Falling for autumn

I

have to admit, I love fall.

While I enjoy spring’s blossoms and longer days, not to mention summer’s blue skies and warm temperatures, when those first crisp afternoons of September come calling, I’m ready.

Here in Oak Bay, the resident squirrels are scampering overhead in the oaks collecting acorns, the chestnuts are ready to fall, and the Oak Bay village is busy planning its Halloween and Christmas activities.

Indeed, after those lazy days of summer, fall is busy for many of us.

Families are rediscovering the back-to-school routine, balancing sports, music and other extracurriculars, gardeners are planning and preparing for next season, and the many community groups that took a break over the warmer months are back, focusing on the task at hand.

Thumbing through this issue of Tweed, you’ll find a few subtle celebrations of autumn, beginning with our lead story, a tour through Holly and Don Kelly’s Craftsman beauty on St. Patrick Street.

Inviting throughout the seasons, the couple has created a home that embraces both timeless charm and today’s modern amenities. Decorated with Holly’s expert eye, there’s no doubt fall will be warmly experienced in this corner of Oak Bay. W

hen house shopping, it can be difficult to pinpoint just what makes a particular property the right one. Certainly there’s the style and character, the location, the flow of the rooms and the garden.

But sometimes a house just feels, well, right.

“As soon as we walked in, I loved this house,” says Holly Kelly, who with husband Don purchased their 1911 St. Patrick Street home two years ago. “It just really felt right.

It’s a connection that you feel.”

Work commitments had drawn the couple away for a few years, but come 2014, the time was right to return to Oak Bay. “We always missed Victoria and the Island and when we had the opportunity to return, our hearts were set on moving back into Oak Bay,” says Holly. “This has always been home to us.”

The couple agreed on their goal: “Downsizing to about 2,100 square feet, while still maintaining the qualities of a newer home, and not feeling like we were compromising,” Don says.

Additionally, while both kids are on their own, “we still wanted to have a big enough house that when they come home, everybody has a room,” Holly adds.

After looking at many properties, some more than once, the St. Patrick Street home won their hearts immediately.

They knew they wanted an older home with character – their previous home had been a 1910 charmer on Lincoln

Road – and the 1911 Craftsman fit the bill. At the same time, it also afforded modern amenities they needed, or the space to add them, like the undeveloped basement.

“We knew it was the right home the moment we entered,” Holly says. “Thankfully we’re always on the same page.”

The home also met their practical needs and wants: It’s an easy walk to the village shops and restaurants, the ocean, Willows beach and golf club, and is a quick cycle or drive downtown.

Little is known about the home’s history, although neighbour Robert Taylor, from the Oak Bay Heritage Foundation, learned the property was the 152nd home permit issued by Oak Bay and was owned at the time by J.A. Mair.

By the time the Kellys were ready to move in, many updates had already been undertaken by the previous owner, and the bones of the house were good. “We loved the high ceilings, cove mouldings, many architectural features and the overall style and grace of the home. While the rooms are not as large as those in our last home, creating multi-purpose spaces and the intelligent layout of the home optimized the use of space,” Holly says. “The layout has fewer rooms and limited hallway space so it provides us the great entertaining space we wanted, a generous sized kitchen and four large bedrooms.

Our neighbours call it ‘the little-big house’ as it appears smaller from the outside but they can’t believe the space inside.”

Updates in the main living areas included adding much-needed storage with a kitchen island and buffet, improving the lighting and removing a century of wallpaper. “We breathed new life into

the home with lighter, more current colours that complimented the original stained glass, unique architectural aspects of the home and our eclectic furniture stylings,” says Holly, also a decorator for many years.

While it can be tempting with an older home to knock out walls to open up smaller spaces, that can risk the heritage feel and style.

“Too often people go too far with renovating.

We wanted it to have its charm and character, but give it a little fresher feel.”

