Inspection gives ‘fair’ grade to aquaplex Leaking roof biggest issue

BY JEFFREY HEYDEN-KAYE PONOKA NEWS In the near future, town council will have to decide whether to invest more money into the aquaplex or spend the cash towards a new one.

One of the key points for that consideration is knowing that the recreation building needs a new roof, due to leaking, which is valued at $365,000. Council heard about the cost Thursday, June 23 during a committee of the whole meeting where Justin Caslor, engineering technician for the Town of Ponoka, answered questions about the building.

“Overall the facility was in generally fair condition,” said Caslor.

He referred to a study conducted by RPM Consulting in January of the town’s recreation facilities. The aquaplex’s rating was 4.35 out of 5 with the site, building interior and exterior, systems and special equipment having a high rating.

One category called “other systems” did not fare so well with a 3.4 rating.

The pool was built in 1976 with a wading pool added in 1990 and in 1998 the Kinsmen provided a donation used to replace the lighting at the pool’s boiler.

Coun. Marc Yaworski asked what other options there are for the next one to three years other than a full repair of the roof, which would mean a complete overhaul and removal of the roof. Caslor suggested not to spend any money if council intends to move forward with a new aquaplex in three years, as outlined in the culture and recreation plan.

Dave McPhee, director of operations and property services added spending $200,000 on the pool may provide a 10 year solution but would not completely fix the leak. Spending the full $365,000 would give the new roof at least 25 years of life.

CAO Albert Flootman estimates a new aquaplex at $12 million. He said the current building is fundamentally in good condition but there are certain areas that need attention. The town has also included the roof repair in the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program grant request but it is unclear if the project will be eligible.

The one thing the facility study did not take into consideration is if the building meets residents’ needs. The purpose of RPM’s work was to determine the building’s life and maintenance needs.

Despite the relatively high ratings there are several areas within the 45page report that recommend repair or replacement of equipment within five to 10 years. These are some of the repair recommendations within each category.

• Site: asphalt on the east side parking lot is deteriorating and is making rain drainage difficult and there are dips in the concrete sidewalk.

• Building envelope/exterior: water is leaking through the roof and the roof membrane is over 20 years old.

Sealant around the windows has deteriorated. Doors are missing weather stripping and there is minor damage to the siding.

• Building interior: There is water staining on the acoustical ceiling tiles due to the roof leaking. The concrete floor in the mechanical room is deteriorating, the wood in the sauna is aging and there are other minor issues with the vinyl flooring.

• Mechanical/electrical: Main electrical distribution panels are showing signs of corrosion. Generally there are a range of minor fixes estimated to be replaced in five to 10 years.

• Structure: The wood covered walls and ceiling are showing signs of water damage due to the leaking roof.

• Special equipment: This category showed the treatment pumps and filtration equipment will reach the end of their life in 10 years. Same for the boilers supplying water to the main pool tanks and the sauna heater. There is not enough storage for pool treatment chemicals.

• Other systems: There are several out of date systems including the current fire alarm system. The current roof access ladder does not meet safety code standards.

Flootman told council that in the near future administration will be asking council to make a decision on the future of the aquaplex.

Slo-pitch is correct course - The Alberta Community Corrections and Release Programs Branch hosted their second annual slo-pitch tournament on June 24 to 26 at the diamonds on the Moose Lodge grounds south of Ponoka. More than 65 members of community corrections, RCMP, Alberta Sheriffs, family and friends participated in the tournament and the weekend of camaraderie and fun. This year’s event focused on community engagement and networking with local law enforcements. Ponoka RCMP ‘Pink Patrol’ would end up losing the final to community corrections ‘Purple Rain’, who earned their second straight championship.

Search warrant nets cocaine and other drugs

BY JEFFREY HEYDEN-KAYE PONOKA NEWS A search warrant on a Ponoka home last week netted cocaine valued at $3,500.

Ponoka RCMP along with the Ponoka RCMP general investigation section and police dog services conducted the search warrant on Tuesday, June 21 at approximately 3 p.m. Along with the cocaine, a small amount of marijuana, hash and mushrooms, plus drug packaging materials were found.

A husband and wife were arrested along with a third male who was taken into

custody as part of the investigation. The husband and wife were charged with trafficking and two counts of possession of a controlled substance.

They were released on recognizance.

Broken down vehicle unregistered Having a broken down vehicle didn’t help two people considering it was uninsured and unregistered.

A member of the Ponoka Integrated Traffic Unit noticed the vehicle with a flat tire Monday, June 27 on Highway 2. Upon arrival a quick check of the vehicle showed it had no insurance or registration

and that a female passenger had a small amount of methamphetamine in her possession plus warrants for her arrest.

The owner of the vehicle, who was in the passenger’s seat at the time, could face a hefty fine of $2,800 for no insurance if found guilty.

The woman was released on $1,500 no cash bail.

Right now we are building a house and we use tools like levels, squares and tape measures a lot. As a nation, we have been building “Asohkana” with our neighbours. The Cree word for Ponoka is Asohkan, ‘bridge’.

Since the early settlers arrived, and settled in Treaty# 6 Territory, our First Nation men helped clear the land and pick rocks for minimum wages in order to help establish the town of Ponoka.

We continue to bridge and support our neighbors by contributing to the economic development of Ponoka.

My family and I are major buyers from Adam’s Chevrolet, we shop in Ponoka for food, We support the Ponoka Stampede, my grandchildren and children attended school in Ponoka. Joe Butterfield was always quick off his horse and ready to tie those elusive calves, and worked many rodeos while following on the heels of the ongoing generations in the proud and talented Butterfield family rodeo tradition.

Greg Butterfield qualified for the Canadian Finals Rodeo nine times, and during his illustrious career was the Canadian Steer Wrestling Champion in 1977-1979 and 1980, and has been a long-standing member of the Ponoka Stampede Association.

Joe Dodds enjoyed a successful bull riding career, which included winning the Calgary Stampede Championship in 1978. He also worked as a stunt performer for six movies and has served on the PSA for many years.

Thank you to everyone who have kindly assisted us with information and photos for the many stories and features that we have run in the Ponoka News in celebration of the 80th edition of the Ponoka Stampede. Along the way, we may have missed a few names and made a few mistakes, but then again no one is perfect, and our main objective has been to honour this first class Canadian rodeo event, the countless memories and legends, the dedicated promoters, sponsors, volunteers, and fans, and, of course, our great community for always being the perfect hosts.

John Dodds began his colourful rodeo career on the Little Britches circuit riding bulls and broncs in 1963. After turning pro in these events, he went on to win four Canadian Bull Riding Championships, while qualifying seven times for the Canadian finals as well as the NFR in 1972 and 1977, and later enjoyed work as a movie stuntman.

The Butterfield boys, Tom, Bud, and Brian, who were just recently inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame, are pictured here with Bud’s first 1956 Canadian Steer Decorating Championship saddle. Their amazing rodeo careers began in the mid1950s with Tom competing in steer wrestling and decorating, while Bud and Brian achieved outstanding steer wrestling records, with Bud winning seven Canadian championships. Brian, who also rode bareback, won four steer wrestling titles and an all-round in 1958. Tom Butterfield was inducted into the CPRA Hall of Fame as a builder in 1996 and served many years with the PSA and the CPA.

