Story and photos by Kristen Douglas You can just barely see the top of Anne Young’s head over the stack of binders she’s carrying as she performs a master juggling act while walking down her stairs.

Once she reaches the kitchen, she spreads the binders across the counter and begins to flip through the pages and pages of movie posters she’s compiled over the years.

The posters are keepsakes from all of the shows that Young has directed since coming to Campbell River in 1957 as a teenager.

has quite the history in Campbell River’s arts culture.

These days, she’s best known for her twice yearly Antics Dinner Theatre, which as the name suggests, involves a live show and sit-down dinner.

Her renditions of Fawlty Towers have been a fall staple at the Willow Point Hall for years, with a different play each year filling in the spring slot. This year it was Love is in the Air, last year was Our Town.

But one thing audiences can always count on is to see familiar faces.

“I have a troupe, but I don’t have auditions. I never have because we’re just like a huge family because we do this a couple of times every year,” Young says, adding that she does on occasion recruit people who are new to the theatre.

“Sometimes they’re nervous but we all help each other out until we’re all comfortable. I won’t throw you out to the wolves.”

Each show is roughly a three month process that begins with her troupe sitting around Young’s dining room table for a first read-through of the script. Roles are then doled out and the

performers are sent home to rehearse their lines. As the show nears, the group transitions to rehearsals in Young’s garage.

“They’re all very good sports,” Young says. “We put two (space) heaters out there because it gets chilly in the winter. They’re all really good sports rehearsing in there.”

The method seems to be effective. Antics Theatre has been going strong since its inception in 2001. Young says she was motivated to put on such shows by her “darling” 97-year-old friend Lorna Pennock.

“You should see her act,” says Young of Pennock, who still performs. Pennock discussed the idea of dinner theatre with Young over supper several years ago. Growing up in Saskatchewan, Pennock saw the dinner theatre concept in action as a fundraiser in small-town Creelman, Sask.

“I decided I would do a show where people can have meals and it kind of took off from there,” Young says.

“They really are popular,” Young admits modestly. “For me, I feel really complimented but it’s a combination. I think I have really good taste in actors because they do such a good job and the audience really looks forward to seeing them.”

The success Young has hit upon with Antics Theatre has partially filled a void still evident within her. As she gets talking about her ‘kids’, she lets out a sigh.

For 19 years Young’s focus and passion was her Young Theatre – an acting program for Campbell River children and teens. Campbell River’s Malcolm Masters and Michael Stevantoni, two up-and-comers who have both found success in acting and film, were at one time a part of the Young Theatre program. Young says she was “blessed” to have a friend who would help write scripts for the children’s plays.

“I really enjoyed doing my children’s theatre,” says Young who had to abandon the program in 2012 as her

performers grew up and the parents and children had other responsibilities.

“If I’m being really honest, I still miss doing the kids theatre,” Young says. “I miss seeing their growth and I would have parents tell me the program helped their children with their reading skills and their confidence.”

Her kids mean so much to her that at the end of each school year, she flips through the grad supplement, finds her former students’ photos and mails them to her now-grown students, along with a congratulatory card.

Young revived her youth theatre concept momentarily in the mid-2000s, putting on a couple of dinner theatre events.

“I thought kids should go to things too and have a dinner and a show,” Young says.

Most recently, in 2013, Young did a dinner theatre production of If the Shoe Fits, a take-off of Cinderella, and she got the youth involved in last year’s production of Our Town which had a mix of adult and youth performers.

Young says she’s fortunate the Campbell River community has been so supportive and has allowed her to follow her passion.

Young began acting in elementary school, at the former Elm Street School on Dogwood Street, and continued with drama through high school at Carihi where she was a part of the school’s first ever grad class. Young went on to volunteer with amateur theatre groups like River City Players.

Young says she loves acting but directing has kept her so busy that acting gigs are few and far between.

“I love acting because you get to be somebody else,” Young says. “It’s kind of fun getting to portray other characters.”

She managed to sneak in a small role for herself in a two-person play last spring, Dinner for One, but she’s since put back on her director’s hat – a role she says is both rewarding and stressful at the same time.

“Directing is a challenge,” Young says.

“When it works, the audience will laugh at it, or they’ll be quiet if it’s an emotional scene.”

