Crowd helps Orr celebrate birthday TRE VOR CR AWLEY
After the Canadian sitting volleyball team suffered a tough defeat at the hands of the
hometown Brazilians on Friday, the 5,000-strong crowd started singing a familiar song.
However, it wasn’t a nationalistic chant or anthem. Even sung in Portuguese, it’s still easy to
pick out the happy birthday tune. The crowd belted out the salutations in recognition of a Canadian sit-
ting volleyball player who had just turned 20 years old. Jaffray’s Shacarra Orr. “I was overwhelmed,”
Orr said. “It was amazing.” It was a special day for Orr, not just because of her birthday, but also because —despite the team’s loss — it was the first time a Canadian sitting volleyball team had played in the Paralympics. Before the squad hit the court, they made
sure to celebrate with Orr. “I woke up to Jen Oates jumping on my head singing to me, then when I went into the cafeteria, everyone was singing,” Orr said. “They had a balloon, they had cake, they wrote me a card.

Cranbrook RCMP were kept busy enforcing speed limits in the school zones this past week. While kids got back to school last week the Cranbrook RCMP were keeping an eye on the speed zones in and around the schools in an attempt to educate people and remind them of the 30km/hr school zones. Cranbrook RCMP set up several radar enforcement zones and noted that 2nd Street South in front of Laurie Middle School was one of the “hot spots” for the week. “Cranbrook RCMP interacted with more than forty drivers in the school zones alone this past week. About half of those were pulled over
in front of Laurie Middle School,” an RCMP press release said. Police also noted that a high number of vehicles were pulled over on 2nd Street North. Although Mount Baker Secondary School is on Baker Street, the playing fields back onto 2nd Street North. There is a 30km/hr zone on 2nd Street North between Western Financial Place and 14th Avenue. Several vehicles were also pulled over for failing to stop for school busses. Cranbrook RCMP will continue to monitor speeds in all school zones throughout the school year.