Dee Butterfield has enjoyed an illustrious rodeo career that has followed four colorful decades as a barrel racing super-star. After winning 15 amatuer BR titles, this multi-talented lady turned pro, where she competed in 11 Canadian Finals Rodeos, earned four CPRA Leader Titles, and won the 1992 Canadian Championship. Her ongoing love and enthusiasm for family and the sport of rodeo has allowed Dee to continue to share her great skills and knowledge as a horse trainer, instructor, mentor and host of barrel racing clinics throughout the world.

Kenney’s tough task ahead Can an outsider revive the fortunes of a political party that were buried by a previous outsider before him?

That could be a good question for hopefuls of uniting the right wing political forces in Alberta.

Apparently, Jason Kenney, former Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s close confidante, right-hand-man and trusted ally, has already found a positive response to that question because last week’s most talked about political development before the Brexit vote was the news that Kenney had decided to leave federal politics to head for provincial politics in Alberta.

Now we all remember how Jim Prentice’s dash to PC leadership looked so promising but proved so disappointing in last year’s elections.

PC leadership was so concerned after the clumsy Alison Redford brought the party’s support among the electorate almost to the bottom that they sought a figure who could restore the authority of the four-decade old PC dynasty and render another election victory for the old party.

Restoration of the powerful position of right wing politics in the province or in the country is not impossible, however, if and when it is restored, it will have to be a new right.

Bull-ish for the Ponoka Stampede Just An Observation Having grown up in rural Alberta surrounded by farm animals, tractors, combines, grain fields and lots of cattle, you’d think rodeo would be in one’s blood.

Well, for this one, I was always fascinated by the fact some kids I knew growing up could get up on a steer or a horse, strap themselves in and hang on to something tantamount to riding in airplane turbulence while clutching the seat with one hand.

I never once tried any of the events - bull riding was too much, saddle bronc or bareback didn’t look like fun considering I knew what it felt when I rode on the farm and they weren’t trying to buck me off, didn’t quite have the coordination to pull off calf roping (yes, I know it’s not politically correct, but that’s what it is) and I certainly didn’t have the physical stature to even attempt wrestling anything bigger than a chicken.

All that said, I still loved to go watch the local amateur rodeo with a bunch of people from the area that I knew as well as take in all the sights and sounds. And quite quickly, I began to develop a fondness for the various events due to their artistry and the sheer athleticism they had to display to perform.

Then when earlier this year, they got no one else to come calling to host it, went back to those they rejected and asked if their deal was still on the table.

It wasn’t and now the CPRA is in a barrel with the bull bearing down on them as Edmonton will host its last CFR this November and there is no where to go for 2017. It’s gotten so bad in fact, that the CPRA is looking for new leadership and it seems like the ship is sinking without anyone working to bail out the water.

For the sake of those people that have dedicated years to working, volunteering and competing at the CFR, I hope the situation works itself out and the 2017 CFR goes somewhere.

As for the Ponoka Stampede, it looks to continue to be in good hands for the foreseeable future and promises to look at getting even better with some different events like the Ride, Rock & Roll last week.

Keep it up and - Yeehaw.

Ponoka’s Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) is looking to raise its community profile and let residents know of the many services offered by the group.

To do that FCSS hosted a community neighbourhood-party style barbecue Thursday, June 23 with burgers, hot dogs and all the fix-ins needed to create the perfect sandwich. Chairperson Doug Gill said the barbecue was also a way to celebrate Ponoka and to encourage people to stay in town during Ponoka Stampede.

The event also brought a magician, music and fun activities for attendees.

Gill’s hope is to see a greater awareness in FCSS’s services, which not everyone may know about. One area Gill hopes to see an update in is the association’s asset

mapping. Several years ago an assessment was conducted on services in the community and community needs.

“There’s still not a lot of programs covered for youth,” he added.

Another area Gill wants to see expanded is in FCSS’s parameters around spending, which are heavily restricted. For Ponoka the group is able to leverage funds from the Alberta Health Services home care grant. Spending FCSS grant dollars is more restricted.

To combat that, FCSS groups in central Alberta are advocating allowing for less restricted spending in the areas of food and transportation, said Gill. With the economy in a slump, Gill says Ponoka’s FCSS has seen an increase in requests for support in those two areas.

Our new summer VIC staff are planning weekly events that include prizes and lots of laughs throughout July and August. Details about these events will be unveiled at an Open House at the VIC on Friday, July 8, from 5-7 p.m.

“Our weekly events are all about having fun and getting to know Ponoka better,” says Sadie Dodds, one of the VIC summer staff members. “You can pre-register at our Open House, so mark July 8 on your calendar and bring the whole family!”

Our VIC summer staff have a busy summer ahead. Their responsibilities include: Sadie is one of three post-secondary students who are excited to be working at the VIC this summer. In the fall, she’ll return to South Western Oklahoma State University where she is working toward a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education. She was born and raised in Ponoka and is thrilled to be back and working at the VIC this summer.

Carmen Lomas has also joined our VIC summer staff. She just graduated from Ponoka Secondary Campus and plans to attend Olds College this fall in the Tourism and Hospitality program. Carmen lives on a cattle farm with her parents north of Ponoka.

Lisa Wilkinson is our third VIC summer staff member. She’s also a graduate of Ponoka Secondary Campus and now attends the University of Alberta in the Faculty of Education.

She’s studying to become a junior and senior high school teacher.

Energy lobby looking for support on pipelines

“Recovery of the oil and gas industry will continue to be a long-term process” was the main message business operators heard from the guest speaker at the monthly meeting of Ponoka and District Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday, June 21.

About 20 people came to the lunch-time session at the Ponoka Royal Canadian Legion to hear Chris Montgomery, manager of exploration and production communications for the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) touch on the biggest issue facing the industry currently.

CAPP represents about 90 per cent of Canada’s producers and has been lobbying anyone that will listen about what they have been doing and need to have in order to bring the industry out of the present doldrums.

“For the past three years, we’ve been talking to municipalities about the direct impact they have on our membership and this economy is likely also affecting you and your businesses,” Montgomery said.

Since the latest downturn started in August of 2014, he explained that oil has been as low as $28 per barrel and that even though the price has rebounded to around the $50 mark, the industry continues to reel.

“In 2014, capital investment by the industry was about $81 billion with the projection for this year just $31 billion. That’s a 62 per cent decline - the most significant two-year drop since we began keeping track in 1947,” he stated.

“As well, the number of wells being drilled is down dramatically. Last year, there were 5,200 wells with only 3,200 projected for this year, which is a full one-

third of the number drilled two years ago. Members have also seen the loss of 44,000 jobs with most of those occurring in Alberta. This is a real and prolonged downturn with the hurting and impact being felt throughout the economy and the entire country.

And, we are not done yet.”

On the other side, Montgomery explained natural gas has been dealing with very low prices since 2008 and the hope is that an adjustment may come if liquid rich natural gas - better known as liquefied natural gas (LNG) - can come more on-stream, that it will provide better revenue as LNG has heavier hydrocarbons that can be extracted and are more valuable since those are tied to the price of oil.

ulations and expenses being looked at will place on industry; and, the biggest of them all, the need for new pipelines to get their products to new markets.