The Kellys chose to keep the original fireplace separating the kitchen from the living spaces and use open furniture placement and consistent wall colours to create flow and an open feel.

The home’s design and siting also helps.

“I love how much light comes into this house; even though it’s an older home, it’s just so lightfilled,” Holly says.

A real surprise was the upstairs den – once dark, long and narrow. “My first through was, ‘What am I going to do with this?’” Holly recalls.

By painting the ceiling and choosing appropriate furnishings, the joint office-sitting room is now a favourite place to settle in to read or watch TV. Downstairs, the formerly dark, unfinished basement – home only to an uninviting laundry – now offers a cosy and welcoming living area, including a

Plan B brings a bright future

The community has a long history of examining projects, hearing from the public, considering and then rejecting.

Occasionally approval has come on the first application, such as was the case with the ‘Penny,’ but in other cases a rejection of one application led to something far better for the community. 2272 and 2278 Oak Bay Ave. are good examples.

Built in 1941 by C.F Hunter, these two duplexes, 6,300 square feet in total, were built during the war for $4,400. Originally standing proudly at the entrance to the village at Monterey and Oak Bay Avenue, their condition deteriorated over the years to the extent that it was obvious to many that it was time for renewal. In the 1980s and ‘90s, “Careaminiums” we’re all the rage and long-time residents of Hampshire will recall the lengthy debate about one such application that was planned for the Pollard estate on a Hampshire cul-de-sac across from Oak Bay High School.

Another, similar but smaller, application was made for the Oak Bay/Monterey corner but this too was rejected with the hope by council that something on a smaller scale, incorporating the two older buildings would come along.

Meanwhile, in the village lots was happening. The arrival of Starbucks was the start of the shakeup, but it was the building of the Penny and the arrival of another gallery, The Avenue in 2002, to join Dale and The Gallery in Oak Bay, that created more momentum.

at a sidewalk seat, eating a chocolate croissant with my coffee. It was obvious that these two young entrepreneurs were in for a bright future. Matt at the Penny could see that too. And then it all came together.

Gunther Heinrich, of Winchester Gallery fame, decided to buy the two buildings and consolidate his operations, and with one as the gallery, was looking for an appropriate use for the second duplex. What better combination than art and food, and Italian at that!

Matt was looking for a location for a liquor store, and with government regulations at the time limiting how far way from a pub a liquor outlet could be, the location next door, although small, was ideal. Many hurdles had to get jumped, including finding enough parking for the development.

Thanks to Gunther, lawyer David Adams and the Oak Bay administrator Bill Cochrane, this problem was solved.

And so it came to pass that on Aug. 27, 2003, Oak Bay residents saw a very strange sight on the Avenue. Andrew Moyer and a curly haired mayor rolled a 98 kilogram round of organic emmenthal cheese from the old Ottavio’s to the new one. (A police escort was necessary and the rind had an asphalty taste!). The combination of Winchester Galleries and Ottavio’s has been a winner and the use of outdoor art at the gallery has been the inspiration, along with Barb Adams, for the displays of public art in the community.

In this case the community has come out a big winner, and it’s a good lesson for all of us. If something is rejected, make sure there is a plan B and C. The community is still waiting on the Oak Bay Lodge.

Oak Bay doctor pioneered world-leading cancer treatment

T

he voice at the other end of the telephone was strong and mysterious. “I read your article about rum running,” (see Tweed Spring 2016). “I have a story about watching a guy loading cases of booze onto a great big boat when I was a kid in about 1930.”

Curious to learn more, I arranged to meet the caller at his Oak Bay apartment. At 95, Dr. John MacDonald cuts a dashing figure: he is tall, well-dressed, with a full head of silver hair and a twinkle in his eyes that hints at a lifetime of spirited adventures.

John C.F. MacDonald was born in Kelowna on Sept. 24, 1920 and grew up in Oak Bay. The family home was on Roslyn Road, “about three blocks away from where I am now,” he says.

