Chamber builds networks amongst businesses

BY RYAN WELLICOME LACOMBE EXPRESS Some would say when it comes to many things in life, “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.” As connector for the Lacombe business community, The Lacombe and District Chamber of Commerce’s mission is to facilitate the ‘who’ and create strong networks throughout the business community.

“I like to see myself as a connector,” said Chamber Executive Director Monica Bartman.

“Lacombe is a network of businesses and here in Lacombe there are 260 of them so I really want to encourage our members to utilize that network.

“That’s part of the value of the Chamber. As a connector, I try to remind people that these services are available and to make use of them.”

The Lacombe and District Chamber of Commerce – originally the Lacombe Board of Trade – was born in 1904. It operated as such until 1921. In 1924, it was born again with renewed purpose and operated for 25 years until becoming the Lacombe and District Board of Trade and Agriculture in 1949.

In 1975 it underwent yet another transformation and became the non-profit organization as it is known today. In the present, the Chamber now boasts the mem-

bership of 260 businesses within its network of interconnected professionals.

Membership with the Chamber can not only open numerous local doors but also many provincially and nationally.

“When you become a member of the local chamber, you also become a member of your provincial and national chamber as well,” said Bartman.

Chamber membership can benefit businesses in a number of ways, from the aforementioned connectivity between business members and professionals to health and wellness. The Chamber offers a health benefits plan called Chamber Plan Insurance that gives business owners access to affordable health insurance.

“It is a national program that’s been designed exclusively for Chamber members that allows a sole proprietor or a small business the same great group rates for health benefits and health insurance that a 500-employee company would have,” said Bartman.

“The majority of our businesses in Lacombe would fall under this category. This is something that is of value for a large number of our members.”

Over 25,000 businesses reap the benefits of the nation-wide coverage plans.

to members through discount programs.

“One benefit that we are working on is trying to offer a member to member discount program.

It would be offered by Chamber members exclusively to other Chamber members,” said Bartman.

“Great opportunities to help our members build those networks.”

Discounted membership rates are also offered to non-profit organizations, providing member organizations access to the same benefits that a business member would see.

“That allows (non-profit organizations) to be a part of that

network. I know some of our non-profit members access that Chamber Plan insurance because for them it has the potential to be the most cost effective option,” said Bartman.

For those that cannot join as a business, the Chamber also offers individual memberships that offer community members the chance to interact with the business community in the same capacity.

“If someone did own a business and they are retired but they are still interested in being involved, or maybe a university student in a business program that wants to get their foot in the door; they have

that opportunity to be involved as well,” said Bartman.

Advertising discounts can be made use of through the Chamber’s newsletters and scrolling LED board on Hwy 12.

Earlier this year, the Chamber held its 35th annual trade show - the Chamber’s ultimate networking event.

“We were very pleased with our trade show this year. When the economy is struggling, sometimes you don’t know how certain events are going to play out until they happen but we were really pleased that our trade show sold out again,” explained Bartman.

“It was packed full of amazing vendors and lots of variety.

“When consumers aren’t spending as much money, it is good for businesses to put more time and money out to do those kind of events to possibly obtain new clients,” she said.

Other events throughout the year, such as corporate challenges, Business After 5 events and luncheons help to provide the most opportunities for community business members to create relationships.

“Part of it is finding out what the members want and need,” said Bartman.

“We have the opportunity to celebrate local businesses that are really leading the way in excellence, and we also have the chance to recognize some individuals with some of the awards that we give out as well as the non-profit and farm family awards,” said Monica Bartman, executive director of the Lacombe and District Chamber of Commerce. “It gives a nice and full picture of things that are happening in the community. Our vision is that this is a ‘can’t miss’ for local businesses.”

Bartman said the annual event is an important one, especially this year.

“It’s challenging sometimes to really take the time and see the positive things that are going on,

especially in the last couple of years where the economy is a little bit more depressed than it has been previously and there are a lot of stresses on businesses, individuals and families,” she said. “It gives us

a chance to step back and to just celebrate our community together with the business community and also the residents.