“We can no longer rely on selling to the United States. They have brought on much production in recent years that they can pretty much use their own domestic supply and not need Canada,” he stated.

The U.S. has increased their oil production by 3.2 million barrels per day, whereas Canada’s daily production is 9.3 million barrels and it looks worse on the natural gas side with Canada’s total daily production of 14.5 billion cubic feet now equal to the amount of new production being added annually by the U.S. “It makes no sense for us to market there anymore.

Without offshore LNG and pipelines east and west, the industry here is facing a fundamental challenge.

Eastern Canada imports oil right now, so it’s important the Energy East pipeline be able to displace it with our own oil and the other pipelines need to come together so we can see this turn around,” he added.

Montgomery explained getting that message out there has been hard, despite the fact CAPP’s own polling shows Canadians support the industry.

“By a two-to-one margin, Canadians support us, but are also less likely to speak up, feeling they don’t have the information and with the bar so swayed to the other side that they aren’t confident in speaking up,” he said.

That’s why they have launched Canada’s Energy Citizens, an online and social media campaign designed show they aren’t alone and to arm people with information to fight for what he called a vital industry to the province and country.

Project on residential schools brings history to life

BY JORDIE DWYER PONOKA NEWS A project that took a look back at a terrible part Canada’s history has proven to have left a lasting impression among Ponoka youth.

The Grade 7 students at Ponoka Secondary participated in a project that made them take a hard look at the situation surrounding First Nations treatment in residential schools.

Students not only spoke to relatives that were survivors, but also teamed up to make posters, a tile mosaic and a video clip that documented the issue.

Shelagh Hagemann - First Nations, Métis, and Inuit (FNMI) student success coordinator for Wolf Creek Public Schools (WCPS) - explained the project was part of their social students program in the hope that they would get a look some locally relevant history. The project came to fruition on Tuesday, June 21 - which, by no coincidence, was National Aboriginal Day in Canada.

“It was about helping the student to recognize the legacy that has been left behind as a result of the residential schools and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission hearings and its report, as well as the federal government apology,” she said.

“It is not good enough to simply look back at (residential schools), but to provide an opportunity for our First Nations students to learn more about their history and how the survivors have succeeded. It’s also about showing them what has to be done in order to move forward and demonstrating to all of the students about what happened, as most of them didn’t know anything about what went on.”

Louis Bull First Nation elder Joseph Deschamps was also an integral part of the project and felt every student needs to learn about the history behind First Nations.

“This project really was about making them think and motivating them to open their eyes and share their knowledge,” he said.

“By doing that, it is one of the ways we can all move on.

Canada has such a young history with a number of the people who were settlers in the land still having no knowledge of

First Nations, that’s why this is so important.”

And that importance certainly left an indelible impression on the students, as judged by their reactions to having participated.

Talyi Yellowbird and Odessa Mackinaw both worked on the video and interviewed a relative who survived life in a residential school. Both girls felt they learned more about how First Nations people were treated.

“I was surprised there were still survivors out there, which included my kokum (Cree for grandmother),” said Yellowbird. “It’s very emotional and sad about how tough it was for them.”

Mackinaw also talked to her kokum and found out something she never knew.

“She was surprised that I wanted to talk about it and that we were learning about what happened. Not much of it was new, but I learned that most of them that were at the residential schools tried to run away at least once.”

Laci Bell and Fiona Knobles were part of the group that created the tile mosaic, that now stands in a frame alongside the federal governments formal apology for the residential schools and a ceremonial feather that hangs outside the main office at the school in recognition of how important First Nations are to the culture of WCPS. “Working on the tiles was my way of showing the story, letting everyone know just what happened and that a lot of people never knew exactly what went on,” said Bell. “It was good to learn about a different culture and to see just how they were treated plus how we should all be treated now.”

For Knobles, who painted a bird as part of the mosaic to represent freedom, the project helped her appreciate a few things about the survivors.

“I was shocked at just how many suffered (at the residential schools) so it was important for me to help create the picture in order to better relate to them and as a way to say sorry,” she stated.

One of the non-First Nations students, Daniel Aitken, helped edit the video and it really affected his thinking after having never heard anything about their treatment before.

“It made me feel really bad as I learned more,” he said.

A story of bravery and its recoginition SUBMITTED BY JACK SPINK On July 7, 2007, like so many other people, I was watching the television coverage of the Calgary Stampede.

During the ninth heat of the chuckwagon

races, I watched an act of bravery and heroism that had me on the edge of my seat.

For readers who may not be aware of what happened that day, here I explain: After the wagons and outriders had completed the figure-8 in the infield, and were heading

into the first corner, two of the wagons bumped into each other, knocking one of the drivers, Tyler Helmig, out of his wagon.

Tyler ended up uninjured, but now there was a runaway chuckwagon on the track, being pulled by four thoroughbreds, running at a full gallop.

These animals are bred to run, and if not stopped or turned, they would simply keep on running possibly right in the fence at the corner of the track, thereby injuring (or killing) themselves and possibly causing a major wreck with one or more of the other three wagons on the track in that race.

In addition, there were some 16 outriders on horseback in the race as well. Young outrider Chanse Vigen was one of them riding for another team, but he witnessed what had happened, and thinking quickly, he chose to disregard his own safety to try to stop this wreck before it happened.

Running at a full gallop, he jumped off the back of his horse and into the back of the runaway chuckwagon. His idea was to work his way to the front of the wagon and get a hold of the reins and thus bring the horses to a stop. However, it turns out that when Tyler was knocked out of the wagon, he was holding onto the reins, and

so when Chanse got to them, they were dragging off the ground.

Undeterred, he knew that he would have to do something else to stop this potential disaster, and quickly. So, what did he do?

Again, with his only thought to stopping this team, he stepped over the front of the wagon box and onto the pole that runs between the horses. He managed to slowly inch his way along the steel pole until he was able to climb aboard one of the back (wheeler) horses. From this position, he was able to bring the team to a stop, thus averting a disaster. After watching his actions, I thought that Chanse deserved some form of recognition for his brave actions.

After some research, I contacted the Federal Government and submitted his name to the Office of the Governor General along with the facts of his actions. Chanse was awarded a certificate, signed by the then Governor General Michaelle Jean with the following inscription: “A commendation is awarded to Chanse Vigen for an act of great merit in providing assistance to others in a selfless manner in Calgary, Alberta, on July 14, 2007.”

I was very pleased that Chanse’s actions were recognized.

Growing up in central Alberta, it is impossible not to know about the Ponoka Stampede. Even if you have never been interested in rodeo you know of it and the events that are held. In 1936, the tradition of the Ponoka Stampede was born and has been going strong ever since.

The stampede in 1936 was very different than the stampede now, however. The events were different and everything was less expensive.

In 1936, some of the events were saddle bucking, wild cow milking, one mile relay, half mile Indian race (you had to be an Indian to enter), half mile chariot race and more. There was also the boys’ and girls’ races at the end of the night. These races were like the track and field events kids now compete at school. There was also a ladies’ softball tournament every night as well. Besides the rodeo, there were other events as well such as the carnival and Jitney Dance. This was a dance where you would pay 15 cents to get into the dance club and then you would have to pay five

cents for every dance.