He attended Willows and Monterey schools. Happy childhood memories in Oak Bay include rugby and tennis matches and playing badminton in the Willows exhibition buildings. “It was a great place to live. From Roslyn Road to Monterey school we walked across open fields.”

In those days the street cars rattled along Oak Bay Avenue, and MacDonald and his chums would hop a ride to

SAVES LIVES’ the Empire Theatre downtown for Saturday morning matinees. En route, they’d plan a regular act of mischief. “We’d get on here at Hampshire,” he recalls with a smile. “Someplace around Richmond, the Coke truck always came by and we’d just reach out and help ourselves.”

MacDonald graduated from Oak Bay High School in 1937, and in 1941 earned a first-class degree in physics and math from the University of British Columbia. During the war, he served as an army signals officer.

In Terrace, he was assigned to a secret armoured train project. Later, he commanded the 21st Army Field Regiment Signals Section and went to England in September 1943. On D-Day, he landed on Juno Beach under shellfire.

“There were a lot of corpses,” he recalls. “We got the hell out of it and went as far inland as we could.”

In 1950, he married his sweetheart, Sheila Duggan, and the couple had three daughters. After earning a PhD in molecular physics at the University of Toronto, he was recruited to work at Toronto General Hospital.

His skills proved crucial to refining new medical technology that was being developed uniquely in Canada. The wartime Manhattan Project had unleashed the atomic bomb and Canada had played its part by building a reactor facility at Chalk River, Ontario. In peacetime, the race was on to develop a medical and commercial use for atomic technology. With funding from the National Research Council, two complementary but independent research teams – one in Saskatoon under the leadership of Dr. Harold Johns and one in London, Ontario under the leadership of Dr. Ivan Smith – worked concurrently on using the radioactive cobalt-60

isotope processed at Chalk River to treat cancer. Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) provided the London team with a purposely built “El Dorado beam therapy unit” for medical use, but the device was experimental and had never been tested on a patient.

In the fall of 1951, Dr. MacDonald worked seven days a week and commuted between Toronto and Victoria Hospital in London where the cobalt unit was installed. “I made all the protection measurements to determine how much radiation was coming out of the unit to make sure everybody was Dr. John MacDonald today safe,” he says. “Then, I did the treat(right) and during the ment plan for the patients.”

BORN to SING Singer Stephanie Greaves showcases breadth of talent

S

itting with Stephanie Greaves on a rainy evening in Oak Bay, it’s hard not to immediately picture her on stage with a microphone in hand.

Despite the quiet atmosphere in the coffee shop where we sit among a handful of other caffeine addicts, Greaves radiates an energy that’s palpable. Her shoulders are straight, her smile wide, and her hands animated as she starts immediately chatting like an old friend.

Minutes pass and we eventually steer the conversation to her lifelong passion for singing and her fearless takeover of every stage she’s stepped foot on.

“I’ve been singing from as old as I can remember and previous to that,” she says. She was the kid in the room full of adults, clearing her throat and asking impatiently for everyone to listen because she was about to perform.

In fact, she recalls a favourite story of her mother’s from a childhood trip to England: in the midst of a crowded fair, the young Greaves disappeared from her parents’ side, only to reappear on stage in the middle of an adult talent show, singing “Mr. Golden Sun.” Years of singing around the house followed, along with various contests and a stint doing dinner theatre at the Oak Bay Beach Hotel.

Fast forward to today, and the singer has turned her pasSTEPHANIE GREAVES sion into a career, due in large part to a fortuitous encounter with the Naden Band of the Royal Canadian Navy more than 15 years ago.

Initially stepping in to fill a vocalist role for the band, Greaves soon found a relationship growing with the navy musicians.

“Eventually it just turned into, ‘Hey Steph, we’re playing here, you can sing right?’” says Greaves with a laugh.

