Jack Stott has enjoyed 47 years of pony chuckwagon races Lacombe resident passionate about sport that his family is invested in

C

entral Alberta’s Jack Stott has been around the world of pony chuckwagon racing for a long time.

Now in his 47th year on the circuit, the patriarch of the storied Stott racing team has seen his fair share of wins and losses behind the reins.

“The season hasn’t been that great this year. Not as good as last year, anyways,” said Stott of the 2016 season so far. Normally in the top 10 on the Alberta Professional Chuckwagon and Chariot Association (APCCA) at this time of the year, the Lacombe resident currently sits in 30th place with 194 points.

Stott’s struggles continued last month when he took part in the prestigious Red Deer Motors North American Pony Chuckwagon Championships at Westerner Days.

“Red Deer wasn’t that great of a show for me this year. We’re starting out some new horses.

I had one horse that wouldn’t work properly up there that should have,” said Stott of the show.

Still the season hasn’t been a total loss for the 65-year-old, who posted his first win of the season in TeePee Creek a couple of weeks ago.

“It’s just a re-training program more than anything,” Stott remarked about his current team of horses, who he broke and raised himself.

Despite the difficult road he’s faced so far this year, Stott, who hails from Lacombe, is still having fun doing what he loves to do, driving chucks.

“When you get everything hooked up and get out there then you get your adrenaline rush and then everything’s good,” he said, adding that having the ability to race and travel with his family is also pretty special.

“My kids drive wagons, too and then I’ve got my grandkids driving mini wagons. That pretty well keeps me going now, trying to help them out,” remarked Stott, who has two daughters, one son and a son-in-law, who race pony chucks professionally.

“It’s been a good thing for the kids because none of them have been in trouble yet, touch wood,” he laughed.

Stott was introduced to racing by his father at a young age.

“Back 47 years ago my dad used to drive the Klondike Stage Coach in Edmonton. He drove that for about 10 or 12 years.

And then him and some buddies of his used to drive chariots at the spring rodeo,” he recalled of those early days.

The chariots themselves weren’t anything fancy, just made out of a half a steel barrel with 14-inch tire wheels, but they were still fun to drive, he said.

“That’s how that got started and that’s pretty much how I got started.”

Now Stott gets to share that experience with his own family, something he said is pretty special.

“I ENJOY IT AND I DON’T KNOW WHAT ELSE I WOULD DO.” JACK STOTT “There’s lots of families out there and the kids all gather and they have fun.”

The Stott family extends well beyond the race track, too. In all, the patriarch and his wife, Tidge, raised 10 kids.

In the early days, he said, the family travelled together, although half of the kids were more of the city type.

“My first wife was killed in a car accident and we had five kids. Then I married another lady, a woman who had five. Her kids were more the city type, they didn’t really get involved with the horse thing with us.

But when they were young they all travelled with us. The other ones, well like I say they were born doing it,” he recalled.

Now all of the family that still race chucks travel together, hauling their 22 head of horses all across the province to compete in the sport they love.

“We’ve got two liners that we 31, haul 2016 the horses and the wagons on. Then we’ve got two holiday

trailers,” Stott said, adding that amounts to a lot of quality family time on the road.

“We run probably up to 45 days a year and we’re together about that many days.”

When he’s not on the road, Stott enjoys filling his spare time building chuckwagons.

“I built all of our chuckwagons. I’ve probably built 16 miniature wagons and probably pretty close to 20 of the regular chuckwagons,” he said.

Next up for the Stott family is one of the busiest stretches of the year on the chuckwagon circuit, with four APCCA races and five GMC Taste the Dust Tour races scheduled in August.

But Stott said the hectic lifestyle is all part of the fun.

Former RDC players representing Canada in Rio Canada continues to be superbly represented in the beach volleyball division at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics by a team including Red Deer native Chaim Schalk.

A former Red Deer College Kings player, Schalk, and his teammate, Ben Saxton, have been creating quite a stir since

the 2016 Olympic Games were launched in Rio last week.

“Reluctant at the time, his father now admits the investment paid off as Schalk and partner Saxton ended the 2015 season as the top-ranked Canadian men’s team on the FIVB World Tour.

“The two Albertans teamed up near the end of the 2012 season, in part because both were in favour of spending more time training in California with the top American teams. They won their first tournament together, a NORCECA event in Chula Vista, cementing the partnership.

“Another early highlight was a fifth place finish at the 2013 World Championships in Stare Joblonki, Poland for Canada’s best ever men’s result at the global event, after defeating one of the top teams in the world, Latvia’s and Aleksandrs Samoilovs. Saxton and Schalk went on to reach their first ever FIVB World Tour podium in 2014, claiming bronze at the Parana Open in Argentina.

“They closed the season with a victory at the NORCECA continental championship. Their 2015 season included podium finishes at the Yokohama and Olsztyn Grand Slam events. They reached a Major Series podium for the first time in July 2016, taking bronze in Porec, Croatia.”

Keith Hansen, former Kings Volleyball Head Coach, said in a release that, “(Chaim) was a setter on the Kings team, but he was also an all-around great player.”

According to the release, Schalk grew up playing beach volleyball in his backyard at his family’s acreage near Red Deer, and he decided to officially pursue this side of the game in 2009, making the national team that year.

Meanwhile, Schalk has called his participation at the Olympics a dream come true.

So far this week, the pair have put up a 1-1 record in preliminary round action at Copacabana Beach, notably coming within just two points of upsetting the number-one ranked team of and Samoilovs in their opening match on Sunday night. The pair then went on to defeat Brazilians Pedro Solberg and Evandro Junior in three sets early Tuesday morning.

Meanwhile, the Canadian men’s volleyball team clinched their spot for the Olympics with former Kings player, Gavin Schmitt, who has been an integral piece in the team’s success.

Schmitt and Schalk both agree that their time at RDC helped to shape their lives and their athletic careers.

“Gavin is one of the strongest players on the national team, and he was at RDC during the 2006-07 season – he actually hit the last ball to win the national title during our eight-in-a-row run,” said Hansen.

Schmitt and the Canadians kicked off the men’s tournament off in a big way, Saturday, as they upset the heavily-favoured United States team in straight sets in their opening game. The team played again on Tuesday evening but the game was not over at press time.

Both Schmitt and Schalk are back in action in Rio on Thursday, with Saxon and Schalk getting the day underway with an early-morning match with Cuba starting at 8 a.m.

Dangers of both drunk and ‘drugged’ driving Throughout the year, there is much focus on the dangers of drunk driving but no so much on the potential perils of ‘drugged driving’.

Until now.

Provincial officials are stepping up a campaign to get folks thinking about the dangers of getting behind the wheel while in a drugged state - or worse, with a mix of drugs and alcohol coursing through their systems.

According to the province, few drivers are aware of the penalties for drugged driving and may believe alcohol-impaired drivers are more likely to be stopped by police than drug-impaired drivers.

“It comes as a surprise to many people that drunk driving and drugged driving carry the same criminal charges. This is because both substances impair a driver’s ability and increase the likelihood of being involved in a collision,” said Brian Mason, minister of transportation.

The Traffic Injury Research Foundation determined that in Canada during 2012, drugs were detected in 40% of fatally in-

jured drivers.

Alberta is slightly above the national average at 41%.

This represents 82 drivers who were killed in collisions during 2012 who tested positive for drugs.

For perspective, 71 fatally injured drivers tested positive for alcohol during that same year. Of those, 34 had both alcohol and drugs in their system.

Anything that impairs your ability to drive – alcohol or drugs, whether legal or illegal – may result in an impaired driving charge.

Mixing alcohol and drugs of any sort is also a concern. Combining impairing substances has major risks. Always use substances responsibly.