Either way, Young is happy to have the audience there, enjoying themselves and watching her actors as they pour their heart and soul into each and every performance, with Young guiding them on.

After many years away from the Island, Jackie Hildering returned to visit friends in 1999. They arranged for her to go on a whale watching tour and while on board she realized she was no longer the kind of educator that she wanted to be.

“On the deck of that boat, it was just an enormous shake up,” she said. “I just wanted to get back and be the kind of biology teacher that was themselves, connected to nature.”

Upon returning to her job as the deputy head of the International School of Rotterdam, in the Netherlands, she couldn’t shake that feeling. So, Hildering moved back, hoping to get a job on that very same whale watching boat. She did and she’s never looked back.

“It was the best move I ever made,” she said. “This niche opened up because of my background in international education, my annoying skills as a teacher, my curiosity, my bossiness - all those things.”

Hildering calls herself The Marine Detective. Though more of a teacher than a detective, she hopes the title portrays a sense of humility as well as ongoing learning.

The association brought together the existing marine research and education projects in the area and provides a platform to create new projects.

At the moment in MERS, Hildering is doing humpback whale research.

According to the website, the project consists of creating and sustaining a photo identification catalogue of the humpback whales in the area around NE Vancouver Island as well as researching threats to the population.

Humpback whales are one of the many marine animals living in the cold, dark northeastern Pacific Ocean, a place that many, wrongly believe, doesn’t sustain much life.

“The waters are so dark because they’re an incredible thick soup of life that can sustain giants like killer whales, humpback whales and Steller sea lions,” Hildering said.

Because of this misconception about life under the surface, Hildering believes that her underwater photography is the most valuable thing that she does. She learned to dive just after she got the job working on the whale watching boat all those years ago. She hopes that her photos open up the ocean so that people better understand their connection with it.

“There’s something, as I roll off a boat and submerge myself, that is complete escape,” she said. “It is a learning experience, it is humility. I feel more relaxed than when I am on the surface. I gain my motivation and inspiration from the ocean.”

As well as doing research through MERS, Hildering works as a marine naturalist, educating a wide variety of audiences and raising awareness about preserving the ocean and the life within it.

Her focus is on the ocean because it so often testifies to environmental problems first. “Species within it are often indicators,” she said, providing the examples of bioaccumulation of toxins in killer whales and the potential influence of climate change on Sea Star Wasting Syndrome.

So what can we do to help?

According to Hildering, it all boils down to using less, exercising precaution and knowing your connection to the environment.

chemicals,” Hildering said. “Another, is to have an understanding of our connectedness and reliance on the marine environment as the life-sustaining force on earth.”

where sea lions have their babies. It is testament to how quickly our value systems can change that such acts would never be tolerated now. But, we still have a long way to go.

In other words what we do, what we consume and what we throw away has an impact on the ocean upon which life depends.

“Those who have the power now, which is the consumer-based oil and gas paradigm, they want us actually to continue in the same way,” she said.

Hildering believes that one of the major setbacks to making much needed changes is the bipolarity of environmentalism. “Too many of us seem to think that it is an either / or situation where there are only two extreme options, to consume without restraint or to have to be “perfect” when it comes to sustainability” she said. She emphasized how it is ridiculous to think along the lines of being either a resource user or an environmentalist.

Hildering is trying to combat the paralysis that appears to come from such thinking by spreading the word that there are common solutions to environmental problems and that there is a wide spectrum of actions whereby we can reduce our ecological footprints and, so often, increase our quality of life.

“We don’t need to go into a state of eco-anxiety,” she said.

Hildering focuses on reducing energy use, choosing durable products that don’t have to be replaced as often, using biodegradable chemicals and avoiding plastics.

To combat this we have to realize that our values are being shaped by these forces, that it benefits those who have power in this paradigm to keep the general public fearful and continuing on in the same way. Hildering believes we can bring about change by shifting our values, understanding our place in nature and embracing our ingenuity.

Working to this end, Hildering can be found on the ocean or under the surface, photographing the life that she finds there. She said she spends at least 45 minutes a week underwater. The epicentre of her work is Telegraph Cove because the strong currents sustain so much life. It is the one part of the world that she knows really, really well.