Her growing relationship with Naden gave her a modicum of stability unknown to many in the entertainment business, she says, and she’s been grateful for it every day.

“I’ve been so lucky that (these opportunities) tend to fall in my lap,” she says. “You’re just always feeling thankful for the time you have and the memories you’re making.”

And through her connection to Naden, Greaves has had experiences that others would give their vocal cords for.

In addition to touring Canada and internationally, she’s performed for the Governor General, at the BC Lions halftime show, and even for Her Royal Majesty herself, Queen Elizabeth II. In 2010, she toured with Naden and fellow crooner Ken Lavigne across Canada to celebrate the band’s 100th anniversary, stopping in metropolitan cities and small towns alike, which gave her a deeper look into the landscape of her own country.

Bob Dylan is my hero. It has been wonderful to live the last 50-plus years with his music. I still remember my brother Tom telling me to listen to his first LP, because “he’s like a white James Brown.” Tom knew how to get my attention in the early 1960s.

James Brown was my hero then.

Louis Armstrong is right up there with Dylan and Gary Snyder now.

TEA WITH JOSEPH BLAKE How long have you lived and worked in Oak Bay? I’ve lived in Oak Bay for 36 years, and before that I ran a store, Earth House Hold Natural Foods, in the heart of the village from 1970 to 1985. It was the first bulk food, organic food, hippie store in Victoria. We bought organic produce, home-baked bread, herb plants, eggs and many other products from customers. Things were a little looser in the ‘70s.

Who is your family?

I had three boys with my first wife, midwifed their births and was an active dad in their education. They’re 39, 42, and 44 and great dads. I have five grandkids. My wife, Lynne Milnes, and I had our daughter Emma 26 years ago.

She was 1 1/2 pounds at birth and left the hospital’s special care nursery after four months at a robust four pounds.

Lynne is a development officer at UVic and serves on several boards working on environmental and social issues. She’s my inspiration.

What are you most well known for here in Oak Bay? I’ve had three distinct lives over the last 45 years. Some remember me from Earth House Hold. Some know me as the guy who wrote about jazz-blues-popular music and later as a travel writer. Lately, folks probably know me from my work with the Community Association of Oak Bay, my project to raise the Sno’uyutth welcome pole at Oak Bay High, the creation of the Sno’uyutth Legacy Scholarship for Indigenous students’ post-secondary education, the Syrian refugee project for the municipally owned house on Hampshire Avenue, and my current project to help raise $100,000 to buy a concert grand piano for the Dave Dunnet Community Theatre at Oak Bay High.

What else have you been involved in?

I’ve written for EAT magazine for 15 years. I’m music editor for Pacific Rim Review of Books. I travel (mostly by house exchange) around the world and write about our adventures.

Tell us about your work and/or hobbies?

Since selling the store, I’ve combined writing and gardening as a vocation and a passion. I still do that in semi-retirement. I turned 70 last summer, but I’m not slowing down much. I still love music and enjoy my collection of 10,000 recordings. I still know what it means to miss New Orleans.

I love travel and look forward to returning to Oaxaca, Mexico. I love working in my garden where we grow much of the food we eat. I love continuing to learn about B.C. wine.

What brings you joy?

My love of family and friends and neighbours. Learning about new things. Reading. Eating. Giving back to a community and country that I love.

Who are some of the most interesting people you’ve met?

During the Sno’uyutth welcome pole project, I loved meeting Songhees artists Butch and Clarence Dick and other members of the Nation. That was a real gift. I loved meeting Ellis Marsalis, Charles Neville, Allen Toussaint, Irma Thomas and Dr. Michael White down in New Orleans.

Anything else you’d like us to know?

I want you to know how important music and the arts are in making a better world. I want you to know how important it is to donate to the Keys to Our Success piano project, and how important it is to get involved in your community.

Oak Bay writer couple publishes books the same year

ictoria is a tourist town, a college town, a hightech town, a government town. Victoria is also a literary town.