According to a study done by the Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse, cannabis creates performance deficits in many skills required to drive safely, such as tracking, reaction time, visual function, concentration, short-term memory and divided attention.

Studies of driving performance (both

simulated and on-road) show increased likelihood to swerve, following distance and speed as a function of cannabis use.

Also, many types of illegal and prescription drugs can impair a person’s ability to drive. Such effects can include reduced ability to divide attention, poor time and space management, and reduced ability to allocate concentration. These effects can increase the crash risk by up to eight times.

Such crashes sometimes result in death.

People in general seem to becoming more aware of the issue. In the 2014 Driver Attitude Survey, seven in 10 Albertans agreed that too many people are driving under the influence of legal or illegal drugs.

But that survey also noted only 55% of Albertans make other driving arrangements when they have taken drugs which can affect their ability to drive.

Another area of particular concern is the prevalence of driving after drug use among young drivers.

According to the 2012 Canadian Alcohol and Drug Use Monitoring Survey, 5% of

youth aged 15–24 reported driving after using marijuana during the past year, compared to 9.4% after consuming alcohol.

And data from the National Fatality Database revealed that between 2000 and 2010, marijuana was the most common illicit drug present among fatally injured drivers aged 15 to 24 in Canada.

The 2011 Canadian Alcohol and Drug Use Monitoring Survey revealed that individuals aged 15 to 24 were more likely to be passengers of an individual who had consumed alcohol or other drugs, rather than to drive impaired themselves.

Riding with a driver who has used drugs or alcohol can lead to consequences just as tragic as driving while impaired.

“Impaired driving is Canada’s leading cause of criminal death in Canada,” said Andrew Murie, CEO MADD Canada.

“The number of drugs present in motor vehicle fatalities in Canada (also) continues to grow. It is absolutely essential that when you are using drugs that you not drive and create that risk of death or injury to yourself or others.”

Why you should watch the Rio Olympics Have you heard that the Summer Olympics are happening in Rio de Janeiro right now? Apparently it’s a pretty big deal, at least that’s what the constant ads on CBC have been telling me.

In all seriousness, it would be pretty hard to avoid hearing about the massive international sports meet. Between all of the problems that the Games faced leading up to last Friday’s Opening Ceremonies and the sporting events themselves, Rio 2016 has been dominating the news landscape over the past month and a half; and not necessarily for the right reasons.

I’m not going to sugarcoat things here. Between the Russian doping scandals, fears over the Zika virus, the high levels of pollution in the waters around

CORMIER the city, the state of the Athlete’s Village and the overall political turmoil that Brazil finds itself in, I’d have to say that these Olympics are off to the rockiest start in recent memory.

Don’t get me wrong, there are always issues at the start of every Olympics. In Vancouver in 2010 it was the warm weather that was melting the snow, in London in 2012 there were concerns over security and Sochi 2014 had the LGBT rights protests to worry about.

But something about

these Olympics seems different. Maybe it’s the fact that besides the various scandals and protests that accompany any major event, the Rio Olympics have also faced growing concerns about the safety of their venues, many of which were built specifically for 2016.

I mean, there was a report on Saturday that an Olympic kayaker had capsized after hitting a submerged sofa. Yeah, for real.

And while those reports have so far not been corroborated by anyone and the organizers of the event are currently investigating the claim, you really have to wonder: did anybody on the Olympic committee think that maybe they should do an underwater sweep of their venues to

check for discarded sofas or washing machines before the athletes got out on the water? I don’t know - just a thought.

But despite all of the scandals and issues that have surrounded the roll out of the event in Rio this week, there has been a silver lining: the Games themselves have been pretty good so far.

I mean is there any other event besides the Summer Olympics that an average Canadian sports fan will sit down in front of their TV and watch an entire Beach Volleyball match without thinking about changing the channel once?

That’s what I spent my Sunday night doing, as Red Deer’s Chaim Schalk and his partner, Ben Saxton took on Latvia’s Aleksandrs Samoilovs and (yes I had to

Google those spellings) in preliminary action.

As a qualifier to my next point, I’d like to give a point of comparison. In the past year, I’ve watched and reported on everything from rugby to hockey to golf.

I was there for the Memorial Cup Final between the London Knights and the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies, which ended in overtime. It was incredible.

So believe me when I say that Sunday night’s beach volleyball match was one of the most exciting things that I have seen this year.

Canada lost the final and deciding set by just two points and while it was disappointing, it was heartening to see the Canadian athletes smiling and taking it in stride.

Because they’re at the Olympics and that’s still something special.

By the way, that Latvian team came into the tournament ranked number one in the world, so the local boys did pretty darn well.

The Olympics are a time where sports that don’t generally get a lot of coverage are put into the spotlight on prime time television for the world to see. It’s a time when volleyball players, swimmers, cyclists, archers and other athletes from every sport and every discipline get to showcase their talents and when the world gets to experience sports they don’t often get the chance to see.

I guess what I’m saying is that it doesn’t matter that these Olympics have been somewhat mired in controversy so far. Because they’re still the Olympics and they’re still worth watching. zcormier@reddeerexpress.com

RCMP were called to the G.H. Dawe Centre shortly after 1 p.m. on July 26th, where they located a man who was wanted on several outstanding warrants out of Innisfail. The suspect was taken into custody without incident, at which time RCMP located and seized a number of counterfeit U.S. $20 and $50 bills.

Brett Thomas Lust, 28, of Sylvan Lake has been charged with possession of counterfeit money, two counts of failing to comply with recognizance and possession of controlled substance (methamphetamine).

SHOTS FIRED IN MUSTANG ACRES Red Deer RCMP are investigating an incident from the early morning of Aug. 2nd in which a shot was fired into a home on 59th Ave. in Mustang Acres.

The shot was fired at a front window of the residence at 5 a.m. on Aug. 2nd; it smashed through the window, travelled through the home and exited it again, striking a shed in the yard. The bullet travelled through an occupied bedroom; luckily, no one was injured in this incident and no other damage has been reported at this time.

Police continue to investigate. At this time, they do not believe the gunshot was a random act.

ROBBERY ON CPR BRIDGE Red Deer RCMP are investigating a robbery last month in which the victim was robbed by two men and stabbed in the leg as he walked in the area of the CPR walking bridge.

At 6 a.m. on July 30th, a man was approached by two men on bicycles as he walked home; the suspects stabbed him in the thigh and sprayed him with bear spray before stealing an older Bulova watch with a silver and gold band and a 14 k gold chain. The victim, a 32-year-old Red Deer man, was treated at hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and released.

The first suspect is described as Aboriginal and in his early 30s. He has short hair and has a heavier build. He was wearing a white and black patterned bandana and was riding a yellow and black BMX bicycle.

The second suspect is described as Caucasian and he was wearing a hat and a blue bandana, was skinnier than his companion and riding a white bicycle.

BREAK AND ENTER IN PENHOLD On July 28th at 3:30 a.m. Innisfail RCMP were dispatched to a complaint of a break and enter to a residence in Penhold.

A lone woman was home at the time and reported four males with hoods and masks broke into her home while she was inside. The woman was in bed at the time and the males entered her bedroom. They were unarmed and did not harm her.

The males took the woman’s cell phone and after searching the home they left without incident. The woman managed to run to a neighbour’s home and called police.

RCMP continue to investigate but wish the public to know that this does not appear to be a random incident and the public safety is not at risk.

POLICE SEARCH FOR MISSING WOMAN Police have renewed their plea for public assistance in the case of a missing Central Alberta woman. On July 10th Innisfail RCMP received a report of a missing woman. Angie Beaverbones, 31, was reported missing from her group home in Innisfail and was last seen at 1 a.m. on July 10th. Beaverbones is known to frequent Red Deer and Hobbema. She sometimes also uses the last name of Angie Lightning.

