Rotary Lighthouse Park opens on Canada Day An ‘iconic’ symbol of Sylvan Lake is returned TODD COLIN VAUGHAN, SYLVAN LAKE NEWS The shores of Sylvan Lake are a little brighter.

On Friday, July 1 – Mayor Sean McIntyre, along with many officials from the Town

of Sylvan Lake and the Sylvan Lake Rotary Club, cut the ribbon to official open Rotary Lighthouse park.

The lighthouse project according to a speech by Mayor McIntyre was a project spearheaded by the Rotary Club, under the leadership of Trevor Sigfusson.

Rotary Club President Jim MacSween was one of the distiguished guests at the opening of PHOTO BY TODD COLIN VAUGHAN the Rotary Lighthouse Park.

Sigfusson, since 2013, lead the project through multiple public consultations and fundraiser’s – eventually leading the grand opening on Canada Day 2016.

Jim MacSween, President of the Rotary Club, said that the “old lighthouse had outlived its usefulness” and he knew that the plan to open the new lighthouse would coincide with Canada’s 149th birthday. “That was the plan and it was a bit of a scramble to have it all ready,” he said. “The lighthouse had been ready for quite some time, but the lighting and the park needed a real push to get done.

“I tip my hat to the town because it looks really good today.”

The Rotary club raised over $240,000 for the lighthouse project, after the old lighthouse, originally built on private property, was deemed unrepairable.

Over the years the lighthouse had taken up the mantle of being the symbol of Sylvan Lake so disposing of the old lighthouse and then not replacing it didn’t seem like a viable option,” MacSween said.

This lead to the Rotary club seeing an opportunity to have the people of Sylvan Lake be a part of the new lighthouse, which would continue being the symbol of the town. The Rotary Club ended up selling paving stones with the names of the community members, businesses

and deceased citizens that people wanted to honour in order to fundraise for the new lighthouse. This way, the names of this community would continue to be a part of Rotary Lighthouse Park.

The park and its walkway leading up the lighthouse are on public property and free for all to enjoy.

“There is still an opportunity for the people who see the stones leading up the lighthouse to purchase a stone and have their name on the walkway,” MacSween said.

According to Mayor McIntyre, “the goal of the lighthouse committee was to build an attractive, solid structure that would stand the test of time.”

He added that since the project was part of Sylvan Lake’s centennial celebrations, he hopes that the new solid lighthouse would still be in place for Sylvan Lake’s 200th anniversary.

“It was a monumental effort by the Rotary Club and the friends of the Rotary Club,” McIntyre said. “They have built and returned to Sylvan Lake an iconic symbol of our community.

It’s pretty easy to be down on ourselves…..I’m pretty much a self deprecating ninja most days - calling myself out on my flaws often before anyone could or would notice. Trouble is I think, the world seems to support it in the news, on social media etc, talking about the worst of people, and being so judgemental.

I remember being a kid when Baby Jessica fell into a well while playing on her farm. The whole world rallied together to pray and help that little girl and her family. I never heard a thing about blaming the parents. Then most recently a few tragedies happened involving kids - one at a zoo, a river, and one by a body of water in Florida. There was so much backlash against the parents. As if they were at fault or to be blamed.

As the father of a four-yearold, I can tell you that potentially dangerous things happen in the blink of an eye when an innocent young child tries something without realizing the consequences. Compassion and a little kindness is required for those parents.

So to create a success avalanche, start making a list of everything in your life that is awesome! Buy a simple paper journal, or even use an app for your phone like “Success Journal” and write out three successes from each day as a minimum before bed each night. If you have 10, great, write 10. Share them on Facebook if you want – and create momentum with your friends!

What if you don’t have any successes in a day? I doubt it.

Brushed your teeth, ate some food, went to work, looked for a job, found a penny, etc. Nobody says the successes have to be massive or earth changing…… they just have to be a success.

Once you get into this habit… you will become a success magnet – because there is a universal proven fact, that what you track: you get more of.