Kipling waxed poetic about us. Emily Carr chronicled a Victorian life unlike any other. Bruce Hutchison chronicled politicians with a literary flair at a time when political biographies were either sappy hagiographies, or as dry as a teetotaler’s parlour.

In the 1960s, W.P. Kinsella drove taxi and operated a pizza parlour while studying writing at the University of Victoria.

These days, you can barely order a coffee without either the barista or the customer behind you being a literati.

One day I opened the newspaper to learn the fellow down the block was a finalist in a prestigious short-story contest.

fin is a damned fine one, too.

We nurture writers here like we do rhododendrons and we attract them like hummingbirds to sugar water. While it is not unheard of that two writers sharing a household are both publishing books in the same calendar year, it remains rare enough to warrant celebration.

On an Oak Bay cul-de-sac of tidy lawns surrounding post-war ranchers and bungalows, one home will be responsible for two titles this year. The books depict worlds apart. Jenny Manzer’s novel Save Me, Kurt Cobain (Dela-

corte) was released earlier this year, while David Leach’s nonfiction piece, Chasing Utopia: The Future of the Kibbutz in a Divided Israel (ECW Press), will arrive in bookstores in September.

Writing is a solitary chore even when practiced in proximity to another craftsmen.

“One writer married to another writer; they’re not going to edit the book for you,” Manzer said. “They don’t have the time.”

Manzer, a veteran magazine writer and editor, found inspiration for her novel one day while We nurture writers scanning a newspaper online. She here like we do read an article about the history rhododendrons and of a popular Victoria nightclub she’d frequented as a student. we attract them like The story had a twist. While hummingbirds to many up-and-coming acts played Harpo’s, the club missed out on sugar water. an unknown trio from Seattle who went on to become the biggest of them all. The scruffy threesome wound up playing a dive bar. It turned out to be Nirvana’s only performance in Victoria. Hardly anyone attended.

From this true-life event, Manzer spins an engaging story about a teenage girl named Nico, who embarks on a quest to find the mother who abandoned her. The anxious 14-turning-15-year-old girl escapes the tribulations of daily live at Vic High through a soundtrack of 1990s alternative rock.

“She takes a lot of solace in Nirvana’s music,” Manzer said. “As teens do.”

The novel, aimed at an audience the same age as the protagonist though worthy of an adult readership, is filled with familiar Victoria landmarks – Lyle’s Place, the Blue Bridge, Wellburn’s Market, Capitol Iron, the Victoria Clipper, Mount Royal Bagels, the Dutch Bakery. A chance sighting convinces the teen that Kurt Cobain might have staged his death. Not only does he (if it is him) live in a cabin on Vancouver Island, the young protagonist might be the product of a romantic liaison between the singer and her mother.

The novel is filled with snippets of lovely description, such as, “The man leaned against the ship window, resting his head as if it were heavy, filled with ball bearings.” “Cold in Victoria was damp. It clung to you like a layer of fish skin.”

“Power bangs, like an awning above her face.”

With two children at home, Manzer wrote at the end of busy days including meal preparations, a 9-to-5 job, household chores and family activities. After nightfall, with son A.J. and daughter Brier asleep and exhaustion a cursed presence, Manzer explored the story of her heroine. A disciplined 500 words one night was followed by another 500 words the next night, followed by another (yawn) 500 words, a manuscript taking form through sleep deprivation.

Deeply immersed in researching 1990s bands, she found herself absent-mindedly humming Nirvana songs, not a behaviour usually associated with a self-described “soccer mom from Oak Bay.”

Meanwhile, her husband, now an associate professor at the University of Victoria, travelled overseas to Middle East hotspots to research his own book. (He’d volunteered at a kibbutz as a young man.) Not only was there concern for his well-being, but there was an inevitable comparison of a couple’s opportunities to write. At one point, the diaperchanging standings stood at Wife 150, Husband 0. That’s a lot of catching up to do in a co-parenting household.