POLICE WARN OF ENMAX SCAM Red Deer RCMP have received a number of reports recently of scammers targeting small businesses and claiming to represent their utility company. In this recent spate of scam attempts, scammers claim to represent Enmax and threaten to shut off the business’s power if they aren’t paid through electronic money transfers. In most cases, a quick call to Enmax by skeptical business owners has revealed the call to be a scam.

It’s common for scammers to contact businesses just before peak business times or weekends, using the time of day to pressure their target into making a hasty decision for fear of losing business activity over the weekend.

‘Pokemon GO’ has Red Deerians on the move

BY KALISHA MENDONSA RED DEER EXPRESS A revitalized video game has taken Red Deer by storm, affecting a huge variety of the population with its intriguing gameplay.

Since the release of the Pokemon GO app, the City has been full of players gathering in droves to collect and battle their Pokemon.

The original Pokemon games were released in the early 1990s and have remained relatively popular through the years. The release of Pokemon GO an interactive app for fans - has blown up globally, with Red Deer being no exception to the craze.

“I got it before it even came out. The first day I got it, I actually went out in my bare feet just to catch a Zubat - which I feel a little silly about because they are everywhere - but it was fun. I’ve had a lot of fun playing it,” said Pokefan Cassie Hall.

“There are days when we get out of the house and go for more than one walk.

We walked past a Pokestop once, and we saw two men sitting in their truck in front of the store who were probably in their fifties, and they were playing it too.”

The game is designed to have players walking around, exploring their neighbourhoods and cities to find new Pokemon, hatch eggs and claim gyms.

Supply spots based on local landmarks - called Poke-Stops - are located around the City, drawing players to certain locations such as Bower Ponds.

According to data from SimilarWeb.com, Pokemon GO is quickly becoming one of the most downloaded and most used apps in North America.

Data suggests that Pokemon GO is closing in on Twitter in terms of downloads and useage.

“I think it’s awesome.

It gets everyone out and walking, which is awesome. It’s getting everyone exercise. I’d probably be inside playing video games right now, instead of out walking around,” said Sean

Hall, a huge fan of the game.

“It’s pretty crazy to see all the age groups that are out playing it, too. I’ve lived in the area around Bower Ponds for quite awhile and hadn’t been down here in a really long time. I got to come down and see what’s new and there are more things that I want to get out and do now.”

In July, Bower Ponds hosted a ‘Pokemon-Go meet up’ event that brought in approximately 1,000 visitors to the area during the day.

At any given time, one can walk the paths by the river and see handfuls of players quietly working on their collections and stats.

Cody Wallace, a local fan of the game, said the energy at Bower Ponds that day was palpable and that the entire area was covered in players.

“There were so many people here that at times you would be shoulder to shoulder with the crowd.

It was insane. There were people on the grass, on the paths - everywhere,” Wallace said.

“It’s gotten people out of the house who I know usually hated going outside and now they’re out walking around almost everyday. That’s great to see.”

The game is so far showing no signs of slowing down in popularity. Players

Fourth annual Pride Week kicks off on Sunday

BY KALISHA MENDONSA RED DEER EXPRESS It’s time for the Fourth Annual Pride Week in Central Alberta, with organizers and supporters all coming together for a week of celebration.

Pride Week, organized by Central Alberta Pride, will officially kick off the events with a City proclamation in City Hall Park on Sunday at noon. The proclamation will include various members of City council, MLAs, Central Alberta Pride members, supportive friends and community members coming together for a free, family event.

Central Alberta Pride has been working for the last year to solidify the plans, and director of events Joel Graham said this year will be the biggest and best Central Alberta has seen yet.

“What I’m most excited about isn’t a specific event - it’s seeing the collaboration of people come together and show their support. It’s not just the LGBTQ community, it’s also a lot about

our supporters and allies. I am beyond excited to experience the love from the community,” Graham said.

He said the Pride society has found many community partners and sponsorships to bring the events to life, including the Golden Circle, the local Royal Canadian Legion branch, TD Bank, the City of Red Deer and several arts, culture and entertainment venues.

Recently, the City of Red Deer painted two rainbows at the intersection of Ross St. and Little Gaetz Ave. to show support for the LGBTQ community ahead of this year’s Pride events. City Manager Craig Curtis was praised by the Central Alberta Pride group for his support and encouragement of the project.

“Our rainbows have been painted on Ross St. at Little Gaetz and those are probably our City’s biggest rainbows this year. It’s been a little bit of a challenge, but it’s a great achievement to have this in our City. After coming downtown and seeing the rainbows, it’s a spectacular, welcoming feeling and means big things for Central Alberta’s LGBT community,” Graham said.

Serge Gingras, co-chair of the Central Alberta Pride Society, has said that he has seen a huge development in relationships within and outside of the local LGBTQ community.

“Pride Week is really for everyone. It’s not all rainbows and parties, but also about celebrating our journey to inclusiveness and embracing people for who they are,” Gingras said.

“The rainbows downtown are not only a big thing for the LGBT community in Red Deer, but for Red Deer as a whole. It’s significant in showing how far we’ve come as a community over several decades, but particularly in the last five years. We’ve come a long way - a really long way.

“The work is never done and Pride Week is just one avenue to celebrate who we are. That celebration is not only in our own LGBTQ community, but in the community as a whole. To me, it’s also a recognition of our history.”

COURT BRIEFS LACOMBE MAN IN COURT A Lacombe man charged with counselling to commit murder made his second court appearance in Red Deer this week.

Robert John Bjorkman, 51, of Lacombe was charged after an investigation of several months.

On April 28th, Red Deer RCMP received information that led them to open an investigation regarding a man suspected of counselling to commit murder.

Red Deer RCMP arrested Bjorkman without incident on July 28th with assistance from Lacombe Police Service.

At press time, it was not known when his next court date would be.

PRELIM SET FOR MAN CHARGED WITH SEX ASSAULT A preliminary hearing has been set for a Red Deer massage therapist who has been charged with sexual assault after a client reported being assaulted during a massage at a private residence on April 27th.

Harold Lasquite Fuentes, 30, faces one Criminal Code charge of sexual assault after RCMP received a report on April 28th that a 23-yearold woman had been sexually assaulted during a massage therapy appointment at a private residence. The victim had no relationship with the accused other than a previous massage appointment at the accused’s place of employment.

RCMP have found no evidence that any criminal behaviour occurred at the accused’s

place of employment and will not be releasing that business name. This is the sole complaint of sexual assault RCMP have received to date with regard to the accused.

A preliminary hearing will take place on Dec. 15th in Red Deer provincial court.

CHARGES UPGRADED FOR SUSPECT Charges were upgraded and added for a Red Deer man who allegedly shot at the downtown police station this past spring.

Cory Daniel Picard, 21, of Red Deer was initially charged with using imitation firearm in the commission of an offence, possession of weapon for dangerous purpose, mischief/damage to property under $5,000 and uttering threats.

The charge of mischief/damage to property under $5,000 was changed to mischief/damage to property over $5,000. As well, a fifth charge was laid against Picard. He has not been charged with reckless discharge of a firearm.

RCMP received the first report at 3:15 p.m. on March 14th that a maroon coloured Ford truck was driving through the Normandeau area and that the occupants were shooting at street signs.

That was followed by a second call at 3:30 p.m. locating the truck in the area of the downtown RCMP detachment. Concurrently, two second-storey windows in the lobby of the downtown RCMP detachment were struck by an unknown type of firearm or replica firearm, resulting in the glass pebbling but not shattering, thanks to its protective coating.

Picard, who has been granted bail, will return to court Sept. 7th.