In 1936, the rodeo raised a total of $1,700 and their total expenses were $1,532. This meant that in reality the Stampede only made $168. During the first Stampede, the prizes consisted of $486 which was a lot of money back in the day. However in 2010, the prize was $3,000,000. That is quite the price difference. In 1936, all of the horse stock used for the saddle bucking and bareback riding cost $111 and in 2010 they cost $100,000. The cost of all the cattle in 1936 was $80 and in 2010 the cost was $30, 000.

In 1936, you could see all the expenses and income of the Stampede in the “Stampede Statement” that was published in the local newspaper.

Back in 1936, there were different standards for what was a cowboy. A ranch hand, or someone who worked on a farm or ranch was not in fact classified as a cowboy. The entertainers and competitors in the rodeos were what made a cowboy. One of the first Ponoka Stampede cowboys was George McKeddie. He was the one who led the stampede and also competed in it. He won the 1936 half mile chariot race.

Four Maskwacis nations and province take new step in Indigenous education Letter of intent signed to collaborate

BY JEFFREY HEYDEN-KAYE PONOKA NEWS The four Maskwacis bands are taking collaboration to a new level by working with Alberta Education on a new initiative aimed at bringing equal funding to First Nations students while keeping true to the Cree culture.

A letter of intent with the province was signed Tuesday, June 21, the National Aboriginal Day at the Ermineskin Junior/Senior High School that sets the stage for a joint school board to lay the ground for a curriculum for all Maskwacis students.

Minister of Education David Eggen said there is a new spirit of collaboration and anticipation for what is to come with this letter of intent. Eventually a memorandum of understanding

will be signed, according to the minister, to ensure equal funding for all students in the province. He added that no child should receive anything but the best education available to them.

“It won’t be an easy route but there is a new spirit of collaboration,” said Eggen.

The four chiefs at Maskwacis are equally as excited for what is to come.

For Ermineskin Chief Randy Ermineskin the hope is that teachers and students are at the forefront of the plans.

“It’s important that we embark on something new.”

Samson Chief Kurt Buffalo suggested that implementing the goals will be challenging but that collaboration of planners helped make this possible. Louis Bull Chief Irvine Bull added that this will help create a continuation of the Cree culture and

language.

“We must continue to speak it for our future generations,” said Bull.

For Montana Chief Darryl Strongman bringing education to the forefront for Maskwacis children is important. He said equal education was one of the treaty promises to First Nations people. “It’s all on behalf of the children of Maskwacis,” said Strongman of the endeavour.

The need for Cree education This new measure has been a few years in the making with the Nipisihkopahk Education Authority (NEA) and Miyo Wahkohtowin Education (MWE) working with two levels of government: Alberta Education and Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC).

scenes are superintendents Brian Wildcat, for MWE (Ermineskin) and Kevin Wells for NEA (Samson). A few years ago the pair looked at ways they could amalgamate efforts to bring better funding and programming for students.

Eventually principals from all the schools and board directors became involved in the process. As discussions continued, INAC became involved by providing some seed money to begin planning with a one-day conference for all four chiefs and councils, explained Wells.

This put the idea in motion.

Involving the province was the next step in that collaboration.

“We’ve been working on the letter of intent since the fall, on the actual wording of it,” explained Wildcat.

Federal funding for First Nations students is approximately one-third less than provincial funding for students outside of the reserve and has not been changed for 15 years, said Wildcat. “That’s why we fell so far behind.”

That inequity can add a lot of money to be missed out on.

To help realize how one education system can work for the four bands, INAC provided research funds to help develop the idea. Alberta Education joined in on the process.

“The province has said, ‘We’ve got some expertise

as well,’” said Wells.

Enhancements could be financial to help close the funding gap and/or to create a First Nations curriculum that includes their language and culture in the programming but meets provincial requirements.

“We’re trying to create a Maskwacis/Cree system… and make it a system that’s appropriate for the community,” said Wildcat.

Eventually consultation with stakeholders in Maskwacis will also be part of the planning. Sometime after the new year Wildcat expects governance of the education authority will be outlined and then a management structure after that.

From there a business case,

including how it should be funded, will be presented to INAC. There are two aspects to the plan: working with both the federal guidelines and the provincial diploma curriculum. Eventually the two are expected to be merged in the course of the implementation.

INAC is working closely with the two as a collaborative framework was already in the planning stages. “Right away the collaboration started and it’s based entirely on trust,” said Wildcat.

The ultimate goal of the whole scheme is to ensure students have balanced education while keeping the Cree language and culture together.

New provincial radio system still too expensive

While a new province-wide emergency radio system is free to use, municipalities are finding it’s just too much for them to handle financially.

Last week, the provincial government finally announced the official launch of the Alberta First Responders Radio Communications System (AFRRCS), a project that has been in the works for the past eight years.

The system is a network for two-radio communication for municipal, provincial, federal and First Nation emergency response agencies that will formally come online on Friday, July 1.

A total of 332 radio towers are being placed strategically around Alberta, with just four left to be completed by the end of this summer, at an overall cost of $438 million. The system is free to use - the province will be covering the maintenance and operation - though municipalities will be responsible for purchasing the radios and other equipment to connect with the system.

Jones believes it’s going to take many years for the system to become used by many emergency service providers in the province and only when the number of products and suppliers grow so the price points can come down.

Meanwhile, the provincial government is heralding the success of the system through its use during the recent Fort McMurray wildfire disaster.

During a media event last week, provincial justice and solicitor general minister Kathleen Ganley stated the system was crucial in all of the emergency service personnel along with provincial departments and other staff to communicate and coordinate their efforts.

“This important project will help protect the lives of Albertans, from families to first responders. This province-wide radio system will ensure that the people who keep us safe every day have the communication network they need to respond as quickly and as coordinated as possible,” she stated.

Samson School powwow celebrates Aboriginal Day in style

Cree education and culture was at the forefront in Maskwacis last week as the Nipisihkopahk Secondary School held a special elders and youth gathering.

The event was held from Sunday, June 19 to Wednesday, June 22 with a powwow and treaty workshops. Teepees were set up on the school grounds with elders and experts passing on their wisdom to students. For Samson Cree Chief Kurt Buffalo, the event was to celebrate what the school has accomplished over the year, which includes Maskwacis history and culture.

“It’s really a great day to be Indigenous,” said Buffalo.

One of the challenges for First Nations communities is keeping their culture after having to survive many years under the residential school system.

Despite that and other challenges, the youth and elders gathering is intended to fill the gaps from the inter-generational trauma because of those residential schools.

“To ensure that the children out here get that opportunity that their grandparents didn’t receive,” said Buffalo.

The gathering is expected to bring traditions and protocols to youths so that they too can pass on their culture to their children.

Cree language to culture bond explained

BY JEFFREY HEYDEN-KAYE PONOKA NEWS Language is universally accepted as part of one’s culture and this is especially true for Cree First Nations, according to Jeff Wastesicoot, a language consultant, or keeper of the language, from Saddle Lake. He took part in the Nipisihkopahk Secondary School youth and elders’ gathering last week.