Just like the people that gather around and gossip and blame and hate, they get more of that.

So let’s be the ones that gather around and talk about success… and get more of that!

CAROLINE VANDRIEL I have a very dangerous job… at least to someone like me. I am a Librarian and I am surrounded by books.

I enjoy reading - the irony is that I have access to so much, with very little time to read.

Part of my job is to purchase new books for the library. You’d think that would be the fun part, but at times it is agony. Do I choose the latest western because there are so few on the market but have a niche readership?

Do I bring in more of “bodice-ripper” books, or ones with shirtless Scotsmen on the covers or buy those for our ebook collection? As I’m ordering, I request items for myself from the library catalogue. But as I place large orders, I end up requesting many items - and they all arrive at the Library at the same time. Often I will have books piled high on my home’s entry table, night stand and side table. (I learned from experience not to put them on the coffee table - it’s horribly embarrassing to have to tell another library that my dog ate their book.)

And the piles grow and grow until I’m overwhelmed by books and don’t know

where to start, so I renew them the three times then bring them back, unread (gasp).

There used to be a lot of guilt associated with this.

My parents were born during the Depression and The Second World War. This meant we always cleaned our plates, we never took more than we needed, and we never, ever, left anything undone. I was convinced that once you had a book, you were obligated to read it from start to finish.

Then one of my English professors asked how many of us read novels from beginning to end, even the ones we didn’t like. My hand shot up with the seemingly obviousness answer, but around me at least one third of the class had not raised their hand!

That’s when I discovered the freedom of not reading books I don’t like or don’t immediately capture my attention.

Periodically I seem to choose books with similarities. Recently I picked up The Nest by Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney. It opens with a party, dialogue, and descriptions that immediately call to mind The Great Gatsby. It was jarring to discover that the book is actually set in the present. Also jarring was that

none of the main characters are likeable.

Dropping that, I picked up A Fine Imitation

by Amber Brock. The narrative switches from pre First World War to the early 1920s.

The characters are more likeable and the story constantly refers to a scandal from the past. Intriguing, but not really what I was hungering for.

The third novel I picked up I stuck with: Girl Waits With Gun by Amy Stewart is also set at the onset of the Great War. The novel is based on a real person, Constance Kopp, the first female deputy in America, and her sisters. The sisters are awkward and winsome, ethereal and solid. They feel very human. The title was taken from a newspaper headline, and many details come from news articles and trial transcripts. The book opens with a bang – a car and buggy crash.

The sisters bring charges against the driver of the car but are met with abuse, violence, and threats. I mentally urged them on, eagerly awaiting the sordid details as their past began to unfold.

The sequel, Lady Cop Makes Trouble, comes out in September this year. It’s already on my list of books to read.

If you want to live your life a quarter mile at a time, then Sylvan Lake Customs and Classics has an event for you.

On Saturday, July 9 – this local group will be hosting their 10th annual Show and Shine at Meadowlands Golf Club. The event will, luckily, take place right on the grass of the course to avoid the heat of the summer.

Gord Bredo, who started this event 10 years ago with his wife Elaine, is a huge fan of the venue, “We found that venue a few years ago and it has been really good,” he said. “We get along great with them and it has been a great fit.”

He added that shows that are on asphalt soak in the heat and stores it, whereas the grass is “nice, cool and not as dusty” “Everyone loves being on the grass and that is a huge plus for us,” he said.

To celebrate the 10th anniversary, Bredo and his crew have introduced many new prizes including a $500 cash reward from ReMax – that is eligible to anyone who pays the $15 dollar fee to show their vehicle. The event will also have new hand-made piston trophies to commemorate the event, which will be handed out to the 10 winners.

According to Bredo, any vehicle “that someone takes pride in” is eligible to participate in the show.

“You will see everything from your grandpa’s Model A, to a souped up Model A that will do a quarter mile in 10 seconds,” Bredo said.