The pair was arrested in Calgary in June.

On Nov. 18th shortly after 9 p.m. the Red Deer RCMP were called to a disturbance at an establishment located in the Village Mall.

Upon arrival, EMS and RCMP located one person who was suffering with stab wounds.

Beach, 31, of Red Deer was transported to the hospital where he later died.

Both Georgopoulos and Werth returned to court on Aug. 10th.

Daniel Sawyer was previously charged with second degree murder in relation to this incident and has a preliminary hearing that is set to begin on Aug. 26th.

MEN CHARGED WITH MURDER MAKE APPEARANCE Two men charged after the death of a Red Deer man last November made a recent court appearance in Red Deer.

Bill Georgopoulos, 35, and Andrew Werth, 21, are each charged with one count of manslaughter and one count of accessory after the fact to murder in relation to the death of Alan Beach who was stabbed outside of a Red Deer pub on Nov. 18th.

A look at one of Red Deer’s finest athletes Another Summer Olympics is well underway.

Like past Olympics, there are sure to be wonderful performances by outstanding world athletes, amazing victories, crushing defeats and a great deal of controversy.

One tremendous Alberta sports success story involves a team that competed at three different Summer Olympics, won all the games they played and yet were never awarded an Olympic gold medal.

That is the story of the Edmonton Grads women’s basketball team.

The origins of this truly remarkable sports powerhouse go back to the time of the First World War. The provincial championship senior girls’ basketball team from McDougall Commercial High School asked their coach, Percy Page, if he would continue to coach them after graduation.

He agreed. The Commercial Graduates Basketball Club, nicknamed ‘The Grads’, was born.

As a side note, Page had previously been a teacher at the Hillsdown one-room country school, east of Red Deer.

DAWE In 1922, the Edmonton Grads defeated the London Ontario Shamrocks to claim their first Canadian women’s basketball championship.

The next year, the Grads won the Underwood Trophy to become the North American champions. Until they disbanded in 1940, the Grads never ceased to be both the Canadian and American championship team.

In 1924, the Grads played six games during the Paris Olympics.

They won all the games.

Because women’s basketball was not yet considered an Olympic sport, they did not win gold medals.

However, they were designated the world women’s basketball champions by the International Basketball Federation.

In 1928, the Grads played nine games in conjunc-

tion with the Amsterdam Olympics and won every single match.

Again, they were not awarded any Olympic medals, but did win the right to call themselves both the French and World champions because of the European teams they beat.

In 1932, the Grads attended the Los Angeles Olympic Games as spectators. However, no formal women’s basketball games were played.

In 1936, the Grads went to the Berlin Olympics. This time there were women’s basketball games again. The Grads were also allowed to both wear official Canadian team uniforms and sit in the Canadian athletes’ section.

They won all nine of their games. They crushed the team from London, England by a score of 100 to 2.

Because of the outbreak of the Second World War, there were no 1940 Summer Olympics. The Edmonton Grads also decided to disband in 1940.

Over the lifetime of the team (i.e. 1915 to 1940), they won 502 games (400 official contests) and lost only 20. In 1983, all 38 players with the Grads were inducted into

There was one Red Deer player with the Grads.

She was Frances Gordon (later Mills). Frances was born in Red Deer on Jan. 19th, 1915.

After excelling in academics and sports in school in Red Deer, she went to Edmonton to train as a teacher.

She was scouted by Page, and began playing for the Gradettes, the feeder team for the Grads.

She left Edmonton and the Gradettes for a couple of years while she taught in a one-room country school. After returning to Edmonton to attend McDougall Commercial School, she joined the Grads in the spring of 1937.

After a year, Gordon returned to the Gradettes. She continued to play with them until the team disbanded in 1940.

After the end of the Second World War, she returned to Red Deer where

she got a job with the City Utilities office. In 1948, she married Oswin ‘Ozzie’ Mills, who later became the head of the City’s Electric Light and Power Department.

Frances was inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame and the Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School Halls of Fame.

She passed away in Red Deer on April 14th, 2004 at the age of 89. She and Ozzie are survived by two sons, Brian and Gerry, and their families.

Finance Minister discusses Small Brewers Development Grant

BY KALISHA MENDONSA RED DEER EXPRESS Minister of Finance Joe Ceci stopped in Red Deer recently to visit a local brewery that will benefit from the new Small Brewers Development Grant aimed to grow the small businesses.

The announcement of the development grant followed legislation that changed the mark-up rate for all beers in the province - now at $1.25, regardless of the origin of the beer.

Ceci said this mark-up was a way to “level the playing field” and allow for all beer producers to pay the same price to sell their beer in the province.

“There are two parts to what’s going on: the first part was the mark-up, where we ensured that every beer that comes into the province is paying the same.

“The second part is the Small Brewers Development grant, which helps people like Charlie (owner of Troubled Monk) and other breweries throughout Alberta who are producing great, world-class quality beer to grow their business, hire more people and develop our economy in a diversified manner,” said Ceci.

“We’re too narrowly focused on the oil and gas sector production and if that falls off because of world prices, we are challenged in this province to ensure revenues are still coming in and ensure business revenues remain high. They are not high right now, so diversifying our economy is critical.”

Ceci said the province has received some criticism towards the mark-up - notably from Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall - but that the price was still lower than many other provinces and it was a way to clarify the prices for beer developers.

“We absolutely believe we are trade compliant with this new $1.25 markup. The same kinds of things go on in other provinces across the country, we are just a little slow in this process. We’re going to catch up, and we’re going to ensure that Alberta companies and jobs are first in our consideration, just like they are in Brad Wall’s consideration.”

The mark-up is expected to generate approximately $36 million in revenue for the province, and the Small Brewers Development Grant has set aside $20 million for business developments.

Ceci said that remaining $15 million - $16 million will head to the province’s general revenues fund to be used primarily for infrastructure projects.

“Everyone knows we’re in a challenging economy in Alberta right now. We need to ensure that people are put back to work, and more Albertans are working in a diversified economy going forward so that

we can derive greater revenue from those companies and from those corporate and personal income taxes. We want people working and companies to thrive - that’s where our focus is.

“I think this grant program is exactly what is needed at this point in time to stimulate our economy and encourage young entrepreneurs to build their businesses,” Ceci added.

He said he was excited

to be in Red Deer exploring one of the many small breweries in the province that are helping to diversify the economy, stimulate job growth and put Albertans back to work.

CONSTRUCTION ON DISCOVERY CANYON BEGINS

Red Deer Regional Health Foundation scholarships are a tremendous way to contribute to recruiting, retaining and encouraging high-quality, trained professionals, and a crucial step in maintaining a world-class healthcare system, officials say.

In 2015, $29,500 in scholarships was awarded to ambitious students, and this year, with additional donors, the Foundation expects to exceed that success.

Scholarships apply to a wide variety of educational pursuits, including cardiology, respiratory health medicine, hospice palliative care, nursing, pediatrics and more.

A new scholarship this year is the Front Line Leadership Education Fund. This scholarship(s) will be awarded to an out-of-scope manager(s) who is currently employed by the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre and is pursuing continuing education in the field of health administration, or who has an opportunity to attend a conference that is directly related to his/her field of clinical accountability.

The scholarship applications are open through to Sept. 15th.

The demolition and construction process for Discovery Canyon was set to begin last week.

Discovery Canyon, located in the River Bend Golf and Recreation Area, is one of Red Deer’s most popular outdoor water features. The area closed for the 2016 season in order to complete extensive renovations to modernize, improve site safety and enhance the seasonal water park.

Re-opening in 2017, the water feature will see repair and renovation to the stream bed, improved access and accessibility and expanded beach and playground areas.

