Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities Pedal for Kids left for Olds shortly after 9 a.m. It was the first leg of a fiveday 500-km cycling tour that will go through Cochrane, Canmore and Banff before finishing in Calgary. New traffic tie-ups are in store for motorists in south Red Deer as work begins on two major road projects. Work crews are preparing a new access to a commercial expansion planned for Southpointe Junction on the west side of Taylor Drive, between 19th and 22nd Streets. Wayne Gustafson, engineering services manager for the City of Red Deer, said there will be some lane closures. Flag people will also be directing traffic at the south end of Taylor Drive. Crews are busy adding an additional southbound lane and creating a signaled intersection as access to the future shopping complex. The project, which is mostly being paid for by the developer, is expected to take at least another 1 ½ months, to the end of construction season — or longer if the rainy weather continues, said Gustafson. Next year, other roadwork will be needed in this area.

Younger people with debilitating conditions, such as multiple sclerosis, Huntington disease and early-onset Alzheimer’s, will also benefit from the scanner, she added. As well, D’Souza believes it will be used, as needed, to diagnose some of the 60 residents of the assisted living facility next door.

A handy piece of medical equipment that could keep more seniors out of hospitals was donated to the Extendicare Michener Hill facility. The long-term care home recently received a $10,000 bladder scanner from the Red Deer Legion. Although the device is not commonly available at long-term care centres, “it’s very essential to residents… we’re very grateful to get it,” said Melissa D’Souza, recreational therapist and director at the facility. The small scanner looks something like an ultrasound and is used to de-