“There is a certain level of inspiration that comes from hearing about what

other people are doing in the community. You might learn about a business you didn’t know much about before, but they may be a new partner for you in what you are trying to achieve or it may be a busi-

ness that you are going to be a new customer of and you weren’t aware of what they offered before.”

Nowco Home Hardware puts emphasis on the community

BY RYAN WELLICOME LACOMBE EXPRESS Nowco Home Hardware owner Tyler Nowochin strongly believes that a business has an obligation to be involved and maintain relationships throughout its community.

“A community can’t grow without business investment,” said Nowochin. “Poor choices can be made if educated business people in the community don’t get involved.

“It takes a certain mentality to succeed in business so to take people who have that mentality – who are having the success – and get them involved in the community. That’s why it is important.

It’s a moral responsibility to get involved. It is a standard and not really a choice. Moving forward while considering the people that it affects is important.”

Nowochin is part of a family legacy that has endured since 1986.

Nowco Home Hardware, located on Lacombe’s main drag – 50th Ave., was bought by Nowochin’s grandparents who then passed it down to Nowochin’s parents and Nowochin himself became owner in 2010.

“I was born into the business,” said Nowochin. “I was raised in the building and I couldn’t imagine not doing what I do. When I was seven or eight years old I was cutting up and taking out the boxes.”

To Nowochin, his staff are an integral piece of the pie and are part of why he believes his business has received an award nomination for the 2016 Lacombe and District Chamber of Commerce Business Awards.

“We’ve got amazing service. We get complimented all the time on the type of people that we have working here,” said Nowochin.

“It feels reassuring to receive a nomination. It’s nice to be appreciated. We try to do what we can and sometimes it gets noticed – sometimes it doesn’t.”

He feels service is especially imperative in a time of economic uncertainty and strife.

“Through a recession, if you are able to keep your standard of service as high as any other time, I think that matters,” he said.

According to Nowochin, much of Nowco Home Hardware’s staff is long-term and that has an effect on customer service.

“We’ve never done layoffs.

We have lots of long-term staff.

I’d say the average is probably between seven to 10 (years of employment) here,” he said. “That directly relates to service ability because people come in with the confidence that they are going to get the right help.”

In accordance with his business philosophy, Nowochin keeps his business involved with community initiatives, mostly in the form

of material donations.

“We support almost every single request that we get into the store.

Generally, the only ones that I will say no to are anything that is out of the community,” he explained.

His business often donates themed items for silent auctions

and raffles – especially around the holiday season with charities and initiatives such as the Lacombe Food Bank and Santa’s Anonymous.

Nowochin also does his own personal part in regards to involvement within the community.

“I try to stay very involved with City committees and organizations to make sure a voice is heard from the downtown business community because I believe there should to be a strong voice when making decisions.”

Blindman Brewing already set to expand Successful business marked a year of operations Oct. 1st

BY MARK WEBER LACOMBE EXPRESS Staff of the Lacombe-based Blindman Brewing is enjoying the brisk growth of the business, with expansion plans already in place.

This on the heels of just celebrating their first year on Oct. 1st which came at the end of Alberta Beer Week 2016.

Blindman Brewing is in the running for Small Business of the Year.

“From noon to midnight it was just packed in here,” recalls co-owner Hans Doef of the anniversary day, which allowed staff to show their appreciation for the support they’ve received.

From the start, the business was born out of a desire to not only specialize but also to offer top quality product in what is proving to be a flourishing industry.

“It kind of started with myself and Dave Vander Plaat,” recalls Doef. “This was probably about nearly four years ago. We were just talking about different vocational things. Dave was working on his MBA at the time at U of A, so he was looking into other business ventures, too.

“I think that everyone knew the trend was coming,” he adds of that space of time before Blindman Brewing was established. “We were a little ahead of the bubble, because we started a bit sooner.”

Mark Weber/Lacombe Express a fellow by the name of Kirk Zembal who, along with his brother-in-law and a friend of their’s, were looking to join a new start-up.

And then another gentleman by the name of Shane Groendahl joined in the venture as well.

“So four guys from Edmonton joined us,

and we have a group of six guys who all contribute to the running of the business in all of its aspects,” he said, adding the rounding out the mix is Matt Willerton.

