that Round Dancing is better than conventional ballroom. Rather, the two complement each other. Round Dancing helps you strengthen your basic repertoire of ballroom figures. It is found that each type of dancing reinforces the other and leads to greater enjoyment of dancing in general. And finally, it’s fun too!

Come and dance with us during the Culture & Harvest Festival! The Lacombe Round Dance Club will be hosting an introduction to cued choreographed ballroom dancing, bring a partner and try it out while learning a few Jive dance steps. Learn about the local club and upcoming lessons, and see a demonstration. Join us Sunday September 25 from 1:45pm to 2:45pm at the Lacombe Memorial Centre.

Jubilee Instrument Zoo This is the second year that the Jube Instrument Zoo will take place during the Lacombe Culture and Harvest Festival. The Jubilee Auditorium is pleased to offer this program with the participation of various partnerships throughout the province. This year we are proud to work with Music Centre Canada out of Red Deer and the Lacombe Lions Community Band to bring an assortment of instruments for music enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels to try. Come join us on Saturday September 24 at the LMC from 11am to 4pm.

Dancer’s Edge Studio Workshop & Demonstration

Dancer’s Edge Studio has been running for 14 years and in Lacombe for 6 years now. It offers a wide variety of dances to all ages. They have a Pre-School, Recreational and Competitive program to choose from.

Their state of the art facility just got an expansion in Lacombe this summer allowing for 4 dance studios.

Blacksmith Alley Have you been to The Lacombe Blacksmith Shop Museum?

During the festival, this unique historic building will be open to the public on Saturday Sept 24 from 10am to 4pm. Local blacksmiths will be demonstrating styles and techniques from the 1800s to modern day with special guest blacksmiths showcasing their various skills throughout the day in our very own ‘Blacksmith Alley’ next to the Museum.

Did you know that the Lacombe Blacksmith Shop is the oldest operating blacksmith shop in Alberta? It was built in 1902 when Lacombe’s population was just over 100 people!

Why are they called Blacksmiths? Because they smith with black iron.

Movie Night at Kraay Family Farm

Kraay Family Farm is a family-run attraction located just west of Lacombe on Range Road 1. They started their farm and corn maze in 1999, from then on their farm has grown. In 2012 the farm won a Guinness World Record for the Largest Corn Maze at 29 Thousand m². They now have 24 activities to do and see at their farm including; jumping pillows, a grain train, pig races, miniature golf, Stalk car Raceway, pumpkin cannon, gemstone mining, giant games and of course the corn maze with 3 phases!

This year they are hosting an Outdoor movie night on Friday September 23, 2016, featuring “The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown” as part of the evening’s lineup. Come out and sit by a fire pit (fire wood $5.00), take in all that the farm has to offer and watch a great movie. Bring a blanket to snuggle with and stay cozy! Regular admission rates apply.

Lacombe in Pictures Exhibit This year we’ve decided to have a photo exhibit of life in Lacombe and Lacombe County rather than a competition.

It’s an opportunity for individuals to display pictures they have taken in the Lacombe region, recent or old, that display the beauty, vibrancy, life and activities in our community.

We hope this event will provide an opportunity for new photographers to learn from others and to showcase their photos to friends and neighbours and even sell their work!

Central Alberta Woodworker & Wood Turners Guild Exhibit The Central Alberta Woodworkers & Wood Turners Guild has been a part of the Culture & Harvest Festival for the past 5 years, since the beginning of the festival.

Each year, members of the guild exhibit a variety of handmade items that showcase their amazing skills. Musical instruments, furniture, decorative items and children’s toys are some of the items they have showcased before.

See what the local craftsmen and artisans latest woodworking projects are during their exhibit on Saturday September 24 from 10am-4pm and Sunday September 25 from 1pm to 4pm at the Lacombe Memorial Centre.

Come and explore your inner artist while raising money for the Lacombe Performing Arts Centre Foundation.

Château Wine & Spirits is hosting Paint Nite on Friday September 23rd 7pm10pm, where local talent Kristi Thebeau will assist and inspire you while you create.

Treasures from the North Exhibit and Harvest Church Service at St. Cyprian’s Each year members from the Congregation at St Cyprian’s organize a special display inside the historic Church Building for the Lacombe Culture & Harvest Festival. In previous years, they have delighted visitors with displays of quilts and wedding dresses. This year, articles and artifacts brought from parishioners of Canada’s north will be put on display. There will also be a food drive to fill the shelves of the food bank of the Anglican Cathedral in the Arctic.

The Exhibit will be open on Saturday September 24 from 1pm to 4pm. On Sunday September 25, the Church will host a special harvest church service and social from 10am to 2pm.