The event started Sunday, June 19 and went on until Wednesday, June to 22 with elders and cultural experts speaking with youths about the Cree culture.

“Our language is actually very spiritual,” said Wastesicoot. “We tend to translate differently to what it’s articulated in the English language.”

While English generally has references to objects with a literal meaning to something, Cree takes more into account concepts in referring to happenings.

To help illustrate the difference, Wastesicoot said when settlers first met the Indigenous peoples and their celebrations, a literal word was used to describe them.

Using the word “pipe” is not enough to describe the pipe ceremony as it does not have the same meaning in Cree. “Pipe is a Latin term with a tube with a hole in it basically,” he explained.

“There really is spiritual meaning to that language,” he added.

In Cree it also means, “being dependant on the spirit.”

Another example Wastesicoot used was the word “sundance.” At the time, settlers noticed First Nations people dancing in the sun for days. While the settlers were able to see what was happening they didn’t understand the meaning of the dance.

He gave numerous examples such as sweetgrass and sweat lodge, again observed in a literal sense. “In our language…it has nothing to do with perspiring,” said Wastesicoot of the sweat lodge.

“It talks about the cleansing of the spirit, the mind, body and the physicalness (sic) of it.”

Understanding the Cree language is to understand the spiritual nature of the culture that goes with it, explained Wastesicoot.

He suggests the true identify of First Nations people is getting lost in the shuffle of labels like Aboriginal, Indians and even Cree, which is derived from the word “Kristineaux,” a name used by French fur traders.

The true name is Nêhiyawak “the people that draw their strength from the four directions.”

Wastesicoot added that even

the terms east, west, north and south do not have the same meaning as indicated in a compass. One example for north is it is described as a place where home is.

The list continues and for Wastesicoot, making the spiritual connection between the language and the culture is paramount. He believes the Cree language is uprooted and getting that back will take some time and understanding the history and decolonizing are important parts of the process.

“We have to declare to the world who we are,” he said.

He calls the Cree language an identity, a culture that informs all protocols and ceremonies. He suggests support of the Cree language and culture should come with capital investments to ensure they live on.

“It’s based out of the recommendations that came out of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission report,” said Wastesicoot.

Once the First Nations speak up on their true identity, Wastesicoot suggests that is when their independence can be known.

This is starting to happen.

Ceremonies that were outlawed only a short time ago are coming back. Singing, powwows, hitting the drum and sweetgrass ceremonies are becoming more accepted.

He is pleased with the developments that are occurring each day in Maskwacis. From the federal government accepting the UN Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples to Cree becoming the official language of Maskwacis, Buffalo says these are steps in the right direction.

“We really don’t know what’s going to happen other than the government’s listening,” said Buffalo.

He is pleased to see action from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau along with the declarations being made.

“I notice a difference in the general population.

They’re starting to see what we’ve been talking about,” said Buffalo.

Now when Buffalo sees a political leader or other stakeholders, there is also acknowledgement of the treaty area. It furthers steps to working together.

“Overall I would say, not just Canadians, but human beings in general, I think the message is that we need to start understanding and respecting each other’s differences,” Buffalo added.

“We each come with our own different set of values and our different ways we praise our Creator. And those unique differences is what makes Canada so special because for the most part we respect each other,” said Buffalo.

That being said, he added that it’s important to remember the lessons from the past.

NSS principal Alvina Flormann added her congratulations and said she is pleased with the growing number of Maskwacis graduates. Each year the number grows despite personal challenges and struggles along the way.

She praised parents and grandparents for supporting the students in their elementary and high school years. “Some of you are raised by your grandparents and we thank you, too,” said Flormann.

Outreach school principal Sharon Seright also praised family members for supporting the students who have become role models in their schools.

“You are role models whether you know it or not,” Seright explained.

The graduates recently walked through the halls of the elementary schools to give the younger students a look at the older students.

Kevin Wells, superintendent of the Nipisihkopahk Education Authority (NEA), said he is pleased to have seen the graduates start at a young age who are now onto a new chapter in their lives.

NEA chairperson Marvin Yellowbird added there are new and exciting developments in First Nations education. He referred to a recent signing of a letter of intent to work with the Government of Alberta to bring equal funding standards to First Nations schools in the province.

This letter is the first step intended to bring cree education and cultural programs to First Nations learning.

Canada Post strike looms Union cites imbalance of rural and urban workers

For the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) the issue is over concessions made by Canada Post in its negotiations to bring after hours delivery of packages to customers.

“They’re pretty massive cuts on the table at a time when Canada Post is profitable,” explained Mike Palecek, national president of CUPW. He added that it is funny Canada Post does not mention the cuts to benefits and job security as part of the negotiations.

“Those are the major issues. Another thing we’re pushing for is equality with urban and rural mail careers,” said Palecek.

Compared to urban mail careers, rural careers average about 28 per cent less salary, he explained. Add to that the majority of rural mail careers are female, Palecek wants to see that fixed. Canada Post justifies that as market advantage, said Palecek.

There are 42,000 urban and 18,000 rural workers employed by Canada Post. Palecek says there are some

cases where urban and rural workers have routes across the street from each other but do not get equal pay. He says Canada Post is refusing to work with the union on this issue.

As for weekend package delivery, Palecek does admit the structures for working on the weekend are somewhat complicated considering the way the week is set up is for weekdays only.

As for Canada Post, the company said when negotiations fell through at the end of 2015 conciliation was initiated to try to bring the sides together, explained Mouktar Abdillahi, spokesperson for Canada Post.

“We started negotiations with our two unions (rural and urban) back at the end of 2015,” he said.

Since then the labour minister brought in a conciliator to help with negotiations although that does not appear to have helped bring the two groups closer to a common consensus.

With July 2 just days away, Abdillahi said the company cannot guarantee mail delivery won’t be disrupted if the strike starts. “We’re going to continue negotiating to get a deal before the end of June.”

He added there are three areas the company is looking at with its negotiations with regard to package delivery after the typical Monday through Friday 9 to 5 work week. Those considerations are being fair to employees, affordable and sustainable long-term contracts and meeting the needs of customers rather than being a burden.

Abdillahi said the package delivery market is competitive and Canada Post must either be able to compete or it will lose customers and market share. That is not possible with the current agreement.

“What it means is on the weekend, that’s double time,” he said.

“It’s not to increase services but we’re looking for flexibility in the current structure to answer the customer’s demands on the weekend.” he added.

Most companies have been notifying their customers that delays in payments of bills by mail even if it is due to a strike will be subject to late payment penalties.

Seventy-four enthusiastic and passionate delegates represented 21 out of the 29 lodges who are members and belong to the Canadian Royal Purple Society. We were extremely satisfied with the turn out.

We were thrilled to perform initiation of a new member – Elsie Tennant into the Sundre Lodge. This initiation, welcome march and pansy ceremony has never been performed in the 23-year history of the ARPLAS at an AGM. It is an impressive ceremony and anyone who belongs to a lodge will know just how special this was for all of us attending.