River Bend Golf and Recreation Area will remain open to the public throughout construction, which will continue into the fall. Visitors are reminded to obey posted signage and remain a safe distance away from the area during the construction.

The economies of Medicine Hat and Red Deer are set to contract this year, while the outlook for Lethbridge and Brandon is more favourable, according to the Conference Board of Canada’s latest MidSized Cities Outlook.

“The oil price slump continues to weigh heavily on the economies of Red Deer and Medicine Hat, with both cities on track to see total output shrink for the second consecutive year,” said Alan Arcand, associate director, Centre for Municipal Studies, The Conference Board of Canada.

Red Deer’s economy is forecast to shrink for the second straight year, as a 2.1% decline in 2015 is followed by a 0.8% contraction in 2016. Fortunately, a recovery is in the cards for 2017, officials say.

Continued weakness in the energy sector will not only prompt another decline in primary and utilities output, but it will also indirectly impact other sectors of the City’s economy.

Leal is a talented actor, director and assistant artistic director for Tree House Youth Theatre.

Leal graduated from Red Deer College’s Theatre Performance and Creation program in 2013.

However, she volunteered with Central Alberta Theatre in 2008 doing makeup and hair.

In 2010, she took a New York five week intensive acting for film workshop.

Since 2013, she worked as the director for Butt Ugly Anti-Tobacco Program for Teens

Red Deer Public Schools launches instrument drive

BY KALISHA MENDONSA RED DEER EXPRESS It’s the perfect time to get rid of old band instruments and donate them to the worthy cause of students in the Red Deer Public School District.

The Foundation for Red Deer Public Schools is asking the community to bring out gently used instruments to donate to students who otherwise might not be able to access music education.

“Traditionally, students either purchase or rent instruments. For some families, due to financial need, they simply aren’t able to provide instruments for their children,” said Bruce Buruma, executive director of the Foundation for Red Deer Public Schools.

“We want to have a bank of instruments available across the district for children. If they have an interest in musical education, we don’t want financial need being a barrier for them to access it.”

Buruma said this collection is about helping students reach their potential through music education.

“We don’t want individual, personal or social circum-

stances to affect a student’s potential. Music provides tremendous potential for many students and we want to make sure they can access all the possibilities and potential that go along with music education.”

“Studies have indicated that music also helps im-

prove math abilities, cognitive abilities and kinesthetic abilities that are absolutely essential as well. Music education has a lot of meaning outside of simply appreciating the music - it provides a skill, but also benefits that reach far beyond the class.”

He said the drive was initiated to address the need of instruments for new band programs, particularly for G.H.Dawe school and Normandeau. He added that the district was introducing an ‘Introduction to Band’ program at Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School (LTCHS) this fall.

All instruments collected from the drive process will go to various schools throughout the district, available for when students need them.

“We want students across the district to benefit from this, not just those targeted schools. However, it is mostly students from the middle school and high school levels that will benefit from this particular initiative,” Buruma said.

“We want to do this as a concentrated effort before kids go back to school. We’re going to be continuing to raise the program through-

out the summer, but as kids get back into school, we hope to continue raising awareness of the importance of getting instruments into the schools.

“We’re hoping some summer cleaning was done and people have discovered some of their old instruments that could do a lot of good in the hands of some kids, particularly kids inspired to pursue music.”

He said they hope to get a variety of instruments to

allow students the choice that best suits them.

Buruma expressed his thanks to Red Deer Emergency Services for opening up all fire hall locations in the City as donation centres.

As well, instruments can be dropped off at the Red Deer Public Schools District (RDPSD) office.

He said that 53rd Street Music will be assisting in the appraisal of instruments to provide charita-

ble tax receipts to donors.

Instruments will be repaired and maintained to get them in top shape for students.

During the musical instrument drive, the Foundation hopes to collect more than 50 instruments, as well as donations to help pay for repairs.

Montair Aviation, a flight training academy based in Pitt Meadows, B.C., has officially opened their second training base at Red Deer Airport. Earlier this year, Montair announced that after a review of several airports in Western Canada they had selected Red Deer to expand their training facilities and operations. Since that time, Montair has been preparing to welcome 80 air cadet students into Red Deer by the end of the year.

The new training base includes approximately 24,000 sq. ft. of aircraft hangar and main office space plus an accommodation building, kitchen and dining area that can accommodate approximately 80 students. These structures are all part of the Harvard Business Park lands which have been left underutilized since the departure of the DND Cadet program in 2014.

“Montair is extremely excited to now be operational at our new base in Red Deer. This facility will be the focal point of expansion for our company as it is in an ideal location to handle the growth plans we have. We are looking forward to working collaboratively with the Red Deer Airport, local community and all levels of government to further expand our training capabilities over the coming years,” said Ian Kennedy, Montair’s chief operating officer.

Currently, there are 30 students based at the Red Deer facility who began train-

ing on July 18th. Montair is expecting 30 more students to arrive into Red Deer by mid-August, with a total of 80 students to arrive by the end of the year. Primarily, these students are from the Civil Aviation Flight University of China (CAFUC), and within 12 months will graduate from Montair’s training program with an integrated Airline Transport Pilot Licence.

They will then return to China for additional conversion training on commercial jet aircraft.

“We are pleased to see that Montair is now fully operational and has begun training at their new base here in Red Deer. With the addition of Montair, the airport is quickly becoming a hub for specialized flight training in the region.

We look forward to working with Montair in the future and support their expansion plans at the Red Deer location which will create additional employment opportunities for Central Albertans,” said RJ Steenstra, CEO of the Red Deer Airport.

There are six Cessna 172 aircraft that are used for training at the Red Deer facility, with plans to double that number by the end of the year. Montair also has a state-of-the-art Alsim 200 multi-crew flight simulator that was recently delivered from France. Montair currently employs 15 staff at the Red Deer location with plans to add 15 more employees over the next 12 months.

BY MARK WEBER RED DEER EXPRESS Treehouse TV’s Splash’N Boots of The Big Yellow Boot are including Red Deer on their fall tour.

They perform at the Memorial Centre Sept. 22th. Splash ‘N Boots features the talented duo of Nick Adams and Taes Leavitt.

The three-time Juno nominees are hitting the road with their brand new live show ‘The Big Yellow Boot Tour’, performing in more than 30 Canadian cities along the way.

They’re latest CD, Songs from the Boot, was released in 2015.

For the first time ever, Splash’N Boots will also be bringing their Big Yellow Boot friends on tour with them - Charlie, Keys and Jumping Jack Granny as well.

In addition, one dollar of each ticket sale of The Big Yellow Boot Tour will go towards Splash’N Boots 4 Kids- A Foundation dedicated to bringing musical opportunities to Canadian children and families in need.

“It started as a university project,” explains Adams during a recent chat of the duo’s beginnings. “Our assignment was to create a children’s play. So instead of doing a play, we actually wrote some songs.”

These tunes promptly resonated strongly with audiences that originally heard them. “So from that, we said, ‘Oh, let’s make a CD’. We did it on a shoestring budget, and we then started doing birthdays and performing at libraries - that kind of thing. We got paid $50 here and there, and thought that was the coolest thing,” he added with a laugh.

“We loved it so much, and couldn’t believe that people were paying us to hear our songs.”

But it eventually came to be a full time gig and the gifted duo has never looked back. “Every year, we look at each and say, ‘Are we still Splash ‘N Boots because we still can’t believe this is happening’,” added a clearly delighted Adams. ”We don’t take it for granted for a second.”

Their first disc was released back in the early 2000s. And its been a constant churning out of fresh, bright and fun materials since.

“When we aren’t touring, we are constantly writing and recording,” he said.

“We’ve just started a new album right now, so there will probably be a new one in the fall.”

