Due to the increased prevalence of chronic diseases as we age and their associated health implications, local authorities are particularly concerned about the driving abilities of older adults.

RoadSafetyBC is responsible for all road safety in BC and has several programs to accomplish its mandate.

All seniors that wish to continue driving past the age of 80 must be assessed for fitness to drive and an advanced notice will be mailed to the address on your drivers licence on your 79th birthday.

A request to provide a driver medical report will be mailed 60 days prior to a driver’s 80th birthday for completion within 45 days by a physician or nurse practitioner. Doctors are legally required to report patients whom they believe are unfit to drive regardless of age.

RoadSafetyBC adjudicates information received to determine fitness to drive using: •2 016 CCMTA Medical Standards for Drivers with BC Specific Guidelines; • A dministrative fairness principles and case law; • Evidence of public safety risk and current medical

information; • F urther assessment as required if there are road safety concerns; In a previous year, 150,000 assessments were done, including 11,000 unsolicited reports sent in by medical personnel, police, family, and ICBC. Declining cognitive abilities, seizures, psychiatric disorders, and problematic alcohol/ substance use are conditions of particular concern to road safety.

RoadSafetyBC uses various assessment tools in determining if a driver is fit to drive, including an ICBC road test.

For many seniors, receiving a notice to complete a driver medical report may be a mysterious and frightening prospect. A decision to cancel a licence must be based on reasonably reliable evidence of a medical issue and reasonably reliable evidence of road safety risk. In a recent year over 98 per cent of the 150,000 assessed had their drivers licence renewed.

If you’ve met Jimmy Logan once, you will likely remember him forever.

The president of the Mission Unit of the Canadian Cancer Society, Logan has spent the past 12 years volunteering his time, not only as president, but as a driver for cancer patients going for treatment and as the organizer of the annual Robbie Burns Night fundraiser.

Logan always has a story to tell and a smile to share. But the man everyone in Mission seems to know, has decided to step down as president.

But that doesn’t mean he’s going anywhere.

The 82-year-old said he plans to still be around, lending a hand where ever needed.

“I’m still going to be connected.

But they (volunteers) can do it all without me,” he said.

Like any good Scotsman, Logan said he will still organize the Robbie Burns Night fundraisers, like he has for the past eight years, whether he’s president of not.

Looking back, Logan said he’s enjoyed his time at the society.

“It’s been a wonderful 12 years now.

I’ve learned so much about sickness, you know, cancer.”

Logan became involved with the society because of his own battle with the disease.

In 2003 he was diagnosed with prostrate cancer and ended up attending a support group in Mission.

He ended up beating the disease.

“It changes your whole life. You feel so lucky. I had that surgery, nothing else, and touch wood I’ve never had a problem since.”

Shortly after, he was approached to take on the role as president of the society and he accepted.

It was like starting a new career.

Back in Scotland, Logan worked

at a weekly newspaper and then at the Scotland Daily Mail as a photographer and a photo engraver.

He left that job in 1957. Shortly after the paper closed down. Logan often jokes that there may be a connection between his leaving and he paper’s demise.

He eventually came to Calgary and started a graphics shop in Edmonton.

He began doing all the advertising work for Woodwards. That brought him to Vancouver and eventually Mission.

Now, after 12 years as president, Logan said it’s time to step down.

“These volunteers that are here with me have all been here now, five years. Some for 10. These are people filled with empathy and will do anything for you. It’s unbelievable the hours that are put in here,” said Logan.

On Tuesday, the annual Cops For Cancer Ride came to Mission and during that event, members of the society had a surprise for Logan.

Allan Mugford, regional director of the Canadian Cancer Society, presented Logan with a special award.

“Sometimes people just go beyond what we expect and what we even believe they can do. This is an award of courage. It says recognizing a volunteer who has furthered the mission of the society by demonstrating exceptional courage in his or her own personal battle with cancer. In doing so the individual serves as an inspiration and role model across the community,” said Mugford about Logan.

The outgoing president was shocked and thrilled.

“Honest to God I didn’t expect this at all. I’m proud to get this and I’m proud of the people in this office.”

Pumpkin Soup Ingredients: 1 can white beans (15 ounce, rinsed and drained) 1 onion (small, or 2 tsp. onion powder) 1 cup water 1 can pumpkin (15 ounces, plain) 1 can chicken or vegetable broth, low-salt (14.5 ounces) 1⁄2 teaspoon thyme or tarragon salt and pepper to taste (optional) 1tsp heavy cream - fresh Parsley or Coriander for garnish Preparation: Blend white beans, onion, and water. In a soup pot, mix bean puree with pumpkin, broth, and spices.

Healthy fats improve concentration Why do we need healthy fats?

A balanced diet helps maintain our good health throughout the life-cycle.

Everyone’s food intake each day should include some healthy fats. Even if you follow a low fat diet or are vegetarian, it is important to include oils that are rich in Omega-3 essential fatty acids (EFA’s).

These are found in fats that are not usually cooked, such as flax seed oil, borage oil, hemp seed oil, evening primrose oil, and salmon oil.

Eating salmon, mackerel, or sardines three times a week is one way to get the right dose of these hearthappy oils. Your brain will also thank you due to increased concentration, recall, and energy. These are not only recommended for the aging population, they are nutrient of choice for children with trouble concentrating in school, and those with ADHD. These healthy fats are necessary to build cells in the human body. Each cell has a lipid bi-layer made of these essential fatty acids. Skin and hair dryness are the typical result of deficiency. Consuming 1-2 tablespoons a day will give your body what it needs to get your metabolic fire burning.

Avoid fats that have no nutritional value such as refined vegetable oils,

found in clear bottles that have been made shelf-stable. Also avoid saturated or animal fat, and hydrogenated fats, such as shortening and hard margarine.

Did you know that shortening is the key ingredient in almost all storebought bakery products that makes them shelf-stable? It is also a very damaging fat, that has no nutritional value and causes obesity by slowing down the human metabolism.

If you avoid all shortening and hydrogenated oil including palm oil, you will avoid all the problematic food that causes obesity in the grocery store, including bread, buns, crackers, pie, cookies, cakes, boxed chocolates, and regular peanut butter.

Bake your own goodies instead with coconut oil, a healthy saturated fat that is composed of Omega-9 fatty acids, for brain development. Omega-9 is found in breast milk, and infant formula varieties also contain this important nutrient.

Buy natural peanut butter for your health and for your kids, with no fats added to detract from this fun and pulse-containing food.

Mission’s Ethel Beckingham couldn’t believe it when it happened. The crib player finally managed to get a perfect hand. The highest possible hand at cribbage is 29 points. It comprises all four fives and the Jack of nobs (a Jack that is the same suit as the turn card). It is extremely rare to score a 29 hand in cribbage. The odds of getting a perfect hand is about 200,000 to one.

many illnesses are tied to body weight.

Maintaining a healthy immune system also can require eating a balanced, nutritionally sound diet.

Mission’s Get Up & Go! Program is a collaborative program between the Fraser Health Falls and Injury Prevention and Osteofit (BC Women’s Hospital & Health Centre’s Osteoporosis Program).

It provides an entry level exercise program for seniors with balance and mobility impairment who would otherwise be unable to attend a community based exercise class. It is a safe exercise program specially designed to improve strength, balance and coordination as well as functional ability independence and quality of life.

Subsidy for this program may be available through a referral from the Fraser Health Fall and Injury Prevention Program.