We encourage all lodges to use the line in any of their correspondence, so the local newspapers will see positively purple and know that it is another Royal Purple item coming at them The bid was accepted from FT Saskatchewan Royal Purple for the 2017 AGM and we will be heading to the beautiful Lakeview Inn & Suites in FT Saskatchewan on June 2, 3 and 4/17.

The incoming officers were installed. At our Friday night banquet we had the pleasure of hearing Katie Jo Jackson of Sundre speak on gender equality, a topic that that she had the honour of speaking on at the United Nations.

Katie Jo is a terrific Grade 12 speaker and we could see why she was chosen to speak at the UN. Sundre Mayor Terry Leslie welcomed us all to their lovely town and area. It is nice to look out and see the mountains off to the west.

Jason Nixon, the local MLA also welcomed all to the area. We then heard Mike McKay who

is responsible for running Camp Kindle, just west of Water Valley. We have taken Camp Kindle—-a division of kidscancercare—- as our provincial charity and we do encourage all lodges to remember the Camp in their budgets.

Last year members of ARPLAS and lodges donated $13,500. At the conference ARPLAS donated $5000 and with lodge and individual donations the total climbed to $8,474 total.

On Saturday morning the representatives of the rest of the charities that we support arrived to give us information on their particular charity and we made all of our annual donations.

Stollery Children’s Hospital rep Beverly Sawchuk told us that we have donated them $95,000 since 2006. This year we gave another $10,000. We were thrilled to hear that ATB will be matching our donation.

Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation rep Patty Bambrick told us that “CP Has Heart Program” will be matching our $10,000 donation to them. All funds will be used for Cardiac care. She showed us an inspiring video of the hospital.

A grand total of $49,000 was presented.

Amazing amount for a small group of Royal Purple members to raise through working a Calgary Casino, selling raffle tickets and putting of special events at conference to raise funds.

Plus the matching grants of $20,000 made it just an awesome AGM. We encourage all to check out your local Royal Purple Lodge and discovery all the wonderful work that these members do in your community. I am quite sure that all of us, over the years, have heard many times that one of the best pick-me-up medicines as we face each and every day is to laugh a lot, at each other, with each other, and at every opportunity.. They also claim that smiling and a real good and happy yawn is one of the best exercises for our faces, but that frowns can become quite painful, and one of our best god-given blessings to share with everyone is a good joke and a great sense of humour.

Although there are a few people who suggest that I shouldn’t take holidays, let me remind everyone that my wife and I are both in retirement mode, and we try to sneak away whenever we wish. Last week, we took the short hop over the Rocky Mountains and totally enjoyed a few days of R and R, lots of walking, picnic lunches and ice cream in the sun, and loads of laughs in and around Parksville on Vancouver Island. We really enjoyed going back to all the

neat spots where we used to take the kids many years ago, including the market at Coombs, where the goats live on the grass roof and the magnificent Cathedral forest where the oldest of the giant Cedar trees has risen there for over 800 years and now towers over 250 feet tall and is 29 feet in circumference.

There are also miles of sandy beaches in the area, and the great miracle of nature is that when the tide goes out every morning it recedes up to a mile, leaving lots of sand on which young and old can walk and run, build sand castles, and find lots of the living and left-over treasures of the sea.

When you get tired you can sit down on one of the many benches or in the soft sand and watch over 50 teams of excited teens playing three on three beach volleyball, as well as many other sports for all ages.

Parksville, B.C. is certainly a ‘retirement haven’ for seniors, who walk, run and tear around in their neat scooters with the built in umbrellas each and every day, with most having a dog tagging along, and the dress code being mildly wild and certainly not old fashioned. In between our many hilarious and totally loosey-goosey games of minigolf at two of the best 18 hole fun-courses in the world, we saw lots of great old antique cars, trucks and motorcycles, and found out too late that at Qualicum Beach they host an

annual Father’s Day Show and Shine that this time around hosted over 500 old but dazzling entries. It was great fun, but it is always nice to come back home really rejuvenated and ready to soar into the summer in an easy going senior mode with family and friends.

A few short chuckles: *The best diet of all is the Bachelor’s Diet. You only eat half of everything you cook because the other half is stuck to the bottom of the pan. *The ‘vanishing Canadian’ is the one who pays cash for everything they buy. I am really slow typing on my computer, but I somehow succeed by using the ‘biblical system’…… seek and ye shall find. *A man we know solved the problem of too many visiting relatives; He borrowed money from the rich ones and loaned it to the poor ones, and now none of them come back.

As I hop along through my 70s, I find that I have mellowed quite a bit, I laugh a whole lot more, and I don’t have to try and make everyone happy, because no matter how hard we try there will always be a few out there who will never respect or appreciate the good intentions of others. Once you have recovered at the end of this week from the grand celebrations of the 80th Ponoka Stampede, you can get on with the rest of your exciting summer, but why not start it off right now by having a great week, all of you.

Summer reading club set to start at Ponoka Jubilee Library

BY JACLYN BERRY Emma Neufeld is here, she is summer reading club coordinator, and guest writer for Ponoka Jubilee Library. We are only five days away from the start of Summer Reading Club.

With this summer’s theme being ‘Wild’, we are excited to kick-off on July 5 with ‘Wild in the Jungle!’. The first week is bound to be busy and exciting and I am looking forward to all the returning and new faces this summer. We are also thrilled to announce that for our first week we have Kae Neufeld joining as a special guest. A few months ago, she traveled to Rwanda and spent time in the jungle with a group of mountain gorillas.

These gorillas are only found in this part of the world and travel freely in packs around the mountains. They are closely studied in order to research how they live in order to preserve the species, and Kae was lucky enough to be able to see them in their

natural habitat. She will be coming in to talk to both age groups about her experiences and she has even put in the extra effort to do a craft with everyone. We’re sure that she will be a fascinating guest speaker and can’t thank her enough for taking the time to come talk to our SRC kids.

As mentioned a couple weeks ago, Sophia the Great Grey Owl will be joining the Reading Club on Tuesday, July 26 at 10:30 a.m. She will be used as an education animal to help teach the children about wildlife rehabilitation.

The Medicine River Wildlife Centre does not charge to come to us, but they do ask for donations to keep their center functioning, so there is a jar for cash donations at the library circulation desk.

The presentation will only be running for the morning SRC group, and is geared towards a younger age group, but everyone is welcome, including children that are not signed up with us for the SRC.

Summer Reading Club this year has had an incredibly successful registration turnout, we had over 20 children in the first two days. A huge thank you goes out to everyone who signed up. Another big thanks goes to all the local businesses that took the time to donate both prizes and funds to the reading club, the SRC wouldn’t be possible without your generosity.

As a reminder, SRC runs Tuesdays and Thursdays starting July 5 and goes until August 18. Ages five to eight

meet from 10:30-11:45 a.m. and ages nine to 12 meet 1:30-2:45 p.m. Whether you are a part of reading club or not, feel free to stop by and see Emma to tell her about all the exciting things you are reading throughout the summer.

Play reflects on residential school experiences of a First Nation chief

BY JORDIE DWYER PONOKA NEWS First Nations storytelling and dance have a lot in common, all of which was on display in a play designed to explain the journey of one child who survived his time in the residential school system.