As to the name of the duo, they had first thought of ‘Nick and Taes’. But with the unusual spelling of Taes, they opted for something big and bold. “It was just the idea of kids, and it being rainy, and puddles and how good it all sounds together,” he chuckles. “We just liked the name and it stuck.”

Meanwhile, the pair appears daily in more than 8.3 million homes across the country on their hit TV show, The Big Yellow Boot. “Love and happiness are such huge components of Splash ‘N Boots -

and it’s the shared feelings that happen during our show, too.”

Building a positive self-esteem and sense of positivity in general are also persistent themes as well as the melodies move along. As to the concerts, Adams said the duo pours everything they have into the shows - and are indeed mindful of every moment in terms of making them as fun as possible.

Often, they don’t even go into a show with a set list - a given show will go according to a particular crowd.

“We read the crowd, and between the two of us we engage them on a really heightened level,” he said.

And having done many shows in Canada’s north, they are excited about how ‘Splash’N Boots 4 Kids’ (focusing on its four core values - love, happiness, inclusion and connection) can help create sustainable, long-term musical programming, as well as hands on opportunities for kids to build confidence, get creative and have fun.

“We’re so excited to be taking this brand new show across Canada and, in doing so, help bring more music to families in northern communities,” says Leavitt. “We believe strongly in the power of music to inspire and bring people together, and feel that concerts and musical programming should be accessible to everyone.”

Splash’N Boots encourage families to come to The Big Yellow Boot Tour wearing their best yellow and blue outfits, and get ready to sing and dance and have a hilarious and unforgettable time with their families.

“We put the same passion and energy into a crowd of two kids that we put into a crowd of 1,000. We’re committed to it and we love it, so I think that’s infectious and that people want to be a part of it.

“Often I look into the crowd, and I’ll watch parents watching their kids dancing for maybe the first time. And that really hits home to me. Parents say, ‘My kid is so shy’, and then they can’t believe it because their kids are in the front row that’s the best! We hear parents who say, ‘I had no idea my child loved music so much - thank you’.

“That kind of stuff is just the best - that connection. That we somehow are going to be a part of these children’s lives growing up,” he said. “That’s pretty cool for us.”

Shake the Lake returns after two year hiatus

“We decided we need to bring Shake the Lake back because we saw the other festivals shutting down,” Organizer Edward McIntyre said.

“We really wanted to have something that the whole family can come to without stressing their finances.”

The event, which is free of charge, features some of the same events as it did in its previous seven iterations, however on top of music and BMX competitions, this year will also feature a new event for the area, Art Battle.

“I am a graphic designer by trade and I have been doing it a very long time, so we have been always trying to get art into the festival,” McIntyre said. “I was at a couple design conferences and saw this battle format that we will be doing. It looks amazing and it looks like a really good fit to bring it in.”

The Art Battle gives artists a standard tool kit and theme that is given to them the second the competition starts. They then have an hour to complete a work of art to be judged on a 6 ft. by 8 ft. canvas.

McIntyre added, “Every different style is welcome and will be judged on an even playing field.”

On top of this exciting new addition,

Shake the Lake will bring in new up and coming musical acts, according to McIntyre – including The New Electric, which has two members who have previ-

ously played at this event in the past.

“We pride ourselves on finding the up and coming musical acts,” McIntyre said.

“There are lots of people who have played our event in the past that have went on to win Group of the Year at the Juno Awards.”

Saturday will also feature BMX action which will include X-Games level participants competing. At Shake the Lake two years ago, more than 1,500 spectators came to watch this event because of the high calibre of the athletes competing, explained McIntyre.

The event, according to McIntyre, is still looking for sponsorships to help put it on.

Although he said their large sponsors, such as Red Bull, have stepped up, “In a big way,” many of their local sponsors have had to back out due to the struggling Alberta economy.

“We are still in a position where we do need sponsor dollars to come in,” he said.

“We are a registered charity so we can offer tax receipts.”

A Musical Evening with The Singing Hills will be held on Oct. 22nd at Victory Church (98 Oberlin Ave.)

Doors open at 6 p.m. with the concert beginning at 7 p.m. Hors d’oeurves and a silent auction will take place before the concert.

Hillman has been involved with people in the community of Mandeville, Jamaica for more than a decade and continues to make a positive impact on the community.

“We are involved with a ministry in Jamaica called Generations Church and

the community called Mandeville,” he said.

“When you get down into Jamaica there are no food banks as such as we know, no soup kitchens, there is nothing there and what we’re doing is offering a hand up for these people to get them back on the ground.”

There are a number of initiatives Hillman and his team help out with.

“We are involved in a children’s home called New Home Children’s Home. The lady that runs it has 30 children under the age of five - some are handicapped, some are abandoned - there’s a lot of interesting things happening,” said Hillman. “We are

also involved with a home for mentally challenged men. There are 19 of them there at the moment.

“We started a sewing centre down there. One of our girls one year decided to bring a sewing machine down there and there is a young girl there now making her own clothes. From that one sewing machine we now have four sewing machines and two sergers and one industrial sewing machine. We often take sewing material and sewing items down so she can make money with what she is doing.

“We are involved in a hand up in the community - we do not give a hand out.

Everything is long term. We

want to make sure it is sustainable.”

There are many other initiatives Hillman helps out with as well.

As to the concert, Hillman encourages the community to come and enjoy the evening.

“We will also be bringing awareness to our ministry,” he said. “We want to make people aware of what we’re involved in. We want people to be aware that there is an opportunity to invest in this community (Mandeville) and 100 per cent of net proceeds will go towards our cause.

Answers to ‘why’ on the path to health and fitness It’s broken Daddy, I need a new one.

We have a four-year-old and this sort of thing happens a fair bit as we try to teach him the value of things, and that the bank machine isn’t magic and unlimited.

When something breaks, he either asks for a new one, or just asks me to fix it.

Some things cannot be fixed. “Why?” comes the immediate reply, and no matter what I say, the next question is always,”Why?” If you are a parent, you know this. Of course we are trying to not only teach him to value his stuff, but to realize that if you take care of it, you will have it forever.

Sadly, I meet lots of people (that are way past four years old), that come to us looking to be ‘fixed’.

It’s what we do ultimately, (help people) but some things cannot be fixed, only worked around. Some things could have been prevented. Most things actually.

I really love that my son asks me ‘why’ 100 times a day. If you ever sit in on one of my staff meetings, coaching sessions, or lectures, you will notice I do this constantly with adults too.

‘Why’ is more important than ‘how’ because when the reason ‘why’ to do something is important enough, then the details of ‘how’ don’t matter. You will find a way.

Look, eating well is harder than eating whatever you feel like that is handy and cheap.

Exercising regularly is harder than relaxing and enjoying TV or a video game.

Remembering to take a good multi-vitamin every morning and night is harder than not bothering to care.

Until you consider the big question that applies to everything important - ‘why?’

Why eat well every day, with a good balance of macronutrients and real, whole foods?

Because your life will be better in every way.

You will have more energy, sleep better, poop better, recover faster, get sick less, get really sick less (and hopefully never but that isn’t guaranteed).

Why eat better? Because the marketing system of food companies does not care about your health at all, they care about profit margins, so you HAVE to care about your food.

You have to make a conscious choice to improve it.

Why exercise every day, balancing cardio and strength or resistance training?

Unexpected outcomes of joint surgery It’s been said that, “All would be well if there were no buts.”

Unfortunately, life is full of “buts”.

A prime example is joint surgery. Today, an increasing number of people are being relieved of chronic pain by hip and knee replacements.

Others are being helped by lesser laparoscopic procedures. But patients should be aware that these are major operations sometimes associated with unintended consequences.

