Mixed martial arts (MMA) MMA is one of the fastest-growing sports in the world. MMA combines various styles of fighting in a no-holds-barred style of combat. Punching, kicking and classic martial arts moves are part of MMA. Wrestling may be thrown in for added fun as well. Fitness classes geared around MMA will incorporate many of the moves without the actual combat taking place. Therefore, expect to push muscles and flexibility to their peak.

“We seem to really hit it good with the youth and with the adults. There’s a lot of variety with what we’re offering,” she said. “But we’re trying to look at what we can do to bring in more seniors.” Next month, a special brochure will be out specifically aimed at seniors and highlighting the activities available to them. Copies of it will be available at the Golden Circle Senior Resource Centre and city facilities.

Another group getting extra attention includes caregivers and parents who are looking after young children during the day and are looking for fun activities.

The city is also looking to promote further all of the programming it offers during school professional development (PD) days. A large variety of day camps and other activities are available for youngsters whose working parents need to find someone to care for their children.

L LANGUAGE CLASSES: A WORLD OF POSSIBILITIES

earning a new language opens the door to a world of possibilities. Even though some people master a second language out of curiosity or pleasure, it is a real necessity for many others.

Did you know that around 6,000 languages are spoken around the globe? Out of that total, about 50 are used by approximately 60 per cent of the world’s population. Mandarin tops the list as the language spoken by the greatest number of people. English, Spanish, and French are the main languages spoken in Canada and the U.S. Arabic, German, Portuguese, Russian, Italian, and Hindi are just a few of the other popular languages spoken in North America.

Why learn another language? There are many answers to this question. Some people do it in preparation for travelling, or so they can converse with someone they’ve met, or to better qualify for a job. In

the era of multiculturalism and globalization, being able to express yourself clearly and communicate your ideas in several languages is an enormous advantage.

During a job interview, for example, having more than one language can set apart a candidate.

Look for a course that will teach you ba sic structural language skills (spelling, pronunciation, conjugation, grammar), as well as conversational skills. For example, it is fun to learn that the French equivalent of the expression “when pigs fly� is quand les poules auront des dents, which, when literally translated, means “when chickens have teeth�!

Of course, mastering another language requires patience and perseverance; after all, Rome wasn’t built in a day. Fortunately, language classes are specifically designed to allow everyone to learn at their own pace.
