Kimberley native Jared du Toit became a household name across Canada this weekend while competing in his first PGA event at the RBC Canadian Open in Oakville, Ont.
Du Toit finishes top-10 at RBC Canadian Open Charges laid in Kimberley native soars in PGA debut while competing alongside the world’s best golfers TAYLOR ROCC A Sports Editor
Jared du Toit may not have won the 2016 RBC Canadian Open on Sunday afternoon, but he lifted his nation, ignited his hometown of Kimberley and signalled those in the PGA world of what’s to come when he eventually turns pro. The 21-year-old product of the Kimberley Golf Club sent chills down the spines of golf fans across the country this past weekend at Glen Abbey Golf Club in Oakville, Ont., as
he ran with world’s best en route to a top-10 finish at the RBC Canadian Open. It was the first PGA Tour appearance of du Toit’s young career, an opportunity afforded him after receiving a tournament exemption from Golf Canada. Entering play with no expectations, everything that followed was nothing short of a fairytale as Canada’s top-ranked men’s amateur swung his way to a score of 9-under — just three strokes back of Venezuela’s Jho-
nattan Vegas, who took the title at 12-under — at the conclusion of the tournament. “If you would have told me a week ago that the week would have went like this, I would have called you a liar and said, ‘In your dreams,’” du Toit said over the phone Monday. “I really did get to live out my dream this week. Hopefully it’s the start of something big.” Oozing energy from start to finish, du Toit drained monstrous putts, knocked down incredible recovery shots,
crushed colossal drives and electrified golf fans everywhere with his upstart, fun-loving yet focused performance. Those in the bleachers off the 18th green greeted him with roaring applause and standing ovations. Fans back home in Kimberley sent their warmest regards and cheered in the bars, restaurants and clubhouses. It’s a story that’s only just begun for one of golf’s brightest rising stars.