For instance, several years ago, Dr. Justin de Beer, an orthopedic surgeon at the Henderson site of Hamilton Health Services in Hamilton, Ontario, reported this unexpected finding. A worrying number of patients after hip and knee replacements had suffered heart attacks following the operation.

JONES within three to five days of the replacement. Equally important, 29% of these patients had no previous history of cardiac disease.

To obtain this information, Dr. de Beer and his colleagues analyzed 3,471 hip and knee replacements performed at their hospital from 1998 to 2003. They found that 63 patients had suffered a heart attack and seven patients died.

Another study showed a 12% rate of silent heart attacks after surgery for non-cardiac conditions.

Moreover 60% of these patients experienced an-

other major cardiac problem within the next six months.

Several other studies, one published by the Canadian Medical Association Journal in 2006, showed a significant downside to elective surgical procedures.

In this study, 1.4% of patients over 50 years of age suffered major cardiac problems when they were not having surgery on their heart. Of these patients who had a heart attack, 25% died, and for those who had a cardiac arrest during surgery, 65% died.

Looking at the problem from a worldwide standpoint the figures are more shocking.

Of the 100 million operations done for non-cardiac reasons, 900,000 patients died from heart attack, suffered a non-fatal coronary or had a non-fatal cardiac arrest during the surgery!

But why are patients de-

veloping heart problems during surgery?

Remember, these patients having hip and knee replacements are not kids.

One study showed that patients at greatest risk for a heart attack, even a silent one, are over the age of 50, suffering from diabetes, or have both a knee and hip replacement done at the same time.

The blunt fact is that it’s impossible to provide new joints without placing the body under extreme stress.

Moreover, the trauma of the surgery triggers a host of physiological changes that increases the risk of a fatal blood clot.

But what about the risk of what’s often referred to as keyhole surgery that is much less traumatic? These procedures can also greatly improve quality of life.

But a report in The Risk Management Magazine pub-

lished by the Canadian Medical Protective Association shows even these lesser operations can be associated with significant risks.

For example, some were left with either temporary or permanent impairment that resulted in significant loss of function. Some patients complained of foot drop, a change in the length of their leg or continued persistent pain.

Others suffered from infection, blood clots in the leg, lungs or stroke.

Still others had the sciatic nerve injured. A few surgeons operated on the wrong leg! And 7% in this study died.

So never forget this Gifford-Jones Law. If a joint is partially broken and causing only minor discomfort, think twice or a few times before agreeing to surgery.

Surgery is best done only

when joint pain is having a major effect on one’s quality of life.

Also, be an informed patient.

Some patients complained they had not been advised of all possible complications.

So be certain to have a discussion about side-effects before the procedure. And also have the surgeon place his initials on the affected joint to avoid wrong-sided surgery.

You must also accept the fact that if you’re obese, have diabetes, hypertension or other medical problems, you always face a greater risk of complications.

And that even under the best of conditions, no surgeon can ever guarantee there is no chance of complications. There will always be ‘buts’ in surgery.

The event will be closed for judging from 10 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. on Aug. 18th, and open to the public from 2 - 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 18th.

It’s free to enter the show and there are prizes to be won by local businesses as well.

There is also a junior section for the younger crowd of 14 years of age and under, and a Garden Tea Party from 2 to 4 p.m.

Admission to the show is free, and there will be an awards presentation at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 18th as well.

Local growers shouldn’t be shy about entering the show – sometimes folks can find treasures in their own yards that deserve to be a part of the popular annual event, explained Clarice Schulz, the event’s convener.

Meanwhile, for locals with a green thumb, both educational and social opportunities abound via the Red Deer & District Garden Club. The Club, whose origins stretch back to the early years of the last century, is still going strong.

Founded during the spring of 1911, the Club was originally known as the Red Deer Horticultural Society.

Today, the Red Deer & District Garden Club is a non-profit organization and is a member of the Alberta Horticultural Association.

Their intent is to foster an interest in all

types of gardening and provide a forum for gardeners to get together and celebrate the love of gardening.

Meanwhile, members meet once per month from September through June (December excluded) on the third Thursday of each month. Meetings are held at the Kerry Wood Nature Center and usually begin at 7 p.m.

The yearly fee for membership is $20 per household which is payable each September.

According to the web site, membership includes newsletters outlining upcoming events, gardening advice and submissions from club members, free attendance at the monthly meetings - guest speakers with various garden topics, gardening knowledge and tips, an annual pot-luck dinner in March, the perennial plant sale in May, the summer garden tours of local yards in July and August, the flower and garden show, a members-only plant exchange in September and a festive pot-luck and gift exchange in November.

Regular meetings typically include a presentation from a local expert on various garden related topics.

And as pointed out, things don’t come to a grinding halt during the colder months.

Members meet all year to share tips, stories and they continue to enjoy special speakers and sessions to hone their skills.

Red Deer Minor Hockey player learns from the best

BY ZACHARY CORMIER RED DEER EXPRESS A young Red Deer hockey player had the opportunity of a lifetime last month as she had the chance to travel across the country to meet and learn from her all-time favourite hockey player.

“It was a dream come true,” said 10-year-old Malia Tetreault, who just recently returned from a trip to Nova Scotia where she attended the prestigious Sidney Crosby Hockey School.

The school, which takes place in Crosby’s home town of Cole Harbour, only accepts 160 kids out of 5,000 applications every year, and the lucky few who are selected are given a truly special experience.

“He was on the ice everyday with the kids. He would be there in the morning or in the afternoon, but he was on the ice everyday. He had 10 other assistant coaches out there with them, so the kids had tons of training,” said Malia’s mother Bridget of Crosby, who is a two-time Stanley Cup champion and is the captain of the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins. Crosby also won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP after the Penguins triumphed over the San Jose Sharks in the Stanley Cup Final last season.

In addition to the on-ice instruction, participants also had the opportunity to have a oneon-one meeting with Crosby for a photo and to have something signed.

It was the experience of a lifetime for Malia, who is an avid Penguins fan and considers Crosby her hero.

“He’s probably the best player in the NHL,” she said, adding that when the time came for her to meet the superstar, she was really excited.

“I was kind of nervous and happy. I got to meet my hero.”

“She gained skating skills, she learned respect for the sport.

That’s one of the big things that Sidney likes to teach the kids.

And being a good leader. I think it was just an overall well-run hockey camp,” Bridget said.

“He kept the kids busy from eight until four every day.”

And the once-in-a-lifetime experiences didn’t stop there for the young Red Deerian.

There’s a tradition in the NHL in which every member of any team who wins the Stanley Cup gets to spend 24 hours with the famous silver trophy in the city of their choice over the summer following their win.

Bridget said the initial decision to apply for the camp stemmed from Malia’s passion for the game, and for the Penguins in particular.

“She’s just such a huge fan of Sidney Crosby. She follows him and everything, so she saw advertisements for his hockey school. So I thought just a shot in the wind, I thought, oh well we’ll apply. She may not get accepted because there were 5,000 applicants, but I thought whatever at least we can say we tried.

“But she was lucky enough to be accepted, which was absolutely amazing,” Bridget said.

The trip also allowed the youngster to experience the east coast’s unique culture, as the family decided to tour around the Maritime provinces after the conclusion of the camp.

“We went to P.E.I., New Brunswick and Cape Breton,” said Malia, adding that even with all of the cool places she saw, Cole Harbour is still one of the most special.

“It was beautiful and pretty cool because I’m in his home town.”

Now Malia said she’s looking forward to hitting the ice for the upcoming hockey season to apply what she learned from the two-time Olympic Gold Medallist.

“I’m pretty excited.”