The pair met while both worked for Monday Magazine, a more predictable and less exotic encounter than that of their friends, another writing couple, English professor Bill Gaston and former professional ballet dancer Dede Crane, who met at a day of silence at a Buddhist retreat when she asked him for a cigarette.

Other local literary couples spring to mind – the poets Lorna Crozier and Patrick Lane; the biographer Maria Tippett and historian Peter Clarke on South Pender Island; the novelists Esi Edugyan (Half Blood Blues) and Steven Price, whose much-anticipated historic novel By Gaslight is set for release in August; and, the popular historians Frances Backhouse (Once They Were Hats) and Mark Zuehlke (the peerless Canadian Battle Series), who both had titles released last year.

A book is published and it is time to write another. Lest one think being a published author is all glamour, Manzer recently spent 11 hours of a rare day off cheering children at play in a park. It’s no surprise to learn she’s already begun writing her next work, a children’s book with a baseball theme. Write what you know.

ove can make us do foolish things. It can make one downright forlorn when the focus of one’s desire was born in 1890 and hasn’t existed for almost 70 years.

I’ve always had a weakness for the image of the antique. The intrigue of old buildings, boats, vehicles and aura of social graces that linger with them has always held me spellbound. A comment by volunteer Oak Bay archivist Kathy Denny about the existence of rail tracks in the boulevard at the Uplands’ Midland Road circle prompted my imagination about the matter of streetcars in Oak Bay, and a somewhat awkward love affair began.

In the fall of 1888, prominent Victorian David William Higgins returned from his honeymoon zealous for the newly built Seattle electric tramway and determined Victoria needed such a transit system. Victoria was in a progressive mood and was investigating the development of gas and electric lighting and the latter fit perfectly with the goals of the British Colonist newspaper editor Higgins and Captain J.D. Warren, acting for the National Electric

Light and Motor Company.

Winning the overwhelming approval of the Victoria city council, a loan was procured for $40,000 based on an interest of $2,000 per annum, without any rise in the current tax base, a bylaw was created, and in the May of 1889 the National Electric Tramway and Lighting Company came into existence. The pole lead, and the coal-fired electric plant contract was awarded to T.W. Patterson of Bell, Larkin, and Patterson, the steel rail was ordered from Antwerp, and four streetcars arrived from St. Catherine’s, and in what seems by today’s CRD standards a bolt of lightning, the electric streetcar service was ready for trial by February of 1890. The Victoria region had the third operational streetcar service in Canada and became the envy of the lower Mainland.

Route 1 ran from the fountain roundabout at the intersection of Government, Douglas and Hillside Avenue along Douglas Street, over the James Bay Bridge and onto the Outer Wharf. Route 2 made its way from Rock Bay, up Fort and terminated at the Jubilee Hospital.

After some friction from a number of Esquimalt residents, including the erection of a fence across the proposed right away, a third route to Esquimalt through Vic West, across the infamous Point Ellis Street Bridge was agreed upon. In 1896 the Point Ellis Street Bridge collapsed and 55 passengers were killed, making it one of the worst streetcar and bridge disasters in North American history.

The Tankards get on track Spurred on by Kathy Denny’s comments about the existence of the original streetcar tracks, I consulted those goodwill ambassadors of urban archaeology, the Tankards, and we set out on an archaeological field trip. Our first observation was Midland Road didn’t actually exist in 1913 and Dunlevy Street, unless one uses a little imagination, doesn’t seem to line up with the Uplands circle. Luck was with us. Standing about on the Westside of Uplands Park, local resident Deirdre Vincent asked if we were lost and whether we needed some assistance. Explaining our plight, she beamed and said she knew exactly where to look. Led by our volunteer guide and her canine partner, Maddy, we followed off behind her like waddling ducklings, and she took us right to the tracks. Knowing most of the original track was torn up and scrapped, seeing the boulevard tracks was entertaining and exciting. Later research determined that instead of lifting the rails in the Uplands, the “T” portion of the steel was removed and the base left in place. It became apparent by the direction of the rails that during its operation, the tracks were laid along the east side of the existing Midland Road, followed the western perimeter of Uplands Park and lined up with Dunlevy Road. Impossible as it may be to envision, even in the Uplands, we all agreed: there are two sides of the track. The Tankards, after bestowing their best wishes on our gracious guide, decided to reconvene at the Snug to specify the details of their discovery. It was thirsty work, indeed.