People often ask her if she has visited the Great Barrier Reef, she hasn’t, she figures there are enough people advocating to save warmer oceans. “[It is] the mystery and fragility in our dark waters that need more voices,” she said.

At the end of the day she advocates for a shift away from the consumer paradigm and she is confident that we will be successful.

Though that epiphany on the whale watching boat in 1999 is still her most remarkable experience, Hildering has seen many amazing things since becoming The Marine Detective.

For her, those are the happiest places on earth and she thinks of them as the interface of the marine world, where the air and the ocean meet.

Though Hildering has a degree in animal science and a teaching degree in biology, when it comes to environmental education she is self “in the trenches” taught.

When teaching, whether it be on a boat or in a classroom, Hildering focuses on the beauty of the environment, the resilience of nature and our connection to it.

“I absolutely know that I am doing what I could best be doing with my life,” she said.

As well as MERS Hildering worked as an education coordinator for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, the communications director for the SOS Marine

Conservation Foundation and the community liaison for the ’Namgis First Nation’s KUTERRA land-based salmon farm.

Story by Mike Davies | Photos courtesy Mount Washington The chairlifts at Mount Washington – known for taking skiers and snowboarders up the side of the mountain to enjoy some of the best winter conditions anywhere in North America – will be spinning this summer taking bikes and riders up to enjoy the fruits of Mike Manara and his team’s recent hard work.

Manara is the resort’s Snow School Director in the winter, but he is also in charge of the mountain’s Mountain Biking Operations – responsible for the design, construction and rebuild of the mountain biking trail system on the mountain – and he is very much looking forward to showing it off to the riding public after a three-year hiatus of their mountain biking program.

“The decision to reintroduce the Bike Park wasn’t taken lightly,” says Don Sharpe, director of business operations at the resort. “Our new owners are committed to a successful long-term plan for summer development, so they wanted to make sure that whatever we did was sustainable. We have all been working on bringing mountain biking back to Mount Washington since last November.”

And back it will be. Manara and his team have been researching, repairing and building for months now, traveling to some of the best downhill facilities in North America for ideas and advice.

Manara was recently afforded the chance to spend three days riding in Park City, Utah, for example, at one of only five International Mountain Biking Association (IMBA) Gold Level facilities in the world.

“When you go to a place like that with such a variety of topquality riding, you can’t help but be inspired to bring back great ideas we can use here,” Manara says.

And while he was down there, he met with Charlie Sturgis, head of the Mountain Trails Foundation, and discussed their trail network and how they achieved such a world-class park. But that’s typical for Manara. He’s always talking to people about bike parks, intent on making Mt. Washington’s the best it can be.

“By spending time with industry partners,” Manara says, “we have been working on best practices with our connections at Whistler Bike Park and Silverstar to absorb knowledge from the top parks in the industry.”

And that’s what he wants to make Mount Washington.

It’ll help that there’s money being put into the project.

Mount Washington is planning for an estimated $250,000 to be invested in the park this summer with ongoing enhancements coming every year thereafter.

The first phase – of three – of the bike park rebuild was focused on the park entrance at the Hawk Chair. The team started that section with a series of berms that Manara says “will be fun for every skill level.”

Additionally, Manara says, the mountain’s easiest trail, “Green Line,” (also Vancouver Island’s longest uninterrupted mountain bike descent, according to Mount Washington), has also been reworked, as has the more demanding “Back in Black.”

Phase two of the rebuild will entail connecting a number of the old trails into one new line to create the park’s first intermediate run, called “Hot Wheels.”

addressed, along with a rebuild of the park’s scenic 10 km cross-country bike loop, “The Finger Trail,” which can be ridden from the base area without taking a chairlift.

It’s not like they don’t know what the park needs.

Manara and his crew are all avid riders themselves, and have many, many years of experience doing exactly this.

Manara himself was one of the founding members of the United Riders of Cumberland in the Comox Valley and has served for many years as their president.

He was instrumental in the negotiations to get a land use agreement with private landowners to develop the Cumberland trail system. He has served as the Vancouver Island representative for the Mountain Bike Tourism Association and is a past recipient of the Lars Fossberg Award – an annual award presented by the Canada West Ski Areas Association to a young manager of a ski area who shows a high degree of creativity along with the ability to improvise.