Renegades take stock of a standout spring

BY ZACHARY CORMIER RED DEER EXPRESS It has been another successful outdoor soccer season for the Red Deer City Soccer Association and the Red Deer Renegades competitive youth soccer teams.

With the 2016 outdoor soccer season in the rear view mirror, the Renegades are taking stock of a spring that included several standout stories.

“We’ve had quite a good season. As far as the outdoor season’s concerned, we brought on a couple of new players and it’s been going quite well,” said Shane Samson, head coach of the Renegades U12 Boy’s Tier I team, who were one of the standouts in the local competitive soccer program.

The young squad finished in the middle of the pack in their 13-team league, which was a big deal for a team who was competing at a Tier I level despite only having competed in Tier III during the indoor season last year.

“My hope for the kids when we made the decision to take them up to this group was that we could be competitive in about 70 per cent of our soccer matches.

I didn’t have a whole bunch of high expectations when it came to win-loss. But the kids really worked hard,” said Samson of his team, who finished the season in seventh in their league.

Samson said his squad really brought a work ethic to the outdoor season this year, which paid off in the standings.

“We trained three times a week, we attended six different tournaments as well as all

our league play and the kids stepped up and performed far better than anticipated. We were competitive in 100 per cent of our games and the kids performed very, very well for the entire season.”

It’s that kind of work ethic, Samson said, that is at the centre of the development program that the RDCSA and Red Deer Renegades have in place.

“I think as coaches we offer the players opportunities and the athletes, it’s up to them if they want to take us up on the opportunities. I think that this group is finding the success that they find because the majority of them are willing to take us up on those opportunities.”

The vast improvement of the team as a whole is a promising sign of things to come for the young players, who, for the most part, will be able to stay together as a team heading into the new U13 age category for the indoor soccer season this year.

“The aspiration is to keep as many of the players together as we possibly can and we’re always on the look-out for new acquisitions to the team.

“There is room for a few more players. So moving forward the aspiration is to continue to work hard, train hard, and be competitive. And always looking to achieve a new standard for ourselves,” Samson said, adding that the team is also focused on individual development.

“We still are very much focused in on the developmental of the individual athlete. Yes we are trying to coordinate the individuals into a team setting, but the primary focus is still on the

On the other side of the development scale, the Renegades U14 Girl’s Tier II team are gearing up to head to provincials this weekend.

“In my best case scenario I’m hoping we get a medal. They really seem to pull together in tournaments for some reason, which is great to see in some aspects. But I think realistically if the kids walk away knowing that the girls put out 100 per

cent effort knowing that they did the best they could, that will make them happy and that will make me happy as a coach,” said Head Coach Moira Duley of her team, who have won medals in every tournament they entered this season.

“There’s always room for improvement but I think overall it’s been pretty successful for them.”

Of course, as the outdoor soccer season draws to a close, the focus now shifts to preparing for the fast-approaching indoor season.

“We have tryouts coming up

at the end of the month. We also have some additional training that will be free of charge coming up towards the end of the month, which will be before tryouts,” said Samson, adding that the Renegades are always looking for new players.

Bucs enter the AFL 2016 playoffs On Aug. 6th, the Central Alberta Buccaneers geared up for their final game of the regular 2016 season.

While they had already secured the number one spot in the AFL (and in the nation, overall), they were determined to come out with a victory; doing so meant that the Bucs were undefeated (a first in franchise history).

They kicked off against the Edmonton Raiders (who had secured fifth place in the standings).

The pirate crew got off the boat quickly – their defense shut down all Raider attempts at moving the ball, their special teams set a nasty tone, and their offense was as surgical as ever.

New Buccaneer Vince Roth said, “I think we played a well-rounded game on all sides of the ball. We executed well

throughout the entire game.”

The Bucs drew first blood with a 68 yard punt return

by Josh Blanchard. Central Alberta’s offense quickly followed this with a flurry of touchdowns.

They ended the first half of the game 63-0.

“We definitely need to work on discipline and avoiding penalties,” said Roth.

“There were way too many flags thrown in that game.”

The Raiders were able to drive down field late in the fourth, resulting in their only score of the night.

That offensive drive was shut down by Buccaneer defense several times, but was prolonged thanks to penalties. Ty Page, a first-year Buc, said, “Unnecessary penalties take away our momentum. In a different game, this could result in

an outcome where we don’t come out on top.”

The final score on the night was 77-8.

Now that the regular season is over, the Bucs enter the AFL 2016 playoffs.

Since they finished in the first seed, they earned a quarter-finals bye and will have an opportunity to rest and heal.

In semi-finals (hosted in Lacombe on Aug. 20th at 4 p.m.) they will play the lowest-seeded team to survive the first round. If they make it past semi-finals, the Bucs will host the AFL Championship (Aug. 27th at 6 p.m.)

And if they are the Alberta Football League Champions, they earn the right to host the NFC champions from Ontario (Sept. 10th at 7 p.m.)

Regarding playoffs, Bucveteran Mark Fay said, “It’s the first time in franchise

history that we are 8-0 on the season, and that’s awesome, but now the real work begins. We have one goal and that’s a championship.”

The Bucs continued their partnership with the Whisker Rescue on Saturday as well.

The fundraiser to win ‘Romance Galore with #24’ continued and saw many people enter the draw.

The winner of the draw will be announced at halftime during the semi-finals game (Aug. 20th); the winner not only gets to go on a date with #24 Ryan Miller, but receives numerous additional prizes as well.

Proceeds go to the Whisker Rescue (an organization dedicated to rescuing stray cats in Central Alberta).

Updating a home in challenging ‘selling’ times I have been working on a house doing a redesign for a client who has a unique situation.

This client is working on a home which has dropped considerably in price due to the housing market but he needs to sell and it is in dire need of a makeover.

The property is a modest bungalow in a mediocre area of town and his concern is that even with improvements, he won’t get the dollars out of his home that he requires.

Initially, I advised him that if he could hold on for a few years then the market would have improved and he would be in a position of more equity and selling might be easier. As he is relocating for work, it is his first choice to sell unless he can find good renters for the next few years; after searching the rental market he is deciding on selling so that puts me into action for a redecorating plan before I list his property.

WYSE Renovations are delicate when you are dealing with limited amounts of equity and a crippled selling market.

It is easy to over develop a home in hopes of it selling for top dollar and the sad truth is that even the most sparkly home may not sell for the amount of money you have put into the renovation.

I proposed a plan for him to make the most out of his renovation needs which will help the home sell quickly based on its curb appeal and its interior finishes.

First plan of attack is for my client to do as much of the work himself, especially in the tear out/demolition phase as it will

save him money.

We are going forward with a basic plan to freshen up the flooring, paint walls and ceilings and upgrade countertops and tile in the kitchens and bathrooms. When my client takes on the tasks of flooring and tile removal and paints the rooms himself, this will provide a large cost savings for his project.

The items which sell a home are the kitchen and bathrooms and his house has an unfortunate shade of orange oak cabinets and blue countertops which date the house and will make a potential buyer back out the door quickly!

We are hiring a refinishing contractor to paint the cabinets a creamy white and then ordering new countertops which will co-ordinate with the vinyl plank flooring being installed.

Once a new backsplash is installed (my client might tackle that himself), the house

will have a new lease on life and my client will have refreshed the home for thousands less than a traditional renovation.

We also tackled a few items in the home like light fixtures and hardware which we changed from brass to pewter with a careful application of metal paint.

The dated fireplace front is now jet black instead of brass thanks to a coat of bbq paint. Heat resistant and durable!

These few touches are going to absolutely update this home and I feel like we have tackled this beast of a renovation for a very reasonable amount of money.

Every home is different and each project will have various items that tell its age. My job is to evaluate and advise my clients where to apply the wrinkle cream to obscure the visual age of their property.