“Also, our head brewer is Adam Campbell.

“With these guys joining us, I’ve learned a tonne about beer,” he explained of the collaboration. “We all make decisions

together and we all come to consensus (about the business).

“Once you try craft beer, you realize there is so much more to beer. The flavour - there is so much opportunity. There are so many different styles of beer that you can make.”

Doef added that another aspect of the business the men enjoy is the bringing together of people and of community in general. There is a warmly decorated, rustic area where folks can drop by and relax as well. Plus they’ve hosted a number of events across the region.

“It’s something we’ve created from nothing,” said Doef of the satisfaction of launching a business, not to mention seeing it do so well. As mentioned, the community has been extremely supportive also.

And that has translated into further growth.

“We’ve taken the bay beside us which is another 2,000 square feet,” he said, adding that customers are coming to the business from as far away as Edmonton and Calgary as well.

“It’s like any business owner that starts up something - you are always thinking about it and thinking about the next steps and what you can do better,” he said. “And because it’s craft beer in this industry with the potential surrounding that, you just want to be pushing ahead and making the best beer possible.” editor@reddeerexpress.com

Kraay Family Farm sets the standard for family fun

FUN FOR ALL - The Kraay Family Farm has much to offer for anyone of any age.

BY RYAN WELLICOME LACOMBE EXPRESS Kraay Family Farm has been setting the standard in family-friendly fun for 17 seasons in the middle of Alberta farmland, seven minutes west of Lacombe.

The farm features activities that suit a wide variety of activities for every age

from one to 100.

“We are a family that wants to create a place for families to come and play together,” said Rachel Kraay, co-owner of the Kraay Family Farm.

“I love that adults act like kids in that sense – they remember how to play again, and kids remember that they don’t have to be adults yet so they can play. We have a

lot of fun doing it and the fact that we can work together as a family – our kids are here with us when we work – is awesome.”

The farm’s flagship, the corn maze, spans 15 acres and is the farm’s original attraction. This year the maze has been cultivated into an ode to the 50th anniversary of one of television’s fall traditions and most recognizable cartoon specials, Peanuts’ The Great Pumpkin.

“It’s a good corn growing year, this year.

We are getting around 11 feet height with most of the corn. It makes for some very high narrow pathways sometimes,” said Kraay.

“There are three different mazes within the maze. The first phase is the longest and hardest so if people have never done a maze before and they fear they may be claustrophobic then we suggest they start with the easiest one and see how it goes.

Then each phase has a bridge that allows you to look over the corn so you can make sure that you sort of know where to go.”

Kraay said that allotting at least one and a half hours to complete the maze is prudent.

“That is if you don’t make a ton of wrong turns and you keep a fairly steady pace. It can take longer – maybe two hours – but people have finished in half an hour, but they must walk really fast,”

said Kraay.

The farm has had other additions to the wealth of attractions it boasts. A large bouncy platform called the Pumpkin Pad is among the additions, as well as a wooden obstacle course called the Timberline Adventure, colloquially known among farm goers as ‘the Ninja Warrior Course.’

The farm has also recently doubled the size of its country store.

Kraay said that the family tries to keep the grounds looking as groomed as possible.

“We take a lot of pride in how (the farm) looks. We think about what we would want if we were guests here. Part of that is keeping it clean and painted and garbage picked up. We do the best we can that way,” said Kraay.

Each year, the farm is open for business following the long weekend in May until the end of April and then from the end of July until the end of October – ending in 2016 on Oct. 22nd. The corn maze is not open during the spring months in order for it to fully mature for the fall.

“This place has so much fun to be had,” said Kraay. “If you’ve never been here before, I think people will be surprised how much there is to do and how much fun it is to play.” news@lacombeexpress.com

Fit Body Boot Camp makes Lacombians feel the burn

BY RYAN WELLICOME LACOMBE EXPRESS For four years, Lacombe Fit Body Boot Camp has been helping Lacombe residents keep fit and stay healthy, all without breaking a sweat.

The high-intensity group training facility is part of a worldwide brand with hundreds of locations in Canada, the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom.