And he has formed a team of trail builders that he feels would rival any other.

Bill McLane from Nanaimo, for example, worked on the trails for the mountain biking film Builder and helped build the original “Monster Mile” trail on Mount Washington, one of the mountain’s signature runs.

Mario Fehrenberg and Scott Stansbury have come along with Manara from the Cumberland club system, joining Jerry Baker from Courtenay and Tony Radomi, who has been with the resort for over 15 years and was, in fact, the original builder of the venerable “Back in Black” run.

Supporting Special Olympics

The support Campbell River provides Special Olympics athletes opens them to a world of fun, fitness, camaraderie and travel and the benefits those things afford.

The biggest method of supporting Special Olympics in Campbell River is through support of the annual Howie Meeker Special Olympics Golf Classic which will be held August 20 at Storey Creek Golf Course. The event is the local chapter of Special Olympics’ most important fundraiser. Without this event, Special Olympics doesn’t happen in Campbell River and that means a lot of individuals with special needs lose the benefits gained from participating in sports.

“It’s just so amazing,” said Terri Cranton, cochair of the golf classic organizing committee.

“Just to think they can go and just be like everybody.”

Campbell River Special Olympics supports 130 athletes in more than 16 programs. It pays for the travel to competitions near and far.

Athletes compete locally against community organizations that support the various sports.

For example, Campbell River firefighters come to provide competition for Special Olympics soccer and basketball, giving the athletes the experience that only competing provides.

This prepares them to compete against other Special Olympics athletes in regional, provincial, national and even international competitions. Last year Campbell River Special Olympian Michelle Forberg was part of the first-ever Canadian basketball team to compete at a Special Olympics World Games. She and her team qualified through their gold-medal performance at the Special Olympics Canada 2014 Summer Games in Vancouver.

Snowshoer Hazen Meade travelled to Newfoundland in March to compete in the Special Olympics National Winter Games. He has also travelled to Seoul, South Korea in 2013 to compete in the Special Olympics World Winter Games.

Campbell River Special Olympians are particularly fortunate because the local chapter is a proactive organization that is among the best in the province, if not the country, in delivering athletic programs.

Even a desperation attempt to recruit a player or two from the Toronto Maple Leafs, the franchise Meeker helped win four Stanley Cups and later coached, left him empty-handed.

The local organization and the local volunteers of the Howie Meeker Golf Classic make it happen. They have to, said Cranton, the mother of a Special Olympian.

“It just doesn’t happen otherwise,” she said. “It’s just not the way of the world.

Sometimes you have got to make it happen.”

The results are overwhelmingly positive, which helps keep volunteers and families of athletes going.

“It’s just a very worthwhile place to be,” Cranton said. “It’s very rewarding.”

This year will be th 28th annual Howie Meeker Special Olympics Golf Classic. And it’s been associated with former NHL All-Star and Hall of Fame broadcaster, Howie Meeker, that whole time.

Now in his 90s, Meeker has surpassed a quarter century of involvement with the tournament.

The job was initially supposed to go to someone else.

“The fellas that started the golf classic had a special meeting,” Meeker, 92, told Campbell River Mirror reporter J.R. Rardon. “I was invited to it,

But Meeker, who was then announcing Vancouver Canucks games for BCTV, was unable to recruit any of the Canucks, who claimed “they were all busy in August.”

“About then, somebody came up with the idea we call it the Howie Meeker Classic. They got to the bottom of the barrel and were left with Howie Meeker,” he said with a cackle familiar to viewers of his broadcasts on BCTV and, before that, on Hockey Night in Canada.

It is a decision neither Meeker nor classic organizers have regretted. For the classic’s first 10 years, he and his wife Grace traveled each year to Campbell River, where he greeted each player and took a tee shot for each foursome at Storey Creek’s signature 17th hole.

After he lost Grace to cancer he remarried, and now brings his second wife, Leah.

“It’s something we’ve always looked forward to,” Meeker said. “And it’s been an honour coming back every year.

The event itself if really fun, and it’s for one of the best reasons in the world.

“If you’ve got a dollar you want to put on something, Special Olympics is as good as it gets.”