Called New Blood, the play was created by a dance teacher at Strathmore High School a couple of years ago - a result of Deanne Bertsch spending time at the nearby Siksika First Nation and as a way of getting more involved with the Blackfoot students at the school. The play was staged at the Ponoka United Church on Saturday, June 25 and sponsored by Ponoka Family Community and Support Services (FCSS).

The act brings together the school’s dance and glee classes with the students from the Siksika First Nation that attend along with some drummers and dancers from the First Nation.

It was inspired by the life of Siksika Chief Vincent Yellow Old Woman’s life and experience as a child in the residential school system - which desecrated many First Nations children by taking them away from their families and their heritage. It also pictured how he reclaimed his way of life and became chief.

FCSS executive director Shannon Boyce-Campbell explained there were a number of reason behind bringing such a play to Ponoka.

“First of all, it was a unique way to recognize National Aboriginal Day

that took place on Tuesday, June 21,” she said.

“It was also shown through some asset mapping that was done a few years ago that youth here wanted more opportunity to be involved in the arts scene and this was a great way to promote that, especially with the population we serve.”

Boyce-Campbell added it was interesting to see the reaction of the audience to the journey taken by the young First Nation boy, the emotions and what was learned and shared through the play.

“At its best, the story showed in a non-judgmental way what went on in residential schools in hopes of getting people talking and understanding what went on so we can do better together,” she stated.

The main character, left, in the play called New Blood learns about his First Nations history from of the spirit creatures after his release from the residential school he was taken to early in the play. The play was presented on Saturday, June 25 in hopes of teaching people more about what happened to First Nations children during that time.

Ponoka moviemakers go to Kickstarter to fund movie idea

Two local filmmakers are hoping to fund a movie idea through the crowd funding website Kickstarter.

Grady Wygiera and Austin Lutz have the creativity and the gusto to put together a movie idea that pits two protagonists against an organized crime group in a rural setting.

Called Bleed Dixie, the movie is still in the script-writing phase and the two have 20 days to go with their funding campaign on Kickstarter.

Wygiera came up with the idea of a small town or county entirely run by a mafia organization. The two friends in the movie see how the organization is failing and they deal with the aftermath.

“It’s based off of the Dixie Mafia down in the (United) States,” said Wygiera.

However, the story, plot and characters are all fictional.

Lutz bought into the idea as he has grown up in a rural area all of his life. He is eager to delve further into his rural roots with this movie. “It would give me a chance to identify with really the area I came out of.”

Wygiera has also lived in small towns his whole life and he liked the idea of a creating a story that has town stakeholders in the pockets of organized crime. Originally the movie was called To Kill a King but that will now be part of a back story for the movie.

They went to Kickstarter to help fund the movie and its making. The duo is asking for $15,000 on their Kickstarter page to buy new camera equipment, camera rigs and pay for permits to film the movie around central Alberta. Clive was one location the two felt would be an ideal location.

For movie projects the two have done work in high school and have been improving their skills each year.

“We really do put our heart and soul into them,” said Wygiera.

“I’m really excited about it because I know it could be something amazing,” he added.

Lutz added that the pair intends to create an original music score including work from local artists. “We hope for all the support we can get.”

Playground committee said it took them just over two years to gather the rest of the necessary funding.

Liebeton was grateful to all neighbouring communities and businesses operating there for donating auction items and supporting their cause in various other ways.

“From Bashaw to Ponoka to Wetaskiwin, we received great support and we are grateful,” she said.

Some four years after the idea was first conceived, the new playground at the Mecca Glen School was inaugurated with a ceremony with the participation of students, parents, staff and dignitaries following the school wind-up at the school gym on Friday, June 24.

The playground was constructed entirely by volunteers in the community with equipment purchased by the Playground Committee.

The total cost of the new playground bordered almost $110,000 with a huge fundraising effort undertaken by parents bringing some matching funding from both provincial and municipal governments.

But according to Janny Liebeton, head of the Playground Committee and the spearhead for the project, the top marks go to the county. “They were

Archery, trap shooting, pistol and rifle ranges are in full swing for the season. We had a good showing for the spring clean-up, which we do every spring. There is still some work to do as soon as we can get to it.

We had a bird house building day with lots of kids and parents attending. They had lots of fun and enjoyed the lunch.

The archery nights have been very well attended with quite a few new shooters each week. The trap shooting is going real well, too with lots of new

shooters. Our kids camp is full and everything is a go. This year camp is from July 11 thru 15. anyone who would like to volunteer to help out, whether it be one day or all week, is certainly welcome to come out and enjoy the fun.

Our membership is over 700 members and still growing for the year. All members of Ponoka Fish And Game are members of the Alberta Fish And Game. Through this association, we all are covered with liability insurance when doing fish and game activities.

You are welcome to attend our monthly meetings which are held on the first Thursday of every month starting at 7:30 PM. It is hard to explain everything that we do as it’s an ongoing thing that has been going on since 1950. We try to change with the times as best we can. Sometimes it is a slow process as we are a non-profit organization.

We are very much a conservation organization and strive to conserve all we can for our future generations.

With all the fish and game clubs, and numerous companies and individual people contributing to the conservation of habitat - the Alberta Fish and Game now have over 40,000 acres secured for our future generations to enjoy. There are people in place who work at this project year round so there

Only a couple of months until our rifleman’s rodeo (Labor Day weekend) to be exact. I told you in our last newsletter that this would be our 50th rodeo event but after we checked it out this is going to only be our 49th year as we had to stop a couple of years because of moving our location.

We would still like to have those who helped start the rifleman’s rodeo to come on out Labor Day weekend and give some ideas of what you would like to see happen for our 50th next year 2017.

BY JORDIE DWYER PONOKA NEWS Going with something different always makes people a bit nervous, even if your event is going on to 80.

Hoping to draw in a crowd that might not normally attend a rodeo event, the Ponoka Stampede went with a change in direction - a rock and roll move, one might say - as they took over the organizing of the lead-in event that went Saturday, June 25 at the Stampede grounds.

Following the now annual pre-Stampede bull riding event, Stampede director Keith Kjenner explained the committee went in search of attracting a different demographic.

“We went with something a bit different this year and it seems to have worked out well,” Kjenner said in an interview that night.

“A lot of people hung around long after the pro-

fessional bull riding event and really seemed to enjoy themselves.”

He added the committee hopes to build upon the successes they saw as well as learn a few lessons for next time.

As for the entertainment, Big Sugar - a Torontobased band made popular in the 1990s with their huge hit ‘Turn the Light On’ - played an hour long set, then closed out the night with a 30 minute encore made possible by the very enthusiastic crowd that seemed to grow as the night went on.

Before they took the stage though, it was Vancouver- based 54-40 alternative rock band that gained prominence in the mid-1980 that wowed the crowd with some memories, which included their 1984 hit ‘I Go Blind’.

Lead singer Neil Osborne was pumped by just how great the crowd was.

“It was fun and great to see such an excitement level - from the young and

not so young people dancing to the grandma that was right up at the front of the stage happy as could be. It was a really neat

crowd,” said Osborne, who added they tossed in a few songs from their latest album for the fans.