“So the streetcars came in two colours,” I informed the Tankards, “the racy hunter green and gold of BC Electric that had eventually taken over the ownership of the tram system following four separate issues of receivership; however, by the end of the streetcar era, all the cars were painted the vermilion of the original streetcars. “Even Joan Dunsmuir, the widow of coal baron John Dunsmuir, as head of the Union Colliery, got into the act,” I added. “She served a writ on Tram Ways’ coal debt, the fuel for the power house, 38

and the company went into its first record of receivership.”

“In 1913, The Uplands Limited, the parent company of the subdivision, contributed $1,817.13 for the last half-mile of the line, provided ornamental trolley line hangers and fancy Uplands destination signs painted in red and gold.

“And before you ask,” I continued, “there is no dog in this story.”

But then I remembered: “Wait! We have Maddy, the wonder dog.”

“Cool,” they agreed.

Following the Second World War, the streetcars vanished like top hats and fox wraps. Pressure from major automobile manufactures like Ford and GM promoted the notion that streetcars were relics of the past, buses were a must, and modern was the key to the future. BC Electric began removing tracks in 1946 and the last streetcar ride terminated the system in 1948. The spin doctoring was so complete that the streetcars not only vanished from people’s memories, but the whole episode seems to have been erased from Victoria’s collective memory.

What’s a guy to do? Considering today’s debate about the negative effects of the internal combustion engine, global warming and the necessity of further highway construction, the removal of an electric railway now seems like a step backwards. (Though the secondary tobacco smoke on those streetcars was apparently worse than a Los Angeles smog inversion.)

However, love always finds its way. I stand, staring blankly in the middle of the crosswalk, on Oak Bay Avenue just like the rest of the village shoppers; however, unlike them I imagine the little brick red “Birney” streetcars wobbling along, passing with a clang-clang-clang, and a ding-dingding, right past me and then under the old blue and white Oak Bay sign that has acted as the Gibraltar into Oak Bay for oh so long. barriemoen@gmail.com

Parting Shot

A DANCE OF JOY AND JEALOUSY

T

his wonderful shot of Oak Bay’s wildlife in action was captured by photographer Steve Smith.

“About an hour before a low tide of 1.4 metres and 90 minutes before sunset and nobody’s there – there being the small gravel beach on the south side of Turkey Head,” says Smith, who had come down to photograph a pair of harlequin ducks that usually schlepped around with their beaks in the seaweed at this phase of the tide. “I sat down on a rock, unpacked my camera gear and waited for someone to turn up.”

After about 20 minutes, a couple of glaucous winged gulls stopped by and started poking about for crabs in the newly uncovered seaweed on top of a rock. Having no luck, they began swimming around the edges of the rock exploring under the ledges near the surface.

“Suddenly one caught a crab, jumped on top of the rock and proceeded to do a happy dance with wings outspread and the crab held triumphantly before it.

The second gull jumped up right behind the crabby gull and did a jealous dance, also with wings out-

spread. Seeing two of the basic emotions – joy and jealousy – being displayed on a rock adjacent to my own, I took this photo,” Smith says.

“Before taking up my position I made sure that the sun was not directly behind me. Having a decent angle between the sun and my line of view meant that I would get more feather detail. It also produced a nice shadow of the crab on its captor’s chest.”