Despite his age and failing vigor — Meeker is the last surviving member of the Maple Leafs’ 1947 Stanley Cup-winning team — he will remain a part of the classic as long as he can make the trip up from Parksville.

He will always have a special place in his heart for the “original” Howie Meeker Classic and the athletes it was created to benefit.

ORIGINS

The Special Olympics movement was founded in 1968 by Eunice Kennedy Shriver and has grown to include nearly 4.5 million athletes in 229 accredited programs in 170 countries, including Canada.

The first Special Olympics competition was held in Chicago in 1968 and included athletes from 26 U.S. states and from Canada.

On June 9, 1969, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada’s first Special Olympics national competition was held, less than one year after the sport movement was born on Chicago’s Soldier Field. It attracted 1,400 individuals with an intellectual disability from towns and cities across the country to compete in athletics, aquatics, and floor hockey.

Canadian broadcast legend, Harry “Red” Foster, an advertising executive and philanthropist, was inspired by what he had seen in Chicago, Illinois, in 1968. Foster caught the vision and worked tirelessly to bring the sport movement to this country.

For more than 40 years, Special Olympics Canada has delivered one message to Canadians: people with an intellectual disability can and will succeed in life if given the opportunity.

Special Olympics Canada’s website says, “The roots of the movement go back to the early 1960s, when a group of students at Beverley School, an inner-city school in Toronto, Ontario, became the test group for Dr. Frank Hayden, a sport scientist at the University of Toronto. Dr. Hayden was studying the effects of regular exercise on the fitness levels of children with an intellectual disability.

“Dr. Hayden’s research was nothing short of groundbreaking. It challenged the prevailing mindset of the day – one that claimed that it was the disability itself that prevented them from fully participating in play and recreation. Through rigorous scientific method, Dr. Hayden proved that it was simply the lack of opportunity to participate that caused their fitness levels to suffer. Given the opportunity, people with an intellectual disability could acquire the necessary skills to participate in sport, and become physically fit. Sport could have a transformative effect on the lives of those with an intellectual disability.”

ways, but He more than made up for it in a lot of others,” Meeker said. “I’ve been there 27 years and it’s all first-name basis. I’ve watched some of them grow up and some of them turn gray.

“But there comes a time when it’s payback time, and if there’s something I can do to help out, I’m glad to do it. I can’t do enough for ‘em.”

Many individuals and businesses in town agree with Meeker as they throw their support behind the event.

“We have amazing major sponsors,” Cranton said.

This year, Broadstreet Properties has come on as a major sponsor of the event.

Other sponsors include Cermaq, Bailey Western Star, Wacor, realtors Amy Ross and Paul Axon, the Campbell River Mirror, 2day FM, Hub International, Marine Harvest, Grieg Seafood, Thrifty Foods and Sure Copy.

And it all leads to great success. Last year’s tournament raised $38,000.

“That was a good year,” Cranton said.

“We were very happy.”

The money goes a long way to allowing Campbell River Special Olympics to focus on delivering programs rather than ongoing fundraising. It also allows the local organization to keep the cost down to the athletes.

“That’s why we fundraise, it keeps the costs down for the athletes,” Cranton said.

Campbell River’s athletes pay the least to participate of any Special Olympics athletes on Vancouver Island.

“And we take them to way more stuff.

They travel further they experience more than other locals because of this funding,” Cranton said. “Our athletes and our people really do benefit from it. That’s who benefits from it. It stays local none of it goes to any other cost except our athletes.”

The program is run completely by volunteers. The golf classic committee has 10 volunteers and all the coaches for the programs are volunteers as well – more than 30.

The golf classic starts with a Texas Scramble at 10 a.m. They play and there is food and prizes and a hole-inone tournament. Rides are provided to the Thunderbird Hall where a dinner, awards and silent auction is provided (with rides home provided as well).

The athletes serve as caddies for every team of golfers during the tournament and then they attend the dinner and auction.

All the fun happens on Aug. 20 at Storey Creek Golf Course and supporting this event goes a long way towards making Special Olympics happen in Campbell River.

Barb Zant started working at Home Brew Factory & Wine Boutique on Dogwood Street almost 20 years ago.