“Those ones a bit more

fine tuned, but really, we are just thrilled to simply be alive and enjoying being up on stage. Now, I finally get it.”

Sports PBR event raises the curtain on Stampede week Local bull riders make it short go, but not to the prize

BY JORDIE DWYER PONOKA NEWS Less than a second more on the bull and it would’ve been the best outcome possible for organizers, but it wasn’t meant to be.

This is the first year the Ponoka Stampede took over organizing the pre-Stampede Professional Bull Riders (PBR) event, including a pair of local cowboys on the roster, and it turned out to be an excellent show.

Local product Tyler Pankewitz on Shakin Hands put up a big score on the night an 87.5 - early in the qualifying round, besting Ponoka’s other bull rider Wacey Finkbeiner, who got the night started off right as the first rider by putting up a score of 86.

Both men made final top 10, however just one rider made good on his ride and it wasn’t either of the locals.

The only rider to stay on in the final was Jordan Hansen of Okotoks, who posted the highest score of the night of 89.5 right before Finkbeiner was setting up for his ride.

Finkbeiner didn’t last long, leaving Pankewitz as the last man standing and with a legitimate chance for victory if

he could stay on for a good ride. Only, it literally slipped right through his fingers.

“It was that close,” Pankewitz explained afterwards, demonstrating just how close by holding the thumb and index finger of his right hand a centimetre apart.

“My rope didn’t stick as well as I had thought and I lost my hand about four to five seconds into the ride. From then on, I just tried to see if I could hang on long enough. Unfortunately, I just missed staying on.”

That gave Hansen the title as well as the in top prize money, making it one of the richest events on the PBR tour in Canada..

“It was awesome, definitely, to perform in front of my hometown crowd at such a great event,” added Pankewitz, who along with Finkbeiner will be competing in the bull riding at the Ponoka Stampede this week hoping to earn some day money and have a shot at the big money in the Shootout on Sunday, July 3.

Meanwhile, Stampede director Keith Kjenner was pleased with the turn out for the event, considering the economic conditions facing Albertans and the fact they went with a bit of different format - with a rock concert following the bull riding that has not been tried in the past.

Along with a special display of 80 horses with riders carrying the Maple Leaf flag there were special infield performances. The final showdown is set for Sunday, July 3 with the Tommy Dorchester $50,000 Dash for Cash and Pro Rodeo Showdown.

Another eventful soccer weekend for Ponoka teams MUSTAFA ERIC PONOKA NEWS Ponoka minor soccer was represented by eight competitive teams at the 2016 edition of the Central Alberta Soccer Association’s provincial qualifier tournament in Rocky Mountain House over the weekend of June 25/26.

Weather continued to be a factor of nuisance throughout the weekend with many games being interrupted, and some even suspended or called off completely because of the thundery spells.

Of the four Ponoka teams that made to the final game in their categories, the very promising U12 United had to surrender the title because of the sheer weakness in their numbers: They played the final with only eight players and lost to Camrose 4-2.

The U14 girls played against Stettler in their final and lost narrowly with a score of 1-0 when they conceded in the last 20 minutes of the game.

U18 girls claimed the tournament title after handsomely defeating Camrose with 4-2 score.

As for the U18 boys, the controversial situations which marked the last few games with Lacombe continued over the weekend. Ponoka boys won their first game against Camrose 2-0. In their second game against Lacombe, referee suspended the game just as the second half was about to begin and Ponoka was in the lead with 1-0. The long interruption caused the fatigue from the earlier game to set in among Ponoka boys and when the second half finally started, Lacombe scored twice in quick succession. As the play was going on, Lewis McDowell of the Storm collided with a Lacombe player and had to be taken to hospital by ambulance after he reported terrible pain in his knee. His first X rays were reported to show no serious damage.

After the suspension of the game due to to the collision between the players, the play resumed and as the Storm were trying to respond, the game was stopped

The Ponoka team, reduced to only seven members due to work and Ponoka Stampede obligations, kept the larger Stettler squad busy, but eventually were outmanned and lost 4-0. once again due to rain and this time referees called off the rest of the match on grounds that 70 percent of the game time had already been played.

After that, Ponoka and Lacombe were supposed to play the championship title game of the tournament but association officials decided to cancel that game on grounds that both teams had already qualified for provincials.

U14 boys, for their part, made it as far as the semi-final of the “B” division, where they lost an exciting match in a penalty shoot out.

Next soccer action is the Alberta Soccer Association Tier IV Outdoor Rural Provincials for U18 boys and girls, which Ponoka Minor Soccer is hosting. Twentyone teams from various districts will be attending the tournament July 8-10.

As for the Ponoka FC playing in the Battle River men’s league, they narrowly missed having to forfeit another game, the second this season, when they could muster seven players, enough to field a team for their away game in Stettler on Sunday, June 26. They played but lost with a score of 4-0. They take on Manluk at home on Sunday, July 3.

Mosquitos swatted by Bashaw in playoff match up

BY JORDIE DWYER PONOKA NEWS Sometimes the ball doesn’t fall where you want it.

For the Ponoka Mosquito baseball squad, that’s exactly what happened in their Tier II Central Alberta Baseball League playoff semi-final game at the Riverside dia-

monds on Monday, June 27 in a 17-11 loss to Bashaw.

Not only did Ponoka have to deal with missing a few players, they then had to contend with a couple of injuries during the game and not having their top pitcher available.

Still the team battled hard and managed to maintain a

4-4 tie into the fourth inning, but that’s when the wheels began to wobble - giving up a few runs in the fifth - before they completely fell off in the sixth.

Head coach Greg Hatniak explained his team saw the bleed, but just didn’t know what to do to stop it and Bashaw was just able to pile

on the runs in the top half of the inning.

Mosquitos will now play for third place against Drayton Valley, who lost Monday night to Rocky Mountain House. That game will go

tonight (Wednesday, June 29) at the Riverside diamonds with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m.

Both Ponoka PeeWee clubs were also in playoff action on Monday night. The Ponoka

Hard Hitters were in Rimbey for the Tier III semi-final while the Ponoka Jays were in Innisfail for the Tier VI semi-final. The results for both of those games were not available at press time.

Mildred E. Ziegler Mildred E. Ziegler (nee Hurst) passed away peacefully on June 16, 2016 at the age of 82 years, at the Wetaskiwin Hospital Palliative Care Unit.

She was born on September 18, 1933 in Darcy, Saskatchewan to Grace and Ranford Hurst. Mildred leaves to mourn, her sons Anton (Joanne), Marvin, Harvey, and Norman and daughter Sheila Anderson; stepdaughters Sharon (Steve) Telfer, Wendy (Earl) Peavoy, Judy (Norm) Soucy, and Linda (Jim) Rose; many grandchildren and greatgrandchildren; very special grand-daughter Dana, cousin Bonnie and daughter-in-law Shannon Wilkie; sisters-inlaw Carmel Button and Doris Hurst; as well as numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. She was predeceased by her parents, husband Robert (Bob) Ziegler, son Randy Anderson, sister Grace and Pat, and brothers Rod, Bill and David Hurst. The Interment Service took place at the Forest Home Cemetery at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, June 24, 2016 followed by a Celebration of Life at 2:00 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion, Ponoka.
