The Mission Chamber will be keeping with the current model of having 6 judges and engaging the community for their votes online as the 7th judge. This process will take place over the month of November. The finalists in each category will be announced in early January 2017.

The winners of the 2016 Business Excellence Awards will be honored at the Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Gala in February 2017. “This spectacular event will focus on the success of all the finalists with an opportunity to network with many of our local business owners.” says David Sawatzky.

A hearty welcome to September everyone. It's hard to believe but already the leaves on the trees are beginning to change colour, the evenings are a little cooler and our routines are getting a little busier as we slip into fall. The past two months were the summation of a beautiful summer, and incredibly action packed for your Chamber of Commerce!

The theme of this summer should have been, "go play outside" because that is what we did… Our chamber staff, board, members and volunteers spent a considerable amount of time in the community this past couple of months; meeting with local business' during our business walks, visiting with tourists and locals alike at local hot spots and events, and engaging members every chance we could. Another summer highlight - our #exploremission top 20 photo contest was a huge hit with close to 500 photo submissions! This exercise surely opened everyone's eyes to the awesomeness and adventures

This month like most is shaping up to be both busy and fruitful. To highlight a few mile markers and events; this month I have the privilege to be presenting our first policy submission to the Canadian Chamber of Commerce AGM in Regina Saskatchewan. Continuing with advocacy, we are also once again hosting our Annual Member of Parliament Round Table event on the 14th. where we facilitate an open two way conversation with our MP Jati Sidhu. Our monthly luncheon on the 15th will feature a presentation by the District of Mission and an exciting

Jo-Anne Chadwick is a familiar face in the Chamber world as she has volunteered her time over many years on the MRCC Tourism Committee, MRCC Board of Directors and most well known for her role as President of the Bald Eagle Festival. We are very pleased to have Jo-Anne join us on a permanent basis as our “Office Administrator and Tourism Services Manager.” Jo-Anne brings a wealth of knowledge in Tourism, administration, finance and volunteer management. As a local tourism operator and business owner, Jo-Anne understands the struggles and needs of the tourism industry in Mission.

On June 20, 2016, the provincial and federal governments announced proposed changes to the Canada Pension Plan (CPP). Since then, the B.C. government has commenced a public consultation process to seek input from businesses and other stakeholders regarding the proposed changes.

The Canadian Chamber network, of which the Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce is a part of, passed a resolution regarding the changes to the CPP at their 2015 AGM in Ottawa. The Chamber recommends that government allow Canadians to voluntarily contribute more to their CPP. In an effort to bring our members up to date on the proposed changes and potential consequences, the Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce is bringing forward the facts of the proposed changes for discussion.

Current CPP Contribution Requirements Under the current CPP, employers and employees each contribute 4.95% of a salaried person’s earnings between $3,500 and $54,900, up to a yearly maximum of $2,356.20.

Self-employed workers must pay both portions for a total of 9.9%.

Proposed Changes to CPP The new agreement would see the upper salary limit progressively increase to $82,700, and would aim at moving from a payout of 25% of earnings to a 33% payout.

CPP rates will have to increase if the income replacement rises from one quarter to one third.

The increase to CPP contributions is an additional 2% (1% for employees and 1% for employers) on top of the current 9.9% phased in over 5 years starting in 2019.

“With CPP already set at 9.9% (shared equally between employers and employees) and Employment Insurance at 4.5%, along with federal and provincial income taxes,

Canada’s payroll tax burden is one of the highest in the world.” Says David Sawatzky, President, Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Potential Impacts to Increasing CPP Since employers pay half of the contributions, this will reduce much needed cash flow in many businesses.

Employers may have to halt job creation in order to pay this CPP increase or delay important investments.

Although there’s never a right time for a payroll tax, the fragile state of our economy makes this a particularly bad time. The worst thing Canada can do now is end up with a patchwork of retirement plans. Such a system would severely impact worker mobility and regional competitiveness across the country.

“Our members are always concerned about any increase to payroll taxes and the effect it has on business, particularly small businesses.” adds Sawatzky.

Potential Next Steps On July 15, the B.C. government asked for input from B.C. residents and businesses. Details on this consultation effort can be found at http://engage.gov.bc.ca/ canadapensionplan/.

The BC Chamber of Commerce is currently working on a submission to government on behalf of their members of which the MRCC is a member. Individual Chambers are encouraged to provide their own letters to government.

The Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce is calling on our members to submit their concerns, questions or comments on these proposed changes to the Chamber via email at execdir@missionchamber.bc.ca to be included in our letter to government.

In our FVRD, more than 65% of the waste sent to landfill is not garbage. We can do better.

The Fraser Valley Regional District will phase-in new regional sorting requirements for recyclables and organics (kitchen scraps and yard waste) starting with a public awareness campaign in 2018. These requirements will apply to everyone across the region.

“Mission has had great success with recycling and residential composting (“Rot Pot”) programs for more than 20 years and the people who live here understand the benefits of recovering valuable resources,” says Barry Azevedo, Manager of Environmental Services, District of Mission.

Whether or not you have mastered recycling and composting at your place of business, you are invited to help shape how the FVRD will deliver on this priority action of the regional Solid Waste Management Plan.

“We opened this discussion with Mission Chamber members earlier this year to let them know this was coming. We now have specific questions for local businesses to help shape the rollout of the new requirements,” says Jason Lum, FVRD Director. “We need to engage all sectors from across the region if we want to significantly reduce the amount of waste going to landfill,” he adds.