She didn’t know anything about wine – other than that she loved it. Her experience, at the time, with “homemade wine,” like that of many others, wasn’t great. But she found out she loved the product they were producing at the shop and loved the people and process of making it so much that she bought the entire operation when it came up for sale eight years into her tenure there.

And 11 years later, she’s never been happier with that decision.

“It was a no brainer,” she says with a laugh.

“I purchased it because I loved the product, and the company that makes the wine kits, Winexpert, are the leaders in the industry and they treat their people really well.”

And apparently, Campbell River is a wine town. Zant says she has never been busier.

So what does the process entail? Someone just walks in and says, “Make me wine, please,” and

then come back when it’s ready?

Well, not exactly, Zant says. But it’s not that complicated – for the customer, at least.

The process starts with a relatively in-depth consultation.

“People just come into the store and we talk about what they need,” Zant says simply.

But what if they don’t actually know what they need?

“Maybe they just know they had a bottle somewhere that they really liked, and they want something like that,” Zant says.

“So we have to start by figuring out what they liked about it, for example. Are you a dry white person? Are you a blush/rosé kind of person? Do you like light, medium-bodied or heavy reds?

That’s what we have to figure out first.”

And she’s good at it.

“Almost 100 per cent of the time, I end up helping them pick the perfect wine,” she says with a smile. “People are never disappointed. In 19 years I’ve replaced two kits, and both times it was because something was wrong with the kit, not

because the recommendation was off.”

Once they settle on an option together, Zant says, the process of making the wine and getting it home to their wine rack is actually super simple.

At least it is from the customer’s perspective. There’s a lot going on behind the scenes.

You kind of leave everything up to them.

Well, not everything. Legally, Zant says, they are not allowed to “make” the wine, so the customer has to add the yeast to the kit to start the fermentation

process, which takes about eight days. At that point, staff checks the wine’s specific gravity – a measure of residual sugar left behind after fermentation.

When the specific gravity of the wine reaches the proper number on the hydrometer, the wine is transferred to another container (called a carboy) for the fermentation process to finish before her staff stabilizes the wine.

This involves the addition of potassium sorbate to stop the yeast from fermenting and potassium

metabisulphite to keep the colour and flavour of the wine while removing excess oxygen.

Then a gelatine is added to make any residual impurities fall to the bottom of the wine so they don’t end up in the bottle.

At that point, the wine can move to the back room to be filtered and aged for four to eight weeks, depending on the kit that was chosen.

“Four-week kits are made from concentrate, six-week kits are made from juice and eightweek kits are made from juice and grape skins,” Zant explains, “and they produce very different results. None are necessarily better or worse than others, though, because good wine is just a matter of personal taste.”

Also in that back room are sinks for customers to wash their bottles – also available in-store for those who don’t have any – bottling machines, and a genuine Italian bottle corker.

Once the wine is ready to go home, the customer is called to make an appointment, comes in with their bottles, fills them, corks them, adds labels and shrink-wrapped tops (if they want to make the bottles fancy) and heads home with their wine.

At that point, the wine is done and ready to consume.

Well, technically it is, anyway. Wine changes as it rests, and most wines need to be aged before they have matured into what they “should” taste like.

But the amount of aging a wine requires, like the variety being chosen, is another matter of personal preference, Zant says.

“I recommend that people don’t touch it for two weeks. Let it calm down and rest and have your first bottle after a couple of months, but some people like to drink their wine right away because they like young wine and some people say their wine wasn’t any good until it aged for a couple of years.”

But most people, Zant says, “trunkage” their wine. “They age it for as long as it takes them to get it home.

I would say, maybe five per cent of people age their wine for the time it’s supposed to be aged for.”

It’s not wrong to do that…but they would probably find their wine ends up being better if they did, Zant says.

So is Campbell River more of a red or a white town? “I definitely make a lot more red in this town than I do white,” Zant says.

“We’re making a lot of Malbecs these days.

Argentinian and Chilean full-bodied stuff is really popular right now.

“And I totally get that,” she says with yet another laugh. She’s all about the heavy-bodied reds, herself. She says she only has white in the

“They actually should have started it in January,” Zant smiles. “But it’ll still be good for the holidays if they start it now.”

After that, store your wine on its side in order to keep the cork moist.

Store your wine in a cool, dark place.