He added that many people think they can’t participate because their vehicle is up to a certain quality, however once they arrive at the show “with a lawn chair” they will be “parked next to a guy who has the same story as them.

The event will also have a breakfast and lunch, which will be supplied by the Knights of Columbus – with proceeds going to the Knight’s charitable works. The Show and Shine have also hired a professional face painter free of cost for the kids, but Bredo added that the painter will also paint the adults faces who would like that.

Bredo encourages “anyone with a vehicle they have pride in – any classic of some sort – to throw out their lawn chair, come on out and have have fun.”

Anniversaries. Aren’t they wonderful?!

Our beautiful country just celebrated her 149th Birthday with festivities in most every community across our land, from the largest cities to the smallest hamlets! Most people were out taking in the entertainment, the parades and the food. This land is our home. We love it and it is only right that we celebrate its inception and its freedoms.

We all have things to celebrate in our own lives as well: birthdays, wedding anniversaries, graduations from university and high school, and other accomplishments.

On June 29, for instance, I just celebrated my 20th anniversary of my ordination to the priesthood in the Anglican Church of Canada. That was a very momentous occasion in my life. It changed me in many, many ways, and I give thanks to Almighty God for calling me to ordained ministry.

When God first called me, I couldn’t believe it, but I told Him I would do anything He asked of me, and here I am!

149th Canadian Birthday The day officially began at 11 a.m. with the opening of Rotary Lighthouse Park, where Town officials and Rotary Club members presented the new and improved lighthouse, which is now on public property meaning any and all are able to enjoy the beautiful new park.

Mayor Sean McIntyre said in a speech that the Rotary Club has “built and returned an iconic symbol of our community,” and that he believes it will be around “when Sylvan Lake celebrates its 200th anniversary.”

Following the introduction of the lighthouse, Lakers had the opportunity to take the short walk down to the pier – where the Rotary Club had bouncy castles, food venues, face painters and professional massage booths set up for everyone to take part. p

President Jim MacSween of the Rotary Club said that “Canada Day has taken a greater significance and the Rotary Club is happy to honour it.”

He added that he was happy too see all the visitors, immigrants and new Canadians being welcomed in Sylvan Lake for the occasion.

At 2 p.m., people gathered at the Town Municipal building where members of the Royal Canadian Legion and the RCMP gathered as a colour party to raise the Canadian Flag to the singing of “O’Canada.” It was truly a treat for those present to witness Legion Members in full garb honour the country that they sacrificed so much for.

The raising of the flag was followed by the March of Canadians – where Canadians marched and paraded down Centennial Avenue alongside the colour guard and the Innisfail Pipe and In Drum Band towards D the th pier.

Recreation Parks, within Section 9.16, Recreation Facility District (RF), be amended as follows:

Public Notice TOWN OF SYLVAN LAKE NOTICE OF A PUBLIC HEARING REGARDING PROPOSED BYLAW NO. 1715/2016 Being a Bylaw to amend the Land Use Bylaw No. 1695/2015.

WHEREAS it is deemed necessary and expedient to amend Bylaw No. 1695/2015 in the manner hereinafter appearing: NOW THEREFORE, the Council of the Town of Sylvan Lake, in the Province of Alberta, duly assembled and under the powers conferred upon it by the Municipal Government Act, RSA 2000, Chapter M-26, and amendments there to, enacts as follows: 1. THAT Section 2.2.1, Definitions, be amended by: a. removing the definition for “bareland condominium recreation parks” and replacing with the following: “bareland condominium recreation parks” means a condominium plan comprised of bareland units as defined in the Condominium Property Act having the purpose of accommodating recreation vehicles and park model recreation units as provided for by a condominium association agreement; b. removing the definition for “drive-through business” and replacing with the following: “drive-through business” means an establishment with facilities for on-site service to customers who remain in their motor vehicles. A drive-through business may include banking, food series, dry cleaning, but does not include a drive-in theatre. A drive-through shall be deemed an accessory component of that business.