Lacombe’s branch was opened four years ago by Denise Harty and has seen much success over the years.

“It’s been a steady growth and it’s been pretty awesome. We’ve seen some amazing transformations in the last four years.

We started off with two people outside my doors in the morning and now we are at over 400 members,” said Harty.

“I started out just by myself and now we currently have a staff of seven.”

Harty expressed that she is thrilled to be nominated by the Lacombe and District Chamber of Commerce for the 2016 Business Awards and Gala.

“It’s pretty exciting. It just shows the support that we have within our own membership,” she said.

She explained the business and its membership have grown

together and that creates a strong connection between the two.

“They have seen us grow and we have seen them grow and get results so they appreciate what we do for them and it’s nice to see that they appreciate us and how we have grown with them.

“PASSION AND COMMITMENT AND SUCCEEDING THE CLIENT’S EXPECTATIONS ARE VERY IMPORTANT.” DENISE HARTY “It’s not just about weight loss – it’s not just about losing pounds on the scale. It is about empowering.”

Harty said that one of her business’s most important goals is providing a comfortable space for people to enjoy being active.

“It’s a safe place. There is no judgment here when people come in. You take care of everybody whether someone has a past injury and wants to feel comfortable working out again or being able to get into a bikini they have always wanted to,” she said. “We meet the people

The Lacombe Fit Body Boot Camp runs daily boot camps that combine high-intensity interval training, exercise stacking and periods of active rest, coached by certified personal trainers. In addition, yearly nutrition challenges are offered.

“We recently launched a new challenge called ‘The Little Black Dress’ and it’s about women empowerment and giving them an outlet and tools to become stronger and more empowered not only physically but emotionally,” she said.

Owner at Speedy Auto Glass enjoys small town feel Business nominated in the Small Business of the Year category

BY RYAN WELLICOME LACOMBE EXPRESS Speedy Auto Glass Lacombe owner Dave Temple never thought he would live and work in Lacombe. Temple hails from Calgary, where he worked and lived for over 40 years. Over the years, due to his work, he frequently found himself in Lacombe County.

“I would always come up here,” he said.

One day, when he was in the region, he received a phone call from his wife.

She told him to meet her in Lacombe to view houses. “We saw six places, picked the sixth one and picked up and moved out here,” he said.

He explained what he enjoys the most about Lacombe is its atmosphere.

“After working and living in Calgary for 40 plus years, I think the thing I really enjoy the most is that, even though we are a City, it’s a small town atmosphere. Someone might have an issue getting their car to us and I’ll say to them ‘I’ll just send over a crew to pick your car up at work then when it’s done we will take it back – then just come back tomorrow and square away with me.’

It’s that kind of attitude,” he said.

“You could never do that in Calgary. You would never see the car again whereas here you can do that sort of thing.”

Temple said that living in a place like Lacombe allows him the opportunity to become part of a large, wellknit community and know the customers he serve.

“You get to know people,”

he said. “You get to know your customers and that’s a wonderful feeling.”

With his business’ nomination in this year’s Chamber of Commerce Business Awards, his feelings regarding the City and his business strategy are confirmed.

“A lot of our business comes from word of mouth and is repeat business. Our goal is to make repeat customers,” he said. “To be nominated is validation that I think we are on the right track, that we do care and customers recognize that. It feels pretty special.”

Temple said what sets his business apart is the level of care that customers and their vehicles receive at his shop.

“We are very particular about what we do. We really tend to treat every vehicle that comes in like it’s our own so we take a lot of time and care.

We want to see you again so we do the little things to try and make a difference,” he said. “I think here, no matter who you are talking to, we exude that we actually care about what we are doing.

We make mistakes, everybody makes mistakes but I think genuinely, that people know we care and maybe that is why were are nominated.”

Temple said his business works with the Lacombe Kinsmen Club and Lacombe Daybreak Rotary Club, participating in events, lending a general hand or donating products for silent auctions.

“We kind of need to have each others back as a community. Part of it is you never know when you will be in a position to require that help. It can come at any time,” he said. “I think part of it is just being a good, responsible citizen.