2. THAT Section 7.33, Objects Prohibited or Restricted in Yards, be amended by repealing 7.33.3 and replacing with the following: In a residential district, no person shall allow or permit a recreation vehicle to be used for living or sleeping accommodation from September 16 to May 14. Additionally, only one recreation vehicle is allowed to be occupied on a site at any time and no rent or fees shall be paid for the use of the site or facilities.

3. THAT Section 7.33, Objects Prohibited or Restricted in Yards, be amended by adding the following: 7.33.11 All types of outdoor boilers are prohibited.

4. THAT Section 8.3.1, Signs not requiring a permit, be amended by repealing section 8.3.1 (j) (iii) and replacing it with the following: (iii) show home signs may be placed in the front yard or adjacent to the street where the show home is located and at the entrance to the subdivision where the show home is located. For this purpose, the entrance to the subdivision shall be deemed where the collector road entering the subdivision meets an arterial roadway. A maximum of 5 show home signs shall be permitted in any neighbourhood.

5. THAT Section 9.5, High Density Residential District (R3), be amended by adding the following text under Maximum Building Height: All Others : 10.5 m (34.5 ft) 6. THAT Section 9.9, Neighbourhood Convenience Commercial District (CN), be amended by adding “car wash” as a discretionary use.

7. THAT Section 9.12, Light Industrial District (I1), be amended by adding “gas bar” as a permitted use and “parking facility” as a discretionary use.

8. THAT Section 9.13, Heavy Industrial District (I2), be amended by adding “parking facility” as a discretionary use.

9. THAT the regulations specific to Bareland Condominium

a. Adding a General Purpose: The intent of bareland condominium recreation parks are to provide a comprehensively designed development to accommodate units for recreational and holiday accommodation, including recreation vehicles and park model recreation units. b. Removing (2) and replacing with the following: (2) Maximum size: Recreation Vehicle: Length: 12.5m (41 ft.)

Width: 3.65 m (12 ft.)

Height: 3.80 m (12.6 ft.)

Park Model Recreation Unit: 50 m2 (538 ft2) 10. THAT Sections 9.18, Lakeshore Direct Control District (L-DC), and 9.19, Direct Control District (DC-1), be amended by adding “Commercial School” as a listed use.

A Public Hearing regarding the proposed Bylaw will be held on Monday July 25, 2016 at 6:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers of the Municipal Government Building at 5012 48th Avenue, Sylvan Lake, Alberta.

All persons in favour or opposed to the Bylaw will have the opportunity to be heard. If you are unable to attend personally, written submissions must be submitted to the Municipal Government Building no later than 12:00 noon on Thursday July 21, 2016.

Doug had an immeasurable impact on our community and the people in it. Sylvan Lake home builder wins big Falcon Homes recipient for Large Volume Builder of the Year

The Central Alberta Awards of Excellence in Housing was a big night for Falcon Homes TODD COLIN VAUGHAN SYLVAN LAKE NEWS Home is where the heart is they say.

Local Central Albertan business Falcon Homes was recently awarded with some prestigious awards in honour of the homes they built during the fiscal year of 2015.

General Manager of Falcon Homes John Christie was excited for the company to receive this distinction.

“We worked hard all year – we built 95 homes that year,” he said “It shows you that you have been good to your customers, your customers are happy with you and that trades and suppliers have been helping you along the way.”

Falcon Homes won the Large Volume Builder of the Year Award, which awards companies who build 25 homes and over.

To receive this award, a company must finish as a finalist in at least one category of home – which are separated into different home and price brackets.

Falcon Homes won Renovator of the Year, Safety and Leadership, Builder Member of the Year, Best New multi-Family Home, Best Townhouse/duplex over $225,000 and Best Renovation between 75 and 124 thousand dollars. Christie also took home the personal distinction of the Gus Bakke Memorial Award, which hon-

Christie credits Falcon’s employees for the awards received.

“Most of our trades and suppliers have been with us for almost 20 years and any new ones we bring in – we make sure they produce quality work and are professional,” he said “That helps us because they know exactly how to build our homes; what we like to see in our homes; and they know what kind of quality we expect to see.

“They also help us with pricing depending on the economy.”

With the Alberta Economy at a unsteady point, Christie is looking for many ways to expand Falcon Home’s business other then just number of homes built.

“With the economy, it can be a little tough, but we are always trying to grow,” he said. “Not necessarily always building more homes, but grow by being on top of the trend and knowing what kind of products are out there to help out customers.”

He added that they always want to get “better at what they do.”

For Christie, the challenge and reward of home building often comes from building in a Central Alberta – which requires multiple perspectives for multiple communities.

“Central Alberta is pretty big,” Christie said. “This means that you have a lot of different communities that you build in and that could mean multiple different styles of home.”

He added that the awards are a huge honour and he is looking forward to continuing to build more homes next year.

On Saturday, July 2, the Canadian Wrestling Coalition (CWC) honoured our nation with their very first event, Maple Leaf Mayhem, at the Sylvan Lake Community Centre The event featured sixbouts in the squared circle – with a surprise tag team battle to finish off the evening of grapples, submissions and slams.

Jack Pride, who returned to the ring after losing a contract versus contract match to Dylon Stone last month, was pleased with the results of the evening.

“Overall, I think Maple Leaf Mayhem was our strongest show to date,” he

said. “We had a solid card that delivered top to bottom.”

Pride wrestled at Maple Leaf Mayhem under the employment of Stone – who now owns Pride’s future with the CWC. Despite having to work for a bad guy in the ring, Pride looks forward to working in Sylvan Lake and Central Alberta again.

“With crowd support like that, we would be crazy not to come back,” Pride said when referring to the near 400 people that packed into the gymnasium.

Pride was also happy to see a hometown Sylvan Lake boy, T.S. Cutler, get a big victory in from of his friends and family. continued on page 17

“It was great,” he said referring to Cutler’s approval. “The crowd was hot and receptive to the show. You could especially tell there was a strong local presence after T.S. Cutler got the three count and the roof blew off the building.”

Pride is excited for the future of CWC wrestling in Central Alberta.

“I keep seeing a lot of the same faces in the crowd, so we’ve definitely got fans who are willing to follow us, but at the same time there are tons of new faces at every show,” he said. “It just shows that we’re growing as a company e and gaining support nd from our fans and the und community.”

The wrestlers of CWC will return in under a month on August 6, when they grapple out in Blackfalds for their show Primal Instinct.

Pickleball swings into Central Alberta New sport for all ages arrives

TODD COLIN VAUGAN SYLVAN LAKE NEWS A new sport is springing up all over Central Alberta.

Pickleball, which was originally invented in the 1960s as a kid’s backyard game, has now become a global phenomenon that has caught on with people of all ages due to not only its ease of access, but also

the competiveness, activeness and fun involved.

The game combines elements of tennis, ping-pong and badminton, and puts people in singles or doubles competition in indoor or outdoor settings.

Sylvan Lake Recreation Department Official Jordan Naturkach started a Pickleball club after receiving several emails asking for this sport to be made available.

“It’s easy to start a program up when you have interest from the community,” he said. “Before our first day we had 10-12 people saying they were interested so that makes it easy knowing that you will have people out consistently.

The program runs on three newly painted courts outside in the outdoor arena grounds behind the Sylvan Lake Community Centre and runs Tuesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. until noon, and Wednesdays from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m.

“We wanted to provide evening time for families and people who work during the day to come out and try it,” Naturkach said.

The program is free of charge and Pickleball equipment was purchased through Red Deer Pickleball supplies – which is the ambassador for the sport in Central Alberta. continued on page 19

“It is definitely a game for everyone,” he said. “It is easy to get into and we have staff willing to teach people the game.
